From the Pastor’s Desk ~
Lent is a preparation for the Resurrection of Christ resting on a tripod of fasting,
prayer, and almsgiving. In Lent, we are called to take a step back from the everyday
bustle of our lives and concentrate on Christ again. It’s a renewal period, a time to
start over, and focus on being members of the body of Christ – instead of the world.
The three elements of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving are instituted —not to make
our lives miserable — but to help us achieve our goal of growing closer to God in the
Lenten Season.
During Lent, many of us give up chocolates, candies, meat, or TV. However, we
should remember fasting is not just about giving up certain foods or something that
we like. Fasting teaches us to discipline and control our body’s wants and desires. We
are then supposed to use this control to focus on abstaining from sin, which brings us
closer to God.
Here are some ways we can practice giving up things that keep us from loving
God, loving one another, and loving our neighbors in our daily living. (Selected from
the Anglican Digest).
Fast from worry; feast on trusting God.
Fast from complaining; feast on appreciation.
Fast from negatives; feast on affirmatives.
Fast from unrelenting pressures; feast from unceasing prayer. Fast from bitterness; feast on forgiveness.
Fast from self-concern; feast on compassion for others.
Fast from discouragement; feast on hope.
Fast from facts that depress; feast on truths that uplift.
Fast from gossip; feast on purposeful silence.
Fast from problems that overwhelm; feast on prayer that sustains.
Fast from apparent darkness; feast on the reality of light.
Blessings,
Sukja

THANK YOU
On behalf of everyone at Portland Upper Mt.
Bethel Food Pantry, I would like to personally
thank each and every one of you for your
generosity in helping to make the 88 children we had this
year to have a blessed and very Merry Christmas. Without
the love and compassion of my late sister Sherma Godshalk,
all the many wonderful volunteers at PUMP and all of you,
this mission would not have been possible.

Prayer Chain We are blessed here at AUMC with a prayer chain. You can submit prayer requests through Pastor Sukja Bang and receive prayer requests through email or phone. If you are not a part of the prayer chain and

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. –Psalm 143:10 I truly believe that God gives us exactly what we need in life, when we need it the most. That perfectly describes my time at AUMC and my life to this day. I have been so blessed to find Moravian Seminary to study for my Master of Divinity degree. It truly has been a gift from God. As I continue in my second semester, I can’t believe this place that I am at in my life. When asked, “What time is it?” in one of my classes the first week of class, I promptly responded with “Time to be joyful and celebrate”. This semester is bringing me to some forks in the road in my journey but through it all I am joyful and celebrating. This semester, I have been given the opportunity to fully immerse myself into two different congregations for several months (Green Pond UMC and Belvidere UMC). From these two churches, I will choose where I want serve as a student pastor for the next 2 years leading up to graduation. With that being said, it means that I’m leaving the familiarity of AUMC and having to trust God even more through it all. It’s scary and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scared. This scripture reminds me that each and every one of us is still learning to do the things that God is calling us to do and sometimes it’s scary. As I reflect and look at where my journey is going, I know that I need to continue to trust where I’m going and what lies ahead of me. Although you won’t see me much the next few months, (and even less as I approach being appointed to my first church after graduation), please know that a piece of my heart will always be here. You all have shepherded me and prayed for me as I’ve discerned and answered this call. I can’t thank each and every one of you enough. You are forever my AUMC family and I have tears as I leave this familiarity. Thank you all for the part that you’ve played in my journey, I pray for each and every one of you. In Christ’s Love, Meagan
