President’s Message
It was with some discussion that the Board decided not to have a member meeting in May.
We feel it is important to get together once a month. However, many of you have shared
your May was crazy busy, like ours. Between graduations, birthday parties, vacation,
children and grandchildren end-of-season sporting events, gardening in between rains,
Memorial Day, it would have been hard for many of us to squeeze in one more event. We
certainly hope that June is more relaxing.
Looking so forward to seeing all of you at car shows, cruise-ins, and Mid-America Offi-
cial Monthly Events.

MID-AMERICA MEMBER MEETING—JULY
Where: Your Classic Ride
2711 Warwick Trfy.
Kansas City, MO 64108
When: MEETING DATE WILL BE SENT BY EMAIL
A very special “Thank you” to Tom Strongman for his excellent presentation at our Member Meeting Saturday, June 6th. Everyone really enjoyed it.
His presentation was on the "Goodwood Festival
of Speed held at the privately owned grounds of
Lord March in West Sussex, England. It is
opened to vintage race cars, some valued at mil-
lions of dollars. It is a three day event with spec-
tators capped at 150,000, most of which are in
period dress. Tom's presentation of still pictures
were taken with his father's camera, used when
he was also a reporter. The action events cap-
tured several accidents and were also in
black and white. It was an amazing review.

Members and Their Cars
Tom and JoAnn Wedbush
Meet Tom and JoAnn
Originally from St. Louis.
Moved to Lenexa in 1974.
I started my own company in 1978 selling and distributing
industrial control products. We sold the distribution com-
pany in 2018.
My wife JoAnn and I were married in 2005.
We have 6 children between us plus 3 “Fur Ball Dogs.”
The Cars
My first car was a 1949 Ford that I paid $100.00. It was a
2-door with a stick to keep the front seat from falling into
the back seat. The finish was gray primer with a V8 flathead with a stick shift. I had never
driven a stick shift until I bought the car. It ran OK for about a year when the clutch went out.
Sold it to a junk yard for $25.00.
My next car was a 1950 Mercury, which actually had paint on it. It was blue with some pinstripe
flames on the side. I drove it into the ground.
In 1960 I bought a used ’57 Chevy. It was black with a fuel injection block, but only a 4-barrel
vs the injection unit. I was stopped by the police 15 minutes after I took it off the lot for speed-
ing. It was probably the only time I was given a warning.
I had it painted blue plus the interior rolled and pleated. I used to drag race it at Alton Speedway
in Alton IL. I put a lot of wear and tear on the old gal. I eventually traded it in for a 1960
Pontiac, but always wished I had kept the ‘57.
5
The ’57 Bel Air I currently own, was purchased
in 1999. When I first walked into the garage to
see it, I was blown away. It was almost the
same color as the one I owned in St. Louis.
I drove it home and discovered the tires were
dry rot with 2 flats the next day. Put on new
tires and had a dual exhaust installed, with glass
packs of course. Shortly after that I heard the
rods knocking so…..I had a 350 cubic inch mo-
tor installed with a 4-barrel.
Over the years I have re-chromed most of the parts,
had a 750HR tranny put in and installed a Dakota
digital dash assembly. It has standard brakes and no
power steering. (Wish I had that feature). I plan on
putting disc brakes on the front someday.
We are looking forward to participating in the club functions and meeting everyone. It is nice to
join a club that is active with purpose.

On behalf of th Mid-America AACA Chapter under the Lawrence Region, we would like to thank the
Lawrence Region for the $250 donation for our help at the swap meet. We appreciate your support!
Thank you Jack Boyle. We now have a web site. Please go to www.midamerica.com to view our new
web site. It is so easy to navigate and very professional. We need a person who will be the club Web
Coordinator. This involves updating our meeting date, uploading The Generator each month, adding/
deleting pictures. It isn’t a difficult task and won’t take much time. Jack will go over the process for the
site and will be available to answer any questions. PLEASE HELP! Contact Jack at jack-
[email protected] or call 913-544-4650.

Gary Crispin attended a car show on April 20th put on by the North Kansas City School District to raise
money for students to go to the Specialty Equipment Management Association (SEMA) Show in Las
Vegas. The SEMA Show is the world’s leading automotive trade event. Every part of the automotive
industry is there—hot rods and off roads, mobile electronics, collision repair. Participants attend educa-
tional seminars and networking. It was a great car show and a worthy cause. Great for auto tech stu-
dents. Gary would like to see our club attend this show next year. Sounds like our kind of event!

“Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night shall stay these couriers from their appointed
rounds." So says the de facto motto of the US Postal Service. So, too, go the stalwart members of
the Lawrence and Mid-America AACA clubs.
For the 2nd year, (May 3rd & 4th) Mid-America AACA manned (and
womanned!) the public parking gate of the Lawrence Swap Meet. Last
year we were sweating in t-shirts. But this, the 56th year, shall be forever
remembered as the Lawrence SWAMP Meet. It had rained just a bit in
the (many) days preceeding the meet. Even the high spots of the Douglas
County Fairground were slippery. Over the hill, nearly a lost cause. It's a
bad omen when Lawrence had two tractors waiting to pull folks through
the mire. Near the front gate a 2 1/2 ton cargo trucked parked on level
ground, yet had no traction to leave. Nor was the Lawrence club tractor
able to move him.
Enter the invincible Gary Crispin and his faithful 4x4--problem solved
And we didn't think to get a picture!
As always, a few slow minutes quickly gave way to another torrent, this time of
cars, with most being processed through (in roughly 20 seconds) to the waiting
4H clubs, who tried to find a place to park them. When parking and swimming
areas both filled up, we sent many to the southeast vendors gate, where the
Lawrence club tried to squeeze out spaces along the interior streets. Still,
dampened spirits remained high, and cars somehow got parked.
Among the faithful who worked the gate: Michael Frederico, Gary Crispin,
Neil & Debbie Steiner, Bill & Bonnie Johnson, Jerry & Sharon Cygan, Roscoe
Yoder, Tom Norman, Jack & Penny Boyle, Jon & Martie Kernodle and Dan
Cary (a welcome loaner from Lawrence). Endless thanks to all! Thus far, no
reported cases of pneumonia nor trenchfoot, for which we are grateful. Wet,
slimy, muddy--and still lots of fun. The Post Office got nuthin' on us!

Annual Car Show
When you attend a car show in mid-May, you expect mild temperatures and clear skies. That was not so
in El Dorado Springs on Saturday, May 11. Six die-heart members: Sharon & Jerry Cygan, Martie & Jon
Kernodle (and their little dog KC) and Bonnie & Bill Johnson headed south on Friday.
The C&H Motel, dubbed the Sugar Shack by Bill, is what you can expect of a throw back to a 1950’s
Route 66 style motel. We made the most of Friday evening by gathering at the gazebo and sharing old
stories. Dinner was at the El Dorado Mexican Restaurant and Cantina. Next time you are in the area, we
highly recommend this spot for lunch or dinner.
Saturday morning we woke to rain, not a gentle sprinkling, but RAIN! The
temperature stayed around the upper 40s,. At 8 am we headed to the cent-
town center for the car show. We wiped down our cars several times that
day.
Martie and Jon didn’t bring a car as their truck had an engine problem and
so trailering a car was out of the question. Martie was particularly dis-
appointed as she wanted to take Lucy (1960 Metropolitan), last year’s
“Best of Show” winner, and display her with this year’s show t-shirt,
picturing Lucy.

9
Attendance was less than us The 54 Cruisers Club were expecting. However, the cars that showed were
top quality cars. We are pleased to congratulate:
Jerry & Sharon Cygan’s 1956 T-Bird for a first place in Original Class 1949-1961
Bill & Bonnie Johnson borrowed their son, Danny’s, 1968 Mustang for a third
place in the Original Class 1962-1972 Jerry Cygan won the 50/50 drawing.
Mid-America AACA members, Linda and Dennis Radford (who hosted the show) and Jim & Ally
Edwards and Jerry Rau, were on the working staff for The 54 Cruisers.
We drove home without rain and incident. Even the weather couldn’t keep us from having a really good
time.
