Turning Points

• We’re going to look at some key turning points in the nature, origin and purpose of Crusading over a 100 year period.• You will need to read around these

events as we go through them in order to develop your understanding of how they changed the nature, origin and purpose of Crusading.• The key question for you to answer is

which was the most significant in changing the nature, origin and purpose of Crusading?

Making a judgement…

• How can we define nature, origin and purpose?• What criteria will you be judging

this against?• Consider this for a personal

example (see my example right).• Remember this as you carry out

your reading, you are measuring change over time!

What will we look at?

• The Peoples Crusade • The Formation of the Crusader

States.• The Fall of Jerusalem 1187• The Fall of Acre 1191• There are definitely more out there…• These are down to you to find, it’s

important that you take this coursework in your own direction.• Remember that you’ve only got 2000

words for part B.

Record sheets…

• It’s important that you continue to record the background reading that you do. • I will be reviewing this with some of

you each week and providing feedback etc.• Remember to make sure that you

complete your reading before you start writing….• Don’t go looking for evidence to fit

your argument…carry out the research and then construct your argument!

The Peoples Crusade

The First Crusaders - Asbridge

Great for focusing on how the Peoples Crusade changed the origin of Crusading

Page 6: The formation of the crusader states 2

The Formation of the Crusader States• Have a look at the maps that I’ve

provided.• What do you think they tell us

about:1) How the nature of the Crusades

changed?2) How the origin of the Crusades

changed?3) How the purpose of the Crusades

changed?• Your reading should help you here…

Key questions – for guidance

• These are provided for guidance only, you don’t need to work your way through them (although you could).

• What were the crusader states?• How many were there? How were

they set up? When? Who was in charge etc?• What threats were there to the

Crusader States after their foundation?

• How did these states change the nature and purpose of Crusading (think about new aims, look at Crusade of 1101).• How did these states change the

origin of Crusading? Look at who called the next few crusades – how did they differ (did they?) from the First Crusade.

Next week…

• I’m away Monday – Wednesday…• You need to carry on with your reading and

record it.• Don’t just push this to the back of your ‘to do

pile’ – it will turn into an insurmountable mountain very quickly!

• Try to find at least one other potential turning point if you can.

• If not, read up on at least one of the ones which I have highlighted…

• You must e-mail me what you are attending to achieve next week. Eg. I will research the impact of the Fall of Acre, I will read at least two relevant chapters…

Ooops…

Don’t let this be you after half term – seriously….
