Cavasations

We will be electing our newest class of Deacons in September. This is one of the most important decisions the congregation makes each year, as we rely on our Deacons to provide sound spiritual and administrative leadership. Our Constitution says, “The purpose of the Diaconate shall be to join with and assist the Pastor in ministry to the congregation to become prime examples of the calling of each Christian to ministry. With the ministers, they have particular responsibility for the life of the church, to safeguard its Christian influence, to care for its fellowship, and promote its welfare.” Our Deacons make recommendations about major decisions the congregation faces. They meet monthly to review, discuss, support, and pray for the ministries of the church. They organize to make sure our offerings are collected and cared for properly. Deacons assist with the observances of baptism and communion. The Deacon of the Week assists in worship each Sunday and often works with the ministers to meet pastoral care needs during the week. Our Deacons also organize on occasion to serve communion to our homebound membership. That’s a big job and it requires the selection of people who are willing to engage it with deep commitment.

Ronald S. Cava, Senior Minister

The Bible teaches that deacons should be spiritually mature, honest,

capable of good management, not prone to debilitating habits, have

high morals, a wholesome family life, possess a good reputation in the

community, and be persons of great integrity. (I Timothy 3:8-13 and

Acts 6:3)

Yes, that is a tall order. One might even conclude that none of us is worthy on all counts. Yet, while deacons need not (and cannot) be perfect, they should be striving and growing. So, when it comes time to nominate and then elect deacons, think first of people who demonstrate this character. Resist the lazy ways of only naming friends or people who sit around you each Sunday. Really think and pray about this. I would suggest this filter: who would you choose if you were selecting someone to take responsibility of you or your family? I’m quite certain none of us would make such a decision lightly or without much prayer. Let us do no less in the selection of deacons.

The Unhindered Gospel: Sharing the Good News in Our Troubled World

Pastor Matthew Copple of the First Presbyterian Church will join me

in leading a four-week study on Sunday evenings in October. We will

focus on key passages from The Book of Acts, exploring how these

scriptures can help us share the good news of Jesus with confidence,

authenticity, humility, and hope. Sessions will be in our Fellowship

Hall at 6:00 p.m. and a heavy snack will be provided. We trust you

will join us!

Deacon Nomination/Election September 8 and 15, 11:00AM

DEACON SELECTION PROCEDURE (from FBCH Constitution)

Item 1. The Diaconate shall consist of twenty-four members who have proven themselves to have scriptural qualifications, and who commit themselves to fulfilling the purposes of deaconship as described below. All Deacons shall be at least twenty-one years of age or older and a member of First Baptist for at least two years. Deacons shall be elected for a term of four years, with six being elected each year. After the completion of a four-year term, no deacon shall be eligible for re-election until the lapse of one year. The deacons shall annually elect their own chairman.

The following procedure will be followed in the election of deacons. On September 8, in business session during the hour of the worship service, the membership present at the service will be given a ballot form. The ballot form will show the names of the twenty-four present members of the Diaconate. These individuals are not eligible for nomination because of their present membership on the Diaconate or because of operation of the rotation plan. The ballot will provide space for the members to write in the names of six members of the church who they believe should be elected to the Diaconate. Those twelve names appearing most will be contacted, given the scriptural and practical duties of the office, and given an opportunity to accept or reject nomination. The twelve members whose names appear the greatest number of times on the ballots will be named in alphabetical order on a second ballot, which will be presented to the membership of the church at the morning worship hour on Sunday, September 15. Each member will mark the ballot opposite the name of not more than six of the twelve members the church has nominated. The six members receiving the greatest number of votes on the ballot are elected. ABSENTEE BALLOTS If a member is unable to attend the Worship service on September 8, he or she may complete an absentee nomination ballot located in the Church Office from Friday, August 23 to Friday, September 6 during office hours only: Monday-Thursday, 9am-5:30pm and Friday, 9am-Noon (closed Labor Day).

If a member is unable to attend the Worship service on September 15, he or she may complete an absentee election ballot located in the Church Office from Tuesday, September 10 to Friday, September 13 during office hours only.
