The heart of Horsebridge hamlet will

come alive once more on the Easter

weekend, when new lessee, Toni

Simmonds, opens the doors of the John

O‘Gaunt Inn to welcome back drinkers

and diners to this much missed

hostelry! From Saturday, 7th April,

locals will have the opportunity to

become reacquainted with the

excellent beers that were a hallmark of

the JOG and to be introduced to the

excellent cuisine of new chef, Lee

McDowell from Stockbridge. Toni

has treated the pub to new décor,

which includes stone tile flooring,

ambient lighting, illustrations of local

history and ‗Jack‘s Corner‘ in

recognition of local nonagenarian, Jack

Knight.

To celebrate the relaunch, Toni will

be hosting a ‗Grand Opening‘ on the

evening of Friday 13th April from

7.00pm onwards. A free buffet will

give locals the opportunity to sample

Lee‘s cuisine. Each guest will also

receive a complimentary glass of

wine. There are many other events

planned for the night.

Toni Simmonds is a familiar face

around our community. She has

lived in Houghton for some years

from where she ran her own

successful business. With

experience in the licensed trade,

Toni will bring to the JOG her own

flair for entertaining and a portfolio

of ideas including music nights and

themed evenings.

Digital switchover - be prepared You have probably heard a lot about this already, but there are two dates that

you really need to be aware of. (If you receive your TV service by satellite you

don‘t need to do anything.) The rest of us will almost certainly be receiving our

service from the Rowridge transmitter or its Salisbury relay station, so:

Despite toe-freezing temperatures of

minus 5°C, the pre-school cake sale on

the 4th February saw a steady stream

of customers who had braved the sub-

zero conditions to come and buy the

delicious cakes on offer, raising £75 in

the process. A big thank you to those

who donated cakes for us to sell, to the

brave mums who manned the stall and

to The Crown for allowing us to use

their car park.

The Somborne & District Society and

The Sombornes‘ Pre-School are proud

to be working together to organise a

special event to celebrate the Queen‘s

Diamond Jubilee at the recreation

ground and Village Hall on Saturday

2nd June.

This is an event for the whole village

to enjoy and take part in: there will be

stalls and sideshows, competitions and

possibly cricket!

We ask all organisations, individuals

and family groups if they will

contribute by organising a sales table

or stall: be it teas and coffees, ice

creams, books, toys or lucky dip. The

more variety we have, the better. We‘d

also welcome any street entertainers to

add to the atmosphere.

As well as the stalls, there will be a

free-to-enter ‗Make a Jubilee Crown‘

competition with prizes for children

and adults. So dust off your glue-

sticks and get creating!

This will be a Jubilee celebration to

remember, so let‘s have lots of fun and

show the rest of the Test Valley what

King‘s Somborne can do.

If you have any queries or offers,

please contact either Samantha Boot,

on behalf of The Sombornes Pre-

School (389554), or Mary Pollock, on

behalf of The Somborne & District

Society (388422).

The work on the Hall has been held

back slightly due to the recent very

cold weather but generally it is

progressing very well. The main store

which is being turned into the new

community room has now had the

dividing wall taken down and a heavy

steel beam will be going up in the next

few days to support the roof timbers.

A smaller steel beam has already been

put up beneath the outside canopy and

this has enabled one of the outside

steel pillars to be removed which will

eventually produce a much better vista

from the new community room. The

two adjacent pillars have been encased

in brickwork and are now much more

attractive.

The two new store rooms now have the

roofing felt in place and as a result the

pre-school and football club have been

able to move a lot of their equipment

into the smaller store. The larger store

has just had the cement floor installed

and work on the ceilings and tiling will

follow shortly.

Electrical work will begin this week in

the community room and we expect

the new French windows will be

inserted at the end of the week.

I realize that the building work has

caused some disruption, particularly as

the Hall is in constant use in

preparation for the pantomime, but Ian

and Lee our builders have tried very

hard to keep the dust, noise and

disruption to the minimum. Thanks to

everybody for their patience and I am

sure you will appreciate the end result!

We have discussed a name for the new

community room and the idea that we

should name it the ‗Jubilee Room‘

seems to be very acceptable and

hopefully this will be confirmed by the

VHMC this week. If all goes well we

should be able to have a formal

opening ceremony during the Jubilee

weekend. In this context, several

organizations are getting together to

arrange a special celebration some

time during the Jubilee weekend. If

you or your group would like to be

involved, please contact either

the pre-school, the Somborne

Society, the WI or the Parish

Clerk. It would seem to be

sensible to co-ordinate

activities so that we avoid

events clashing. Contact

addresses are in The Gauntlet

but if all else fails do let me

know (Terry Mackintosh

furnishing of the Jubilee Room. This

is probably going to cost in the region

of £6,000 and we will obviously be

seeking grants, but if you would like to

make a donation please let our

Treasurer, Michael Templeman, know.

We are also having initial discussions

on the next phase of refurbishment

which will entail a considerable

amount of work on the main hall.

Obviously these discussions are at a

very early stage and we have not yet

raised the money but the team has

achieved an amazing amount so far

and I am very confident that we can

eventually have a hall of which

everybody will be proud.

Finally some dates for your diary. The

Somborne Sessions are proving to be

extremely popular and the next artiste

will be Richard Digance on 29th

March. The Clay Pigeon Shoot will be

held on 11th May and the Beer and

Music Festival will be on 23rd June.

Stockbridge site has vast amounts of

information about the area and links

to everything you can imagine. Run

on behalf of the Parish Council, it is

sponsored by local businesses. You

can advertise items for sale on it, at

modest rates. So, take a look - if you

have time - you could end following

the links to interesting information for

quite a while!

As a lead Parish Councillor for sports,

I am seeking support for the

establishment of a table tennis club

for parishioners of all ages. If enough

is forthcoming, it will be possible to

proceed to bid for funds to purchase

tables and nets and to seek a suitable

venue. The viability of a club will

depend upon the willingness of a

number of adults to offer assistance in

supervising the activity.

Would those of you who are

interested please go to the website

and register the interest of yourself

and family members separately on the

appropriate link on the home page, so

that the total number of interested

persons is recorded.

I have already made an informal

The Somborne

and District Society Members enjoyed two very successful

social events over the Christmas

period, namely the Christmas Dinner

and New Year‘s Lunch.

The Society‘s first talk of 2012 took

members back to the life of a farmer‘s

wife in the 18th century with Ruth

Facer‘s talk, „Mary Bacon‟s World: A

Farmer‟s Wife in 18th Century

Hampshire.‟ Mary Bacon, born in

1743, married a farmer in 1765 and

subsequently had six children. She

and her husband farmed in Cliddesden

for twenty six years. They then moved

to Aylesford Farm near Alton, renting

arable, sheep-farming and hop-

growing land of approximately 165

acres. Ruth‘s talk came out of

research for a biographical study of

fiction from 1772 to 1800. This

research unearthed a document „Mary

Bacon‟s list of books‟. This ledger

listed over 50 books on such diverse

subjects as farming accounts, recipes,

conduct for middle class thrifty

housewives, cures for humans and

animals, almanac material, bible

stories, religion and a detailed

inventory of everything in the house.

The talk was interspersed with

readings on diverse topics and written

in various styles and genres and at

different points in time. These painted

a vivid picture of life at the time and

the behaviour and life style expected,

almost demanded, not only of farmers‘

wives but also of children and

employers. An interesting fact to

emerge was that the ledger listed no

works of fiction. Did Mary Bacon

read no fiction or did she borrow rather

than buy books in this genre? It is

clear from the books listed that Mary

Bacon was a deeply religious woman

of diverse interests extending beyond

the potentially narrow confines of life

as a farmer‘s wife at that time.

A few months ago the club reached its

centenary and this will be celebrated

on the 12th March, but the story of

how it was founded is both interesting

and surprising.

The club‘s origins lie in the village

reading room founded by the vicar, the

Revd John Creighton, in 1898, in the

parish rooms in the grounds of the Old

Vicarage. Daily newspapers and

weekly or monthly magazines were

provided and villagers were able to

keep up with world affairs.

In 1901, this reading room was

extended and provided with a billiards

table. This gave rise to the formation

of a Billiards Club whose membership

was restricted to men only over the age

of 16.

The popularity of the club prompted

the vicar to use it as an instrument of

the Church in caring for the spiritual

needs of the men in the parish.

The ―Guild for Men‖ or ―Men‘s Club‖

as it became known, formed a

committee which met each Sunday

afternoon. The club was open every

winter evening, except Sundays.

The popularity of the club increased

rapidly and more space was needed, so

it moved from the parish room to the

bottom of Cow Drove Hill into empty

cottages owned by Mr Usborne.

In 1909, the committee felt that the

club should have its own building

which Major Hennessy of Compton

Manor offered to fund. Mrs Vaudrey

Barker-Mill of Mottisfont offered part

of her estate in ―St. Austin‘s Cross

Road‖ for a site, and Major

Hemmingway arranged for drawings

to be prepared. Construction work

started in March 1911 and the club was

opened on November 2nd 1911 by Mrs

Hennessy.

The opening ceremony was a grand

affair which included singing,

recitations, many speeches, a

cinematograph show and a billiards

tournament.

The committee decided to rename the

club ―The King‘s Somborne Working

Men‘s Club‖. A new constitution

banned gambling, swearing and

spitting. Alcohol was not allowed.

Seventy-eight act ive members

enrolled, each paying 4/- (20p) per

winter season.

The club now celebrates its centenary.

Thousands of working men‘s clubs

were built, but few remain today.

England‘s oldest, founded in 1861

closed in 2008 with debts of £26,000.

It was one of 400 which closed in that

year alone. Ours is a survivor and well

worth our continued support.

Sombornes Neighbourhood Watch We were sadly unable to provide an

article in last month‘s edition of The

Gauntlet - the reason being that we

simply had no news! Indeed, for this

month‘s article there were just 3

incidents, all thefts. Two were

valuables left in motor vehicles and

one was theft of a purse in King‘s

Somborne church.

One of the challenges we have is to

improve the knowledge of trend

information in the surrounding area to

help keep you aware of potential crime

threats. To assist in this quest, we now

receive the weekly Northern Country

Watch bulletin which you can view on

the Neighbourhood Watch (NHW)

pages of the Sombornes website

(www.thesombornes.org.uk). We also

receive the Romsey

Rural policing report

which is also

available on our

website and we are

working hard to get

similar data from the

Andover Rural area.

Crime prevention tips

are also available and we‘ll be

featuring these in future articles in The

Gauntlet.

In the meantime, actual crime for our

area can be seen on the Crime Reports

webpage which can be accessed from

the Links section of the NHW pages

on the Sombornes website.

Current Key Crime Trends Diesel and Heating Oil theft

continues to be a significant concern in

the area, as are scrap metal thefts and

the associated

sightings of

vans and

pick-up

trucks in out

of the way

places. As

shown above,

theft from

vehicles remains an issue – so

remember NOT to leave valuables on

display.

As always check the Sombornes

website for up-to-date information or

better still subscribe – and be notified

automatically.

I am amazed at the wealth of help

there is on offer to support older

people in the community. Much of it

is free. As we age, we all find physical

things getting a little trickier and we

tend to worry more.

At the end of this month we are

holding our third talk in the Epworth

Hall. We are holding these talks on

the last Tuesday morning of each

month, so you can get your diaries

booked now!

T hi s mo n t h t h e Co mmu n i t y

Innovations Team will let you know

about the huge range of services they

have on offer or can put you in touch

with. It really is as easy as picking up

the phone! Come along to this talk—

you may think you don‘t need

anything now, but what they have to

say may ring a few bells with you or

give you some

i d e a s t o

squirrel away

for the future.

Forewarned is

forearmed!

Remember also that we are here to

help with any other queries you may

have about services or benefits for the

over 50s, and we will do fire safety

checks. Do not sit at home worrying

–however small you may feel the

problem is, pick up the phone and ask,

you have nothing to lose, and may

have much to gain!

There will be a few changes to the

event this year. Firstly, it will run over

two days – starting on Friday 22nd

June with Somborne Sessions hosting

a visit by legendary US blues band

Delta Moon (in the Village Hall).

Carrying the listener deep into the

heart of the American South, the dual

slide guitars of Delta Moon‘s front

men Tom Gray and Mark Johnson will

set the scene nicely for a great

weekend of live music. Tickets for

this will be £10 in advance (£12 on the

night). The Crown will be running an

extended bar with a selection of real

ales.

Then on Saturday 23rd June, we start

the festival proper at 3.00pm with live

music on the field from new local

sensation Rory and Friends, along

with two popular acts back from last

year - Miles Apart and The Badgers.

There will be a hog roast, BBQ, baked

potatoes and cakes, teas and coffees

along with a range of arts and craft

stalls, children‘s entertainment and of

course our selection of Hampshire real

ales. At 7.00pm we are moving inside

the hall for an evening session with

Black Pig, Ben Goddard and Ken

Wood and the Mixers. This is partly

so we can be sure the weather will not

spoil your enjoyment of the evening

entertainment but also so we can better

control any issues with underage/

excessive drinking.

Tickets for the whole day (from

3.00pm in the afternoon through to

11.00pm in

the evening)

are £10

w i t h a

reduced rate

of £5 for the

a f t e r n o o n

s e s s i o n

only. For this you will get a

programme and festival glass, which

you will need to get served at the bar.

You are most welcome to bring your

own food, drink and picnics onto the

site but we would ask that anyone

drinking alcohol purchases a ticket and

obtains a plastic glass from us. We

also have a special festival offer in

place with means you can get a combo

ticket for both Delta Moon on the

Friday and an all day/evening ticket

for Saturday for just £15 – a saving of

£5. This year for the first time, all

tickets are available in advance from

www.sombornesessions.co.uk or

01794 389192.

We appreciate that this costs more than

last year. Unfortunately this is

inevitable due to the increased costs

we are facing staging the event this

year in terms of both higher first aid

cover and also having to provide a

basic security presence to deter any

misbehaviour/excessive drinking. We

think this remains a very reasonable

price to pay for a full day‘s

entertainment by some great acts

accompanied by a fantastic range of

local ales and hope you will agree!

“Hold a Fish and Chip Supper

to help spinal cord injured

people live full and

independent lives.”

Want to do something different?

Want to raise money where you live

or work? Want to eat Fish and Chips,

while raising money for charity? Hold

a fish and chip supper on Friday 18th

May 2012 whilst raising awareness of

spinal cord injury and supporting

SIA‘s information and support

services.

You can hold a fish and chip supper in

your own home, at work or hold a

larger supper at your local community

centre.

SIA will provide a fundraising pack

containing hints and tips, recipes,

invitations and donation envelopes.

By inviting 7 friends and asking them

to donate an additional £5.00, you will

raise at least £35.00 from your supper

but we will also give you additional

fundraising ideas to raise even more

money for SIA.

Last year we had over 100 suppers

taking part in England and Wales and

we raised £6,000. In the three years

we have been running the event we

have raised £20,000 to support spinal

cord injured people.

The money raised from the suppers

will help the Spinal Injuries

Associa t ion offer support to

individuals who become paralysed and

their families, from the moment a

spinal injury

occurs, and

for the rest

of their

lives, by

p r o v i d i n g

services and

publications which enable and

encourage paralysed people to lead

independent lives.

Every year in the UK over 1,000

people experience a spinal cord injury

and there are an estimated 40,000

spinal cord injured people in the UK

alone.

Community Fundraising Officer,

Elizabeth Wright, says, ―The Fish and

Chip Supper is a wonderful

opportunity for a great evening with

friends and family. We are also

encouraging people who work to hold

a Fish and Chip Lunches in their work

places to raise even more funds. You

may be even a local community group

wanting to run a fun evening with your

group. Be a part of something special

and make a real difference to help

spinal cord injured people gain access

to the information and support they

need to enable them to live full and

independent lives.‖

Women’s Institute At our meeting on 8th February, our

President Thelma Blamey was in the

chair. Reports were made on our

walking activities (now weekly), the

monthly Book Club, and a very good

New Year's Lunch on 18th January at

the local Crown Inn. Dates were noted

for future coffee mornings and other

fund-raising events.

There was a warm welcome for the

guest speaker, Mr. Geoff Herbert,

accompanied by his wife - both well

known in the village. In contrast to his

talk last year (on Australia), Geoff

took us on a ―Voyage to Antarctica‖,

sub-titled ―Antarctica for Softies‖! It

was a fascinating talk, well supplied

with visual aids.

Geoff described the start of the trip at

Rio and a hotel overlooking the

Copacabana Beach. From there they

took a memorable trip inland to view

the dramatic series of waterfalls at

Iguassu. Three days later they

embarked on a cruise ship bound for

the Antarctic Peninsula, calling en

route at Montevideo and Puerto

Madryn. After some days at sea, with

a chance to study the birdlife, they

visited the Falkland Islands, finding

Port Stanley very British, with

Victorian-type buildings and red

telephone boxes.

The most exciting and stimulating part

of the voyage was the approach to

Antarctica, known as ―Iceberg Alley‖.

This area had dramatic scenery of

sweeping glaciers, blue-tinted icebergs

of incredible sizes and shapes with

dark strata of ash bearing witness to

volcanic

eruptions.

There was

also the

occasional

thunderous roar as a huge chunk of

iceberg broke away. Everywhere there

were colonies of penguins in their tens

of thousands. With midsummer

temperatures still at -5o C, signs of

habitation were few - just the odd

temporary building.

Geoff described the gradual rise in

temperature as the ship headed back

towards Cape Horn and up the west

coast, calling in at Chilean ports en

route to (eventually) the Panama

Canal. Overall they had been lucky to

have good clear weather and relatively

calm seas and their voyage had been a

highly memorable one.

Geoff was heartily thanked by Frances

Shone for entertaining us once again

and the evening ended with a welcome

hot drink before going out into the

cold. The next meeting will be on

Wednesday, 14th March, at 7.30pm in

the Epworth Hall, when Mrs. Victoria

Ennion will talk to members about

―Stress-free Kitchen Gardening‖. All

are welcome.

We have again ordered a supply of

‗The Real Easter Eggs‘ from the

Meaningful Chocolate Co. The

company introduced these eggs last

year, as out of a whopping 80 million

chocolate Easter Eggs sold each year,

not one of them mentioned Jesus on

the box. The Real Easter Egg changed

this and brings together the Easter

themes of hope and new life in three

ways:

* The egg is made from Fairtrade

chocolate. (The whole crop from one

chocolate tree makes 16 Real Easter

Eggs.)

* It is the only Easter egg to tell the

story of the Jesus Easter miracle on the

box and has three crosses on the front

as a reminder. This is a teaching

opportunity for the 50% of children

who do not

know the Easter

story.

* It gives money

away to two charities: Traidcraft

Exchange - which helps small-scale

farmers in the developing world trade

their way out of poverty, and Baby

Lifeline - which supports new mums

here in the UK.

Please phone Maddie Sumsion on

0 1 2 6 4 8 1 0 2 8 4 o r e m a i l

[email protected] to

place your order. The eggs cost £3.99

each. 24 have been ordered and 21

remain available. Please let me know

quickly if you wish to buy an egg – if

more than 21 are required I can see if I

can increase the order.

Church flowers for Easter Come and help us decorate the church with spring flowers for Easter. You

would be most welcome. We are not looking for expertise, just people who

love working with flowers be it in a vase or oasis. It is fun and satisfying. We

also welcome children who would like to have a go. If you only wish to wield a

broom to help us tidy up afterwards that would be wonderful. It is not a big

cleaning job, it is just tidying up.

We meet in the Church at 9.30am on Saturday 7th April.

Remembering a loved one Easter is a time to remember loved ones no longer with us. If you would like to

sponsor a lily in their memory, please contact Penny Ward on 01794 389649

or drop your sponsor money through the letterbox of 5 Forge Close (next to the

Working Mens Club) together with the name of the person or persons you

would like remembered and your name. The sponsor monies are £2.50 per lily

per person remembered.

After an extended Christmas break,

Tiny Tots came back to a very cold

church to think about cold weather.

We made snowmen, painted

snowflakes and did collages of icy

weather.

We have since gone on to think about

our face and the wonderful things it

does. So far we have found out what

we can do with our eyes, nose and

mouth. With our eyes we have

looked at the pictures of animals in

church, with our noses we have smelt

lots of different herbs, spices and

flowers and with our mouths we have

sung our favourite songs and eaten

y u m m y

cakes!

We have

had great

fun making masks and binoculars,

pots with pot-pouris, collages of

flowers, loud speakers and iced cakes.

We have also enjoyed singing ―Head,

shoulders, knees and toes‖ and ―If

you‘re happy and you know it‖.

During March we will continue

thinking about our face and then we

will celebrate Mothering Sunday and

Easter.

Funday Club We have spent the first half term of

2012 thanking God for our wonderful

body and all the amazing things it can

do:

Hearing

Seeing

Speaking

Touching

Our bible stories have been based

around these themes and have

covered some of Jesus‘ miracles in

healing people. These have made us

think about what our lives

would be like if we were unable to

use different parts of our bodies.

We have had great fun in our craft

activities. We have made masks,

s p e a k i n g p u p p e t s , m u s i c a l

instruments and bird collages using

cut outs of our hands for feathers.

Funday Club is now looking forward

to its trip to the Village Pantomime

during half term.

A reminder that the next service will be held

on Palm Sunday (1st April at 3.30pm). We

hope as many people as possible can come to

celebrate the coming of Spring and enjoy

some refreshments after the service.

The Minister has the last word

Printed and published by the Parish of Somborne with Ashley, Church of St Peter and St Paul,

King‘s Somborne, Hampshire

Dear Friends,

It is hard to believe that I am writing this for the March edition of The

Gauntlet. The year seems to be passing so quickly.

We are now well into the season of Lent. I remember last year being very

impressed with the Lent resources advertised on the internet, so I decided

to look again this year and was not disappointed. There are things for

individuals, for groups and for churches, ranging from courses and books

to DIY Labyrinth kits. There are also charity campaigns such as Water-

aid and the USPG 40 days of Peace. You can even learn to be more like

Jesus whilst watching television!

One course, the one that particularly caught my eye, was called

―Welcome‖. Most churches think they are pretty good at welcoming new

people and visitors, but when Tear Fund conducted a survey a few years

ago they found 92% of people who went to church for the first time and

did not return said it was because they did not feel welcomed. There is a

lot more to making people really feel welcome and this material is worth a

read.

Meanwhile you will be very welcome at our local Lent Course and indeed

at all of our local churches.

Yours in the service of Christ,
