The Fifteenth Sunday After Pentecost

August 27-29, 2016

Equipping and Sending God’s People to

Make a Christ-Like Difference in the World!

As We Gather—The Bible tells us that endurance transmutes the hardest trial into glory, because beyond the pain, it sees Jesus’ absolute commitment to us. Do you have someone in your life whose presence helps you encounter and endure through the dif-ficulties and challenges of everyday existence? You do when you have Jesus Christ! Come See that He is an ever-present, omnipo-tent, all-loving companion in the good times as well as all the unbearable things we are called upon to bear. Come See the One Who will never leave you nor forsake you!

Welcome to Holy Cross.

Thank you for choosing to worship with us today! We pray that you will encounter Christ, the Living Word, and in a new way experience His mercy and grace today. Holy Cross is a place that can change lives through the power of the cross. Worship allows you to sing and pray in the language of your heart as God’s truth is expressed, His gifts are received, and lives are transformed. Mission outreach opportunities both at home and around the world abound through actual presence or prayer and/or financial sup-port. A growing commitment and practice of equipping the home to be God’s powerful tool for forming and transmitting faith along with our Christian day school of recog-nized excellence committed to inculcating a Christian worldview help us, with your participation, to make a Christ-like difference in the world.

We are a congregation and people on a journey— thankful for what God has done in and through us, excited as we respond to Him in worship and in our daily lives this next week. Whether it is for a lifetime or a short season, we welcome you to join us on this journey.

Lord God, You have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out in good cour-age, not knowing where we go, but only that Your hand is leading us and Your love is supporting us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

If you are a guest or visitor, please fill out the white Guest Card in the pocket of the friendship pads, which will be passed during the service.

Nursery (0-4 years old) is located next to the Welcome Center, in the newly created preschool classroom.

Kidwise Program: There is no Kidwise from Memorial Day weekend through Labor

Scripture Readings

Hebrews 13:1–8

Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for

thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember those who are in pris-

on, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are

in the body. Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be

undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. Keep your life

free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will

never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my help-

er; I will not fear; what can man do to me?” Remember your leaders, those who

spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate

their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Luke 14:7–14

Now He [Jesus] told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how

they chose the places of honor, saying to them, “When you are invited by someone

to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distin-

guished than you be invited by him, and he who invited you both will come and say

to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take

the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that

when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will

be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. For everyone who ex-

alts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” He said

also to the man who had invited him, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not

invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they

also invite you in return and you be repaid. But when you give a feast, invite the

poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, because they cannot

repay you. You will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”

Sermon Notes

“Come See...The One Who Will Never Leave You nor Forsake You!” (Hebrews 13:5)

1. What have we learned so far from the Letter to the Hebrews?

God invites us to Come See His Son Jesus Christ who is ______________

___________________ whatever would distract or discourage us in life.

With our eyes fixed on Him, we have ______________________ to face life’s

challenges.

God invites us to Come See that what we really want is the unshakea-

ble foundation of _______________ _________________ in our lives. Without

lives built upon that foundation, we can live out our calling in this

world through a powerful pattern of ____________________ and

__________________.

2. Today God invites us to Come See in Hebrews 13:5 by using a communica-

tion strategy that will help us remember a great truth. What is that strate-

gy? What word does it involve?

3. Come See that God promises to remain close to us. In fact, He sees us in

two special ways. What are they?

4. Why is it essential that we Come See as CHRISTians?

Stephen Ministry: Want more Freedom and Joy? Did you know that there is joy

and freedom when we put the needs of others ahead of our own? Stephen Ministry

provides this kind of care, freedom, and joy. If you’ve ever thought about finding

ways to bring Christ’s love to those who are hurting, you need to learn more about

Stephen Ministry. We will be having information sessions on Saturday, September

17th after the 5:00 p.m. service and Sunday, September 18th between services. Fol-

low the signs to the pre-school classroom and find out more about sharing your

God-given talents with Stephen Ministry.

Lutheran SGO: Please generously support our SGO scholarships to help Holy Cross

students, who otherwise could not afford it, obtain a Christian education. Donors

will earn up to a 50% state tax credit on gifts made

through the Lutheran Scholarship Granting Organization

of Indiana—but only if they hurry. SGO Credits are go-

ing quickly. As of August 5th, over $2.1 million in cred-

its are gone, or nearly 23% of available credits in less

than 10% of the fiscal year. (For comparison, we were

at this level of credits gone in mid-October last fiscal year.) To learn more visit Lu-

theranSGO.org/donate or call 260-203-4509.
