I hope that all of you will make a very concerted effort to attend. This reunion is most important as we will be discussing the future of the USCGC Duane Association. As you all should know, our crew list and participation at the reunions has fallen way below what is needed to hold a reunion. Last year I had to cancel the reunion in Wildwood, NJ due to a lack of rooms booked. I put a lot of time and effort into arraigning these reunions and to not have the crew take advantage is very disappointing. We over the years have enjoyed the comradery we share at each reunion. During the past two years we have not had a new person sign aboard. The dues are way below expectation and the ship’s store is barely holding its own. There- fore, a major decision will need to be made at this year’s business meeting as to what course you would like to take. The business meeting will be at 0830 Saturday September 8 either in the hospitality room or on the mess deck in the restaurant (tbd). I certainly hope that we have a good turnout as it might be our last. If you have any questions, please email them to me. Many of the other associations are having the same issues and are talking of disbanding. Doak Walker has set up a reunion for all Sea - Air- Land sailors to be held every other year, the information for his next reunion is in this edition of the Helm. I have been to one and it is great with lots of crews from all Coast Guard Units. John & Carol Hunt go most all the time. American Legion, VFW, and Amvets are having the same problem, they are not getting members under forty years of age. The Portland Maine Cutterman’s Association will also be discussing the same issues. If you are a member of that association you need to be aware of the outcome of their business meeting. Please do your best to attend September 7, 8, 9 at the Merry Manor in South Portland. On a brighter note, any of you who are golfers and would like to play a round I have made arraign- ments at Gorham CC September 7, 9, 10 or 11. Eighteen holes with cart $40.00pp, 9 holes with cart $25.00pp, 18 holes walking $24.00pp, 9 holes

AHOY ONE & ALL,

In this edition, you will find all the information you will need about this year’s reunion.

There-fore, a major decision will need to be made at this year’s business meeting as to what course you would like to take.

The business meeting will be at 0830 Saturday September 8 either in the hospitality room or on the mess deck in the restaurant (tbd). I certainly hope that we have a good turnout as it might be our last. If you have any questions, please email

them to me.
