As I write this in mid-February, the
low lying parts of the parish are
suffering from too much water, both
from high ground-water levels and,
more obviously, from the overflowing
stream. Perhaps this is not surprising
as our area has had more than double
the usual amount of rain for the time of
year. Many long-standing residents
have said that the stream is higher than
they have ever seen it.
The ford at Tanners Pond has reached
a depth of 2½ feet. Winchester Road
has been closed all the way from the
Post Office to the main Stockbridge-
Winchester road. The Somborne
stream is flowing right from its source
in Crawley. The stream is crossing the
road by the ex-Rack and Manger pub.
In days long gone by, this was quite
usual; in fact the pub was then named
‘The Deluge Hut’.
The Parish Council has activated part
of the Community Resilience Plan
and established a Flood Alert page on
the village website. This page
provides information on the help
available to people affected by the
flooding. Test Valley Borough
Council have supplied sandbags.
Volunteer flood wardens have been
established in the worst affected areas.
A portaloo was installed in Muss Lane
(but this was blown over in the
following storm).
Even when the waters recede, it will
clearly be a long time before the
affected residents can completely get
back to normal.

I hope that we have at last got on top
of the problems with the boiler
following several visits from the
specialized boiler engineer and
replacement of one of the fan overheat
monitors. The boiler now seems to be
working well but it does switch off
after a power cut and of course there
have been several of these during the
recent unsettled spell. In the event of a
power cut, the boiler has to be re-
started manually, this is not difficult
and the instructions are written on the
boiler casing. I will also leave the key
to the boiler house in the kitchen key
box and people can then re-set the
boiler themselves. Please lock the
boiler house after igniting the boiler.
I have had complaints from our regular
users that the Hall is sometimes left in
a mess after one-off parties or other
events at the weekend. The
Management Committee does not wish
to spoil people’s enjoyment but the
Hall must be left clean and tidy after
an event. It is surprising that some
people do not respect our facilities.
This problem is not something
confined to our Hall and some other
village halls have been driven to insist
on receiving a large deposit before
accepting bookings for parties or
similar events. We do not want to
follow this line but it might be
necessary if hirers abuse our facilities.
We are not prepared to risk losing our
regular bookings because of
unthoughtful behaviour by a few
hirers.
On a more positive note, please
remember to come to the coffee
morning which Eileen has arranged for
the 22nd March, the last one was very
successful and I am sure this one will
be just as enjoyable [see page 13].
Finally may I say how sad I was to see
that the Methodis t Hall has
been flooded. The Epworth Hall has
always in effect been a sister
hall for the Village Hall; some events
are best held in the Village
Hall but many are more suited to the
Epworth Hall. I hope that the
drying out and repairs will not take too
lo n g a nd t ha t t h e Ep wo r t h
Hall will soon be back in commission.

March footpath walk 6 miles (9.5km) 2.5 hours
Sunday 30 March 2014 2.00pm King’s Somborne Village Hall
We leave the village along Winchester Road and take the path past the Wood
Store (ex-Beef Unit). We continue towards Up Somborne before turning left to
take the steep path down to Little Somborne. At Little Somborne we head north
to North Park Farm and the path back towards the village. We
take the permissive footpath that avoids the A3057 and joins
New Lane. Then it is down New Lane before returning to the
Village Hall via footpath 14 and Muss Lane. Note: the route
may be changed to avoid the floods.

Let us hope that by the time you
receive your copy of The Gauntlet this
month, Spring will be well on its way
and the floods will have receded.
As I write, the Methodist Chapel is
flooded and February’s lunch will have
been held in the Jubilee Room of the
Village Hall. Please continue to look
out for elderly and vulnerable
neighbours and give us a ring any time
if you think we may be able to help.
The flooding also means that the Drop-

Also, note the
different pick
up time for the

month.

Parish Council news February 2014
At its February meeting, Councillors
considered the problems generated by
the flooding, the Test Valley Local
Plan consultation, funding for the
multi-use games areas (MUGA) and
the long awaited all-weather path.
The flood risk was serious for many
residents living alongside the Borne or
where the fields drained down onto the
road. It had been established that the
Environment Agency was only
responsible for certain stretches of the
river and not the length passing
through the Winchester Road area.
Residents in this area should approach
Test Valley Borough Council 01264
368000 for sand bags, if any were still
available, or purchase their own from
local stores. General advice on
preventative measures was available
from the Community Resilience Plan,
copies of which were held in Corner
Stores and Cross Stores, the Churches,
Village Hall and by the WI, and on
The Sombornes website. Those
residents with local knowledge of the
elderly and vulnerable were keeping in
touch. The message was to think
ahead, keep safe and seek help or
advice before problems arise.
The draft Test Valley Local Plan 2011
– 2029 was now out for consultation
and could be accessed on the TVBC
website or via a link on The
Sombornes website. This document
identifies a need for 588 new houses in
each of the next 20 years. TVBC wish
to encourage as wide a response as
possible so that it can accurately
reflect local views and needs; the
consultation ends at the end of March.
The Parish Council’s
main concerns are
how many of these
additional dwellings
are likely to be built
in The Sombornes
and the provision of
additional water supplies, given a
statement in the Plan that no additional
water will be drawn from the aquifers.
Our formal response will be
determined at our March meeting. In
the meantime, you are encouraged to
make your own responses.
We are very pleased to announce that
our bid to the Veolia Environmental
Trust for a grant towards the cost of
the MUGA was successful. They will
grant £23,150 towards the total costs
of £60,100. Funding totalling £26,950
has been received from elsewhere
which leaves £10,000 to be funded
locally or from Parish Council
reserves. The bottom line is that the
project can, at last, go ahead.
A final route for the all-weather path,
from Lancaster Green via the village
centre and school to the Village Hall
has been agreed, with funding
provided by the County Council.
Unfortunately, English Heritage would
not now agree to the path crossing
through the two mounds on the John
O’Gaunt palace site. So the route will
now follow the existing grass path.
Another path from the school
following the mounds will join up with
the main path before passing through
the kissing gate, skirting behind the
skate ramp and behind the junior
football pitch to the Hall.
11
At last, all the legal paperwork has
been completed for SSE to bury the
overhead electricity supply cables
under the 3 Fields site between The
Gorrings and Romsey Road. Once the
work is completed, the likelihood of
power failures will be substantially
reduced.
We currently have a vacancy on the
Parish Council. If you are interested in
finding out more or, better still,
applying to be considered, please
contact me as soon as possible as we
propose to fill the vacancy by co-
option at the March meeting.
As always, a full set of the minutes can
be found on The Sombornes website
and in both Cross Stores and Martin’s
Corner Shop.
The next meeting of the Parish Council
will be on Monday 3 March 2014 at
7.00pm at a location to be advised.
Peter Storey
Clerk to
King’s Somborne Parish Council
Meeting the Vicar.... As many will know, when families get in contact to
arrange a baptism, wedding or funeral, I usually meet
with them either in their homes or at The Rectory in
Stockbridge.
It might be that from time to time some would like to take
the opportunity to see me for other reasons, such as for a
brief chat, to check something out or if they need some help.
With this in mind, I am planning to be in the ‘Parish Room’ (entrance through
the brown left side gate of the ‘New Vicarage’, Romsey Road) on a number
occasions in the next few months. For those unfamiliar with the ‘New
Vicarage’, it is next to Froghole, opposite the footpath to the Recreation
Ground from Romsey Road.
Please go around the side of the house and do not ring the bell on the front door
as the Vicarage, at present, has tenants.
Dates coming up are:
Wednesday 12th March 2.00 - 4.00pm
Wednesday 19th March 2.00 - 4.00pm
Wednesday 9th April 2.00 - 4.00pm

The Somborne
and District Society Following a very successful New Year
lunch for members at Bertie’s in
Romsey, The Somborne Society has
now launched into our programme for
2014.
Our first speaker of the year, in
J a n u a r y , wa s F r a n k G r e e n ,
archaeologist for the New Forest
National Park. Unfortunately Frank
came without his prepared talk on the
Maritime Archaeology of the New
Fo res t Co a s t , wh ic h wa s a
disappointment to a couple of
members who had come along
specifically for that topic. However,
Frank showed his wide knowledge and
flexibility by giving another talk, with
illustrations, on the History of the
Lymington Salt Industry. This proved
very enlightening and was enjoyed by
those present. Unfortunately another
problem which beset us that evening
was a boiler breakdown in the Village
Hall which meant that all present had
to wrap up well. Apologies to all who
shivered!
Our February talk was by Sarah
Marsden on The History of the Hythe
Ferry. This will be followed, on
Wednesday 26 March, by Nick
Griffiths speaking on the period known
as The Dark Ages – the time between
Roman and Saxon Britain.
Somborne children, including those in
our village school, will by now have
heard about this year`s John of Gaunt
Award and we are looking forward to a
bumper crop of entries for this popular
history project.
Our World War One project continues
to develop but we welcome further
information, illustrations and artefacts
which illustrate the impact of that
conflict on our village community.
We hope to stage an exhibition in the
church during the late summer.

Considerate drivers As lead Parish Councillor for Highways and Road Safety, I wish to thank
those drivers who drove sufficiently slowly through the flood waters so as not
to send their wheel wash into residents’ gardens and front doors.

John of Gaunt Award 2014 Every year the Somborne and District History Society hold a competition for children
(Years 2-6 living in the Sombornes and Ashley or attending King’s Somborne Primary
School) to encourage interest in local history. As always, it is hoped that this will inspire
children to look back in history and appreciate their local environment more.
This year it is launched on Friday 14th February and children will have until 14th
March to complete their entry (about 6 weeks with half term holiday). Judging will
then be carried out before the Presentation of prizes on Tuesday 28th March.
The topic The topic should be historical and preferably based on the local Test Valley area.
Examples are:
An event like World War 1 and how it affected those living in the area
Local people (like Rev Richard Dawes)
Local places of interest (like the Horsebridge railway)
Buildings/Houses (listed buildings/houses in & around the locality)
But there are many more possibilities. Some children may choose to enter work
done in school topic work.
How to present the ideas The children can present the information they have collected in any format, it does not
have to be pages and pages of work. Examples are:
a picture or photographs labelled and with information
a booklet or scrapbook
a chart, maps or diagrams with information
a diary – an A3 display sheet
a pretend newspaper article – an interview
a model (but must be supported with written work)
a film with narrative
The children may think of another way and be totally original!
The children’s names and ages should be put in the envelope provided and attached to
the piece of work to ensure fairness when judging.
What can you do to help?
Please help your child select a suitable topic and find some material to help them
start their topic. It must be their own work.
Remember they should not just copy large extracts of material but select and use the
information in their own way.
Encourage your child to be inquisitive and curious about the area they live in.
COULD YOUR CHILD BE A WINNER THIS YEAR?
Children attending King’s Somborne School should hand in entries to their class
teacher. Those attending other schools should leave entries at Carmel House,
Horsebridge Road, King’s Somborne no later than 4 pm on 14 March.

The Annual Parochial Church Meeting
and election of Churchwardens are the
political side of our Christian life. As
such, they are important. A good
attendance shows that we are interested
in St Peter & St Paul’s mission, as well
as making the meetings lively and
memorable!
The meetings this year take place on
Monday 28th April starting at 7.30pm
in the Church. The election of
Churchwardens is open to people who
live in the parish as well as those on
the church electoral roll. Only persons
whose names are entered upon the
church Electoral Roll (and such
persons only) are entitled to vote at the
election of parochial representatives of
the laity (Parochial Church Council).
At the Annual Meeting the financial
statements for 2013 will be discussed
together with reports from various
church groups. The Minutes of the
2013 Annual Meeting have to be
approved as well.
This year, some members of the
Parochial Church Council (PCC) come
up for election or re-election as well as
one vacancy each for the positions of
Churchwarden. If you would like to be
considered for any of these posts,
forms are available from me. Or,
indeed if you would like to know more
about what is involved, please do
contact me.

Test Valley Benefice — Pilgrimage Together
Saturday 8th March The Test Valley Benefice has been together now since 1 June 2012. We have been
trying to work together in some areas to fulfil some of the vision priorities agreed in
March 2012. Each parish has had to come to terms with a sense of loss and the fact that
things have changed and that we have to find different ways of doing many of the things
which in the past the local vicar would have done.
Others parishes going through similar experiences have found having ‘quiet days’ away
together helpful and Winchester Cathedral is one place which has been used. The
Cathedral can provide a place away from the usual hustle and bustle where space can be
provided for a Pilgrimage through the Cathedral. Those attending are able to reflect on
what it means to be a Disciple of Jesus, how we can journey together, sharing those
things best shared on a Benefice basis and encouraging each other in our respective
parishes - especially for growth.
As many as possible from all four parishes are encouraged to come. The Cathedral will
provide the facilities as part of their support for parishes. The half day will be led by
Revd Canon Roly Riem, assisted by Cathedral Guides. This day is planned for 8 March,
starting at 9.30am and ending with a ‘bring and share lunch’ at 1.15pm. Details will be
in all the churches. Please come if you can – a time to learn and grow together.
‘Psalm 84.v5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set
on pilgrimage’
The half day Cathedral Pilgrimage is planned for 8th March 2014 and will
provide:
9.30am Sharing together. An outline of ‘journey’ and initially the journey being taken
by the Cathedral. How the cathedral has responded to the challenges of 21st
Century. What difficulties have been faced?; what losses coped with?;
listening to God.

11.00 Tours - a choice of:

Special Places
12noon Back together for spiritual reflection of what has been absorbed and heard.
Prayer and leaving our hurts and disappointments with God
A special service to end the half day of reflection
1.15pm Lunch together (please bring a contribution for a bring and share lunch)
(This will be in the Marquee behind the Refectory)
1.30pm Another tour for those who would like to stay longer and to pray after the tour.
The focus of the day will be to build relationships; to reflect on what it means to
be a Christian in today’s world; to think about how we treat each other; to
consider what the impact is on the wider world when we don’t function well.
More details and enrolment form can be found at the back of the church.

encountered. She has emotive stories of
the challenges she faced during her
mission to provide free healthcare to
orphans, street children and girls suffering after genital mutilation and abuse.
Find out what amazing work an Osteopath can do outside the bubble of
Hampshire when faced with such diversity!

Somborne Sisterhood WI
The February meeting of the
Somborne Sisterhood WI was a
wonderful way to kick off the 2014
programme. Samantha Boot
welcomed all those attending,
including new members and guests.
After brief announcements, Samantha
went on to introduce the speaker for
the evening, Emma Way from Taste, a
local catering company. Emma had
brought with her a huge array of
ingredients and was able to give a
comprehensive Masterclass in the art
of the canapé. There was a chance for
all attending to help assemble these
delicious little morsels and learn some
tricks of the trade. Throughout the
evening, Emma also answered
questions put to her and there was a
rolling slide show of photographs of
Emma’s food to inspire us further.
Once the canapés had been assembled
we were allowed to dive in and taste –
from dates with mango chutney and
bacon, to mini crispy duck pancakes.
We were spoilt for choice. And that
was before the two sweet canapés had
been spotted.
Throughout
the evening
members and
g u e s t s
enjoyed cups of tea or glasses of wine
to wash down the edible goodies.
Towards the end of the night the raffle
was drawn. Samantha then thanked
Emma on behalf of all attending and
the meeting closed with everyone
going home slightly more full than
when they arrived.

Kings Somborne C of E Primary
school have made a difference! The
church and school community joined
in with the UNICEF Day of Change to
raise funds to help children all over the
world go to school. They have found
out that 57 million children around the
world do not have a chance to go to
school!
We held a sponsored maths challenge
to raise funds. In so doing, our
children also became times table
wizards. Importantly the children
learnt just how important education is
in their quest to achieve their own
aspirations. They are truly becoming
global citizens!
It was also
wo n d e r f u l
fo r our
whole community to be involved in the
project as the collection from
Education Sunday contributed to this
worthwhile cause.
The children are aiming to raise
enough money to buy a ‘School in a
box’ which is a magic box containing
everything for at least 40 children to
continue their education in an
emergency. So, thank you to everyone
for supporting the school and children
across the world.

Warmest congratulations to the
exuberant members of the after-school
drama club who treated parents and
friends to a splendid performance of
Peter Pan. The show was directed by
Jessica Waters-Leavin, Artistic
Director of Winchester based Firefly
Theatre School, supported by Director
Paul Firman, Stage Manager Chris
Herlihy and Musical Director Thomas
Couch. This was the culmination of a
term’s hard work, during which pupils
focussed on the theme of pantomime.
It was thoroughly enjoyed by the
audience – and, more importantly, the
performers!
This is, of course, a story very familiar
to us all, but the children made it very
much their own. It had all the familiar
ingredients of the Darling family, Peter
Pan, Captain Hook and the pirates, and
Tinkerbell, whose life was saved by
the audience’s enthusiastic declaration
of their belief in fairies. Almost 30
children were involved and looking
splendid in their costumes, delivered
their lines accurately and expressively,
really becoming the characters they
were portraying. Their enjoyment of
the experience shone through the
performance. A very responsive
audience entered into spirit of the

Education Sunday held in February
provided a lovely opportunity for
members of our community to come
together with children from our village
school to share in and celebrate their
work. The children’s work displayed
in the Church and the enthusiastic
contribution of those taking part in the
actual service ensured that this was a
real school and community event.
The service, led by Sue Holligan,
opened with Lucy Welby and Matthew
Beck lighting the candle which is used
for school assemblies. Then
clarinetists Daisy Natt and Jessica
Clayden played ‘Oh Susannah’. The
congregation were also treated to
musical solos from Rowan Horsfield,
Matthew Beck, Lucy Welby, Matthew
Younger and Harrison Walsh. The
hymns sung were all ones which the
children sing regularly in school,
including ‘Come on and Celebrate’,
‘Be still for the presence of the Lord’
and ‘Be bold, be strong’.
The theme of the talk delivered by Sue
Holligan was ‘dare to be different’,
after which the school’s Rights and
Responsibilities Ambassadors Jessica
and Rowan outlined the school’s
efforts in this area, making special
mention of the school in Uganda
which our school supports.
Prayers of thanksgiving were read by
Daniel, Dilys, Lizzie, Emily, Harrison,
Lisa, Furyian and Fareya, members of
the school Funday Club. and members
of the school Worship Team. Jessica,
Daisy, Matthew, Millie, and Amelia
led the prayers for others.
The scripture reading, Matthew 5, 38-
48 was beautifully read by Rowan
Horsfield and Harrison Walsh.
Tiny Tots ensured that the very
youngest of our youngsters were
represented, with a reminder that they
meet in the church at 2.15pm on
Tuesdays.
The collection taken was for UNICEF,
to be added to the money already
raised in school for this cause.
Refreshments were served after the
service, providing a pleasant social
ending to a delightful occasion.

As you will be aware we are suffering
the effects of the flooding with the
chapel being 3-4 inches deep in water
which has seeped up through the
floorboards. Everything has been done
to remove what we can and to put the
larger items up on blocks. However,
we have had to cancel our services for
the foreseeable future; but, being a
resourceful bunch, we’re trying to
make alternative arrangements to
worship together elsewhere.
To begin with we were hoping the
Epworth Hall, being slightly elevated,
might escape flooding, but with the
ever rising water and bad weather it
succumbed in the end and is now in a
rather damp and soggy state!
We are sorry for any inconvenience
this causes our regular users but hope
to get up and running as soon as it is
possible to do so, although realistically
this could be several months. Thank
you to everybody for their patience
and understanding.
Unfortunately, we are having to cancel
Drop-in coffee mornings until further
notice but be assured we’ll be back as
soon as possible!
Finally a big thank you to those
villagers who have expressed concern
and offered assistance. It is greatly
appreciated by us all.

Prayer Meeting We hold our prayer meetings on the first Monday of each month at
2.15pm. We meet for about an hour at Shappon, Romsey Road, when we pray
for our parish, families, friends and anyone else in need.
If you have any prayer requests there are slips on the table at the back of the
church which you may put into the box provided or alternatively phone me,
Dulcie Witts on 01794 388267.
Our meeting is very informal and we should be pleased to welcome new
members.
Home Group We meet at 8.00pm usually on the third Thursday of each month. We
are a relatively small group of Christians from different traditions who meet for
informal study, discussion and fellowship and we would very much welcome
any newcomers who care to come along and join us.
Contact Nigel Coleman on 01794 388 449 for more information.

February has been a busy month for
Tiny Tots. We learnt some exciting
stories from the Old Testament
including Noah’s Ark, Joshua and the
battle of Jericho, Jonah and the whale
and the story of Moses and the parting
of the Red Sea.
We were also involved in the
Education Sunday Service lead by Sue
Holligan. We were delighted to have
been asked to do a show and tell of
what we get up to, despite our little
trumpeters getting stage fright!
After half term we will revisit the story
of Easter, starting with Lent, and
leading up to a ‘Jesus is Alive’ egg
hunt. We will be making Easter
bonnets at our last session before the
holidays on Tuesday 1st April.

So, if you would like to join us, please

at 3.15pm. Sadly, if numbers do not

Messy Church becomes a
very Watery Church!
Unfortunately our February Messy Church had to
be cancelled as both the Methodist Chapel and the adjacent Epworth Hall were flooded - and
still are, as I write this. It is desperately sad to see our buildings in such a sorry, soggy state and they will take months to dry out completely.
But we are determined that Messy Church will be back on March 16th and we are currently looking for a temporary venue. So please look out
for posters and facebook announcements telling you where it will be, and do come along and support us. Everyone is welcome, and wherever
we are we hope to have the usual story, crafts and Messy stuff, songs,
activities and tea.

The Minister has the last word
Dear Friends,
I have rather optimistically sent in the details of the services to be held in the
Methodist church in March as currently our church is under water! There is
always the possibility that the hall will be dry if it is safe to gain access to it and
so we could possibly use that. We have been greatly cheered by offers of help
both from the village and from the wider circuit. Also by the invitation to
worship with our friends at the Parish Church.
It is great that people go out of their way to help others in difficult times and there
are many much worse off who we must also help and pray for. It is also
important that lessons are learnt and we really do try to plan properly for the
future. So much of our lives is built on the quick fix principle from government
right down to individuals and the less cost the better.
This is true for our personal lives and our faith also. Prayer, study and discipline
as an investment for the future? I don’t suppose I would have many buyers? And
yet in all our difficult times there is much talk of “Resilience” both for
communities and individuals as something that helps us get through and come out
the other side. Having a strong faith is something that helps build resilience. But
having such a faith doesn’t usually just happen, although many would wish that it
did. It is something that has to be built over time. Lent, the 40 days that begins
on Ash Wednesday, 5th March, is one of the periods in the Christian year when
we seek to build up our faith by examining ourselves, looking for weak spots that
we can repair and buttress for the future storms of life.
As we repair the flood damage locally and nationally let us always remember
others less fortunate and seek to build stronger community and stronger faiths this
Lent and in the months to come.
Yours in the service of Christ,
