dear colleagues,

once again it is my pleasure to extend a very warm invitation to you to attend the annual powEr-GEn Europe and renewable Energy world Europe conference and exhibition and to ask you to take a few moments to peruse the following pages, in order to get a flavour of the exciting things that are in store when we all meet in amsterdam, 9-11 June.

The combined powEr-GEn and renewable Energy world events form Europe’s largest annual conference-led exhibition, and have been connecting power generation professionals for the past 23 years. we are proud to host an event that promotes knowledge-sharing, excellence and business opportunities across the full spectrum of the power generation sector. if you are a regular attendee, you probably already have the dates marked in your calendar, so why not register now and take advantage of early-bird delegate rates.

There is an air of excitement and a little trepidation surrounding this coming powEr-GEn Europe and renewable Energy world Europe. of course, we are all aware that our industry is changing and it is the recognition of the many facets of these changes that has become the theme of the event this year. The power industry’s history is steeped in engineering expertise, which has always risen to past challenges. now, this experience of the past must inspire the next generation of innovators to create the solutions that will maintain Europe’s leading position in the provision of reliable, sustainable and universal electricity supply.

our 2015 conference programme offers content relevant to the issues vexing us all today. it reflects this positive approach, offering new strategic and technical solutions to the key issues of workable policy and regulation, decarbonisation, flexible generation and cleaner operating coal plants among others. There are new sessions under the heading of urban Energy integration, reflecting a range of topics around decentralised energy and the exciting activities of municipalities in the energy sphere. Further sessions within the conference matrix look at grid support and renewables integration, achieving greater operation excellence and efficiency together with utility-scale renewable policy, finance and project development.

among the many highlights of this year’s event will be our opening Keynote session and we are delighted that the Executive director of the international Energy agency, maria van der hoeven will be among our keynote speakers. we also welcome back international broadcaster stephen sackur to moderate a debate among power sector experts entitled, “European Energy Transition – Embracing the opportunity of change”.

outside of the conference arena, the rai exhibition halls will be full of power engineering products and services companies, creating the ideal marketplace to discover new technologies and plant operation equipment. Every day at powEr-GEn Europe and renewable Energy world Europe will offer amazing networking opportunities both on the show floor and in the surrounding conference.

The exhibitor list and conference programme will be regularly updated on the event websites, where you will be able to find out more about technical tours, the new projects of the year awards, European confidence index and the best paper awards. do bookmark and check the websites regularly so you can make the most of your visit to amsterdam.

powEr-GEn Europe and renewable Energy world Europe opens its doors wide to power industry experts who want to embrace change, pursue excellence and whose entrepreneurial drive and technical innovation will ensure that the emerging opportunities in our industry are developed to the full. as Europe moves closer to its vision of an Energy union, with closer co-operation and stronger interconnections, the value of an annual meeting place for practitioners to voice their opinions and introduce a practical perspective into the debate, is ever more important.

Join us in amsterdam 9-11 June and ensure you are influencing Europe’s changing energy future.

start your visit to powEr-GEn Europe and renewable Energy world Europe by joining your fellow power industry professionals at the scene-setting joint opening keynote session. hosted by: nigel blackaby, director of conferences at pennwell international’s power Group.

Speakers:maria van der hoeven, Executive Director of the international Energy agency in France.

over the next few weeks we will be bringing you news of additional keynote participants. please visit www.powergeneurope.com for the latest information.

European Energy transition – Embracing the Opportunity of Changemoderator: stephen sackur, international Journalist and TV presenter, uK

This year’s panel topic develops the overall joint theme of powEr-GEn Europe and renewable Energy world Europe and looks at how power industry professionals can grasp the opportunities emerging out of the fundamental transition occurring in the power sector across Europe.

an expert panel representing a broad spectrum of interest within the industry will be asked to share their vision as to how the market is likely to develop and bring some clarity to a sometimes opaque future for certain types of power generation. The debate will look at the changing roles of centralized power and the growth of localized generation and the opportunities that will arise from this.

Panelists:• MarkGarnett, vice President european region, doosan Power systems, uK

• StephanSinger, director Global energy Policy, WWF International, Belgium

• HanstenBerge,secretary General, eurelectric, Belgium

• DamianWagner,Project coordinator - triangulum Project, Fraunhofer, Germany

additional panelists will be invited to speculate on how apparent policy conflicts between brussels and Eu member states are likely to be resolved, which technologies are most likely to prevail and how market players can best position themselves to lead and succeed in Europe’s energy future.

Piston Engines – Fast and versatile Power to Balance renewable EnergyFollowing last year’s successful cimac circle at powEr-GEn Europe another panel discussion is planned for this year. The discussion will focus on the topic ‘piston engines - fast and versatile power to balance renewable energy’.

as a result of large-scale introduction of renewable electricity sources, the energy sector is faced with fundamental changes. due to the intermittency of the output of wind turbines and solar panels the traditional steady base load for power plants is disappearing; instead, frequent starts and stops are required. moreover, a full back-up power to the renewable sources is necessary because of the uncertainty of their output. piston engines in single cycle and combined cycle applications can offer this flexibility at minimum costs.

This cimac circle provides a discussion with major engine manufacturers on the challenges for the industry and the advantages of the engine-driven solutions. The panel is chaired by Patrick Frigge from GE Power & Water.

The presentation of the conference best paper awards, delegate survey prize draw for an apple ipad and closing reception for all participants of powEr-GEn Europe and its sister event renewable Energy world Europe will begin at 15:00 on Thursday 11 June.

The ever popular best paper awards will be presented for the powEr-GEn Europe and renewable Energy world Europe conferences. Judges from the expert conference advisory boards will choose a best paper award winner from each of the conference themes with the judging criteria based on outstanding concept and content.

There will also be two highly commended papers in each category. winners of these prestigious awards are recognized by the industry as being the ‘best of the best’ and we wish all eligible speakers the very best of luck.

all attendees can enter a prize draw for an apple ipad by completing a survey form during the course of the event and being present at the time of the draw during the closing reception.

2015 Peabody Energy aEFl Clean Coal awardscoal fuels more than 40 per cent of global electricity, more than any other fuel. it has been the world’s fastest-growing major fuel source over the past decade and is set to surpass oil as the world’s largest global energy source in coming years. peabody Energy is the world’s largest private-sector coal company and a global leader in sustainable mining, energy access and clean coal solutions. peabody is proud to sponsor the advanced Energy for life (aEFl) clean coal awards for Europe, recognizing the best environmental performance achieved among the European coal fleet, based on key emission and efficiency rates. The awards recognize leadership in deploying advanced coal technologies that deliver ultra-low emissions. Globally, one new 500 mw coal plant is being brought on line every three days, and the majority of this power is being developed as high- efficiency supercritical generation that delivers low emissions. as the world continues to use more coal, broad deployment of supercritical technology with advanced controls – available and in use today – should be the global standard. 2014 was the inaugural year for the Global awards, hosted at the powEr-GEn international conference in orlando, Florida, u.s., recognizing three major u.s. coal-fueled power plants. This year, peabody Energy wishes to recognize the “cleanest” coal plants, in 5 global geographies including: india, Europe, Eastern asia (excluding china) and north america. The winners of the European awards in 2015 will be recognized at the powEr-GEn Europe Gala dinner on the evening of June 9 at the maritime museum, amsterdam.

The inaugral aEFl clean coal awards were held at powEr-GEn international
