supporting enterprises and communities

The term ‘social enterprise’ is widely used to describe enterprising third sector organisations but what does it actuallymean? To answer this, reference will be made to the wide diversity of social enterprise organisations currently operatingin Scotland and the UK, the range of services and activities provided by these organisations, and how socialenterprises develop their income generation potential.

This half day course will also introduce the range of legal structures currently available for the Third Sector and howthese structures relate to social enterprises, including the traditional ones of Company Limited by Guarantee andDevelopment Trusts, and the newer Community Interest Company (CIC), and Scottish Charitable IncorporatedOrganisation (SCIO) structures. The course will also cover issues around Charitable Status, setting up a tradingsubsidiary, what is a Trustee, and roles and responsibilities for Directors. Where appropriate, references will be madeabout the social business reasons influencing such structural developments.

If you want to stay open, setting a good price for your services is absolutely crucial. Too low and you’ll go bust. Toohigh and your competitors will get all the business. This short course looks at the main elements that go into setting aprice that will be acceptable to your clients and at the same time keep you in business. We look at different pricingmodels - should you charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a variable project fee? Also, how do you decide your perceivedvalue to your customer – ie, how much they are willing to pay? And how can you be more aware of what competitorsare charging for similar services in the marketplace?

It is recommended that you first attend Costing Your Services (see above).

Budgeting effectively is one of the cornerstones of any well-managed organisation. This practical and participative oneday course is specifically designed to identify all the issues you need to consider when constructing an annual budgetfor your organisation.

A budget generally is made up of 2 separate components – Income and Expenditure and Cash Flow. This coursedemonstrates how they differ and highlights the importance of good cash management. Funding applications are in-creasingly more demanding with respect to the amount of financial information required to support applications. Thelatter part of the day demonstrates how to adapt your budget and periodic accounts in order to reflect the effects a suc-cessful funding application has on your business in order to clearly show the benefits of the award.

ILM Mainstreaming EqualitiesOrganisational Development Programme

This Institute of Leadership and Management endorsed training course is specifically designed forThird Sector organisations. The course is jointly hosted by GCVS and CRER, and takes place over four dates atthe Albany Learning and Conference Centre in Glasgow.

Monday 11 August 2014Monday 15 September 2014Monday 6 October 2014Tuesday 4 November 2014All sessions from 10.00am – 4.00pm.

• Build capacity to embed equality in everything your organisation does• Understand legal obligations under the Equality Act 2010• Share equalities knowledge and experience with Voluntary Sector colleagues• Practical actions to meet the developing equality requirements of Public Sector funders• Includes access to extensive training materials and resources

Subjects include:• Key equality concepts • The Equality Act 2010• Equality in employment, volunteering and procurement • Consultation, involvement and engagement• Equality Impact Assessment and planning for equality • Case studies based on EmploymentTribunal case law • Practical tips for embedding mainstreaming

and avoiding conflict

The training course itself is free of charge for workers or board members from Third Sector organisations. It is possibleto take the course without receiving ILM certification. For those wishing to gain an ILM certificate, there are alimited number of subsidised places available and the remaining participants will be charged the basic costsrequired to process ILM certification.Course participants should have the authority within their organisation to make positive changes and the ability toeffectively share the knowledge they gain from participation. Participants should therefore ideally be at a senior levelwithin the organisation. However, we recognise the difficulty of time management within organisations and so anyperson can attend on behalf of their organisation provided they have the delegated authority to take action tomainstream equality.

It is suggested that two people from each organisation attend if possible; this provides more support within the organi-sation and minimises any disruption as a result of unavoidable absence. For all participants, we strongly recommendattendance at all four days. Although handouts and materials will be available, these do not replace the experience ofparticipating in learning and sharing knowledge with others.

The training course has a strong focus on the organisation taking action itself. This means that participants will be re-quired to do some work in between sessions as well as prior to the start of the course. This work will include sharingknowledge with others in the organisation and looking at the organisation’s policies, services and functions. The finalassessed piece of coursework is an essay which will explore a selection of the topics covered during the training. Thisis required for participants wishing to receive an ILM completion certificate.
