APOSTOLIC GREETING

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Let us pray, silence God of heaven and earth, before the foundation of the universe and the beginning of time you are the triune God: Author of creation, eternal Word of salvation, life-giving Spirit of wis-dom. Guide us to all truth by your Spirit, that we may proclaim all that Christ has revealed and rejoice in the glory he shares with us. Glory and praise to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

FIRST LESSON Genesis 1-2:4a

At the beginning of time, God the Creator, God the powerful Word, and God the life-giving Spirit form the earth and all its inhabitants. God sees that all this created work is good and then rests on the sev-enth day.

A reading from the book of Genesis. The lesson is read The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 8

O LORD our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!— 2you whose glory is chanted above the heavens out of the mouths of infants and children; you have set up a fortress against your enemies, to silence the foe and avenger. 3When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars you have set in their courses, 4what are mere mortals that you should be mindful of them, human beings that you should care for them? R 5Yet you have made them little less than divine; with glory and hon- or you crown them. 6You have made them rule over the works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet: 7all flocks and cattle, even the wild beasts of the field, 8the birds of the air, the fish of the sea, and whatever passes along the paths of the sea. 9O LORD our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! SECOND LESSON 2 Corinthians 13:11-13

Paul closes a challenging letter to the Corinthians with an appeal to Christian fellowship grounded in the triune harmony of Christ’s grace, God’s love, and the Spirit’s partnership.

[Paul writes:] 11Finally, brothers and sisters, farewell. Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. 12Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you. 13The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL Matthew 28:16-20 After his resurrection, Jesus summons his remaining disciples and commissions them to baptize and teach all nations in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

16Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

HOMILY Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Today’s sermon from Bishop Eaton is offered for all congregations to share today.

HYMN

NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen. SPECIAL MUSIC The Quiet Heart Thomas Keesecker

PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

Called into unity with one another and the whole creation, let us pray for our shared world.

A brief silence.

God of community, you form us as your church. We give you thanks for all leaders of the church, especially for Bishop Elizabeth Eaton and Bishop Don Kreiss, and for all who serve in the ELCA. Guide them, along with all pastors, deacons, and all the baptized in sharing your life-giving good news with all the world. Strengthen us to be bold in our proclamation. Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer. God of counsel, all authority belongs to you. Encourage the leaders of this and every land to seek peace, equality, and unity. Instill wisdom in advocates who work toward justice in often ignored communities. Use our voices to speak on behalf of those who do not have a voice, and to stand with those who face difficult circumstances because of their ethnicity. Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer. We pray today especially for Genesis Lutheran Church in Detroit and all of the Detroit church-es whose life together is significantly hampered and who are unlikely to be able to gather for worship until much later in the summer. By your Spirit, draw the people of these congregations together that their communities may remain strong, and draw us together with them to share the burden of our sisters and brothers in our synod. Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer. God of care, you created us in your image. Help us see your likeness in one another. Open our eyes to see and attend to all who face oppression and suffering. Console, heal, and nourish all in need, especially those we name silently or aloud … Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer. God of companionship, you accompany this body of faith. As the rhythms of summer begin, and as stay at home orders are lifted, protect all who travel, renew all who will enjoy a time of sabbath, and shelter all who will not be protected from the sun’s heat. Strengthen Saint James and all faith communities to work in unity of heart and mission, knowing that we are one body in you. Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer. God of compassion, you comfort us in our grief with the promise of the resurrection. We give you thanks for the saints of all time and in our lives; let their witness of faith teach us to be dis-ciples with hearts for the gospel. Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer. Receive these prayers, O God, and those too deep for words; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
