Let’s celebrate our Scripps Summer Program Winners Lauron Lewis, Tyjae Johnson, Kyla Harmon, Taylor Lovett, and Dalen Bailey Scripps College Academy (SCA) Scholars is an intensive, multi-year, pre-college program for high- achieving young women with limited resources who seek to become the first generation in their families to attend college. Through a rigorous summer residential experience followed by monthly programming throughout high school, SCA Scholars develop the confidence and skills to be well-

prepared college applicants, successful college students, and professionals who create positive, lasting change.

Summer Residential Program SCA Scholars begin by attending the two-week Summer Residential Program which provides the opportunity to experience what it is like to live among their peers and study at a private, liberal arts institution. For many SCA Scholars, this is their first time on a college campus and their first experience living away from home. Students further their academic preparation by exploring issues of race, class, and gender through an interdisciplinary academic curriculum. Participants develop their writing, critical analysis, discussion, and presentation skills under the guidance of Scripps College professors, staff, and undergraduate mentors. In addition to the academic program, scholars attend fun and informative workshops, field trips, and participate in recreational athletic or art activities.

Scholarship

$1,000 Scholarships - UCLA Fall 2014

Provided by the Neil Armstrong Scholarship Program ! The Neil Armstrong Scholarship Program is continuing its quarterly program of awarding individual general purpose scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each to UCLA undergraduate men. The Neil Armstrong Scholarship Program was begun in the Fall Quarter of academic year 2011-2012 and is now entering its fourth year awarding scholarships to UCLA undergraduate men. To be considered for the scholarship in Fall 2014, an applicant must: • Be male • Attend UCLA • Have demonstrated leadership capacity • Apply by June 1st, 2014 At whom are these scholarships aimed? For this coming Fall Quarter, we would like to emphasize awards to incoming freshmen and incoming transfer students, although all undergraduate men are eligible for consideration. Applications are being accepted now for this series of individual $1,000 scholarships. Awards will be made at an awards dinner expected to be held at the end of Academic Week 3 in October. Personal interviews of qualified applicants are being conducted currently, will continue throughout the summer, and will continue in September as more men arrive on campus for the Fall. How do we evaluate applicants? These personal interviews of qualified applicants, lasting approximately 30 minutes, are conducted on or near the UCLA campus. Emphasis during interviews will be placed upon the applicant’s desire to continue learning both in the classroom and outside the classroom in the building of his own future. The most qualified applicants are men who are working to become the greatest versions of themselves – men who have the desire to continue to develop individually and to contribute to the continuing growth and future of the UCLA community. Applicants for The Neil Armstrong Scholarship Program will be evaluated based upon a combination of academic performance, involvement in UCLA student organizations, and other high school or community college activities (including athletics, service related activities, tutor positions, student government, other student organizations, etc.). Applications should be submitted online using www.#nyurl.com/ca-‐gamma.
