Welcome to the May edition of Gem’s The Future magazine, the hub of allthings Gem!

Every month Gem looks to welcome a new brand to the portfolio, expanding therange of products and categories we supply. April saw the launch of InToro andMotörheadphönes, both with a unique product range in very different markets.This month, we’re welcoming OTONE Audio and DGM.

OTONE Audio officially launched to consumers at The Gadget Show in April lastyear and, with a second show under their belts, are quickly establishingthemselves as a brand who mean business. The initial positive consumerreviews really reflect the impressive audio products; they are well worth checking out.

We launch our first ever Tablet PC’s with DGM, manufacturers of high qualityaffordable LCD and Digital accessories, this month. The five-strong rangeincludes a variety of sizes from 7” through to 10.1” all running on the Androidplatform. Take a look at page 7 for more information on the launch.

It’s a busy month of planning as we begin the preparations for our summerpromotions. Working collaboratively with our vendors yields fantastic results (aswe’ve found with the exclusive software bundle, combining Microsoft OfficeHome and Student with Norton Internet Security), so I have no doubt that moreexclusive bundles and promotions will be coming soon.

At the end of this month, we’ll be heading to the PCR Retail Boot Camp to showoff some great products from our vendors. The invite only event will provideresellers with the opportunity to meet with some of our team, myself included,and get hands on demonstrations from great products including the Roku mediastreamers, Roxio Game Capture and the Soundship from OTONE.

Kristan Reed We talk to our Gaming Editor about his time working on FutureKristan, tell us what your role entails?In a nutshell, I write about the new games coming outeach month. I try to cram in all the essential informationabout why it's important, some info on the story, and allthe new gameplay features. I sometimes also write abouthardware, and other non-gaming products, when the need arises.

You have worked in the games industry for a numberof years, what are the biggest changes you haveseen in recent times? When I first got started in 1998, the internet was slow andnew, broadband didn't exist yet, and hardly anyone hadmobile phones or used email.

The biggest changes in games have been the vastimprovement in audio-visual production values, the rise ofonline gaming and the vast increase in the number ofpeople actually playing them. People might not think ofthemselves as gamers, but most people now play games.

Describe yourself in 3 words. Thoughtful, Passionate, Persistent.

We’ve already had some fantastic titles launch thisyear such as Metal Gear Rising, Gears of War:Judgment and Tomb Raider, what else is coming thatexcites you?2013 is very much the year that next generation consoleswill dominate the headlines, but there are some amazingblockbuster games coming too. The launch of GTA V is thebig one. After more than five years since the last one, it'sgoing to be epic, and will dominate my free time.

What did you want to be when you grew up? As a teenager, I couldn't imagine anything more alluringthan being in a band. I did actually do that for a while, andit was exactly as much fun as I expected it to be - theproblem is you eventually have to earn enough money tolive. Luckily I was pretty good at this writing lark, andpursued that instead!

The UK’s fastest growing media streaming device hits 5 million units sold

As Roku breaks boundaries, shifting millions of units worldwide, Roku’s VP ofEurope, Clive Hudson shares the history of the brand and how it’s evolving.

How did Roku come about?Roku has been around as a brand since 2002 and means “six” in Japanese. It isthe sixth company that our founder Anthony Wood has started.

The current style of media players were launched in 2008 when Roku announcedwhat was dubbed the “Netflix Player”, having been developed in conjunctionwith Netflix.

ROKU has now sold more than 5 million of these types of players, launching inthe UK and Canada in January 2012.

Following the UK arrival of Roku just over a year ago, how far have theproduct and services available evolved?When we first arrived in the UK our main content was BBC iPlayer, Netflix andCrackle, the Sony Pictures free service. Since then we have added around 300new channels ranging from Ghurka TV, catering for the expat community hereright through to Now TV which is the Sky on demand Movie service, and recentlySky Sports on a buy as you view model. Other great new services are VEVO,which is a free music video service aimed at teenagers and Spotify, the musicstreaming service which you will already be familiar with.

Your relationship with Sky seems to be blossoming… Both BSKYB and News Corporation have become minority shareholders in Rokuin the last year as they saw the strategic importance of the on demand category.

As part of this relationship we have various content agreements and the arrivalof Now TV on Roku was the first result of this, with more to follow in time.

Shortly after the launch in the UK you selected Gem as your exclusivedistribution partner. What made you choose Gem?We chose Gem as our distribution partner for the UK as they are able to give usall of the logistical support and sales and marketing services we need as a start-up company. We don’t have lots of Roku staff based in the UK, so we leanheavily on Gem to help present a professional face to resellers and end users.

Together we’ve seen some fantastic success with the likes of Currysover the last year, how do you plan to develop the Independent channelgoing forward?Currys and Amazon have helped us develop the brand and we believe that thebrand strength is what will help us drive demand through the independentchannels as well. We will be investing in channel sales programs andmerchandising to help independents compete with the big national chains.

Through the summer we plan to increase our points of sales significantly and hope we will have a broad channel in place for the peak selling period of the year when we will have some great promotional offers backed with TV advertising.

Committed to PC GamingA new era begins with Logitech G

One of first things a customer is likely to notice when they see the LogitechG19s Keyboard is the LCD colour GamePanel, this can display vital game stats,communication data, and many other bits of useful information to the gamer.
