1 Annual Report to Parents 2014-2015 Written Autumn Term 2015 Another exciting successful year! Dear Parent Welcome to this years GovernorsReport on the activities and progress of the Ceiriog Valley Federation of Schools. Within the following pages you will find detailed notes on the achievements and aspirations of the children and staff of the Federation and its component schools in Llanarmon, Glyn Ceiriog and Pontfadog. The Federation of the schools is still a relatively new development but its success has drawn praise from the Local Education Authority and Estyn, the schools inspection body. They recognise the enhanced opportuni- ties, academic, sporting, cultural and social, that it offers to the children of the valley, and to the staff who are able to develop and share best practice more readily. Last years improvements to the schools are beginning to bear fruit; the solar panels are not just efficient, they are providing an income and at Cynddelw the children have more breathing space, there is a well ap- pointed staff room replacing a broom cupboard and the Head and her Secretary have proper offices. In his notes last year, Howard Davies, the then Chair of Governors, wrote about the need for succession planning for the governing body. He felt that it was the right time for him to step down as the Federation was established and as it entered a new phase of consolidation. The past few years have been challenging ones for schools everywhere facing constant curriculum changes, tightened budgets, demanding inspections and even the threat of closures, particularly in rural areas. A huge debt is owed to Howard by everyone in the valley interested in educational provision here. He served as a governor for some ten years and it was his drive, acumen, tenacity and strategy that led to the the successful outcome of the negotiations that culminated in the creation of the Federation. He led the governing body with charm, wit and integrity and invested a huge amount of his time from an already busy family and professional life. Government demands and expects more and more from governing bodies and since the last report we have been fortunate to enlarge the board by recruiting new members. We shall all continue to pursue our respon- sibilities of supporting the schools, raising expectations, asking the challenging questions where necessary and ensuring that each and every child is given the opportunity to develop his/her potential to the maximum in an increasingly competitive and changing world. Thank you to all of the children, the staff, (and congratulations to Lora!) the parents and the governors for all of the hard work accomplished and for that to come. Lets look forward to another successful year. The school year 2014-2015 has been a very a busy one! The children have been involved in a wide range of activities inside and outside the classroom. We have had another busy and enjoyable year in the Foundation phase classes this year. Thank you for all your support throughout the year. In the autumn term we studied the topic of ‘Wales long ago’. We learnt about life in castles and read stories about the Age of the Princes. We had a fantastic re-enactment day with Cwmwd Ial, when we cooked on a fire, weaved cloth, chopped wood, looked at medicines, weaponry and old toys. We went into battle in the afternoon with our swords and shields and defeated Mrs Corben. It was great fun and was the highlight of the term for many of the children. The building work started in the second half term which made life a little tricky but the children soon adapted. We used the community centre for our PE lessons as well as using it for our Christmas fair and school play. In the same term, we went to the cinema to watch ‘How to train your Dragon 2’ which the children themselves chose. The spring term was quite a busy one with World Book day, Red Nose day and Fairtrade fortnight. We invited all the parents to tea to celebrate Fair trade. The children enjoyed having you in class with them. It was a very successful after-noon with many parents able to join us. Our topic for the spring term was ‘Celebrations around the World’. We started the term by learning about Chinese New Year. The children especially enjoyed tasting food and drink purchased from a Chinese supermarket. We then learnt about various celebrations that take place in Wales and finished the term with a Hindu festival called Holi. During this time we also had ‘Zoo Lab’ into school. The children got to see, handle and discover information about some of their animals - we met an African land snail, a tarantula, stick insects and many more. Finally, in the summer term we learnt all about ‘Pirates and water’. We were lucky to have a guest speaker, Dr Martyn Ap Martyn (a Marine Biologist) visit the school; the children asked him many questions that they’d prepared. He was very knowledgeable and helped the children with their understanding. The Wrexham Orchestra came in to perform and show-case their talents. Children learnt all about the different instrument families and what they are capable of. The children were so inspired that they enthusiastically (and noisily) reproduced what they had seen and heard in our music corner in class! We also went to the Jambori in Wrexham and joined in with lots of schools singing in Welsh. Toward the end of term, we are also looking forward to our whole school trip to ‘Gulliver’s World’ where the children can enjoy their re-ward for all the hard work and effort they have put in this year. Da iawn pawb! Thanks to all of you for your help, support and good humour.

This year has yet again been a very busy year for the pupils. Topics this year have been Ancient Greece, Glyn Ceiriog and Bebington and the Tu-dors. Marc Griffiths came out to both educate and entertain the pupils with the Cen-tenary of the Great War. We have raised some funds for Hope House. Edward from the Leonard Cheshire Home came to show the pupils how to create Encaustic Art work. We visited the cinema in Wrexham to view footage of the BBC’s 10 piece musi-cal orchestra. Clare from Activate came in to produce a short Greek theatrical play with the Federation pupils. The Autumnal Fayre helped raise money for our much needed school PTA. We also attended the Rimbojam in Ysgol Bro Alyn which meant we sang lots of songs with the Urdd. The Christmas Fayre was well attended and again helped add to our PTA funds! The junior pupils performed well in our Christmas Play. Our annual Christingle service went well, helped by the fact the juniors (under Mrs Payne’s guidance) made over 100 Christingle oranges in preparation. The children enjoyed their Christmas party and disco at the Canolfan, as well as a trip to the cinema. Some year 5 and 6 pupils undertook Bikeability training with great success. The NSPCC came in to give a workshop to years 5/6. The school councillors met the Mayor and had a tour of the Mayor’s Parlour. Many parents and relatives came into the school to see what the children had been learning during Fairtrade Fortnight. We have also visited the Liverpool Museum to look at their Space floor and visited their planetarium. The pupils entered the Federation maths tournament. Many children competed in Urdd items with good success and supported the Powys Eisteddfod held in the valley. The children have dressed up as their heroes, dressed funny for money, in Welsh col-ours, dressed as a book character, all in aid of varying causes. Year 5/6 were given the opportunity to visit Cardiff. We have visited the Church and the Institute to study stained glass windows. Many thanks to Mrs Jean Payne and Mrs Einwen Jones. Wrexham Music Service has per-formed to the pupils also and also helped to create a wonderful composition with key stage 2. A great sports day was held in Ysgol Cynddelw with all pupils from the Federation tak-ing part. Events in the morning included wellington throwing, discus, javelin and skip-ping endurance! Glyndwr were the overall champions! Pupils in year 6 had a very successful transition week in Ysgol Dinas Bran learning about the Magna Carta. An emotional leavers service was held as we wished our year 6’s all the best in their secondary schools.

Key Stage 2

The after school clubs running this year were numerous including football, netball ,cookery , cricket, rounders, infant games, eco club, bowls, chess, tennis and dance. Adran Dyffryn Ceiriog was set up this year which saw 30-40 pupils join the Urdd and attend Urdd club on Fridays in Cynddelw. Drama club and French club (based at Cynddelw) has run throughout the year.

Following the two Estyn inspections in 2014-2015 the schools have used the recommen-dations to improve practice across the federation. In both Ysgol Llanarmon and Ysgol Pontfadog the inclusive, caring, supportive atmos-phere was praised and that both schools celebrate diversity and appreciate all learners. Both reports also praised the work of the Dyffryn Ceiriog Federation –Ysgol Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, Ysgol Cynddelw and Ysgol Pontfadog:-

The regular opportunities that are available for pupils to take part in community activities and to work jointly with pupils at other schools in the Federation, have a positive effect on the development of their social skills.

Productive co-operation with other schools in the Dyffryn Ceiriog Schools Federa-tion has a very positive effect on pupils’ standards and the quality of provision.

The practice of planning jointly and sharing teachers’ expertise has contributed sig-nificantly towards strengthening the quality of teaching and ensured better con-sistency and accuracy in teachers’ assessments.

The close networking and co-operation that exists within the Dyffryn Ceiriog Prima-ry Schools Federation enables staff to develop and share their professional knowledge effectively.

Ysgol Llanarmon report was “Good” which in Estyn definition means “many strengths and no important areas requiring significant improvement.” Ysgol Pontfadog’s report was “Adequate” which in Estyn definition means “Strengths outweigh areas for improvement .” Both reports included recommendations for future developments which have been adopted into the school Development Plan. Recommendations include

Improve pupils’ phonic awareness and raise standards in reading Improve standards of pupils’ writing, including their spelling, punctuation and hand-

writing, and ensure that pupils have enough opportunities to develop their extend-ed writing skills across the curriculum

Raise standards in ICT Improve levels of attendance Raise standards of teaching and, in particular, ensure that teachers expect pupils’

work to be of high quality and that this is reflected in their marking Ensure that leaders and managers are more rigorous in their monitoring of stand-

ards of pupils’ work, and provide clear, specific guidance and greater challenge to staff in order to raise standards

Provide more challenging literacy tasks for more able pupils in the Foundation Phase

Ensure a more active role for the governing body in the self-evaluation process The schools have all been working hard to act upon the recommendations by Estyn. Significant progress has already been made. Any school judged as adequate will be re-visited by Estyn the following year.

Priorities for 2015-2017

Impact of Pupil Deprivation Grant 2014-2015 The Pupil Deprivation Grant (PDG) is allocated to schools with pupils who come from low-

income families and are currently known to be eligible for free school meals (e-FSM) and

pupils who have been looked after continuously for more than six months (LAC).

Schools are expected to make the best use of this funding to implement sustainable strate-

gies that will quickly bring about changes for learners eligible for free school meals or who

are LAC.

As a school we have agreed the following three steps:

•to identify the target group of pupils, its characteristics and needs

•to plan interventions which make the most effective use of resources

•to monitor and evaluate the impact of resources

In 2014-15 Ysgol Cynddelw was provided with a PDG allocation of £7,344.

There was no allocation for Ysgol Pontfadog or Ysgol Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog

Forest

School

Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 have experienced forest schools in Nantyr with the pupils from the federation schools. This has given opportunities for the pupils to so-cialise with pupils from the other schools, make friends and also prepare them for secondary schools. Here are some pictures of each group. Thanks to Miss Hannah Parkinson for organising this for the pupils. Many thanks also to all the

parents and helpers who have made this activity possible. Activities included

naughts and crosses with woodland items, making wood cookies, making mal-lets, cooking food around the fire, toasting marshmallow, making animal homes.

Sports The children have had many chances to take part in sporting tournaments during the year. The schools in the federation joined to make teams as well as having physical education in year/ability groups on Thursday afternoons. The children have competed in cross country, hockey, football, netball, dance, cricket, tag rugby, tennis and athletics. We have also had some amazing results. We took three teams to the Ysgol Dinas Bran netball tournament and finished first and second! The netball team also were runners up the Ysgol Mor-gan Llwyd tournament! Well done! The football team also did very well and came second in the in the small schools 6 a side football tournament in Ysgol Dinas Bran. Two kwik cricket teams did very well in the tournament. Two teams also enjoyed the tag rugby tournaments and did well. The swimming gala teams also did very well even though many pupils were on a residential trip in Cardiff. Nearly all of key stage 2 played in the tennis tournament at the Wrexham Tennis Centre. All pu-pils were a credit to the schools. The Urdd dance team qualified to the county and performed brilliantly. Pupils have also chosen sports after school clubs.

on time to complete phase 5 for November 2015,

Ysgol Cynddelw have maintained their National Quality Award for Healthy schools which they

received in 2012. The second reassessment states that ”Ysgol Cynddelw is worthy of the

health promoting school award. Health promotion is evident across all aspects of the school

and behaviours are embedded into the life of the school.”

We celebrated Anti-bullying week with a variety of activities throughout the school. Staff at-

tended PCP training and fed back to all staff to instil a pupil centred approach. We continued

Attendance at each school has improved in 2014-2015. Attendance was a recommendation in the Ysgol

Pontfadog’s Estyn inspection report March 2015 . As you can see it has improved. Ysgol Llanarmon’s at-

tendance has fallen last year. In Ysgol Cynddelw and Ysgol Pontfadog is above our target of 96% and is

very close in Ysgol Llanarmon D C.

Absences have an adverse effect on our overall percentages.

We have a whole school computerised system to monitor pupils’ attendance and punctuality. The attend-

ance does fluctuate from year to year. We do recommend that parents do not take holiday during term time

because it can have a detrimental effect on a child’s education when important lessons are missed. The

Welsh Assembly Government points out that holidays in term time are not a right and should be agreed by

the Head teacher:

“Absences authorised under this discretion should be kept to a minimum. Ten school days should not be

regarded as the norm. If a school does not agree absence and the pupil goes on holiday, the absence is

unauthorised.” Welsh Assembly Government Please ensure that you contact the school to give a reason for your child being absent.

Equality

Ysgol Pontfadog, Ysgol Cynddelw and Ysgol Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog believe that diversity is

a strength, which should be respected and celebrated by all those who learn, teach and visit

here.

We are committed to ensuring equality of education and opportunity for disabled pupils, staff

and all those receiving services from the school. We recognise and welcome the proactive

nature of the duty to promote disability equality and aim to develop a culture of inclusion and

diversity in which people feel free to disclose their disability and to participate fully in school

life. We will make reasonable adjustments to ensure that the school environment is as acces-

sible as possible.

We recognise our duty and responsibility to establish for all learners, staff, other members of

the school community and service users regardless of their race, gender, disability, gender

reassignment, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, religion or belief, marriage and civil

partnership as defined within the Equality Act 2010.

Additional Needs

At the Ceiriog Valley Federation the staff and governors endeavour to provide a broad, balanced and rele-

vant curriculum for all pupils. Those with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) have tailor made provision. Pupils

identified as MAT More able and Talented are given individual targets and challenged further. We recognise

the entitlement of all pupils to equal opportunities, both socially and academically. All achievements of pu-

pils are celebrated, be they in or out of the classroom, and the school recognises the worth of every child

in its care.

Children are integrated with their peer groups whenever possible. Staff provide extra support, or a differ-

entiated curriculum for children with ALN.

During the year the school worked closely with advisory staff from the LA to best meet the needs of chil-

dren on our ALN register.

For 2014/ 2015 our ALN register was as follows:-

Comparative data/Results 2015

At the end of the Foundation Phase pupils the average pupil should be working at Out-

come 5. Teacher assessment will only be completed in 1 language of parental choice at

the end of Foundation Phase. At the end of key stage 2 Year 6 pupils should be working

at level 4. Teacher assessment is completed in Welsh and English at the end of key stage

2. Of course all pupils are different and some do not reach this expected outcome or level

and some pupils achieve higher than this. At Ffederasiwn Dyffryn Ceiriog we endeavour

for every child to reach his or her full potential. The small numbers in year group have a

huge impact on the percentages.

There has been no meeting in the last 12 months. Parents of registered pupils at the school can request up to three meetings per year with the governing body via a petition. 1. the petition contains the signatures of the required minimum number of parents of reg-istered pupils at the school, which is the lower of the following: (a) the parents of 10% of registered pupils, or

(b) the parents of 30 registered pupils. Should you require clarification please conact Mr Keith Benning 01691 600214

A final word

We have really enjoyed our third year as part of the Ceiriog Valley Federa-tion. We have seen a number of positive changes and enjoyed being part of a big team with delegated responsibilities. In the meantime governors and staff are looking forward to the challenges ahead. We have improved each school site. Ysgol Llanarmon have at last got an outdoor learning area and a door from the Foundation phase class-room to this area is easily accessibly for pupils and staff. Ysgol Cynddelw have a new building. Ysgol Pontfadog has had the kitchen and hall update. The solar panels are starting to create revenue for the schools. As you can see we have had a very busy year and we look forward to the challenges 2015-2016 will bring. We are always looking for volunteers at the schools to help develop read-ing, or do some gardening, if you do have any expertise or free time to of-fer please contact us.

Many thanks for your support during 2014-2015
