Prelude: Maiden Voyage—Herbie Hancock

Processional Hymn: God Comes to us as One Unknown—Repton

1 God comes to us as one unknown,

a breath unseen, unheard; as though within a heart of stone, or shriveled seed in darkness sown, a pulse of being stirred, a pulse of being stirred.

2 God comes when souls in silence lie

and thoughts of day depart, half-seen upon the inward eye, a falling star across the sky of night within the heart, of night within the heart.

3 God comes to us in sound of seas,

the ocean's fume and foam; yet small and still upon the breeze, a wind that stirs the tops of trees, a voice to call us home, a voice to call us home.

4 God comes in truth when faith is grown; believed, obeyed, adored:

the Christ in all the scriptures shown, as yet unseen, but not unknown,

our Savior, and our Lord, our Savior, and our Lord.

THE WORD OF GOD

The First Lesson (Jeremiah 31:31-34) Lector: Mr. James V. Rissler Reader A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah. The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a cov-enant that they broke, though I was their husband,* says the LORD. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, ‘Know the LORD’, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

The Psalm (32)

8 You are my hiding-place; you preserve me from trouble; *

you surround me with shouts of deliverance.

9 “I will instruct you and teach you in the way that you should go; *

I will guide you with my eye.

10 Do not be like horse or mule, which have no understanding; *

who must be fitted with bit and bridle, or else they will not stay near you.”

11 Great are the tribulations of the wicked; *

but mercy embraces those who trust in the Lord.

12 Be glad, you righteous, and rejoice in the Lord; *

shout for joy, all who are true of heart.

The Epistle (II Corinthians 5:17-18) Lector: Mrs. Glenna Hileman

If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, eve-rything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Presentation Hymn—Old 100th

From all that dwell below the skies let the Creator’s praise arise! Let the Redeemer’s Name be sung through every land, by every tongue! Eternal are thy mercies, Lord, and truth eternal is thy word, thy praise shall sound from shore to shore till suns shall rise and set no more. Proclaim again that God is good, whose mercy is forever sure, Whose truth at all times firmly stood, and shall from age to age endure. Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts.

People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Here a Proper Preface is sung or said.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Celebrant and People

The people stand or kneel. Then the Celebrant continues Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to rec-oncile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remem-brance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues

8

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer

Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

The Breaking of the Bread

The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread.

Celebrant: Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.

People: Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Celebrant The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

The ministers receive the Sacrament in both kinds, and then immediately deliver it to the people.

The Bread and the Cup are given to the communicants with these words: The Body of Christ, the bread of heaven. Amen. The Blood of Christ, the cup of salvation. Amen.

About Today’s Music The Rev. Andrew K. Barnett, Ann Phelps, and William Cleary are founding members of the Theodi-cy Jazz Collective. As Ensemble in Residence at Washington National Cathedral, the group is com-mitted to ministry through the creative, spiritual power of music. With a unique sound influenced by traditional hymns, jazz, gospel music, and global song, Theodicy was founded at the Oberlin Conservatory, and shaped at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. The ensemble has performed broadly across the United States and England, including a commissioned jazz mass for Canterbury Cathedral. This music is a constant prayer, sometimes a cry of joy, sometimes a shout for action, sometimes a deep, silent hope. www.theodicyjazz.com
