The 2016 Geauga County Department on Aging Senior of the Year is Carol Johnson Carol Johnson was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. She was a graduate of Washington County High School, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Alabama State. In 1972, Carol made the move from Alabama to Cleveland, where she resided until 1977. She then moved to North Randall, and finally settled her roots in Chagrin Falls in 1984. Carol was a member with the Avon Avenue Baptist Church in Cleveland from 1984 until 1992, at which time she became involved with Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Since then, she has been a dedicated delegate. She served as a church nurse for over 10 years until health concerns and multiple surgeries kept her from the position. However, she still remains an active member of Zion Hill, whether it’s serving in the kitchen, teaching vacation Bible school, assisting other teachers, or floating around and supporting whoever may need her help. Her previous work experience includes working in a chemical lab, acting as a manager for the photo department in Rite Aid, as an assistant administrator to the payroll clerk at Satellite Corporate Office, and as a pharmaceutical technician. Carol’s helping nature doesn’t end in church. From 1984-1986, she served on the Board of Fair Housing in Geauga County. She then took part on the Board of Habitat for Humanity, as well as the Board of Chagrin Falls Park Community Center from 1986-1994. It was then that she became a foster parent. For 22 years, Carol took 15 children under her wing and provided them with the love and comfort that they needed and deserved. During that time, she also acted as a foster grandparent for 5 years through the Chagrin Falls Park Community Center after- school tutoring program. After retiring, she joined the Chagrin Falls Senior Center back in 2008, and continues to be an active member. Carol is the proud mother of three children, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. LOOK TO THE SKIES:SEPTEMBER 1 – Annular Solar Eclipse (Africa)Also known as the “Ring of Fire,” an annular solar eclipse issimilar to a total eclipse, except that the Moon is farther away fromthe Earth, so it’s not large enough to completely cover the Sun.Observers in certain parts of Africa including Congo andMadagascar will be treated to this unique celestial phenomenon. Ifyou won’t be there yourself, check the web for photos of the eventafterward!

SEPTEMBER 3 – Neptune at OppositionViewing the blue giant Neptune can be tricky, so if this planet’sbeen on your wish list, make tonight the night you finally observeit. Even though it’s closer on this night than any other night of theyear, the planet is still approximately 2.7 billion miles away, so itwill appear as a tiny blue dot in most telescopes.

September 16 – Penumbral Lunar Eclipse (Eastern Europe,Eastern Africa, Asia, Australia)This is the second penumbral eclipse of the year, but will treat adifferent region of the globe to a similar show. Sky-watchers in theAmericas will miss out on this one, but it will be visible throughoutmuch of the rest of the world including eastern Europe, easternAfrica, Asia, and western Australia.

Beating the FluBefore you know it, fall will be upon us and, with it, the cold and fluseason. Health professionals have recognized for many years thatpeople 65 years and older are at greater risk of seriouscomplications from the flu. While flu seasons can vary in severity, people 65 years and older suffer the greatest number of severe fludiseases during most seasons. There is no “cure” for viruses thatcause respiratory illnesses, so it’s wise to avoid infection in the firstplace.ACTIONS TO TAKE THIS FLU SEASON:* Get your flu shot – the best way to prevent the flu is with a flu

vaccine.

* Practice good health habits including covering coughs, washing hands often and avoiding people who are sick

* Seek medical advice quickly if you develop flu symptoms to see if you need medical evaluation or treatment with antiviral drugs.Flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy

nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people may also experience vomiting and diarrhea.

Please join UH Geauga Medical Center’s RN nurse educator whenshe presents a free program “The Flu and You.” at your localsenior center. Please check the center’s calendar for dates andtimes. To learn more about services or classes and events, visitUHGeauga.org or call 440-285-7757
