PORTICO OF OCTAVIANoted as the centre of the Jewish quarter of Rome, it was built by Augustus in the name of his sister sometime after 27 BC. The colonnaded walks of the portico enclosed the temples of Jupiter Stator and Juno Regina, as well as a library. The structure was used as a fish market from the medieval period, and up to the end of the 19th century: this role is remembered in the name of the nearby church of “the Holy Angel in the Fish Market”.

TEMPIETTO AT SAN PIETRO IN MONTORIOMore sculpture than building, this architecturally significant temple was built on the spot of Saint Peter’s crucifixion. Commissioned by the King Ferdinand, the construction probably started around 1510 under the direction of Donato Bramante. Modern critics see this small, circular “tempietto” as the prototype for the greater Basilica of Saint Pietro in the Vatican.

THE CANNONBALL OF THE MIRACLEIn the chapel of St Bartholomew on the Island, there is a large cannonball lodged in the wall where it struck it during the siege of Rome of June 1849. When the bomb hit the building, the church was full of people, who went miraculously untouched. The cannonball, known as of “the miracle”, was left in the wall as a memento of the event.

An ironic juxtaposition of more than 800 objects (including drawings, furniture and accessories) and the permanent collec-tion of ancient art at Palazzo Altemps, the display brings to the fore the dual soul of the National Roman Museum. The exhibition itin-

Built as a defense wall from the out-side and then incorporated into the city tissue, the Aurelian Walls ac-company the streets, glimpses and horizons of the Eternal City. With over 12 km of length on which they still develop, they are the largest monument of Imperial Rome and the longest, oldest and best pre-served urban city wall in history. Designed by American architect Richard Meier, the Ara Pacis Museum plays host to an inspiring se-lection of 77 large-format color photographs

erary opens up from the courtyard and winds through the museum rooms, where the play-ful, dreamlike creations born from the sur-realist invention of Piero Fornasetti emerge amongst sculptural figures and Renaissance decorations. Ongoing until September 9.

by Rome-based artist Andrea Jemolo. From the monumental Porta del Popolo to Villa Dominici, to some of the city’s best-pre-served arched gates (Porta Metronia, Porta Latina, Porta San Sebastiano), each snap-shot tells the uniqueness of a piece of history and everyday life. Some stretches of walls still stand out solemn and solitary, others have been incorporated by city life made of palaces, cemeteries, construction sites, workshops and large roads, other sections continually try to repossess the nature, with shrubs, flowers and climbing plants. In some photos taken outside the ramparts visitors can see the different techniques used over the centuries - from clay bricks, to tuff, to marble reuse mate-rials - while others tell the “inside” of the walls, with glimpses of walkways, doors, towers. The history of the Aurelian Walls

PIAZZA DELLA ROTONDA

One of the city’s most iconic tourist landmarks, this square gets its name from the Pantheon’s informal title as the church of Santa Maria Rotonda. Completed by the emperor Hadrian between 118 and 125 AD and still in use as a Catholic church, the “Temple of all Gods” (Pan-all, Theon-gods) was chosen in 1870 as the burial place of the first

kings of Italy. During the 19th century, the piazza was especially noted for its market of fish and fruit sellers.

Mothers needing a little privacy while travelling can now bring their infants into a private nursing room located on the upper level of the Boarding Area E of Terminal 3. The result of a co-opera-tion between Aeroporti di Roma and UNICEF Italia, the “Baby Pit Stop” initiative was cre-ated to provide a peaceful space for moms who wish to nurse or pump in a private and comfortable setting. The project is a respon-se to increasing demand for accessibility improvements, which UNICEF has helped push forward as part of the “Child-Friendly Hospitals and Communities” programme. Equipped with changing tables and ergono-mic chairs, the new lounge forms a keypart of Aeroporti di Roma’s commitment to im-prove service quality, with five additional nursing stations installed throughout the Leonardo da Vinci International Airport.adr.it
