Driver’s Seat by Ashford Little

I sure hope October brings us fall as it’s been hot… darn hot, but fall is top down weather and since I’ve yet to install my soft top I might have to go topless!

Fall gets busy for most folks for a variety of reasons, but I hope you have the opportunity to take in some of the GTA events as well as other LBC drives. Don’t forget that events like the HSR & Petit LeMans races take place at Road Atlanta. We are very fortunate to have a place where we a short drive takes us to one of the top tracks in the country. The 6-Pack Trials which are taking place in the St. Louis area are the 1st weekend of October so we will know where the 2020 TRials will take place very soon. The VTR National in Dripping Springs Texas are the week following the Trials so that’s another announcement coming our way soon. I encourage everyone to attend the large Triumph gatherings. The road trip is part of the fun and you can usually round up several buddies to travel in style with.

Speaking of traveling I haven’t been doing much of that myself, at least in my TR6. I replace the clutch master cylinder recently knowing that would fix things. Well, it didn’t. My clutch isn’t releasing totally (tech session was on the 28th). Hopefully I’ll have some answers soon, but it’s driving me nuts not to be able to drive my car! I’m afraid that the transmission (a Toyota tranny at that) could be the culprit. Hell, my Triumph transmission in my white car lasted forty years before it needed attention. We shall see.

I also won’t be doing quite as much traveling as I’m scheduled to have not one, but two knee surgeries this fall. In fact, I know that I’ll miss the October GTA meeting at The Crossings so please show up anyway. I’m going to ask whether he recommends using Dot 4 or Dot 5 on my replacement knee.

Luckily we have a few extra cars this fall as one son is in his freshman year of college and can’t bring a car to school while my eldest is abroad.

So my mind is occupied a bit with the future. We will be planning for next year with our 1st meeting of the GTA planning committee (everyone is welcome) and it takes place on Thursday, October 3rd at 4240 Wickersham Drive. Please come and help us plan our future. Another item in the not too distant future is the GTA annual elections. Please let me know if you want to serve as an officer or just wish to help with event planning.

Down the road a bit is the GTA Christmas party, and there is one item that I keep forgetting to mention. We will be having an auction for a photograph from the 1992 VTR Convention which the GTA hosted in Savannah, GA. The photograph was donated by a GTA member and is a framed panoramic photo. It’s really nice and will go to the highest bidder. Proceeds will be added to the ALS fund collected at this year’s annual Polar Bear Run. PBR? Yep, we are headed to Cloudland Canyon with an overnight option in Chattanooga, TN.

Thanks for everyone’s help, and I look forward to getting back on my feet and pushing a working clutch in my TR.

Happy Motoring,

Ashford

Southside Report

The September meeting of the S o u t h s i d e GTA g r o u p w a s enthusiastically attended by 15 members and guest. As usual, good food, cold beverages and friendly conversation preceded o u r m e e t i n g . O l d b u s i n e s s discussions included a review of the garage day at Tom Freeman’s house replacing brakes and brake lines on his latest addition, a 1973 TR-6. Additionally, Tom reviewed some of the other work performed on the ’73 in an effort to be drivable for the Atlanta British Car Fayre. Tom Horvat gave us a review of his latest interior upgrades including new carpet and interior panels. Griffin Root proudly proclaimed that his ’73 TR-6 project was back on the road again after extensive repairs, the latest of which was replacing the dash pad, crash pads and re-veneering the wood dash. Finally, we discussed the upcoming Atlanta British Car Fayre and made plans to meet in Norcross. After the meeting we retired to the parking lot to inspect and talk over the 8 Triumphs driven to the meeting.

Mountain division Report

The Mountain Division of GTA had our first meeting/luncheon in Blue Ridge in August with 6 people able to attend. We gained one new member. Our focus was how to build our new Mountain Division. We scheduled our next meeting for Oct 3rd.

The British Car Fayre in Norcross proved to be very special for us. Three of our cars were there. We diligently canvassed the group, meeting 10 new prospects interested in the Mountain Division. Tom and Marcia Butler with their 1959 TR3A from Morgantown, GA, won Best in Show out of the many Triumphs there. They had previously won 2nd place in their category in the Concours d’Elegance judging at the TRA 2019 National Meet in Dillard, GA in May.

Our October 3rd luncheon will be at Shenanigans Irish Pub in Dahlonega at 11:30. Some of the people we met in Norcross will.be joining us. We have ongoing efforts to find more Triumphs in North Georgia. Great for the Mountain Division and GTA at large.

If anyone in the greater GTA family have friends with Triumphs in our area, please reach out to us with their information so we can contact them.

Lynn Hill

GTA Monthly Meeting September 19, 2019

The meeting was held at the Crossings Steak House in Norcross Georgia and Called to order by GTA President Ashford Little at 7:45 PM

Ashford recognized and welcomed new members as follows: Joe Collins and his wife Cheryl joined the club at British Car Fayre in Norcross. They own a red 1975 TR6. Joe like so many of us has liked his Triumph model since he was a teen and finally bought one. He likes to tinker and drive his classic car and he is pleased that his wife also enjoys their new hobby. Joe is an avid Tennis player should anybody in the club want to play, track him down!

Jack and Stella Wissner also joined the club recently and they introduced themselves though they were already familiar to several of us. The Wissners have attended some GTA events in the past including a dart night last winter and a drive or two. They really like the people, the cars and the events. They do not currently own a Triumph, but they own a few collector card including a Jag and Jack races a Miata. We are very happy to have them with the GTA!

James Hudson was also attending for the first time finding the GTA during his search for his stolen GT6. His story is involved and has taken him 3 years to find the car and the shop owner who converted it to cash for his pocket and then dropped out of sight! We hope that he will write the story up for the Trumpet newsletter when he accomplishes a resolution.

Old Business: Sue Hurst could not join us for the meeting, but Ashford spoke to her earlier in the day and verified that we do have money (that is the treasury report for the month). Seriously, the club account is holding steady while funding the various expenses of the club like web hosting and club events.

Activities Director, Mark Post likewise could not join us for this meeting.

Norcross British Car Fayre was again a success though quite hot. Triumph was the featured marque this year and some 50 Triumphs were shined up and on display at the event. Usually quite comfortable, this year’s temps were in the 90’s, but there were the usual bountiful spectators, and Norcross businesses rolled out the red carpet for the event

as they always do. Still considered to be the top British Car event in the region by many, we look forward to returning next year.

New Business: This weekend there is a drive and show hosted by the Columbus British Car Club called Brits in the Valley. See the GTA Calendar for details if you would like to join in the fun.

September 27th brings the Atlanta Historic Races at Road Atlanta.

The GTA will have a planning meeting at the Orr’s home on October 3rd. We are looking for all members with ideas for events or destinations to join us in filling out the event calendar for 2020. Please RSVP to Jim Orr ([email protected]) as we will serve brats and fixings and we want to make sure we have enough. The meeting starts at 7:00 PM There are many opportunities to drive your cars in 2020 and we want to get them on the calendar.

Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta begins Friday October 9th – another fun event for racing fans.

6 Pack Trials are in St Louis this year October 3-6th. The 6 Pack is a Triumph Club that focuses on TR6’s and TR250’s. Trials for 2020 will be closer. These events are highly recommended!

VTR Nationals in Dripping Springs, TX, October 6th – 11th.

The meeting was closed at 8:08 PM.

Atlanta Garage Party When Friday, October 18, 8:00pm – 11:00pm Where TBD Description http://atlgarageparty.com/attend.htm

The Atlanta Garage Party is a monthly social event for people who own collectable or modified cars of any condition, and work on them themselves. It takes place somewhere in the larger metro-Atlanta area on every third Friday of the month, at ~8pm. Usually it lasts to between 11pm and midnight. It is not for people who only read car magazines and watch Top Gear, or collect cars that others work on. If you are one of those, please keep that a secret. If you would like to host one of these parties, then you need to be a person who attends them, and has gotten to know others in the group. Although exceptions are sometimes made, the intent is to have these parties in people's home garages, not at their businesses. If you, your spouse, children, and family pets spend more time at your place of business than at your house, or if the two have kinda merged, or if your business is just cool beyond words (Bryan Fuller), then you have a good chance of hosting there. We would like to meet your spouse and children and let them know that you have an enabling support group around you that you can fall back on when you are disowned by them.

Please feel free to invite any males that fit this description, and any females whatsoever. Very closely-supervised children can come also. Please do bring pictures of your current projects, or pieces of the project, or videos of your last track day, or business cards, party favors, or whatever to show off. If you have a 1929 Miller Indy car supercharger housing with a hairline crack in it that you are wondering how to repair, then just throw it in your trunk and bring it along. Unsolicited advice will be plentiful. But, dress to please the wenches, not to handle the wrenches.

If you have friends that would like to receive these messages, please have them come to some parties. They can also send the site an email with pictures of their current car projects for qualification analysis.

Thrust Washer Check By Ashford Little

I was a little worried that this tech session would be a ten minute job and then we’d be looking at each other and wondering what to do. Like most Triumph jobs this didn’t turn out to be the case. I think everyone who attended really and truly got a lot out of this inspection and diagnosis of my TR6 engine. I’m willing to bet that most Triumph owners have at least heard the term thrust washer. I’d be willing to bet that 80% of those folks have never laid eyes or hands on one, myself included until today.

This tech session was attended by myself, Tom Hodges, Vic Richardson, Dan Crosson, Earl Ferguson, Jack Wissner and Nick Mencher. Tom Hodges led the way on guiding us and making sure we didn’t mess anything up. Thank you Tom for all your help!

13

Volume 35, Issue 10 October 2019

I had previously measured the end play of the crankshaft and determined that it was out of spec. We have measured about 16 thousandths, but I wanted to do it again and dropping the oil pan also gave us the opportunity to measure the thrust washers themselves and reverse verify out math skills. We had more than several discussions on the math and what that meant to ordering replacement thrust washers.

The good news was that upon dropping said oil pan we found no thrust washers sitting at the bottom of the pan. There was a little bit of metal debris, but the main bearing looked in decent shape. Perhaps that’s a discussion for another day as to whether we go ahead and replace the bearings “while we’re at it.”

You might recall that this whole thing came about as a result of a “not completely cooperative” clutch which didn’t wasn’t to disengage. Jim aka Bodine is somehow behind this, but we’ve yet to figure out how or why. We did discover that the front thrust washer, which appeared to be made of steel exhibited on wear; which is what we expected. The rear thrust washer did show wear and measured .085. Factory spec for the thrust washers is .092.

My intent is to order two new thrust washers after conferring with Scott at Custom Thrust Washers. He makes new thrust washers that are solid bronze alloy. After everyone is buttoned back up - stay tuned for that tech session date - we may or may not have fixed the clutch issue. My money is no and that we’ll have another “learning opportunity.” That learning op will mean the transmission gets pulled and we dig a little deeper into the mystery. I had a great time; learning and fixing is fun! Hope to see more of you at the new go round. It’s never too late to teach an old dog new tricks!

Ashford

of his Spitfire. Susan and I no sooner get out of our cars and here comes Joe Garcia. I think that is referred to as automotive choreography. We wandered and took in some of the sights, everything you can imagine from 1962 fuel injected Corvette, Chevy Vega wagon, MGA, MGB, MG Midget, 356, 911, 912 and a 907 Porsche. Volkswagen drop side, dual cab truck, 1957 surface rusted, sorry patinaed Chevy truck that did a huge burnout on departing, a Mini, classic, a mint Mercedes Benz 300 SL Gullwing, divine car, Mustang convertible, Mustang Fastback, Morgan 3 wheeler and a Morgan Plus 4, 1957 Chevy Nomad, that’s a 2 door wagon, very desirable, two Cobras, a Valiant wagon and a handful of American hotrods, think 1934 Fords.

There was something for everyone. This is an event that was created by Father Steve Cripps and the only stipulation is that the car must be 25 plus years of age. This eliminates some of the shenanigans that goes on at Caffeine and Octane and gives you a more laid back, easy going monthly car show on the first Sunday. Come out, you will be pleased.

POP® Rivets by Jim Doran

A British (!!) invention from the early 20th century, POP rivets are a mainstay in OEM fabrication and vehicle repair today. The concept began with a company making shoe eyelets. Some bright person came up with the idea of combining a shoe eyelet with a common nail to make a two-piece mechanical fastener that could be used in “blind” applications where access to the back side of the application was not possible or practical. At the time of the POP rivet’s invention solid or “buck” rivets were popular in truck body and coach work. But using solid rivets required two workers, one to hold the solid rivet in place on one side of the work material while another working on the back side hammered or peened over the tail of the solid rivet. Likewise, the need for two workers is true using a bolt and nut. During the First World War, POP rivets gained a reputation as a speedy way to make sheet metal repairs to aircraft during the Battle of Briton. In addition to being a blind fastener, POP rivets are also vibration and tamper proof.

Today, POP, which is a brand name of Stanley Black & Decker, and their generic “blind rivet” competitors offer a wide variety of material and diameter combinations.

Sizing a POP rivet

In the early 1960’s, a USA company, United Shoe Machinery (USM), started making and marketing POP rivets to industrial and repair customers, establishing an industry wide convention for designating blind rivets. See example below for an ABL66A which is a 3/16” rivet all aluminum POP rivet with a maximum grip range of 3/8”.

1st letter Rivet material: A - Alum, S - Steel, SS – Stainless, C - Copper

2nd letter Head style: B - Buttonhead; C - Countersunk

3rd letter (if any) L - Large flange head

1st number 6 - Body diameter in 32nds { 6/32= 3/16”}

2nd number 6 - Max. grip length in 16ths {6/16= 3/8”}

Final letter(s) A - Aluminum mandrel S - Stainless steel mandrel B - Brass mandrel

C - Copper plated steel mandrel CLD - Closed End; MG - Multi-Grip No letter indicates steel mandrel

There are five (5) standard POP rivet diameters: 3/32”, 1/8”, 5/32”, 3/16” and ¼”. In addition to diameter selection, it is important to know how much material is being riveted together to determine the required grip range. For example, POP riveting two 1/8” in sheets of steel would produce a ¼” “stack up” (.125” + .125”=.250”). In the example above, the maximum grip range is 3/8” while the minimum grip range for this POP rivet would be ¼”. The minimum grip range is not represented in the rivet’s part number. You would need to check the packaging label or the rivet manufacture’s catalog online. For the best possible joint, use a POP rivet that has a grip range that matches your application. However, if the rivet has too much grip for the application and you have back side access, they do sell blind rivet back-up washers that have an inside diameter that matches the manufactures hole size recommendation. Lastly, it is important to create a hole that is within the manufacturer’s recommend range for the strongest assembly.

Materials & Finishes

In general, it is recommended that the POP rivet’s body material match the material of the application. For example, if you are fastening two sheets of steel, use a steel body rivet, stainless, use a stainless body and with aluminum use an aluminum body. This reduces the possibility of galvanic corrosion. Most hardware stores offer a limited selection of POP rivets in different materials so you may need to go to an industrial fastener distributor like Fastenal to get the right rivet. The most common materials are steel, aluminum and stainless steel. Copper is available for gutter and architectural applications.

You will also see combinations of materials. For example, a POP rivet with an aluminum body and a steel mandrel is common. Using a steel mandrel allows the manufacturer to use a harder grade of aluminum resulting in a rivet with higher shear and tensile strengths. Of course, the steel mandrel will rust if exposed to the elements so that has to be taken into consideration.

Steel POP rivets typically have a zinc plated body and sometimes the mandrel is zinc plated too. A zinc plated steel bodied POP rivet with a zinc plated mandrel will still rust in exterior use. While the mandrel may be zinc plated, when the rivet is set, the break point where the mandrel separates from the mandrel ball will be raw steel.

Painted POP rivets are popular in racing for use with sheet metal components like bodies and aerodynamic devices. If you Google “painted POP rivets”, you find plenty of suppliers offering a variety of colors and sizes. Of course, for a few POP rivets you can shove them into a piece of cardboard and rattle-can spray them.

Styles of POP rivets

POP style rivets are generally referred to as open end rivets as opposed to structural blind rivets. If you will look at the image below, notice how the broken off mandrel head is at the bottom of the rivet contained in the mushroomed head it formed during the setting process. The shear forces in this type of rivet are carried by the tubular body of the rivet alone. With a structural rivet, commonly called a Monobolt, shown below, the mandrel breaks flush in the shear plane. I hear about guys putting ultralights together with POP rivets and I cringe. Hopefully, they know enough to know the difference.

Open End Blind Rivet

Structural Blind Rivet

Structural rivets are designed to replace nuts and bolts without sacrificing shear and tensile strength. They are tamperproof and vibration resistant.

Closed End

Closed end POP rivets are made in a way that encapsulates the mandrel head creating a leak proof seal. Another nice thing about this rivet is that the mandrel “BB” can’t come loose helping to avoid a short circuit or a rattle with the BB bouncing around inside a door panel.

Peel Type Rivets

Popular when you have an oversized hole or a soft secondary (back) sheet. For example, fastening a steel top panel to a blow molded plastic back panel.

Mulitgirps

These are like your regular open-end POP rivets but have a much larger grip range. They do sacrifice some strength due to the need to use a softer grade of aluminum to get the rivet to work over the larger grip range.

Blind Rivet Tools

Generally, a hand plier style tool works great for open end POP rivets 3/16” all aluminum and below. When setting 3/16” steel and any ¼” diameter rivet, the hedge trimmer style tool or scissor action tool is in order. To get the best set, be sure to use the right nose piece for the diameter of the rivet you are setting.

Removing POP rivets

I recommend you use a drill the same size of the rivet’s diameter. For example, an 1/8” drill for a 4 size (4/32” or 1/8”) rivet. Drill gently into the open throat of the rivet to the point where you can separate the rivet’s head from the body. Then push the body out of the hole or use an extractor to remove the body from the top.

Plastic POP Rivets

Available at most parts stores, these operate like their metal cousins. However, most are dimensioned if millimeters, available in 5, 6, 6.3 and 7 mm. As with the metal POP rivets, the plastic rivets are engineered to work in specific grip ranges. You can use your regular POP rivet tool though they do make a hand tool designed specifically for plastic POP rivets. When set, they “petal” out like a peel rivet.

POP rivets are a speedy versatile way to fasten components. Just keep in mind that if the assembly you need to fasten needs to come apart sometime in its life, a threaded fastener is probably a better choice. The 7 greatest racing movies, according to

Hagerty readers by Kyle Smith // August 27, 2019

Copied from the Hagerty Website and reformatted for the newsletter

Hollywood is all about drama and excitement, which explains why a good number of films revolving around cars have a racing base. Last week on the Hagerty Forums, we asked readers to call out their favorite racing movies. Here are the top seven picks.

Le Mans

https://youtu.be/228f-dPxI3Q

The Steve McQueen classic. Most commenters noted that the opening scenes of McQueen puttering around in a Porsche 911 set the bar for the rest of the flick. From there the plot doesn’t really climb, but the exhaust note certainly does. The feeling of true race cars at full speed was not faked; footage shot during the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans was used to create the fictional race portrayed in the film.

Grand Prix

MGM

The usage of genuine on-track footage carries over to the second-most-mentioned flick, Grand Prix. The 1966 movie centered around F1 racing—specifically, racing at the storied Monaco Grand Prix. Director John Frankenheimer’s initial plan to use standard camera tricks to capture 180-mph footage was left behind in favor of developing a rig attached to the side of a camera car that could remotely pan and tilt.

The Fast and The Furious

Universal Pictures

36

Page 37: GTA Trumpet OCTOBER 2019 · 2019-10-03 · Volume 35, Issue 10 October 2019 ENJOY THE FALL DRIVING WEATHER 1 THE TRUMPET The Official Publication of the Georgia Triumph Association

Volume 35, Issue 10 October 2019

Love it or hate it, the effects of this street racing movie are now being felt in the car market. Even with the late Paul Walker playing lead, the cars were the stars that kicked off the seemingly never-ending stream of The Fast and The Furious sequels—and now, spinoffs. These films brought tuner culture out from the shadows and into the limelight. Jokes about import cars aside, some of the vehicles featured in the film were the real deal and packed big horsepower.

RUSH

Universal Pictures

Ron Howard’s 2013 spectacle focused on the rivalry between Niki Lauda and James Hunt that grew large during the 1976 Formula 1 season. The racing of this era was a gauntlet, with racers risking everything each time they strapped into the seat of their open-wheeled racers. The reality of this massive risk is documented in the film, as it shows real footage that recorded Lauda’s Nürburgring crash, which left him disfigured for life. There is also CGI mixed in, which might be why some viewers preferred the more classic movies—although their plot lines were significantly less developed.

Heart Like a Wheel

https://youtu.be/pGJZo44MOzI

Road and street racing movies seem to get all the glory, but Heart Like a Wheel tells the story of Shirley Muldowney, who broke through the glass ceiling of the NHRA and got her competition license for top fuel drag racing. The racing plays second fiddle to the story of Muldowney’s struggles to advance her racing career, but anytime we get to hear a nitro-fueled Hemi cackle and watch a slingshot smoke the tires, we’re happy.

“Action-packed” is an understatement for On Any Sunday, which attempts to document the high-octane, throttle-twisting lifestyle of 1970s motorcycle enthusiasts. Bruce Brown (of Endless Summer fame) followed three of the top names of the era—Mert Lawwill, Steve McQueen, and Malcolm Smith—in an attempt to capture the “why” of motorcycle racing. Similar to the other mentions on this list, much of the racing is real and filmed in the heat of the action, which gives the film authenticity beyond belief.

In the Pits with Barry Rosenberg

How to make what started as a good day suck. Today was going to be a good day at the shop; I was going to complete installing the dash in a Spitfire; help a customer polish a ring and pinion gear set; leave early to go home and cook. Tomorrow, Saturday, is our clubs annual picnic which I am going to make cole slaw to take. I like a sweet style like Chic-Fil-A used to make so I use their recipe for mine. Then we have a party to attend that evening and I plan to take some of my great mini salmon croquette with a dipping sauce and some home made chop liver (YUM).

It was a beautiful ride to work with the sun just starting to peek over the mountain ridges; cool temp outside so windows open and ac off. It really doesn’t work that well anyway. And no traffic! But the day turned very sour once at the shop. Nothing big but enough small stuff to irritate one’s soul. To start, as soon as I pulled into my barn, I saw trash on the grass. Not that I am the neatest person, but I know it wasn’t there yesterday.

I consider myself a pretty nice guy most of the time. A neighbor across the street from my barn once parked a truck, trailer and boat in my yard without asking. I got to the barn and had no idea who it belonged to. I knew Patty didn’t buy it for me so I let it sit. No, I did not call the police as I figured there had to be a logical explanation; and there was one. My neighbor, who I now know, goes to the lake with his family in the boat and sometimes gets home pretty late . When it is dark out, he can’t back the trailer and truck up his very steep, narrow and curvy driveway so he left it in my yard until daytime when he could see.

I could not back it up no matter how bright it would be as his driveway is very difficult. So I told him now that I knew who owned it, no problem; do it anytime you need. Very neighborly of me. Last week, I came by the barn on a Saturday with Patty and Bolt, so he could poop as his farts were getting terrible and frequent, there he was playing baseball with his young son who used to stop by the shop daily after school to play with Bolt. His son was on a school team and I thought it was great they were outside doing father son stuff and not inside playing video games.

Bolt was distracted and would not do his business and as I waited, the kid almost clocked me in the head with a hit ball. So we quickly left and lived with the farts and opened windows. I told him again, no problem, just try not to break anything. Not having any windows on the front, I figured they were ok. But today, the day that was starting so good, was dampened by the trash they left behind yesterday. Really, I am nice enough to let

50

Page 51: GTA Trumpet OCTOBER 2019 · 2019-10-03 · Volume 35, Issue 10 October 2019 ENJOY THE FALL DRIVING WEATHER 1 THE TRUMPET The Official Publication of the Georgia Triumph Association

them play here where it is flat and open and this is how they thank me, with left behind trash.

Ok, I picked it up and cussed a little over their poor manners and went into the office. First thing I do in the morning is turn on my computer. I do not leave it on after I leave in the afternoon. The past several days, my Verizon internet had been dropping the signal several times a day but only for a few minutes. I am typing this now because the internet has not started since I have been here and I have been at the barn almost an hour. So, I can’t read or answer any emails; look at my bank balance; read Facebook; or look up parts.

I can either go to work or type this article. But, as today is trash day at the barn, I decide to sweep the loose dog hair off the floor and put in the trash. Let me ask now that if any of you visit me up here, and you are always welcome, and you bring a drink, please, put your trash in the can and not leave it on the floor. After a few days, a cup that once had sweet tea or coke with ice quenching your thirst, sits on the floor, the ice melts, the resulting liquid begins to mold and a broom hits it and knocks it over spilling the yucky contents on my floor for me to clean up. Thanks!

Or, several days after you leave, I find your discarded cup sitting on a shelf somewhere you thought it would be safe from getting spilled. And it was safe enough for you to forget it. Bolt loves ice, you could do as one friend does and give the ice to him and throw away your cup. Thank you.

The internet is finally working so I think I will check my email. To be continued. OK, I am back. It has been about 30 minutes and the internet is gone again. Mountain living has some great benefits but there are some huge drawbacks. Unreliable internet and phone service is one of them. I can’t get any land line service at the barn or our house and Verizon is the best choice up here. Better than AT&T and most others. What was that TV song, “farm living is the life for me; no, city living is the life for me, give me that TV and internet, or something like that.

Today, someone is coming up to work on a GT6 running gear for a Herald. The differential from the GT6 donor car had a minor problem in that it broken a spider gear and sheared the shaft it ran on. The broken gears pieces rattled around a little before the car stopped and chewed the ends of the pinion gear teeth. Spider gears are what allow your rear tires to negotiate a turn without scrubbing off lots of rubber.

As you go around the corner, the inside tire has a smaller radius than the outside tire. If the wheels were locked together, one would have to skip and jump some to turn at the

51

Page 52: GTA Trumpet OCTOBER 2019 · 2019-10-03 · Volume 35, Issue 10 October 2019 ENJOY THE FALL DRIVING WEATHER 1 THE TRUMPET The Official Publication of the Georgia Triumph Association

Volume 35, Issue 10 October 2019

same rpm as the other. Spider gears allow them to turn at different rpm. Limited slip differentials allow some slip in turns with a clutch pack instead of gears but lock the two wheels together when going straight. In a spider gear differential, called open diff., only one wheel pushes the car straight. The other is along for the ride.

Ever notice one long black streak in the road? That was a red neck with more horsepower than sense trying to show off. Most cars come with the open differential, until lately. New cars have electronically locking differentials way more complicated than even I understand how they work. A computer tells the gears when to lock and when to slip. There are variations on limited slip differentials but most of you will never need to know how they work as we will not ever pay the high dollars for one.

If you autocross or race, you can take advantage of them but for the street, the open one in your car is perfect. When we were racing my TR4A IRS car in vintage, I welded my differential to make it a locked one. When I drove it on the street, which I did a lot, you could here the tire skipping as you turned a corner. But man did it bite when you nailed the gas on the straight sections.

So, I mentioned we had some chipped teeth on a pinion gear. Why not replace it? One cannot replace only a pinion gear. It must be replaced as a matched set with a ring gear. How many know what I am talking about? I could just drop this part of the article or I could explain what the gears do. Since I like to talk (write) I will give a quick explanation. The ring and pinion gears are the system the transfers the rotation of the engine, by way of the transmission and driveshaft, 90 degrees to turn the wheels. They also make up the gear ration of your differential. Triumph TR6 has a 3.7:1 ration. MGB has a 3.9:1 ratio. GT6 has a 3.27:1 ratio. These are stock and there are variations. A TR6 has 10 teeth on the pinion gear and 37 teeth on a ring gear; thus the 3.7:1.

A pinion gear sits in the differential housing in line with the drive shaft. The larger ring gears sits on a shaft in line with the axles. The gears meet at roughly 45 degrees angle each turning the drive shaft rotation 90 degrees to turn the axles. Pinion gears are supported on two bearings and must be set up in the exact specified location. This is done with shims as thin as .002” thick. The ring gear is bolted to the carrier assembly which contains the spider gears. Two of the spider gears are splined to the axles and the other two are located on a shaft and join the two on the axles at 90 degrees.

The ring gear meshes with the pinion gear and must be set so it hits the pinion in the center of the teeth. This also requires setting the spacing with very thin shims. If either gear is out of position by just 1 or 2 thousandths, you get a whine or hum or worse, broken teeth. It takes more work to set up the gears in a differential than it takes to build

an engine. And you have to have very accurate measuring devices. This is not a job to tackle at home.

When something gets out of wack, and it is hard to determine what got out first, one can only look at what is reusable and what is not. In our case, the pinion and ring gear have some wear but not in the area where the gears mesh. So, instead of buying $500 worth of gears, we are going to polish out the chips, replace the spider gears and the carrier, and use a new shaft. The original GT6 housing will be used and we will install new seals and bearings.

To be honest, I do not always install new bearings having seen new bearing that had more slop in them than the ones being replaced. And I have seen more and more new bearing with fewer balls and more space between them in the races. If the original bearing spins freely and quietly and have no visual pitting, I re-use them.

After we polish the gears, I will begin setting the clearances and tolerances. They are the utmost importance and must be done correctly. Actually, I can tell a lot by feel of hand. I can tell when the pinion bearings are preloaded correctly by feel. I can tell when the backlash is just right by wiggling the gears. The clearances will be checked by gauges but first I test them by hand.

Well that customer just showed up and the internet is still intermittent so I will end for now.

It is another day now and the internet is working. That customer showed up with parts for the GT6 differential on that “good gone bad” Friday. One of those items was the new cross shaft the spider gears rotate on. It is a very hard part to get. All the good suppliers were out; most said NLA (no longer available) or NLS (no longer supplied) and only one had it, Victoria British. The $8 part cost $7 to ship. It is less than 3/4” in diameter and about 4” long; $7 to ship!

The shaft looked like it had been sitting outside for a few years; it was rusty. This was not a big problem, I was able to chuck it in the lathe and polish off the rust. This short shaft was a centerless piece. This means there were no centering indents on either end. It was probably cut from a longer piece of stock. This makes it hard to chuck and clean both ends at the same time. You chuck one end then turn it around and do the other.

After cleaning it, we tried to fit the gears to it. No, not even close. The shaft measured .008” to big in diameter. Not such a cheap part now is it? So, back to the lathe. The shaft is hardened so I knew it would be difficult to cut on the lathe. You really need to grind it but I do not have the set up for that. Would you believe the shaft was bent, just a little. I

adjusted it in the lathe several times and checked and it was not the way it was mounted; it was actually bent.

What did we have to loose? I began turning taking very small cuts until one end fit the gears. Then I turned it around to cut the other end. This is not the best way to do this type of work. We finally got both ends to fit the gears after 1 1/2 hours effort. Then we wanted to re-harden the outer surface. This is a pretty cool process and a very old technique. Take your handy oxy-acetylene torch, get the part red hot and slip it into used motor oil. Do this outside as the smoke and smell are not something you want your better half noticing. The shaft came out black because carbon atoms had bonded them selves to the surface making it harder. Our shaft is exactly what we got, the shaft. It seems like it will now work but the once cheap shaft got more expensive.

So, a good Friday turned sour real quick. At least I took off early and my cooking turned out some delicious food. At least I think so. Work will continue on the Spitfire dash and wiring harness and the GT6 Herald and I will keep you updated on the progress. If yall have any questions or comments, email or call and I will be happy to discuss it with you. Until then, see yall somewhere soon.

FOR SALE: 1978 Spifire

Probably 10-years ago, I purchased a 1978 Triumph Spitfire from someone in California and had it shipped to me here in Lawrenceville, where I was living at the time.  The car was a project car with no rust.  The front suspension was in the process of being rebuilt, so it wasn’t rolling.  He indicated the engine ran about a year prior to my purchased, but he hadn’t started it since – I’m sorry (and embarrassed) to say, I haven’t either.  The car has been garage-kept

and is sitting in the same condition it was when I purchased it, as life got in the way of my tinkering with it.  I’m now in Bethlehem and have finally resolved myself to the fact I’m not going to be doing anything with it and would like to offer it up for sale to the club, before posting it online somewhere.

As I mentioned, it’s a 1978 Triumph Spitfire from California.  It has no rust – not even the floor pans.  It comes with all the parts I received when it was shipped out here, including a hard top.  It is a project waiting for someone who will have the time and resources to devote to it.  My asking price is $1500.00 and I “may” even be able to deliver it in the metro Atlanta area.  If anyone is interested, I’m willing for them to swing by the house to give it a once over.  I’m in Bethlehem now, just off GA 316 about half way between I-85 and Athens.

The easiest way to reach me is via cell at 404.906.6800.   Mark Cohen

FOR SALE: 1974 MGB GT & 1964 Spitfire Barn Finds   Let’s start with the 1974 MGBGT. It has been in the barn for 35 years I last drove it in 1984. It has 64kl miles on it. The title is clean and in my name. I would like to get $3500. for it. Next is the 64 Triumph Spitfire. I got this from a friend of mine 25 or so years ago. He told me that the engine had been balanced and blue printed. I know that back in the day we rode around together and it was hot. I do not have a title. It would be nice to get $800.00 for it. These cars are in Marshall NC. Feel free to contact me.

Want to Buy: Triumph GT6

I am interested in purchasing a Triumph GT6. I don’t have any pictures but just wanted to throw it out to the community to see if anyone was looking to sell. I’m honestly interested in any year/model but primarily looking for something in good condition that runs but just may need a little TLC to get it to be a really good looking and running GT6. I’m not looking for any rust bucket or major project car. Feel free to add my email in the contact section as well as my cell 404-819-8002. If you have any other questions for me or need any more details, feel free to reach out anytime.
