We have had another fantastic year at Lawn Manor and we are very proud of everything that our pupils and staff have achieved. I’m sure you realise how busy the school is from our weekly updates and the opportunities that we give our pupils through curricular and extra-curricular activities! Next week sees our annual ‘enrichment week’ and we are all very much looking forward to that, we have an amazing array of activities going on, definitely something for everyone! May I just remind you that pupils are in non-school uniform and have a delayed starting time of 9.40am. We will share some of the highlights of our week in a picture special edition of the newsletter. In advance to this, I do hope that you have a fantastic summer when it comes and that the weather stays kind to us! What a day! Lawn Manor hosted their second sports day and it will be a difficult one to beat. The weather was kind, the facilities were spot on and the pupils smashed existing records. In a nutshell, it is a day when sporting activities dominate the timetable and all pupils get involved in one activity or another. In the morning, we run the traditional field events, the 800 metres race and the crowd favourite tug of war. If pupils are not involved in these, they will be participating in Ultimate Frisbee, Dodgeball, Handball and “fun” races with all given the opportunity to pick up house points. The afternoon sees the whole school on the field to watch the traditional track events, including the staff relay team competing against Year 10s. The grand finale is the finals of the tug of war in which the victorious Year 10 tutor team is challenged by a staff team. Throughout all, there is an event ceremony taking place in which, pupils are presented with gold, silver and bronze medals if they finish in the top 3 of their event. Phew!! I hope we are all in training for next year.

    Lawn Manor Sports News

On Monday we attended the Year 7 & Year 8 Swindon school’s athletics championships at the County Ground. We had a lovely day in the sunshine and all athletes did themselves proud gaining some new PB's. Special praise to Thiago Trevisan who won the High Jump clearing 1 metre 40 cm and to Mackenzie Downing on winning the Javelin event with a throw of nearly 20 metres.

On Tuesday we attended the Year 9 & Year 10 athletic championships. Both teams did really well and the highlights were Fran Cerda winning the 200 metres, Connor Gunning winning the 800m. Tye Stroud winning both the Year 9 100m and 200m events. The Year 9 boys relay team winning this event and the Year 10 relay team coming 2nd in their event. Well done to all.

At the start of the year, all three houses were set a challenge to read 25 million words by the end of the year. Years 7, 8 & 9 use the Accelerated Reader programme in every English lesson and a weekly library session in order to encourage them to make reading part of their daily lives and develop a love of reading which will stay with them for their whole lifetime. The amount of reading completed this year has been amazing and the word count total stands at over 91 million words and over 6,500 books. These figures are superb and show how much reading is enjoyed by our pupils. Fitzroy and Goddard successfully completed the 25 million word challenge. We also have 13 pupils who have entered the exclusive Millionaire Club by reading over 1,000,000 words this year. Congratulations to all these pupils.

The PTA team just wanted to say a very big thank you to all the parents who purchased a drink, cake or snack from our refreshments stall at the ‘We Will Rock You’ performances last week. You all helped us to raise an amazing £215 which has been banked for now but will be used to help support and enhance the school and pupils in the future. With your support we have raised almost £3000 since we set the PTA up over the past 18 months and plan to work out what we are going to spend it on at our next PTA meeting in September. If you want a say in where the money gets spent, come and join us everyone welcome. You can contact us on [email protected] if you would like to join a PTA meeting or if you think you could spare a couple of hours each term to volunteer? (it's friendly and informal and every other meeting is in the pub!) As we near the end of the school year it is a good time to remind you that we are collecting outgrown or no longer required Lawn Manor blazers, and branded PE kit along with skirts, trousers and ties in good condition. We hope to set up our own online shop of pre-worn items but need stock to enable this. If you have any unwanted items please send into school reception marked PTA. If you fancy co-ordinating this on behalf of the PTA please let us know. Thank you again for your support!

On Monday 15th July we were delighted to host a summer sing/sign along party (which also included White Christmas!) with our friends from the OK4U centre. Since September 2018, Lawn Manor Academy pupils have been visiting the centre for adults with learning needs weekly and taking part in singing/signing sessions. Our pupils have built up great relationships with the centre and have thoroughly enjoyed their experience working alongside these adults and we feel privileged that they have requested that we continue in the new academic year. Some of the pictures demonstrate how much everyone enjoyed themselves and how music is such great therapy. If there are any pupils that would like to visit the centre next term and take part in Singing/Signing sessions, then please see Becci Benson for more information.

  • EAL Day We organised a special event to celebrate the diversity here at Lawn Manor Academy. The event held on 15th July created opportunities for Lawn Manor pupils to learn about the values of other religions, listen to music from different cultures and learn about different languages. Pupils spent the day getting involved in various activities such as learning how to drape Saree, Polish baking, Indian cuisine and fruit carving.

On the second day of the celebration, we invited Year 4 pupils from local primary schools. This has provided our pupils with the skills, knowledge and opportunities to learn with, from and about those from different cultures, beliefs and backgrounds in order to develop shared values. Local community leaders were invited to the event and Canon John Cunningham from Holy Rood Church, Dr Sheikh Rafi Ahmed, the Muslim community leader and scientist, Ram Thiagarajah the school coordinator of the Swindon Hindu Temple Trust and Arindom Roy Choudhury from SHAROD attended and gave talks to the pupils about faith, beliefs and religions.

We were extremely delighted with how the day went and thanked all the staff, the visitors and specially the pupil volunteers for making the event such a positive and enjoyable experience for all. Mr Das

    DofE Bronze Expedition 2019

DofE Bronze Expedition 2019 Congratulations to this year’s group of DofE pupils who recently passed their expedition section of the DofE award. The pupils walked a tough 11.2 miles on Saturday afternoon in the hot sun with heavy backpacks full of camping gear. Once they arrived at camp, tents were set up and gas stoves were lit as they cooked up some well-earned food. A cold night of camping was then followed up by some cooked breakfast and cereal bars to take on board the required energy for the walk back home. An extraordinary effort and congratulations to all of the following pupils: Emily Umney Lynn Monteiro Zahra Bakhshyar Alexandra Bamford Jane Banuve Rebecca Mason Annie Randall John Wetton Melanie Azevedo Beate Eversome Ryan Andrews Brandon Ball Tye Stroud Oliver Harding Richard Hewitson Shauna King

    PD Day

Wednesday saw our last Personal Development Day of the academic year. Year 7 and 8 enjoyed a day with an International theme, that included a session of Danish Longball. Year 9 spent the day with a company called 'Revolution Hive', who ran workshops on Growth Mindset, Financial Wellbeing and Ethical Consumerism, which went down really well with the pupils. Meanwhile, Year 10's, covered a range of topics, including a fascinating talk from Major General Peter Williams, who spoke about his time as a spy during the Cold War.
