From the Director's ChairGreetings Triumph Faithful!

What a difference a month makes! A month ago, it seemed that our wet cold winter was never going to end.Fast forward a few weeks and we’ve had a fantastic driveto the Peach State Aerodrome orchestrated by our veryown Art Hayes. What a beautiful day and a great drive. The restaurant was very nice and the planes and cars inthe museum were great. There were a few planes withdrip buckets under them to catch the oil – made me feel right at home. Art, thank you for your time and planning – it was a great event! The GTA gave Art a long sleeve T-shirt and a 6 pack cooleras small tokens of appreciation.

This past Saturday, (March 27th) I had a chance to take my 6 on a spirited drive through North Georgia, Northern Alabama and northwest Tennessee. I guess I put about 600 miles on the car last weekend and some of them were hard driven miles. I visited the Jack Daniels Distillery very briefly – just long enough for a quick photo, then to the George Dickel distillery and visitor’s center for about 15 minutes of souvenir shopping. I met some great people and saw lots of great cars along the way. I have had more fun in a car before, but those couple of times were long ago and had nothing to do with driving. Saturday was a fantastic day!

Then came Sunday, the ride home in a torrential downpour. My car had never been driven in the rain since I put her back together, so she had not been weather tested. Fortunately, Jeff Roundtree had shown me how he has kept his TR-250 rear window in such good shape by folding a towel in to protect it from the latch pins at the front of the top. Well, it turns out that the very same towel also does a very nice job of catching rain water if one stuffs it up on the dash at the base of the windshield. Thanks Jeff! Overall, the car did pretty well in the rain a day in the garage with the top down and she was bone dry.

So, follow last week with the arrival of my new VTO rims .The VTO’s look similar to the Panasport rims for almost half the cost. I had them mounted on the car today and took my first test drive. What an improvement in the ride! Just in time for the 25th Chris Core Mountain Tour this weekend. LIFE IS GOOD! I am looking forward to the mountain tour and to taking my nephew along for the ride – that is if he doesn’t cancel out on me. By the time you read this, Chris will have received a gift from all of us. The GTA will present Chris with a wooden treasure chest wine caddy complete with wine accessories and space for a bottle – which is currently occupied by a bottle of 23 year old Port. I wanted 25 year old port for obvious reasons, but could not find any – it turns out you have to special order it. So I’m hoping Chris’ math skills are not too good (he IS an art teacher) and that he will appreciate the gesture anyway. Speaking of his art skills, I am told that Chris designed the GTA logo. He has certainly left a mark on our lives, and I’ve not yet met the man. I’m looking forward to making a new friend and visiting with you all on Saturday. It is supposed to be absolutely beautiful. By the time you read this, it may have already happened. I hope you didn’t miss it!

Be sure to check your GTA web calendars for events and get out and DRIVE! Be careful out there. -Jim

The Ride to the Aerodromeby: Hans Von Nostren

Saturday March 20th was a beautiful day from start to finish - probably the best Saturday of 2010 to date for a top down drive through the countryside. 11 Triumphs assembled for the drive at the Olive Garden Restaurant off of I-20 west exit "75. We had a least one Spit, a TR-250, a few TR 6's, a Herald with a Vitesse looking bonnet, a TR7, TR-3 and at least one other non brit car. It was great to see the Triumph faithful assembled for a drive - it was just good to visit and see each others cars again and talk shop about what was done to our cars over the winter hibernation.

True to form, Art had a great drive planned with an easy to follow map and with points of interest marked along the way. We meandered through old southern towns - one wayward TR6 ventured into Barnesville - a little detour from the route, to see some scenic old homes and some cherry blossoms along the way.

Once to the Aerodrome, we dined at the Barn Stormer Grill in a great setting where we were able to watch planes take off and land as we ate burgers, chicken, fries and an assortment of salads and other good food. Even the service was great! After eating, we spent some time looking over the planes and cars, a tractor and even a surviving aircraft engine that was known for catastrophic failures in mid flight. While I don't remember the details, I am sure that its designers had not envisioned their creation being displayed in a museum because of how bad it was! Fortunately for pilots of the day, production was halted pretty early on. Looked a little like a Stag engine to me, only bulkier...coincidence?

Outside the museum were several more vintage aircraft. Our very own Michael Campsmith went in search of an opportunity to ride in a bi-plane only to find that there was no pilot available.Much to our dismay, he chickened out - I think he could have flown the thing had he only had the courage to give it a try. The dash looked very similar to a Triumph - I think he coulda done it, but we'll never know.

Thank you Art for a wonderful time and for planing and executing the first successful GTA drive of 2010

Whew! What a month this has been. So much has happenedin what seems now like a short period of time. Work was itstypical March madness. Not sure what it is about March, butit is always brutally busy when it comes to my job. Not toworry I have soldiered on to bring you more tales. This monthwas a first for me, it was my first ever GTA monthly meeting. No, the Stag didn't make the trek and probably never willsince my job lets out at an odd hour, which conflicts with themeeting schedule, which limits my ability to drive home, getthe car and then go to the meeting. Maybe someday theplanets will align and it'll work out.

In any case, I had a grand time, met some new peopleand spent a bit of time at the Iron Horse with a few I alreadyknow a bit. So what have I done on the cars? Well, that is abit interesting. I hauled out the undersized radiator I hadbeen sporting in the Stag, and took delivery of a nice shiny Griffin aluminum number from Summit Racing. They had a sale on radiators this month, much to my joy, with a whopping 25% off. Hooah! So I spent the better part of a weekend figuring out a way to shoehorn this baby into the Stag maw....which I must say is extremely limited space. As you may or may not know, I have spanking new paint, so the job was compounded a bit by the desire to keep it as such. Nevertheless, I removed the hood, engine accessories and bits here and there to make some room to work in. In all it took a full 8 hours to install and fabricate hoses, mounts and the like. The good news is cooling seems to have improved and I may have gained a few horsepower since the water pump no longer struggles as much to circulate the water. I have taken it on one small trip to test for leaks and one mid range trip to monitor temps. My first big trip in this car since the refit will be this coming weekend. I'm doing the Chris Gore tour so if any of you are making it I'll see you there and hopefully not need a jump or tow! I don't know why I'm nervous about it, the car is in better shape than it has been in years, better than the time my wife and I drove it from northeast Missouri to central Texas and back, heck we didn't even have a working gas gauge back then. The difference is probably age and experience. I know too much now, and as such I know what can go wrong. Ultimately, I'll be in good company, and you know what? If you're going to breakdown let it be with fellow enthusiasts...hey, you might even get an award for it at the end of the year.

Do you own a British car? Of course you do or you would not be reading this newsletter. Do you have problems with your British car? Of course you do, it is British isn't it? Do you want great repairs at reasonable prices? Of course you do, we all do.

Well, by now you all know I am back repairing old British cars in a very convenient location. 1666 Whitlock Road, off of Sandy Plains Road about 1/4 mile from Sprayberry High School and my labor rate is only $55.00 per hour. It has not changed since scientists proved that black holes exist and O.J. was falsley accused of murder. That is almost 15 years ago. I can do almost two hours work for most other shops 1hours worth.

I have been a Moss distributor and customer since 1973. My customer number with them is still my old original shop phone number; that is how long I have been dealing with Moss Motors. I order most of my parts from them and when the parts are for your car, I split my discount with them with you. Now their discount is not that great, 30% at most, but I take my cost and add the list cost then divide by two. I make a few dollars and you save a few. As an example, a Borg & Beck clutch lists for $172.95 and my last cost was $121.07. I charged $147.01 for it. I think that is fair to both of us. I have over 35 years experience working on old Briish cars. They weren't old when i started working on them. I know what makes them tick, click, purr and growl. Any problem can be solved. Noisy differentials, slipping clutches, shorting electrics or poor running, nothing is too small or too large. I have seen and repaired everything that can go wrong at least once. I have installed hundreds of convertible tops, built hundreds of engines and transmisions; you name it and I have probably repaired it. So if you need any help, please give me a call at 770-689-7573 and let us discuss your problems. There is never, nor has there ever been a charge for talking (and I am quite good at that). I am always wiling to offer my help or advice when you call.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. -Barry Rosenberg

Minutes from GTA meeting 2/16/2010Submitted by Michael Campsmith, GTA Secretary/Activities Director

The weather on Tuesday night was warm enough to entice 7 Triumphs to be driven to the March meeting. 21members and guests were on the porch at the Norcross Station Café, and the fans were on instead of the heaters—a step in the right direction!

Meeting was called to order at 7:02 PM by GTA Director Jim Orr.

New member—Nelson Berdecia lives south of downtown and is in the process of acquiring a TR3 that needs some restoration and sorting out. He is towing the car back from Virginia this weekend and will be looking to the club to provide advice and expertise as he moves forward with the British car hobby. Welcome to the club, Nelson! Treasurer's report (Sue Hurst)—Balance at the end of February was approximately $3,090. During the month we took in nearly $500 from memberships; expenses were for postage, printing and insurance.

Model expert program (Hermann Schaller)—Hermann was unable to attend due to illness. Even though he was feeling under the weather, Hermann traveled to Jekyll Island last weekend to review the location for the VTR National that will be held in October. He communicatedto Jim that the location is nice, but there is currently no event facility for the banquet—evidently the plan is to hold the banquet in a big tent. Another concern is parking, both for vehicles driven to the meet as well as trailers and tow vehicles. The club needs to get a list of attendees and start planning committees and work assignments. More information will be passed on as it becomes available. If you are interested in being listed in the vehicle consultant program please send your contact information and vehicle of interest to Hermann ([email protected]).

Membership (Gary Wilmerding)—Gary was not in attendance. At the last meeting the membership stood at 73; likely that has increase based on the amount of revenue we took in last month. We will have Gary update the membership numbers when they are available. Again there was discussion regarding an updated Member’s Directory for 2010. People voiced concerns about ensuring the contact information would only be viewable by paid club members. The webmaster and membership director will look into what it will take to put together an electronic directory with sufficient security/confidentiality protections.

Webmaster (Toby Holden)—Toby was not in attendance. The website continues to receive highly favorable comments. The website will be the main medium for finding information about all the doings of the club, from membership renewals to events to newsletters to changes in the calendar. Logon for the site is the first initial of your first name and the spelling of your last name; password default is gta123. After signing on you will be prompted to change your password. Toby canpost pictures of your car, so send content for posting (pictures, event write-ups, etc.) to [email protected].

Activities (Michael Campsmith) —The website calendar will be the main method for distributing information about upcoming events. If you have information about any events (car shows, drives, etc.) please send to Michael at [email protected] or [email protected]. Include as much information as possible--place/date/time, contact person, website, etc.--and Michael will post on the calendar.

Upcoming events:Saturday, March 20--drive to the Peach State Aerodrome in Williamson, GA. This location will take you back to the way air travel used to be. The grounds contains a museum, restaurant, airplanes undergoing restoration, and the opportunity for biplane rides. You can check it out at http://www.peachstateaero.com/dotnetnuke/. Departure point is the Olive Garden restaurant at 3011 Turner Hill Road, Lithonia, GA 30038; meet around 9:30 with first car out at 10 AM. Art Hays has planned an approximately 2-hour drive to our destination at the Barnstormer’s Grill, 349 Jonathon Roost Road, Williamson, GA 30292. If you can’t make the drive please consider joining us for lunch in the afternoon.

Saturday, April 3—Chris Gore’s Spring Tour. This starts with BYO lunch on the lawn of Chris and Poolie’s place in Dahlonega and then a drive on some twisty mountain roads—groups are spread out for “spirited” or “sedate” pacing. Details will be on the GTA calendar once available.

March 29-April 2—Mitty Races at Road Atlanta. This is a chance to see vintage racers in a number of classes. Camping at Turn 5 is a time-honored tradition. Steave Freeman bought a VIP package that includes parking, track time, meet and great with the drivers, and other goodies—if you are considering this package you need to purchase ASAP as quantities are limited.

Saturday, May 15—British Car Day at Berry College in Rome. The club will need volunteers to man our tent for recruiting new members, selling regalia, and keeping things in general order. Main dish and soft drinks will be provided by the club; members should bring a dish to pass—nothing that can melt or spoil in the sun. The event website is active at http://www.atlantabritishmotorcarday.com/. You need to download and print the registration form and then mail back with your registration fee. There is no cost to attend the event, but if you want your car on the field you need to pay the registration, with all proceeds going to the Lion’s Club.

March 12-14—Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. Day of the show is March 14. Information available at https://www.ameliaconcours.org/default.asp. Some GTA members plan to attend; contact Hermann Schaller if you want to join the caravan.

Sunday, June 6—The Allure of the Automobile at the High Museum. This event will have an $18/person entry fee and $12/car parking fee. We plan to meet at the Museum on a Sunday afternoon to view the show and then eat afterwards. Michael will contact the museum to see if we can get preferred parking at the entrance to the museum. If anyone has suggestions for a lunch spot please send to Michael. More details on the cars in the exhibit is at www.high.org.

Newsletter (Tony Graham)—Newsletter has good amount of content for the next edition. Send him pictures, articles, recipes, anything at all, to [email protected]. Help out your newsletter editor—If you attend an event please take pictures and write an article for the newsletter.

Tech Questions:There were a few tech questions at the end of the meeting.

Chic Fries—Brake lights remain on even though the pedal is not depressed; was not a problem before but came about suddenly. Suggestion was to check hydraulic switch; if that isn’t the cause then check wiring back to the brake light sockets.

Jim Orr—Tachometer issues with noise and needle bouncing. Suggestions were to ensure cable is correct length (critical) and square up ends. Also that there have been some poor quality aftermarket parts from major vendors. Mike Hurst mentioned Speedometer Services in Alpharetta as a local vendor who can make up custom-length tach cables.

Guests in attendance—Philip and Sandra Allen currently live in Canada but have a house in Georgia in which they are contemplating full-time residence. Philip is from the birthplace of Triumphs (aka England) and is a factory-trained Triumph mechanic. Through the years he has owned at least 38 British automobiles and even campaigned a racing Triumph. Philip has a repair shop in Ontario, Canada but he and Sandra also have a house in Georgia. They are considering a move “Down South” and perhaps setting up a British repair shop as well. We hope that Philip and Sandra will keep the GTA in mind as they make their decisions for the future.

Scott Shepherd was in attendance. Scott is a former club president and has been a member off and on for many years. We were glad to see Scott again and hope to see him at future meetings and events.

Meeting adjourned at 7:51 PM.

A Barn Find Spit Six!

As I approached my retirement after 36 years with the Army Corps ofEngineers, I knew that I needed a new car project. My 1980 Triumph Spitfirerestoration is approaching 10 years old, and I wanted something unique to build. Would it be another Spit? Nah. Maybe a TR-6? Naw, not unique enough. A kit car? Shelby Cobra, Lotus 7? Nope, too much up front money. I wanted something that I could work on and pay for as I go along and still be fairly unique. Then I saw the GTA newsletter for July, 2008. Hugh McAleer placed an ad for a partially completed Spit Six being sold by a young friend of his. I got some pictures emailed to me, and I pulled the trigger. I could finish a Spit Six!

The Ubiquitous U-Haul

I made a reservation with U-Haul for a tow dolly for a one day, one way rental. I headed up one Saturday to Zebulon, Georgia, just south of Atlanta. From Savannah, it took just under 4 hours.I found the car with its front nose just poking out of a small barn behind Don Birath’s, Brandon’s dad's, house. The car was in pretty rough shape and mostly there. In pieces. We disconnected the drive shaft, and tied down the bonnet with straps and bungee cords. Several boxes of parts filled the cockpit up to the top of the doors. Looking back, it’s a wonder that the old tires (and Rotoflex “doughnuts”) made it back to Savannah without shredding!

Digging In

Now, the first thing to determine is whether the engine would start in the first place. The car didn’t have an alternator or a muffler. Sorting through my parts shelf, I found an alternator with the right kind of connectors. With a little gas injected into the dual Strombergs and the gas line attached to a portable gas can (clean gas!), the engine started right up without a knock or rattle! It turns out that the engine and chassis was from a late 1972 GT6 MkIII, with the body from a 1978 Spit 1500. The tub needed new floor pans, and the bottom of the “B” pillars on both sides had fist-sized rust holes. Both of the front outriggers at the firewall and the front crossmembers were pretty well “knackered” from collisions and road salt corrosion. Just where did this GT6 Chassis come from?

Be afraid...be very afraid

Now to figure out the final “build out” configuration.

At first, I spent some time looking into triple side draft Webbers. But I found that I needed as special “step down” intake manifold in order to clear the downward slope of the bonnet. Also, there was word about that unless I was planning on full-out Historic Racing that the engine would “bog down” and stall with the three Webers. In the fall issue of “Spitfire and GT6” (I think), there was an article from Dan Hermann where he described his adventure of installing a supercharger in his Spitfire 1500. Hmmmmmmmm.

Then, in November 2008, there was an article in the VTR monthly magazine that described an “updated” TR-6 with some of the more modern drivability and reliability improvements. That article described the installation of a new wiring loom, a Ford Type 9 Five Speed tranny, a new electronic ignition system, a Limited Slip Differential and fuel injection. Double Hmmmmmmmmmm.

I found Bennett French had an eBay store where much of the items/services were for sale and we struck a deal. Here’s the build out on the engine:

Supercharger (5 psi boost)Engine Rebuild with new Oil Pump, lightened pistons, valves and pushrodsRoller Rocker Valve Train, with Double Valve SpringsBalanced, ported and polished head and crankshaftFord Type 9 5 Speed Transmission and shortened drive shaftAluminum front and rear engine platesAluminum water pump housingOil Cooler with upgraded for cartridge oil filtersNew Electronic Ignition ARP bolts and fasteners throughoutNipondenso AlternatorAluminum RadiatorSalisbury Limited Slip DifferentialLightened flywheel

I added the following from Canley Classics:CV Joint rear axelsLightweight allow front hubs, etc.Upgraded front spindlesUpgraded front road springsGAX Adjustable shocks all around

From eBay, I scored a set of Toyota four-pot front brake calipers with slotted brake rotors. With all of the “new” horsepower, I gotta be able to stop!

Get 'r Done

I delivered the engine to Bennett French’s shop in Henderson, North Carolina in January, 2009, bringing my wife along for a Bed and Breakfast in Ashville, just up the road. In the meantime, I started taking the car apart, loading each piece in boxes and bags identify what the part was and where it’s supposed to go.

After purchasing the third can of “Aircraft” paint remover, I noticed that one of the doors was black, under white, under yellow all over a red primer. So that’s when I named the Spit Six project “Joseph” for having a “coat of many colors.”

By March 2009, I constructed a rotisserie out of a pair of Harbor Freight engine stands and a few feet of steel channel. I had to position the front end of the car under a heavy beam over my carport. I attached the rear of the car at the bumper bracket to the back end of the rotisserie. I lifted the front end of the tub (of course after I fabricated two braces for the doors) with a pair of come-alongs. When the tub was high enough, I was able to roll the chassis out from under the tub.As I said, the chassis had several front pieces that were damaged by road salt and collision damage. I wire brushed the paint off the frame down to bare metal, and ground off the front crossmember and the two mid-point outriggers. Time to learn how to weld!

My first weld was for the driver-side outrigger. After welding with the flux-core wire welder, and grinding down the results, the weld didn’t look half bad. That why I started with a piece of the frame located under the tub! By the time I welded the front cross members and pivot boxes, I was getting pretty handy with the Hobart welder. I could have had someone with some welding skill come over and weld them in place for me, but as “Click and Clack” say on their radio show “Car Talk”, “every project is a good excuse for some new tools!”

By September 2009, the differential arrived. In the meantime, I powder coated the front and rear suspension pieces a bright yellow, the rear leaf spring and the two front springs a bright red. Powdercoating the rear leaf spring required the construction of an oven extension box to fit over the spring with the spring half hanging out of the oven. Bennett finally got finished with the engine rebuild and his firm, Standard Performance, went belly-up during the summer. But he was good to his word and completed (mostly) the engine by October. Anxious to get my hands on the engine, I met him with his new business partners, at the Euro Fest outside of Greenville, South Carolina. After I got there, Bennett indicated that he still needed to install the roller rockers, push rods and the supercharger pulley system and that he would travel down to Savannah for the final build and startup.

By Christmas 2009, the road wheels were added and I was able to roll the chassis out from under the carport into the garage. Looking good!

In January, I added the brake and fuel lines, along with the handbrake cables. I’m still waiting on the transmission to be delivered. Once installed, I’ll have Bennett come down and get the engine sorted out and started. In the meantime, I’ll be working on the body panel replacement now that the weather is improving. My goal is to have the car fully sorted out and running in time for the National VTR at Jekyll Island in October, 2010. More to come…….

-Daniel
