Thank you for the wonderful evening of Fun, Fitness, Laughter and Tears and the past eleven years that were the best of my life. I won’t say Good-bye, just “So Long.” Hello Everyone! It's hard for me to believe that 2 years have come and gone since I started as PTA President in 2009. During that time we have had many successful events including: Book Fairs, author visits, assemblies, Halloween parties, family dance nights, plant sales, family breakfasts, talent showcases, staff appreciation lunches, family fitness nights, recess and after-school clubs, various fund-raising events, and more. I am overwhelmed at how much we were able to accomplish through the hard work and dedication of our GWPTA board members, volunteer parents, teachers, and staff. We couldn't have done it without you. Please accept my sincere thanks for all that each of you did to make the last 2 years so successful. Thanks, too, for the opportunity to serve as your PTA President. As the hectic schedule of all the events and things to do fades away, I am left with an overwhelming feeling of happiness for having had the opportunity to meet and spend time with you and your children. Working with the children at GW is an amazingly rewarding experience that I will always treasure. I encourage each of you to find a way to get involved through PTA, class parents, clubs, activities, or attendance at events. Parental involvement in school is both personally rewarding and, according to many studies, the single most important factor in student success. I wish you and your families a happy, healthy, and fun-filled summer.

Éste año se agregó “Take a Last Lap with Dr. Klemm”.

No voy a decir adios si no “Hasta siempre”

Twenty Five 5th grade chorus members represented George Washington Elementary School at the White Plains All City Choral Festival. The concert was held at the high school this spring. They performed with chorus members from the other four elementary schools to create the All City Elementary Chorus for 2011. The audience also enjoyed the students’ singing during a world premier choral piece performed with the middle school and high school students. We are very proud of their talent and effort that created this special event.

White Plains All City Chorus Free RiceBy Kelly Marx and Megan Harnaga If you’re bored, why not go online and help people in need? They will be treated to a nice bowl of rice. This is an educational website that features art, English, chemistry, geography, language learning and math – www.freerice.com This is how it works: you are given a word problem or a question and you pick an answer. It will tell you if you got it right or wrong. If you get it wrong you get an easier question and if you get it right you’ll get a harder one. For every question you get right, the Worlds Food Programme donates 10 grains of rice to hungry people worldwide. After you reach 100 (only 10 questions) you’ve given one needy person a bowl of rice. Even adults can participate. It has levels 1 – 60 for all ages. This rice makes a huge difference for those who get it. It is great to do because it makes you feel happy to give people food when they need it. You don’t even need to buy anything – just play the game. If you want to help, just go on the com-puter to www.freerice.com and explore. One problem is – you may get smarter and start doing better in school – only kidding. Try your best and help needy people around the world.

GWPTA Update

Keep Kids Reading All Summer Long Research shows that if kids continue to read during the summer they don’t lose any of their skills. Here are some librarians’ tips that really work to make sure your kids have a fun summer vacation but don’t take a vacation from reading. Full of Summer Reading Fun: Visit your local public library because there is so much going on there. Many libraries do wonderful summer reading programs for all ages. Show Kids That Reading is Important to You: It cannot be emphasized enough that children who observe their parents reading become readers themselves. Make sure there are plenty of reading materials scattered throughout the house – not just

novels, but magazines and newspapers as well. Also, make reading a family activity. When everyone gathers together at the end of a busy summer day, read a book aloud. It’s a great way to unwind. Make Reading a Way to Connect: Some children respond better when they know other children are going to read and respond to a book, which is why book discussion groups are great. Parents should read what their children read at all ages so they can really connect with their child and be able to answer questions and instigate discussions.Set Reading Times and Find the Fun in Books: Make a golden rule to set time to read over the summer – parents should designate an hour a

day just for books, or set aside a time once a week to go to the library. It’s important to schedule time just for reading. Have kids keep a reading journal – even if it’s just the book titles. Once the journal gets filled up, there’s a real sense of accomplishment that’s very rewarding. Take Reading on the Road: When preparing for family road trips, stock up on audio books from your library. Let your children choose some stories to listen to in the car. Have family members share favorite ghost stories and/or adventurestories around the campfire at picnics and on camping trips.

Family Fitness & Fun:Last Lap with Dr. Klemm

On Friday, May 13 several hundred came out to honor and pay tribute to our amazing Principal, Dr. Terri Klemm. Dr. Klemm is retiring after 11 years of dedicated service to our children, our school community, and our extended GW Family. We are grateful for the time she shared with us, all of her contributions to GW, and her presence as a magnificent role model to all. We wish her and her family all the best on their new adventure. When I start to feel sad about her leaving, I remind myself of a quote attributed to Dr. Seuss: Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened.
