The Future of Mobileis Augmented
Augmented Reality vs.Virtual Reality
Marker-based vs.Marker-less Augmented Reality
Research since early 60s 2008: first AR application
used by end consumers: Wikitude
Augmented RealityOverview
AR & Wikitude World Browser Augmented reality camera-
view Points of interests, historical
and future building models, street navigation etc. displayed on screen
Uses GPS, compass and orientation sensors
First AR app available to consumers
Company behind Wikitude: MOBILIZY
Markerless Augmented RealityHow it works
1. Smartphone detects current position (GPS) and orientation (compass, accelerometer)
2. Server request3. Phone calculates
position of POIs on the screen
Necessary components: - GPS- Compass- Accelerometer
What others are saying… Internet agency Razorfish released their Outlook Report
2009 featuring Wikitude as on of the “Top 10 mobile applications to watch in 2009” March 2009
“Top Innovator Award” Mobile World Congress February 2009
Top 50 Google Android Developer Challenge August 2008
Others: Special Price SFR Challenge, National Multimedia Price Austria, Qype Challenge 2nd place, …
“Augmented Reality Comes to Mobile Phones”
“Wikitude offers GPS-based commentary that'll turn your phone into your tour guidewherever you are in the world”
“Technically, it’s an impressive
piece of kit”“Wikitude,
the best friend to call”
“Mobilizy worked with IBM to develop an application for the T-Mobile G1”
1. Printing– since 1500 2. Recorded music – since 1890 3. Cinemas - since 1900 4. Radio – since 1920 5. TV - since 1950 6. Internet - since 1990 7. Mobile – since 2000
(AR) Hype – Why?
Mobile devices are the 7th mass media:
(AR) Hype – Why?
From noon to 6 p.m. mobile devicesare the nr. 1 used mass media.
Actual situation 100.000 mobile applications 2 billion downloads Various App Stores (Apple, Android, Ovi, …)
Mobile hype Devices and platforms
enable developers to create Augmented Reality
Web Reality

Wikitude Facts
~300.000 downloads (Android, iPhone, Symbian)
Available on Android (v 1.5 or higher) iPhone 3GS Symbian (N97, N97 mini, more devices in
pipeline)
1.5 million POI requests per week
WIKITUDE Platform
WIKITUDE WORLD BROWSER WIKITUDE.me: Anyone can add content WIKITUDE API: 3rd party AR development WIKITUDE DRIVE: AR Navigation system WIKITUDE Whitelabel (Lonely Planet, RedBull,
ING etc.)
Content Eco System Real Time Interfaces (Twitter, YouTube etc.) Data Uploads Grid search (finds relevant information around you)
WIKITUDE 4 adds a Content Eco System to WIKITUDE platform
Real Time APIs
User Generated Data
Geocoded data files
WIKITUDE Content Source
How to contribute content … Download or generate (Google Earth) KML files Upload them via WIKITUDE.me Search, view and bookmark on WIKITUDE Open KMLs on the internet like webpages in a web browser
Major role: ARML
Generate Upload ViewGoogleEarth, Internet WIKITUDE.me WIKITUDE (Google Earth)
Internet and HTML vs. AR and ARML HTML was an approach to standardise the
visualization of content from the Internet AR is playing the part of the Internet (visualise
content) Huge datasources contain KML files (Google
Earth) Not sufficient for AR new standard based on KML: ARML
Vision: Every AR browser supports ARML (like Webbrowsers
support HTML). Resuse existing datasources, changes are hardly
necessary, Existing tools like Google Earth support ARML because
they support KML
AR: Where is it going?
Augmented Reality games Augmented Reality communication Glasses instead of phones
AR = essential part in everyday life Any information can be fetched
where and when it is needed (location based and situational aware)
