The Gardening Group REPORT BY PHIL GARDNER
Our Mayor to be Speaker at the AGM We are very fortunate in having Dr Moira Jen-
kins, Mayor of Victor Harbor, as our guest
speaker at the AGM at the Christian Gospel Centre at 7:30pm on Friday November 29th.
As part of her electoral platform Moira said “I am convinced that Victor Harbor’s progress and reputation as a Regional City can be en-hanced by strong and caring leadership, and
good communication between council and the community. I believe that it is possible to have a council that works WITH the community and is PART of the community.”
As a community based organisation ELRGI is
pleased that Moira intends talking to us on the Importance of Commu-
nity between the Council and all of us.
All ELRGI members are invited to the AGM and can be assured of an
interesting, informative and relevant agenda which will include an in-sight into the review of the Encounter Lakes Franklin Island Manage-ment Plan proposed for early2020. Resident participation will be en-
couraged in this process.
You can look forward to a very interesting and well informed speaker

Message From The President
terests with the opening of the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foun-
dation (WCHF) 'Laklinyeri' Beach House on the weekend of the
20th/21st June.
The centrespread of this newsletter is dedicated to this major under-
taking by the WCHF and details how our community can support the
work of the foundation.
The name, 'Laklinyeri' was given to the house by the traditional own-
ers, the Ngarrindjeri-Ramindjeri peoples and Ramindjeri artist, Cedric
Varcoe, explains the meaning of Laklinyeri as follows:
“Laklinyeri alludes to many things relating to family; close fam-
ily and the larger grouping of families related through kinship,
stories, songs and dance. The name denotes a sense of belonging
to all of the family, your place and interconnections with each other, the land, the place and the life in that place. Laklinyeri
encompasses the heart, the mind, the sense of being. Everything
continues to be connected through time.”
The WCHF have established a truly wonderful facility built to match
the special needs of the families who will access the house within the
peaceful environment of our lakeside estate. Our centrefold provides an insight into the project and how we, as a community might assist
in the future.
We are delighted that Her Worship, Mayor Dr Moira Jenkins will be Guest Speaker at our AGM on Friday 29th November 2019, so please
put the date in your diary. Mayor Jenkins has been very active with
community groups in the Victor Harbor region and met with the
ELRGI Committee recently to learn more about the activities and the
community issues we encounter.
We have been told that last summer of people in the lake near Ketch
Place interfering with the aerator equipment. The aerator is crucial to
maintaining lake water quality. We have raised the matter with Coun-
cil and asked that warning signs be provid-ed at the site. We would ask that if you see
anyone meddling with this equipment
please report it the CVH on 8551 0500.

I am sure I speak for most members of the En-
counter Lakes and Franklin Island communi-
ties when I say that we are fortunate to live in a community that often reflects the best aspects
of human nature in caring and supporting
those facing challenges. Our community has
been given an opportunity to pursue those in-

We have a missing person! Peter Bonica has paid his 2019 subs by EFT, but we
have no idea where he lives. If you can help, please email or call the Treasurer.

In recent months there have been several
burglaries in the Lakes precinct so we
thought it would be worth passing on secu-rity hints identified by Allianz, one of Aus-
tralia’s leading insurers. In this part of the
world there is a potential for risks to in-
crease as the result of the influx of strangers.
1. Ensure you have locks on all doors and windows. It is worth lock-
ing your electricity meter after consultation with your supplier
2. If you can, cut back shrubs to provide a clear view to the street
from your yard
3. Consider shutters, grilles and solid core doors. These are harder to force.
4. Keep sheds secure to so that you don’t provide tools for a burglar.
5. Ask friends to collect mail and junk mail and park a car in your
drive if you are away
6. Don’t hide keys outside or lend them to tradesmen 7. Store your valuables in a safe
8. Don’t leave valuables on view inside your house
9. Install an alarm or have a dog at home when you are out.
10. Make friends with your neighbours and look out for each other
When collecting subs several volunteer committee members were
abused by residents who weren’t interested in being members.
We accept that not everybody is interested, but find it sad that some
people feel it is appropriate to abuse other locals. It is unfortunate
these people choose to live in this very pleasant part of the world.

It’s the time of year when Trevor
Rose is about to meet with Council
to discuss remedial action for the Lakes beaches. More next issue.
Don’t be Santa to Burglars
Santa on the Lake 2019 is the 20th year residents will
be able to celebrate Christmas day
with our very own Santa. We will be
throwing 300 bags of lollies to chil-
dren on the lakefront and beaches
and delivering more than 100 pre-sents. A one page newsletter will
issue early December with details

This table shows the ELRGI membership by street. At our mem-
bership is the highest that has ever been achieved.
We welcome five new
members into the
Residents Group and say thank you to our
eight loyal friends,
and are sorry to lose
one member, alt-
hough this might
only be temporary.
Many would not be
aware that Cutter Circuit was part of the original Lakes development
back in the late 1980’s and this is the reason that its residents are in-
cluded in our ELRGI membership. The very sensible development of
Cutter gave the street the magnificent park setting as its centrepiece.
We would welcome any contributions to our newsletter that Cutter resi-
dents might care to share with other people in Encounter Lakes/Franklin Island.
Cutter, like other “off-lake” streets can be part of our annual Santa on
the Lake activity. We can deliver presents to residents at the landing in
Bill WJ White Reserve in Matthew Flinders Drive. By being there on
Christmas morning you will be thrown bags of lollies and be part of the
spirit of Christmas that the lake facilitates.
The ELRGI is also your conduit into the Council for any suggestions for
improving your area. This applies to residents right across the Lakes
area, and Council takes all suggestions we put forward seriously.

The WCH Foundation Beach House, located in Central Drive, Franklin Island, is an extraordinary holiday home where families can relax and
create wonderful memories.
Officially opened in July 2019, the Beach House is South Australia’s
first purpose-built holiday home for families with children with complex
medical needs or in palliative care.
The great Australian family getaway is at the beach and thanks to the
Beach House the opportunity to experience this quintessential holiday is now possible for these families.
Families’ stays are funded through donations made to the WCH Founda-
tion. We work closely with the families to help create bespoke holidays to
meet their wishes and needs, whether it is enjoying experiences in the
local Victor Harbor area or a professional photography session to cap-
ture the special moments.
The Beach House is the perfect sanctuary for families to relax and spend treasured time together.
The home is specifically de-
signed, constructed and med-
ically equipped to meet the
needs of children with com-
plex medical needs or in pal-liative care, while the beauti-
ful interiors, landscaping and
sweeping views of the lake
create a sense of calm and
wellness.
The Beach House can sleep up to 12 people allowing im-
mediate and extended family, as well as friends to stay, so everyone can
experience this special holiday.

You should make a point of visiting www.elrgi.org.au regu-
larly as it offers newsletters, contacts for your committee,
SCAM risks and other relevant Encounter Lakes information.
The Beach House has a
lovely, relaxing outlook over
the Franklin Island water-way that emphasises the
tranquillity of this location.
In the outside area there are
specially designed play facil-
ities to add to the total
Beach House experience.
There are also opportunities for Lakes residents to con-
tribute. The Women’s &
Children’s Hospital Foundation welcomes volunteers to assist in the
running of our Beach
House Program. Volun-
teer roles include taking part in working bees at
the home, greeting and
orientating families when
they first arrive and
packing welcome ham-pers. Training will be
provided for volunteer
roles. If you are interest-
ed in volunteering or
would like further infor-
mation, please contact Beach House Program Manager Kristen Hardy on 8464 7909 or
Be Part of the Lakes’ Future The Lakes Precinct has the rare benefit of a

ing maintenance.. Council plans to review and update this plan in early 2020, five years after
it was put in place.
