Amber McKinney is no stranger to volunteering. Among her many positions she has been

a Command Ombudsman, Ombudsman Trainer, Girl Scout Leader, Baseball Volunteer and of

course an active volunteer in her children’s school. She was the Center Director for the USO of

Hampton Roads. How does someone this busy, pursue her college degree? According to Amber,

very carefully with a busy schedule like hers.

Amber first won a WOASF Spouse Scholarship in 2008 while stationed in Sigonella, Italy.

She was taking classes on-line at University of Maryland, University College. Once back in the

states, she continued her studies at Norfolk State University and she continued to win the scholar-

ship 4 more times. “The great thing about WOASF is that they allow you flexibility in your educa-

tion. I am going to school part-time to accommodate my family and our moves and WOASF sup-

ports that. WOASF understands the challenges of being a military dependent and trying to complete

your education. For spouses, deployments and moving often hamper our ability to go school

full-time and it is great to have the support of an organization who doesn’t limit our awards.”

Now Amber is living in Jacksonville, FL and taking the semester off, but she’ll be

back at it again in the Spring. She has also added another volunteer role to her resume,

WOASF Key Volunteer in Jacksonville. Amber has already helped support the golf tourna-

ment, and will be our representative at college fairs, FRG meetings and high school awards

ceremonies. “It is the least I can do for an organization that has given me so much. Without

nancial support for me, but knowing they believe in me, makes me believe in myself.”

Being awarded the Centennial Scholarship has helped ease the burden of financial responsibility during my

college career. I am able to put a lot more effort into my schoolwork, classes, and other involvements on

campus, instead of worrying about how I am going to pay tuition. I cannot thank the Wings Over America

Scholarship Foundation enough for the continued support and encouragement. WOASF has contributed

largely to making my college experience, as well as my future endeavors, an amazing experience.

The 2014 Wings Over America Scholarship has provided me with peace of mind while I pursue my academic and civic interests during my final year of college. My continuing goals in my studies, pro-

fessional development and personal life are to help people. I want to make sure that scholarship does

not just help me, but allows me to amplify it by helping others. Christopher Pappas, Senior, The Col-

lege of William and Mary, four time WOASF recipient.

It has been a great year for WOASF! We have given out more scholarships for more money than ever before. None of that would have been possible without your fi-nancial support. Your generosity and participation in our events enabled us to award over $130,000 in schol-arships to 50 students this year.

One of our goals the past two years has been to increase individual giving, as studies that 80% of charitable giv-ing comes from individual donors. You can see from the chart below we are gaining ground (corporate donations used to outpace individuals 2:1). But obviously we are a long way from 80%. If you’re currently a donor, thank you. Please help us, by spreading the word about WOASF, and the awesome service we provide to our de-pendents. If you are not currently a donor, please con-sider giving. A little or a lot, every penny counts when assisting students with the high cost of college.

We hope you will continue your commitment to WOASF and the scholarships we provide. This year we will add another $10,000 in scholarships to our awards bringing the total amount to $140,000 this spring. This will bring us to our Million Dollar Milestone, awarding more than $1,000,000 since the organization started in 1987. Every dollar you give, makes a tremendous difference to our scholars.

Thank You!

I am extremely grateful to Wings Over America for supporting my education over the past four years. These scholarships have been a tremendous help and have played a huge role in allowing me to pursue my goals. As I enter into my senior year of college I realize how blessed I am to have had the support of so many people, Wings Over America included. I ab-solutely love studying Criminal Justice and I still plan on going into law enforcement after graduation. I’m extremely excited to apply my studies after I graduate and go out and make a difference in the world. Your continued support has allowed me to receive an extraordinary education the past three years and I look forward to getting the most out of my senior year! - Morgan Karney, Senior, Gonzaga University, four time WOASF recipient.

Volunteer of the Year—Diane Brennan

WOASF is lucky to have many wonderful volunteers. We have a dedicated scholarship commit-

tee comprised of 15 volunteers, a great auction committee that spreads the word about the event and coor-

dinates the baskets, an army of volunteers to help run our four golf tournaments throughout the country and

many more that pitch in here and there to help with our mission. This year we added a new event, the Col-

lege Concert Series to our event calendar and with nothing more than a good idea, we set upon to make it

happen. While all of the committee played a big part in its execution, Diane Brennan was our best asset

and for that, she is our “Volunteer of the Year”.

The idea for the Hullabahoo concert came from Steve Brennan, one of our Board members and

Di’s husband Their son, Sam was not only president of the all male a cappella group, from UVA, but also

a recipient of several WOASF scholarships. Steve proposed the concert idea and Sam quickly agreed and

thought this would be a great way to support the scholarship foundation who had supported him throughout

his college career. Then it was Diane’s turn to help. Diane did everything; sold tickets, spread the word and brought on a pro bono

marketing coordinator. She went above and beyond in not only housing the 18 member group, but also feeding them three meals a

day while they were in town. You can imagine how many trips to Sam’s Club it takes to satisfy 18 hungry, young men. Her ef-

forts were amazing and greatly benefited WOASF.

Di has been a long time volunteer for WOASF, as a scholarship reader, an auction volunteer, the food coordinator for our

Virginia Beach Golf Tournament, she really has done it all. She is also a pivotal member of the Tidewater Collection, executing he

role of buyer, and stager for the shop’s beautiful merchandise. Diane is a long time Navy spouse and has been a mentor to many

spouses along the way. Without hard-charging spouses like Diane, many groups that support Navy families couldn’t carry out their

missions. So Diane Brennan, thank you for all you do for WOASF!

Words cannot express my gratitude in receiving a 2014 Wings Over America Scholarship award. I

will be completing my undergraduate coursework at Old Dominion University and will graduate in

May 2015 with a dual degree in Marine Biology and Applied Mathematics. With the expiration of

several school awarded scholarships following the 2013-2014 school-year, this award was a godsend,

and as such, completely unexpected. The receipt of this award will allow me to put aside a greater

share of my salary from my part-time employment towards the future cost of graduate school. I will

forever be grateful and indebted to Wings Over America for its support to me and other military fam-

ily members pursuing higher education. Sydney Catoire, Senior, Old Dominion University, four

time WOASF Recipient

WOASF Virginia Beach Golf Tournament

It was a perfect day for the WOASF Virginia Beach Golf Tourna-

ment held aboard NAS Oceana’s Aeropines Golf Course. The full

field of 144 golfers enjoyed a great day for golf, and WOASF had

another successful fundraising event. Sponsors included Newport

News Shipbuilding, Pratt & Whitney, BAE Systems, Lockheed Mar-

tin, UBS, First Command, Navy Auto Source, GEICO, Boeing,

Homes for Heroes, Fairlead, Bruegger’s Bagels & Northrop Grum-

man. In addition to scores of door prize winners, team and individual

winners included:

1st Place: Team Solomon

Middle of the Pack: Team Hitchcock

Dead Ass Last: Team Wilson

Longest Drive (men’s) – Phillip Brennan

Longest Drive (ladies’) – Carol Driscoll

Closest to the Pin – Mark DeSalvo

Our fabulous volunteers included: Peg Shoemaker, Roberta Roth,

Steve Laukaitis, Amber Mc Kinney, Jean FitzPatrick, Matchje Lan-

zilotta, Joy Moynihan, Stephanie Bahr, Sarah Clark, Toni Gendron,

Jayme Borah, Tricia Groothousen, John Griffing and Ron Hoppock

Please join us for our tournament next year!

WOASF Jacksonville Golf Tournament The start of our golf outing couldn’t have been better, a

warm breeze, slightly overcast, a perfect day for golf in

Florida. Then the rain came, a typical event in Florida.

However it didn’t dampen the spirits of our golfers. They

still had a great time. As they say, “Any day on the golf

course beats a day in the office”. Thank you to Ken Nel-

son and Pratt & Whitney for your support. Team and in-

dividual winners included:

1st Place: Team Albright

2nd Place: Team Duncan

3rd Place : Team Brammer

Longest Drive – Tyler Kendall

Closest to the Pin – Tim Barnikle

Thank you to Joe Carreiro and John Bushick for your help

with the tournament. Looking forward to next year!

As fiscal year 2014 comes to a close, we are energized by the positive trajectory of our organization. Poised

to reach the one million dollar milestone in scholarships awarded, WOASF continues to be the premiere Navy Avia-

tion Scholarship Foundation. We are “Investing in the Best” and remain committed to assisting Navy dependents

reach their educational goals. In response to the rising cost of education, we increased our one year scholarships to

$2500 and added five $10,000 renewable scholarships which can be game changers when it comes to college selec-

tion. Another initiative for this year is scholarship money available for TRADE or TECHNICAL schools. We real-

ize that a traditional four year college is not the only avenue to success. We look forward to pioneering the trade

school effort and believe we will continue to expand in this area.

More change transpired this spring when our Chairman of the Board, VADM Mike Malone, USN (Ret.)

passed the gavel to RADM Bud Jewett, USN (Ret.). Serving on the board for six years, Admiral Malone was a

steadfast, ardent supporter of Wings. His engaged leadership style and passion for our mission provided the struc-

ture and guidance that propelled us to the success we enjoy today. Thank you Mike for all you have done! Bud,

thank you for your continued commitment and for readily taking the reins!

This year will bring another Hullabahoo Concert and Squadron Basket Auction, in addition to our ever

popular golf tournaments. Thank you to our corporate donors, squadrons and individuals who continue to support

our mission!

Finally, heartfelt congratulations go out to all of our Scholarship recipients! We applaud your hard work,

flexibility, dedication and resilience! At WOASF, we are proud to serve our Navy Aviation dependents, “Investing

in the Best” is our specialty.

All the Best,

Peg
