The Easter break offers us all an opportunity to stop and draw breath after the pulsating pace of the
start to the year. No doubt Easter buns and chocolate eggs will feature heavily in the diets of many
families during this period. However, with the opportunity to halt the pace of the regular routine, the
Easter break affords precious time for us to reflect. It is a time for us to think about “ultimate things”
and not to simply be cluttered with consumerism and distractions.
As a Prep School we will gather together next Thursday afternoon at 1:45pm before the Easter break
to reflect on the message of forgiveness, atonement, hope and the grace of God as displayed in His
masterful rescue plan for our lives. Parents are most welcome to join us for the chapel service in
Horrocks Hall.
The Bible tells us that from the beginning of time God planned to send Jesus into our world to save us
from the punishment of our own rebellion against Him. God knew that the only way to repair that
relationship with Him was through the sacrifice of His own son. What an extraordinary gift!
This message is beautifully captured in the words of a modern day hymn which is one of my
favourites, “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us.”
How deep the Father’s love for us,
How vast beyond all measure,
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss –
The Father turns His face away,
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory.
Behold the man upon a cross,
My sin upon His shoulders;
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
Call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished;
His dying breath has brought me life –
I know that it is finished.
INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE: “Sweet friendships refresh the souls and awaken our hearts with joy.” Proverbs 27:9
Page 2 PREP NEWSLETTER ISSUE 5: 29 March 2019
I will not boast in anything,
No gifts, no power, no wisdom;
But I will boast in Jesus Christ,
His death and resurrection.
Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer;
But this I know with all my heart –
His wounds have paid my ransom.

I wish you a safe, refreshing and meaningful Easter break.
The King’s Prep School plays host to 5,000 visitors The cars arrived in droves and once entering The King’s School gates, were quickly herded into
ordered parking queues. The egg and bacon, and sausage sandwiches were sizzling on the hot plates,
the coffee machines humming and the canteen tills were buzzing with the trade. Such was the activity
on Saturday 6th April as King’s Prep played host to the annual IPSHA Cross Country Championships.
The IPSHA carnival involves representation from independent schools across the Sydney and outer
Sydney region. With the involvement of 1,700 competitors and around 5,000 visitors in all, it was a
major organisational undertaking for the school. The huge success of the day was largely due to the
superb commitment and support of the fathers of the Prep School and the outstanding organisation of
the Prep School Fathers’ Association. Co-ordinating the parking, admission collection, set-up of
marquees, managing the BBQ and canteen facilities, the fathers of the Prep School enabled the
morning programme to run like a well-oiled machine and demonstrated what can be achieved within
a school community when volunteer support and commitment is harnessed. Even the soggy ground
conditions didn’t falter the team as they altered parking plans accordingly so that no cars were left
stranded in mud at the end of the morning.
As Head of the Prep, I was extremely proud of the demonstration of the strong spirit of community
that is such a hallmark of the Prep School. On numerous occasions on the morning, visiting parents,
teachers and Heads of other independent schools passed on their praise and congratulations for
hosting such a large scale event so successfully.
The majority of the logistics for the day were co-ordinated and managed by our tremendous Director
of Sport, Mr Darren Lawrenson. My thanks go to Darren, our fathers who co-ordinated and assisted
in various roles, the staff who assisted in various official capacities and the King’s School grounds
staff for enabling this major athletic event to be such a success and an impressive presentation of the
King’s Prep School community to our visitors. Our boys were well prepared for their races and our
thanks are extended to Chris Xegas and Brett Pickup for assisting the team at early morning training
sessions this term.
The morning saw some outstanding athletic performances. All boys representing the Prep School
performed admirably, pushing themselves to their best performance. Some boys were successful in
reaching the top 15 places in their age category of over 200 participants and will move on to represent
the school at the Combined Independent Schools Championship for all independent schools in NSW
on 13 June. Our congratulations go to the following boys who were successful in reaching selection
for the IPSHA team:
Joseph Saba (11th at IPSHA in the 8/9 year’s boys)
Max Fader (6th at IPSHA in the 10 year’s boys)
William Ford (13th at IPSHA in the 10 year’s boys)

Prep School Entry in the Royal Agricultural Show The Royal Easter Show is almost upon us and there is added excitement amongst the Prep
Agriculture Club. Eight weeks ago the Prep boys took possession of 16, two day old broiler chicks.
Since then, they have been involved in caring for the chicks, helping to raise them for entry into the
Royal Agricultural Meat Birds Pairs Competition. This competition sponsored by Steggles, requires
entrants to feed and fatten birds over a limited timespan with the view for gaining the necessary
weight required for consumption. The birds must reach a minimum weight to be allowed
participation in the final judging process.
The boys have enjoyed raising the birds and learning about their feeding requirements and daily
habits, under the guidance of Prep Agriculture Coordinator, Jordy Wickham. There have been regular
weigh-in sessions where the weights of each bird has been recorded. It’s been a delight to watch the
boys arrive each day and quickly move to the chicken pen to check on the daily progress of the brood.
On Friday, a group of representative students from the Agriculture Club will head to the Royal
Agricultural Pavilion where they will deliver the birds for the final stage of judging. There will be a
feedback session from judges and an education presentation from previous winners of the
competition to help students gain further knowledge of raising chickens for future meat consumption.
It has been a fascinating and valuable experience for the boys involved.
NSWPSSA Swimming Carnival Three boys from the Prep School will be representing our School and the Combined Independent
Schools team at the NSWPSSA Swimming Championships on Wednesday.
We pass on our best wishes to James Napoli, Roy Ma and Joshua Jia as they compete in their races.
There have been many months of hard work invested to reach this level of competition.
Prep Musicians Delight Audiences There have been a number of musical performance events that have occurred over the past two
weeks. The strength of the string program across the school was evidenced with the Kindergarten
Orchestra, Year 1 Orchestra, Year 2 Orchestra, Year 3 Orchestra and Mozart Quartet (Nicholas Wang,
Elliott Biggs, Billy Dacey and Felson Ji) performing recently to parents, grandparents and other
supporters in Horrocks Hall.
Page 5 PREP NEWSLETTER ISSUE 5: 29 March 2019
At a Senior School music evening held in Futter Hall last week some Prep students also showcased
their talents with the Mozart Quartet and a duet featuring Felson Ji and Arthur Jiang performing. On
Friday morning for the same week, our Year 3 Band and Wind Ensemble performed in front of
parents at their very first public performance since beginning with instruments earlier this term.
On Wednesday evening of this week, it was the opportunity for the String Orchestra, Chamber
Orchestra, Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble, Chamber Choir and the King’s Camerata adult choir
to entertain a delighted audience with their talents in Horrocks Hall. The standard of performance
was outstanding, and far beyond what one would expect to find in a primary school setting.
There have been other smaller concerts as well with the vocal students of Ms Cooper performing in a
soiree.
I congratulate all the boys and their music teachers for the hard work that has been invested in
preparing for these events and for the high standard of the performances. I’d particularly like to
herald the praises of our Director of Music, Mr Jonathan Todhunter, our Head of Strings, Mr Trevor
Addison and our Head of Bands, Mr Ben Crocker for their outstanding leadership within the music
programme at the Preparatory School.
Dads Evening at The Cedars – Tuesday 14 May 6:30pm – Save the Date Each year, fathers from the Prep School are invited to an evening at The Cedars, the residence of the
Head of the Prep School and his family. The residence is located next to Kingsbridge and the Year 1 &
2 classrooms.
The evening provides the opportunity for dads to connect for a social time together as well as to hear
a message from a guest speaker. Drinks and canapés are provided for guests on arrival and there is no
charge for the evening as the event is hosted by the Fathers’ Association.
This year, we are fortunate to have the newly elected Chairman of the School Council, Mrs Rosemary
Abrahams joining us for the Dads Evening on Tuesday 14 May. Rosemary has enjoyed an extensive
and broad career in education that has seen her involved in leadership within independent schools in
Australia and various international schools abroad. She became a member of the School Executive in
2013 and her contribution and standing within the Council has seen her election to the prestigious
position of Chairman of the School Council. Rosemary is also a mother and grandmother and will
share her experience of raising her children. The evening also presents as an opportunity to hear
about the strategic directions of the School over the coming triennium.
Finally… I want to wish all our School community an enjoyable holiday break. The boys and staff
have had a long and busy term and are in need of some rejuvenation. I do hope that the time presents
families with an opportunity for additional time together.

NWEA MAP Assessment
This year, we have implemented a whole-school assessment program called MAP Growth. We know
that children learn better when teachers have a clear picture of what each student knows and is ready
to learn next. Developing this understanding of each student’s learning needs is behind this
assessment program. Developed by NWEA, a not-for-profit group of educators in the US, MAP
testing is used by more than nine million students in the US and 140 countries worldwide. This means
the range of normative data is immense and highly reliable.
How it Works
MAP Growth is a series of computer-adaptive tests. If your child answers a question correctly, the
next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. This type of
assessment challenges top performers without overwhelming students whose skills are below grade
level. It ensures we aren’t stopping testing before a student shows the range of what they know. MAP
tests are done entirely online and will be administered three to four times a year for all of our students
in Kindergarten to Year 6.
What it measures
MAP Growth uses a scale called the RIT scale to accurately measure what students know, regardless
of their class level at school. It also measures growth over time, allowing us to track progress across
years of schooling. RIT scores have the same meaning across year levels, which means that if a Year 1
student and a Year 3 student have the same RIT score in reading, they are testing at the same level in
that area.
How we will use the data
Along with a range of other assessments, including formative and summative assessment, we use RIT
scores to inform our teaching and personalise teaching a little more. As a whole school, we will look
at trends over time to see how our boys are progressing. RIT scores will not be used alone for placing
boys in groups or for deciding on rankings; they are a tool we will use to develop a sound picture of
the learning needs of our community. As we see the boys progress along a continuum of learning, we
will be able to create targeted teaching programs that focus on specific skills and learning areas
through a transdisciplinary approach.

ESAFETYPARENTS I commend the directions and information on the eSafety Commissioner website and will bring a fact
sheet to you from time to time in this newsletter. The flyer attached below this week gives clear
directions on the issue of smartphones and children. It is important that parents note the mobile
phone usage agreement they signed states that any device brought to school must have a net filter.

EASTER Families are encouraged to discuss the symbols and rituals associated with Easter from both a cultural
and a faith based perspective. Why do we have Easter eggs? What about the Easter Bunny, Easter
chickens, Hot Cross buns, baskets of goodies? So what is Easter? Given we are about to have a lovely
long weekend, this is a pretty good question for all of us to ask.
The importance of providing our children with a significant and secure future is of concern for every
parent. I wonder how many parents consider the importance of spiritual health. Humans are created
with a soul and that soul needs nourishing; just the same as our bodies require fresh food and water,
our souls thirst for comfort and for strength.
This is why I love teaching Biblical Studies. I enjoy talking with the boys about my eternal security
through a relationship with Jesus. Easter is a significant time on the Christian calendar when we
reflect on the ultimate sacrifice made for us.
Over the coming long weekend, I encourage families to connect with the cultural fun of Easter and
use this as a springboard to explain the real reason for the season. As parents and educators we aim to
provide our children with security and safety. What better security can one have than the spiritual
wellbeing of the knowledge that they are loved completely by our great God who came to earth as a
sacrifice for our sins.
May all families have a safe and blessed Easter season.

Is Easter just for kids?
It can be easy to think that Jesus’ resurrection is another
made up Easter story for children that’s thrown into the
mythological mix along with fluffy rabbits and colourful
eggs. This can have adults asking, is it true that Jesus rose
from the dead? To answer that, I say a resounding yes! But
don’t take my word for it, inquire for yourself, as Christians
have been doing for centuries.
By my calculations, this year is the 1,989th Easter since 7 April AD 30, which is widely accepted
among historians as the date for the crucifixion of Jesus. So Christians have been thinking about this
event for a long time. During this time we’ve faced textual, historical, and philosophical scrutiny and
as a result the church has left a sophisticated trail of intellectual reasons for believing the resurrection
of Jesus.
These reasons were mentioned a few years ago in an article in the Sydney Morning Herald by
historian Dr John Dickson, called Top 10 tips for Atheists this Easter.
In the article, Dr Dickson cited the church's intellectual tradition by quoting such giants of Western
thought as Origen, Augustine and Aquinas. He claimed that if we weren’t familiar with these authors
and still assert that Jesus resurrection was a myth then we can sound a bit like a ‘kid in an English’
class who says, "Miss, Shakespeare is stupid!"
But if you want a little modern literature on the subject, jump on to Goodreads and download one of
the following modern classics:
● The Resurrection of the Son of God by N.T. Wright
● Jesus and the Eyewitnesses: The Gospels as Eyewitness Testimony by Richard Bauckham
● The Historical Reliability of the Gospels by Craig L. Blomberg
● The New Testament Documents: Are They Reliable? by F.F. Bruce
If you prefer to discuss your questions with someone, head to a local Anglican church over the break
and chat to the minister (a great source of information about this). We even have some services at the
school that your whole family could come and be a part of that will be conducted by Rev Matthew
Pickering. Alternatively, feel free to give me a call.
This event is too important to be dismissed as just another fable for infants. We all need to think
carefully about what the resurrection means and there’s a great deal of resources to help.
May you and your family have a very blessed Easter break.
But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by
believing you may have life in his name. John 20:31

Our Year 6 Ag boys have worked really hard over the past 7 weeks preparing our Steggles chickens
for the Royal Easter Show. Not only have they been in with the chickens each day, feeding and
watering them, but they have had to collect and collate data as part of the Project Component.
Students have created a PowerPoint presentation detailing how the chickens were raised and
prepared for the Show and this will be submitted as part of the overall competition.
If you would like to visit the Show and support The King’s Prep boys in this competition, the first day
offers an education session on Friday 12 April 2019 from 12:30-2:00pm. The Program will take place
on the Steggles Stage and includes:
- Judges feedback on the Meat Birds and the Competition
- Judges Feedback on the Competition Projects
- Feedback from Megan Atkinson, Elderslie High School, multi award winners in the
Competition
- Feeding and Husbandry of Meat Birds from Steggles Veterinarian and Judges.
I would like to thank all the boys who have contributed to this project, giving up their lunchtimes to
care for these birds.

Interschool Chess Challenge A team of 15 Year 5 and 6 boys competed in the Sydney Academy of Chess Interschool challenge this
week. There were 145 individual competitors from 19 schools vying for one of 3 school places in the
Semi-finals.
I was immensely proud of the boys in the way they played and also with their behaviour. They were
wonderful ambassadors for our school.
Congratulations to the following boys whose scores were added together to arrive at our School score.
Their outstanding performance amongst skilled competitors enabled the School to gain 2nd place only
missing a tie with 1st place by just 0.5!
6th place overall Meng Xi Yang winning 6 out of 7
games
8th place Ricky Wang 5.5 out of 7
14th place Roy Ma 5 out of 7
18th place Derek Zhang 5 out of 7

Other notable performances, but just missing out on a
place in the semis were:
21st place Ryan Rahimi 5 out of 7
26th place Connor Andrew 5 out of 7.
These results are encouraging as we head into the

Embracing Change
‘Change’ is one of the key PYP concepts that we encourage our Prep boys to embrace. We discuss
with them that change can sometimes cause anxiety and the fear of failure. We urge the boys to see
change as something exciting that will help them to grow and develop into amazing Kingsmen.
Over the last 9 months, I have had to practise what I have preached for the last 9 years of teaching
PYP at the Prep. It was an emotional time for me to leave the classroom, the fun of House meetings
and the camaraderie of the Snow Family.
With my new role as the Regional & Preparatory Registrar of TKS, not only have I become more
familiar with the map of NSW, but I have really enjoyed meeting many new families and telling them
stories about you. So thank you to the many wonderful King’s Prep and Tudor families that I have
had the pleasure of knowing over many years. You have given me the confidence and many great
memories to share with others who are considering following in your footsteps.
I often think, would the Zou or Dunn family be happy like the McDonald family in our special world.
I also wonder whether our current King’s Prep and Tudor families might know of some families
interested in joining our School. We have some Year 5 places that I am currently interviewing for
2020. We are also considering applications for 2021 and beyond. I would appreciate hearing from you
about any family that you think would love us as much as we would love them! Whether it is for next
year or years beyond. See, I have transitioned well from Teacher to Marketing!
One thing that hasn’t changed is that I still love seeing the happy boys, girls, families and teachers
around our Schools. I believe that we are all so blessed to be a part of a unique community and family
who encourage, share and show great kindness to one another.
Please feel free to contact Nikki Duke or myself via
