Concept Units

• Pupils will focus on the formal study of language. (e.g. history of language, word origins etc)

• Pupils will be exposed to a variety of text forms

• Pupils will learn to appreciate how language features change as a result of the change in context, purpose and audience

Extensive Reading Programme (ERP)

• 3-year (P4-6) individual reading programme Seeks to expose pupils to specially chosen literature and reading projects

• 2 ERP assignments (1 for each semester) to help pupils respond cognitively, emotionally and imaginatively to texts

Literature-based Unit

• Pupils will learn to analyse and interpret texts through structured questions and activities

• Study of plot, themes, concepts, characterization, literary elements

• Make connections between self and text

• Make connections between text and the world

Objectives:

• Provide regular and constructive feedback to pupils so as to help them to develop and internalise the language and language related skills

• Monitor pupils’ progress in a fair and reliable manner that takes into account their efforts to improve themselves

• Past records show that the Portfolio Assessment (PA) has helped many pupils to do better in the subject than the time-based pen and paper tests as:

(1) the PA assignments require them to put in consistent effort on a regular basis

(2) the PA documents the BEST pieces of work completed by the pupils

Baseline Mark for P4 GEP EL

70% • baseline mark helps teachers to see if the pupils are able

to cope in the subject • applied to the overall mark only at the end of the P4 year

• No textbook in EL (5-part blue EL file)

• Printed worksheets for the different components in EL e.g. Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading etc

• Pupils are required to file their worksheets regularly (Please help by checking occasionally)

• Miscellaneous file (In/Out sections)

• Student Diary

Organisational Skills

Support for pupils • Due to the heterogeneous profile of the GEP

pupils, they may have different needs in different areas.

• Teachers will identify pupils who need help in specific areas in EL and provide the necessary guidance.
