ThebiggesteventformanywasMrsSimpson’sretirementafterelevenyearsservicetotheschoolasHead teacher. She finishedon a highwith the school’s results for year six being the highestrecorded, and the school’s categorisation level recognising the high achievements of staff andpupils.Wewishheralltheverybestforalongandhappyretirement.
The other major event of the school year is much more physically obvious as it’s the building work to provide a new nursery unit that the school has worked towards for many years. In that I must thank the Wenvoe Playgroup for their participation in the process of making it become a reality.
As many of you will have seen, the building work for the nursery, and other associated works, went on well into the new school year. This was not the school’s original schedule but was outside our control. The new nursery will form the cornerstone of a modern Early Years unit that any school would be proud of.
I must now mark the departure of four long-serving governors; Nick Cooke left at the start of the school year after serving for many years as a Foundation (Church) governor and worked as Vice-Chair over his last few years. He was replaced by Vicky Roylance in September 2015. Sandra North started as a parent governor, leaving at the end of her eligibility before returning as an LEA governor for another few years. Mike Bassett and Trudy Kennedy are both finishing as parent governors over a number of years, Mike deciding not to continue and Trudy being ineligible for that type of governor. I can only thank them all for their contributions over the years.
Gwenfô is a successful school for many reasons, but the partnership with parents is one of the main elements. This partnership takes many forms; assisting your child with their school work, especially homework and reading, providing feedback to the school on your child both at home and in school, keeping your child and others safe by sensible parking and careful driving around the school, and supporting the Parents, Teachers, and Friends Association that does so much for the school.
The governors and staff care for the school and its pupils and work to create a safe learning environment for the children through the Christian values we all hold dear. As this report is going to be reaching you nearer to Christmas than usual, I would like to wish all parents and guardians, children and staff, a very Happy Christmas.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
We reflect back on the achievements of last year with great pride.
We had an extremely successful 2015/16 with excellent results in both key stages as a result of a clear focus on teaching and learning. All staff, both in Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2, continue to focus on pupils’ development of skills of Literacy, Numeracy and thinking skills within an exciting and stimulating curriculum. The children took part in many exciting educational visits and as always we were complemented on the behaviour of our polite, caring and enthusiastic children.
2015/16 was a year of changes we said goodbye to Mrs. Simpson as our Headteacher after a very successful ten years at the school. Work has begun to add a new Early Years unit to include a Nursery. We are thrilled with the plans so far and pupils have enjoyed watching the build develop. We welcomed Miss Kerry Williams into a permanent classteacher role in the Foundation Phase and held interviews for LSAs and a teacher for our new Nursery unit. We are pleased to announce Ms. Mari Shalom will be joining us as our nursery teacher and Mrs. Saran Bryan and Mrs. Sarah Morris will be joining the LSA team. Vicar Jon continues to be a regular visitor leading our weekly worship, following his appointment at St. Mary’s Wenvoe.
As mentioned our big build is well underway and we hope to be open by September for pupils. We are excited to have new staff, pupils and families join our successful and thriving school. We look forward to another successful year as we continue to work in partnership with parents to further improve standards.
Yours sincerely
Miss Starke
