School takes learning outdoorsA frigid lake swim for

the willing, skiing, skating, and sharing a hostel with backpackers were special times at Carew Peel Forest School’s recent Tekapo senior camp. The school’s calendar regularly schedules camps; crystallizations of its take on teaching and learning. Principal Kay Ward says, “We believe learning sticks when you give children meaningful learning experiences, whether it be indoors or outdoors.”

So, while plenty of skills were exercised at camp – mind over matter in Lake Tekapo’s chill, parallel turns, sharing the hostel’s kitchen, etcetera – they’re plugged in to broader goals.

“ W i t h t h i s k i n d o f p r o g r a m m e , l e a r n i n g about important concepts such as connectedness, i n t e r d e p e n d e n c e a n d sustainability happens in a natural way as students are immersed in it. We believe that as they move through life, they’re more likely to think critically and treasure and protect different environments,” Kay says.

Children work on risk management for all their trips, including camps. Angus (11) says, “We went over things we should and shouldn’t do, and we thought we should be cautious about the other skiers and considerate with the public.

“When we leave school, we’ll be the public - they’re [management] skills for life, not just on the ski field; they’re for everywhere, everything else we do.” And of course, “Camp was fun.”

enviroschools facilitator hilary Iles says, “Schools like Carew Peel Forest are committed to taking their children outside. The children gain self-confidence, they start to look at the connections between things more – and care.

“In a classroom, there’s no weather, it’s uniform. you can do almost any subject you like outside and it’s authentic. Outside, you have to use more senses... and you use your body differently, if you’re, say, walking on uneven ground in a forest or a river bed.”

Room 1 Piwakawaka teacher Pip Long says, “Often children take their parents back to places we’ve been; often

these are things that don’t cost money. It links the family and the school.” Senior room teacher Mike Boon adds, “Camp’s a great way to get to know the children and parents outside of the school setting.”

Those things are important to the kaitiaki role the children share with DOC at Peel Forest’s Kahikatea Walk, as well as the green-gold award their enviroschool is working towards; social sustainability’s part in general sustainability. enviroschools’ aim is “To foster a generation of people who instinctively think and act sustainably.”

eleven-year-old Mattie, like Angus, is in the school’s envirogroup, driving the programme. he also loved camp, especially skiing, which left him “tired and happy”, and Roundhill’s “awesome landscape”.

he understands that what they do helps learning. “It’s good for us – so when we grow up we know how.” he explains about a coming whole-school project to develop the adjacent former schoolhouse site. “The envirogroup is going to clean up the rubbish and have animals, and fruit trees for people to eat fruit at school.”

correctionIn last week’s article, “Influenza B” it suggested that

tamiflu is free. It should have stated that “the free influenza vaccine is still available for all ages”.

Geraldine high School students have once again shown that rural school teams are a force to be reckoned with, with a list of successes in the finals of the winter sports calendar. Winners of their respective grades were; the under-16 boys rugby, Junior A boys basketball, Senior A girls basketball, Senior A girls netball, Senior B girls netball and the year 9A girls netball. Also punching above their weight were the year 8A and year 7A girls netball that both finished second in their grades. The school also boasts 48 students in representative teams so far this year.

GhS principal Simon Coleman says these teams epitomise the qualities that the school values.

“I want to mention three sports teams in particular: u16 Geraldine Rugby Club team which includes many of the players who attend our school, Junior 8A Netball and Senior A Netball team.

T h e s e t h r e e t e a m s encompass all of our school values. Their relationships with their fellow players and coach/managers, their respect for each other, opposing teams and demonstrating good sportsmanship, their responsibility in coming to every practice, being a responsible team member in representing their school or club, and their achievements in getting to the finals of their competition through passion, hard work and effort.”

hamish Sloper has just returned from Scotland, where he played with The St Andrew’s College Pipe Band at the Glasgow 2015 World Pipe Band Championships. The band was awarded fifth place out of the 42 bands that competed in the Juvenile section of the competition.

hamish began learning the pipes with Peter Ireland from Ashburton, and now learns from Richard hawke.

The choir will be wearing its new uniforms, which have been made by Methven seamstress Melinda Lattimore.

Tickets will be $15, available from a Mid Canterbury Choir member or at the door, St Andrew’s Church, havelock Street, Ashburton.

“Mainly Mountains” exhibition at Mt Hutt arts centre

Geraldine artist henry Lowen-Smith is set to open a new exhibition of his works at Mount hutt Arts Centre, Methven. The opening is this Friday, 4 September, from 5-7pm. The exhibition features 37 of the artist’s works which reflect the realism and colour tone of his style. With scenes from many locations in both Canterbury and further afield, henry’s richly depicted landscapes tell the story of a rugged country and its people. Working mainly in oils, the artist’s colour palette makes a bold statement of the prevailing atmospheric and lighting conditions to celebrate the grandeur and, at times, haunting nature of his subjects.

henry Lowen-Smith has been painting for 50 years, exhibiting widely in New Zealand and overseas. As a result, works produced by henry have found their way into corporate and private collections in over 20 countries. his art has won recognition in the form of two Kellehir Awards, first prize at Auckland easter Show exhibition, along with various other prizes, merits and significant commissions.

henry sells mainly from his home studio/gallery and so this represents a rare opportunity to view a large body of his work.

RDA is enjoying getting to know their newest member

R ide r s and s t a f f a t Geraldine Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) are enjoying getting to know their newest member, Cincinnati (nicknamed Natti), an 11-year-old mare.

Jenny hall, president of Geraldine RDA, says Natti has heaps of character and while she is lively when Jenny takes her out, like all RDA ponies Natti senses the difference when a disabled rider is aboard.

“She is a bit of a dag but very quiet. I can put anybody on her and know she is not going to step a foot out of place.”

Jenny says Natti is the perfect size for carrying a variety of riders. “She is very strong and virtually bomb proof; we can use her for any of our children.” She points out that RDA rules state their ponies cannot take anyone weighing over 85kg. “Natti is young and fit and is easily able to carry that.”

Officially, Natti is still on loan as the group does not yet have the necessary funds to complete her purchase and a further $1,500 is needed. however, recently the Winchester Masonic Lodge generously donated $2,000 to Geraldine RDA, which made a large dent in the purchase price.

Alan Davies, Worshipful Master of Winchester Masonic Lodge, is very pleased to be able to assist the RDA. “We know all [voluntary] groups are struggling but the RDA seemed a very worthwhile thing to donate to.” Stewart Stott, Winchester Masonic Lodge secretary, explains all masonic lodges are non-profit organisations and heavily involved in supporting charity and community services. “All the money we give away comes from our members’ efforts.” Winchester freemasons derive their main income from cutting and selling firewood, staffing the car park at the Timaru Farmers’ market and from their members’ subscriptions.

Jenny says, “We are very grateful to groups like the masons as without them we would not survive.”

except in winter, Geraldine RDA operates every Tuesday during school terms, running half hour sessions for small groups of riders. The riders start with some exercises to warm up and then play a game, all on horseback. Currently there are two instructors and 10 volunteers but Jenny says, “We desperately need more help.” She explains that two volunteers are needed per pony, one to lead the pony and one to walk beside the child reminding them what to do.

“you have to be fairly physically fit.” The riders presently come from Geraldine Primary School,

Geraldine high School and Woodbury School. In the past

children from Waihi School and Temuka schools have also attended. A referral by the school is required.

It is a constant battle to feed and care for the five horses and ponies. Geraldine RDA is continually looking for donations of hay, grazing and helpers to feed the ponies and keep their paddock clean. If you can help, contact Jenny on 693 8814.

Jenny adds, “I would like to say a big thank you to the service groups and businesses in Geraldine who support us, we are so grateful for their assistance.”
