Spotlight on our Director, Youth Services - Gail Gale

Gail Gale She is also the current District 5520 Interact Chairman. View Gail's blog at: http://youngrotarians5520 .blogspot.com/

*********************************************************************************************************

Gail joined Rotary in November 2007. She is a native Westside El Pasoan, having graduated from Coronado High School. She left El Paso to attend Mc Murry University and later, Texas Tech where she earned her bachelors degree in Restaurant Hotel and Institutional Management. Having been in the hospitality industry most of her career, “service” has always been an important aspect of her training and emphasis, therefore it was second nature to embrace Rotary’s service mission. This passion expands into her interest in higher education (college and university administration) while she continues to pursue her masters degree at NMSU in the Educational Management and Development department in the School of Education, specifically designed for Higher Ed Administrators. She is very supportive of youth programs that emphasize leadership development beginning as early as elementary school, but she is most fascinated with the ages 10-25. It will be a fun year exposing young adults to Rotary through Interact and Rotoract clubs in the community and the district. She is a Racial Justice Facilitator for the YWCA, a member of: the Westside Welcome Club, AAUW (American Association of University Women), the Women’s Auxiliary of UTEP. She owns Stateline Home Solutions, a business for special solutions for fast selling techniques for pre-foreclosures, divorce, probate and relocation and is an Independent Associate for Pre-Paid Legal. Her favorite sports are swimming and cycling, and she loves camping and yoga. She and her husband Tom have been married 13 years and most enjoy being parents to their son Thomas. Tom grew up in Las Cruces and attended Beloit College, studying Economics and Management and is a Territory Manager for Ecolab Inc. in El Paso, Alamogordo and Cloudcroft, serving the hospitality industry. They attend Trinity-First Methodist downtown and live in the upper valley. One of Gail’s favorite stories is about not knowing Tom’s last name when they met in 1987.

Rotary History - Charter for the Rotary Club of West El Paso

Our club was chartered on July 12, 1962 with 26 members. The first President was Robert J. Coltharp who was an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at Texas Western College. The first club meeting was held at the Desert Hills Motel from 12:05 pm to 1:20 pm on Monday, July 16, 1962. Our sponsor club was the El Paso (downtown) Club. The Rotary International theme for the 1962-1963 year was "Kindle the Spark Within" and the District Governor was W.A. Adams Jr. Our club's territorial limits were revised on October 18, 1967 and described as follows: "That part of the city and county of El Paso, Texas and the South Eastern corner of Dona Ana County, New Mexico, included within a line beginning at a point four (4) miles North of the Texas-New Mexico state line on the crest side of the Franklin Mountains, thence southerly along the crest of the Franklin Mountains to the center line of Scenic Drive, then Southerly along the center line of Scenic Drive to the intersection with the center line of Rim Road, thence Southwesterly along the center line of Rim Road to the Interchange with Interstate 10, thence Southwesterly from that point to the city limits and the International Boundary line at the Rio Grande River, thence Northwesterly along the Rio Grande River International Boundary line to its intersection with the New Mexico State International Boundary line, thence Westerly a distance of ten (10) miles, thence Northerly a distance of eighteen (18) miles, then Easterly a distance of eleven (11) miles to the point of origin; provided, however, that the Rotary Club of El Paso shall have the right to admit members from that portion of the above described territorial limits within the city limits of El Paso, whose business, executive duties or professional activities are of the scope to include the entire city of El Paso; and provided, further, that the status of any person holding membership[ in the Rotary Club of El Paso prior to adoption of this article shall not be affected by its adoption." So, here we are, almost 48 years later; still thriving and doing very well. Our club has a remarkable history of service to the community. Lets continue to promote the ideals and objectives of Rotary by adhering to the 4-Way Test in both our business and personal lives, and by sharing our Rotary experiences with others as opportunities arise. Congratulations and Thank-You to these current members of our club who have previously served as our President: William Mottinger - 1976-1977 James Heard - 1979-1980 Robert Sanderson - 1985-1986 John Walker - 1988-1989 Ingo Klein - 1996-1997 Norm Peters - 1997-1998 Duane Coleman - 1998-1999 Bob Peterson - 2000-2001 Ellen Speights - 2001-2002 Chet Morgan - 2003-2004 Ken Slavin - 2007-2008 Jesse Allen - 2008-2009 LuAnn Wieland - 2009-2010

Interact Club - Led by Justine Churchman - Serve the City of Vinton

Coronado Interact Club Vice President - Justin Churchman - gathered his fellow Interact members, the Franklin HS members and Coronado's National Honor Society to complete the first and only park in the small village of Vinton, Texas on April 24. The project was in honor of (GYSD) Global Youth Service Day. Westside Rotary Club members Gail Gale, Francis Reyes and Carina Munoz also participated as did five members of the UTEP Rotoract Club. Justin, a junior, scheduled meetings with the Vinton Mayor, Council members and other village employees to determine the plan of work and came up with seven distinct jobs to be completed in one day. Vinton, which had been planning the half-acre park for a year, raised funds for the playground equipment and other construction materials. Justin arranged for the necessary equipment and materials, such as paint, a cement mixer and striping machine, and was lent other equipment by Carina Minoz. He also secured some small cash donations and was able to provide colorful GYSD t-shirts for the workers as well as pizza for lunch. Since he was working on another GYSD project with the Mayor's Top 100 Teens, he set his start time for a little later on April 24, but most of the 36 people who showed worked the full day until 4 p.m. The actual playground equipment was assembled by the manufacturer, but the Village was at a loss as to how to complete the rest of the work. Justin's team did that on April 24: spread mulch throughout the actual play area; laid a screening on exposed dirt areas, then covered that with chat; dug holes for and planted trees; painted handicap access ramp; striped the parking area and stenciled the handicapped parking spot; assembled signs and set them in cement; arranged for butterflies to be painted on the four trashcans and along the sidewalk (the park is called Mariposa Park - Butterfly Park). The team also was to have assembled picnic tables, but they did not come in time and will be done later.

Congratulations to Justin and his team for a Job Well Done!
