Review by Miganl. Lego 80103, the Dragon Boat Race
The Chinese New Year sets originally released for just the Asia Pacific audience became easily one of the hottest topics of discussion in the LEGO world earlier this year - or more specifically, the limited distribution of those sets!
After that ensuing outcry, LEGO announced that starting with the third set targeted for the Asia Pacific region, the distribution for regional sets would be much broader, with 80103 sets scheduled to be available in Europe and in the U.S. around June 2019
Prior to LEGO's announcement, I made arrangements to get 80103 from Australia (thanks to helpful Brickset member). Read on to see if it's worth getting when it comes to a store near you.
The box is decorated similarly to the Chinese New Year sets, with the gold seal on the top front right of the box indicating that this set is celebrating the dragon boat festival and part of the Chinese Festival Special Edition series.
The box art shows the dragon boat race action - the front depicts the race underway while the back shows the red dragon team accepting the winner’s trophy as well as insets illustrating other features of the set. Inside the box there are five numbered bags, a perfect bound instruction book and a medium sized sticker sheet.
MINIFIGS. There are an impressive fifteen minifigures in this set. Ten of them are the members of the two dragon boat teams. Both teams have new torsos and legs to this set.
The red team is outfitted in white sleeveless shirts with red piping and black frog closures, tied with a bright red sash. Their legs are red and I particularly like the printing at the top of the legs showing the bottom of the shirt and the remainder of the tied sash in the team colour.
The minifigs have a variety of expressions - some, but not all of them have two sided heads. In this picture they’re shown (left to right) from the back of the boat to the front. The minifig on the right is the drummer who sets the pace for the paddlers The printing continues on the back of the minifig and shows some nice detail.
The green team has similarly gorgeous printing. Their shirts are orange, with green piping, frog closures, and sash. The legs for these minifigs are printed similar to the red team showing the sash in the team’s colour. Again, some, but not all of them have two sided heads. I was happy to see that there are ten different minifig heads, although there is a duplication or two in the hairstyles
A very formal looking bespectacled gentleman in a black suit and tie looks like he must be the official for the race. He looks suitably distinguished with the grey piping on his suit, complete with a white kerchief. A vendor for the food stand wears a sand blue tunic with dark blue shirt underneath. The printing continues on the legs for the lower part of the tunic and
sash. He wears dark brown pants, and I particularly like his sandals. His look is topped off with a conical hat.
There are quite a few parts in new colours, The parts usage is terrific, and those zongzi pieces might just be my favourite new LEGO piece. The dragon boats move smoothly and allow for a lot of play. The set allow for a lot of storytelling from the race to the spectators to the food vendor. It’s a terrific display piece, too.
I think it’s a worthy addition to the Chinese Festival Special Edition series. For the price (49.99 Euro, 44.99 GBP, assuming around $60 US, 643 pieces) it’s a pretty good deal and I feel the set’s good value
MUCH MORE THAN A SPORT – DRAGON BOATING HAS LEGO DRAGONS TOO !

17TH IDBF MEMBERS
CONGRESS, PATTAYA,
THAILAND
Thirty-six (36) IDBF Members were represented at
the 17th
IDBF Congress, held in Pattaya, Thailand,
on 26th
August 2019, following the extremely
successful 14th DBF World Nations
Championships’.
President’s Report. In his
Opening Address and report to
the Congress, the IDBF
President, Mike THOMAS, paid
tribute to Admiral Chainarong and the Rowing and Canoeing Federation of Thailand, for their
huge effort in creating, in just a few weeks, a race site from scratch to enable the World
Championships’ to take place, due to an unexpected lack of water at the scheduled regatta
location, which had led to an enforced change to the racing venue.
The President informed Congress that both the 2018 Club Crew World’s in Szeged Hungary and the 2019 World
Champs in Pattaya, had set new records with the highest number of competitors ever recorded, for such
Championships’. Also in 2018, the live television broadcast of the 3rd World Cup held in Chongqing, in 2018 had
significantly helped to promote our the Sport to the world and he thanked CCTV5 for their support. This year the IDBF
had appointed a paid administrator who is helping to improve IDBF communication and administrative procedures.
The President said that the International Breast
Cancer Paddlers Commission had held their largest
ever event in 2018, in Florence, Italy and that the
International Ice Dragon Boat Federation has
continued to grow this new version of dragon boat
racing with amazing Championships in China and
Canada.
The Continental Federations too had been busy. In
Tobago the Pan American Federation had introduced
a new ocean-going small boat for their Championship;
The European Federation had recently held their
largest Club Crew Championships, in Seville, Spain
and Asian Dragon Boat Federation Countries had
taken part in the Asian Games in Indonesia.
Oceania has continued to develop their Trans-Tasman
series and in Africa the recently formed Egyptian
Federation was seeking to create development in the
Nile Basin.
In May 2019, the International Olympic Committee
(IOC) announced that they would be introducing a
new process for recognition in 2021 and that previous
applications will not be considered. Another hurdle has
been set up and we will need to prepare to ensure we
are ready in 2021 to submit a new application.
The President said that further discussions had
taken place between the IDBF the ICF (International
Canoe Federation) but It had become clear that the
ICF were now trying to take over the Sport in multi-
sports games and are attempting to showcase dragon
boat, as a demonstration, in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The ICF were also trying to take over Dragon
Boating in the next Asian Games in China. IDBF
must support the Chinese Dragon Boat
Association and the ADBF to be the organisers of
Dragon Boat Racing at these Games.
In response to these and other ICF actions, the
President informed the Congress that the IDBF
Executive, with the support of the President of AIMS,
had written a formal complaint to the Global
Association of International Sport Federations (GAISF)
with a copy to the IOC Ethics Committee.
All have agreed to meet with the IDBF. In such
circumstances to continue to have any discussions
concerning co-operation with the ICF would not be in
the IDBF’s interest. (Note: Congress endorsed this policy).
The President reported that the IDBF had signed a
Memorandum of Understanding with the IOC Olympic
Channel which gives the IDBF Members an
opportunity to showcase the sport to the world.
The IDBF will need to ensure that all future
Championships produce film footage which can be
offered to the Olympic Channel and all members
should consider what they can do in their own
Championships.
In concluding his report, the President said that a
new IDBF strategic plan is nearing completion and that
the Executive Committee and Council were seeking
ways to increase revenue; improving governance and
transparency; developing new policies and ensuring
that our Federation is ready for the challenges ahead.

AIMS Presentation. Before getting down to the
business of the day, the Congress Delegates received
a presentation from Stephan FOX, the President of
AIMS (Alliance of Independent Recognised Members
of Sport), which presently had 18 Member Federations
Mr Fox outlined the objectives and plans of AIMS, as
an organisation and its role as an umbrella group for
all those independent International Federations, who
were not, as yet, recognised as an IOC International
Federation.
Mr FOX stressed that as an AIMS Member, the
IDBF was now part of the ‘Olympic Family’, in a
multi-sports organisation recognised by the IOC, and
that was very important ‘politically’ going forwards, as
the IOC had stated that all AIMS Members would
eventually become recognised IOC Federations’.
AIMS was one of four partner organisations of the
GAISF (Global Association of International Sports
Federations) of which he was a Vice-President
The other partners were the IOC Summer Olympic
Sports, the IOC Olympic Winter Sports and the IOC
Recognised International Federations and so AIMS
was an organisation happy to lose its members to
another GAISF partner !.
Turning to the situation concerning the ICF Mr Fox
assured the Congress that AIMS and GAISF would
totally support the IDBF, as the recognised World
Governing Body for the Sport, to ensure that the ICF
ceased its incursion into Dragon Boating and other
paddle sports, with their own independent International
Federations and that, representation had been made
to the IOC by AIMS/GAISF in this respect.
In closing his presentation Stephan FOX, stressed
how important it was for the IDBF to be fully committed
to the AIMS and for IDBF Members’ to support the
AIMS ‘Youth in Sport’ Festival with Dragon Boat
demonstrations, especially in 2020, when the festival
will be held in Beijing, in conjunction with the AIMS/
GAISF General Meetings and the Sport Accord annual
convention.
Before leaving the Congress Mr Fox paid tribute to
the work done on behalf of the IDBF and Dragon Boat
Sport by both Mike Thomas and Mike MacKeddie-
Haslam (IDBF Founder & Hon President) over the
years before and since, the founding of AIMS, in which
as an AIMS Council Member, Mike MacKeddie-
Haslam had played a key role. He presented both with
an AIMS plaque of congratulations and appreciation
for their dedication to sport.
Financial Report. In his financial report the IDBF Treasurer, Alan van Caubergh, outlined
changes to the classes and term of IDBF Membership, proposed by the IDBF Executive Committee,
which had been agreed by the IDBF Council. After a lengthy discussion on the rationale for such
changes, the Congress ratified the changes and agreed the new membership fees structure.
IDBF Elections. In the election for the IDBF President, contested by the incumbent, Mike
Thomas and Alan van Caubergh the voting was 26 to 10 in favour of Mike Thomas, who was duly
re-elected for a further 4 year term of office.
In the election for the IDBF Treasurer, which followed, Alan van Caubergh, who was opposed by Loretta Lewis
(IDBF Deputy Treasurer), was re-elected for a further 4 year term.
In further elections for Commission Chair-holders, Mel Cantwell was re-elected as the Chair of the Competition &
Technical Commission (C&TC), Bridget Walter was elected as the Chair of the Medical & Sports Science
Commission (M&SSC), Belinda Chung was elected as the Chair of the Marketing & Media Commission (M&MC) and
Mr HE Yi was elected as the Chair of the Culture & Heritage Commission (C&HC).
Commissions and Continental Reports. The Congress received written reports from the IDBF Commissions and
the Continental Federations, as well as proposals from the IDBF Council concerning amendments to the IDBF
Statutes, Bye-Laws, Competition Regulations and Rules of Racing.
Most were passed by the Congress but the proposed changes to the Senior and Junior Racing Classes
(cancel Senior C and Junior B) and restrictions on IDBF Members entering crews in the same Standard and Small
Boat competition classes, at a World Championship, thus restricting the numbers of competitors, in a Championship,
were rejected by the Congress Delegates.
New Members. The IDBF Secretary-General, Peter Tang, notified the Congress that four new applications for IDBF
Membership had been received from Cambodia, Mauritius, Bahrain and Pakistan. These were all approved by the
Congress for IDBF Membership but for Pakistan, this was subject to confirmation of their status and authority
IDBF World Champs 2022 and 2023. Presentations were made by the USA, Hungary and Canada for the 2022 Club
Crew Championships and by Hungary and Spain for the 2023 World Nations Championships. After discussions on the
various merits of the proposed locations the Congress awarded the 2022 Club Crew World Champs to the USA, to
be held in Sarasota, Florida and the 2023 World Nations Champs to Spain, to be held in Seville.

Seville also hosted the 2nd Euro Cup Race, as part of the 18th
EDBF European Club Crew Championships,
organised by the Spanish Dragon Boat Federation. What is EDBF EURO CUP ? A series of primarily festival
races held in European Cities, to which EDBF Members’ crews are invited to compete.
The Euro Cup is designed to encourage Sport Racers to go to primarily to Dragon Boat Festivals and race for points
and medals, whilst also scoring Euro Cup Points for their Country. The Format. The Euro Cup format is not restricted to the Standard Boat but racing the Standard Boat gains the most
points, that is, Premier Standard Boat Races score 100 race place points and downwards, according to the number of
crews in a competition class and a crews final position in that competition class – Prem Open, Women and Mixed
200m, 500m, whilst the Small Boat competitions score 50 points.
The actual Euro Cup Points given, therefore, is a combination of place points and EDBF Member’s bonus points,
which are allocated to the EDBF Members and not their competing crews. The number of EDBF Member crews, per
competition class, that can score points is limited, as is the number of place points scoring ‘Home Crews’ so as not
to advantage hosting Nations. Medals are awarded for each event
In Seville, the race results from the EDBF Club Crew Premier Open, Mixed and Women’s Champs in both the
Standard and Small Boat competitions, determined the Euro Cup Points for Race.2.

“It would not be in the IDBF’s interest to have further discussions with the ICF” “In response to these and other ICF
actions the IDBF Executive Committee had written a formal complaint to the Global Association of International Sport
Federations “ so said the IDBF President, Mike Thomas, at the IDBF Congress held in Pattaya on 26 August 2019..
Important words for the future development of our Sport or just more ‘politics’ I hear you say. Well actually both
and hopefully, on the political front; if the GAISF and IOC are true to the wording and meaning of their respective
constitutions and the ‘Olympic Charter’, they will tell the ICF that Dragon Boating is NOT their paddle sport and to stop
trying to subsume Chinese Dragon Boating but concentrate on their own ethnically different paddle disciplines, of
Canoeing and Kayaking, coming from North America and the Arctic Region.
From the email I recently received, copied below, it is
apparent that maybe how and why the ICF became
involved in our Sport, is being lost or forgotten in the
mists of time. So maybe a history re-cap for Kristof and
others, will help in understanding what led to the IDBF
Congress supporting Mike Thomas’s statement above.
Kristof Erkiletian. Dragonboat Team DNA
You may recall, I'm the person who's been collecting
video from races all around the world to compile into a
documentary on the sport. I now have over 20 countries but
there is also something holding me back.
In gallivanting around the globe to do races, i naively
jumped into extensively covering events run by both
IDBF and ICF without acknowledging there has been an
ongoing grudge between these organizations.
It seems the root of dispute is that the latter
organization claims to have longstanding jurisdiction
over all paddle- sports, while the former organization
(yours) has really done all the work to bring Dragon Boat to
a world class level.
Do you foresee any sort of mutual unification of these
two odds for the greater purpose of furthering the sport,
or will it continue (at least for now) to be run by two
organizations?
I had hoped to release a final edit at a time when there
is full unity. Otherwise I risk unwittingly agitating both
organizations simply by promoting evens held by either.
Even asking about this is something I am nervous about
Thanks again for your help and for your sincere and lifelong
dedication to the world's greatest sport, what a tremendous
honour it was to have you place a bronze medal around my
neck in the recent Worlds in Thailand Kristof
Hi Kristof, First thank you for the kind personal words in
your email. In your email, you say “there has been an
ongoing grudge between the IDBF and ICF and that the
root of the dispute seems to be that the ICF claims it has
a long-standing jurisdiction over all paddle sports”.
You added “do I foresee any sort of mutual unification for
the purpose of furthering the Sport, or will it continue to
be run by two organisations” ?
ICF Jurisdiction. To try and answer your questions , the
first thing to correct is the ICF claim of having “a long
standing jurisdiction over ALL paddle sports”. This is just
not true. In 1996 (5 years after the formation of the
IDBF) Article 1 of the ICF Constitution said:-
“The ICF is an international non-governmental non-profit
world organisation for multidiscipline canoe-kayak activity
of unlimited duration. With a clarifying Bye-Law saying
“The ICF as a multi-sport-organisation consists off all
canoeing activities. particularly: Racing, Slalom, Wild-
water, Marathon, Canoe Sailing, Canoe Polo; Touring”.
By Oct 2004 this clarifying Bye-Law had been changed to - “The ICF as a multi-sport-organisation consists off all canoeing activities. Canoeing means every activity, which a paddler is facing the direction of travel with a single or double
bladed paddle”
By Nov 2006 this Bye-Law said “The ICF as a multi-sport organisation, which consists of all canoeing and paddling activities. The ICF embraces every activity in which a paddler is facing the direction of travel with a single or double bladed paddle”
As a result, ICF Bye-Law 2 was also changed, from the
list of 7 canoe/kayak activities shown in 1996, to the
addition of Dragon Boating in Oct 2004 (Touring was
dropped) and in 2008 Ocean Racing and Canoe
Freestyle. These changes, claiming governance over
all paddle sports (whether the ICF was active in them or
not) were all made well after the IDBF was established.
The IDBF’s status and standing, as the world
governing body for Dragon Boating, was recognised in
2008, when the IDBF was finally admitted into GAISF
Membership, on the basis that the IDBF was not in rivalry
with the ICF and that Dragon Boating and Canoeing were
two different Sports, with distinct and separate cultural
backgrounds.
This was also acknowledged by the IOC and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) also confirmed the IDBF’s status to the ICF in 2008.. So the ICF cannot claim to have any longstanding jurisdiction over all paddle sports and especially not Dragon Boating.
In fact by doing so, the ICF is in breach of both the IOC and GAISFs constitutions.

Mutual Unification ?. Words to conjure with. When the
IDBF was constituted in 1991, the ICF were both aware
and supportive of the IDBF’s formation, as a fellow paddle
sport federation and indeed the then ICF President
(Sergio Orsi) was happy to help the IDBF to establish itself
within the multi-sports world and the Olympic Movement.
During 1998/1999, when the ICF elected a new
President (Ulrich Feldhoff) I wrote to him (as the IDBF
Executive President) suggesting ways in which the ICF
and IDBF might work together, for the mutual benefit and
development of both sports, but as ‘partner paddle sports’.
My suggestions were rejected, as the ICF considered
itself to represent all paddle sports within the IOC and
didn’t want another paddle sport Federation becoming ‘IOC
Recognised’ and maybe in the future becoming a separate
Olympic Games Sport, which in itself would mean having
to share the Olympic Games money with another paddle
sport. Not what the ICF would want. Basically, the ICF
position and view of itself has not changed since
Despite this intransigence, the IDBF continued to try and
work with the ICF, even though by 2000 the ICF were
preparing to set up their own Dragon Boat Commission,
which they did in 2002 and then to run their own Dragon
Boat Championships, the first of which was in 2005..
During this time IDBF tried mediation and then
arbitration with the ICF, through the CAS, which was
unsuccessful but in 2002 the IDBF managed to get the ICF
to the discussion table, which resulted in the 2003 Joint
Agreement signed by myself for the IDBF and Jose
Perurena (ICF Sec-General) who is now the ICF President.
The key points in the Joint Agreement were that the
ICF acknowledged the standing of the IDBF as the
established independent International Federation for
Dragon Boat Sport and the IDBF acknowledged the ICF
as the established International Federation for Canoeing.
The ICF also confirmed that the decision to organise
Dragon Boat Racing, was taken for the purpose of
providing Dragon Boat services only for ICF affiliated
Canoe Federations.
With regard to the IOC, it was proposed that the IDBF and
ICF would jointly explore the question of the formal
recognition by the IOC, of Dragon Boat Racing as a sport
and the IDBF as an IOC International Federation.
Concerning the GAISF, the ICF agreed that they would
not oppose the IDBF application or claim to represent
dragon boating, within the GAISF and where the IWGA:
were concerned, the IDBF as a partner in delivering
Dragon Boat Racing for the 2005 IWGA World Games in
Duisburg, agreed to the ICF representing IDBF interests
up to the end of the 2005 World Games.
In addition, it was agreed that it does not make sense
to have two different World Championships for
Dragon Boat Racing. The ICF proposed and it was
agreed that the best and most effective way to deliver
“Dragon Boat Racing Services” for the ICF members
would be for them to be able to take part in IDBF World
Championship Regattas.
The IDBF side agreed that all National Federations
affiliated to ICF will be invited to take part in the IDBF
World Championships from 2003 onwards and that
Membership within IDBF was open to ICF Members.
Following the signing of the 2003 JA, meetings were
held to put flesh on the bones of the agreement but after
two meetings the ICF side walked out of the discussions
and later declared unilaterally declared that the Joint
Agreement was invalid.
From 2005 until the present day the ICF has involved
itself in our Sport and claimed before the GAISF and the
IOC that the ICF was already the fully recognised world
authority for all paddle sports (as defined by the ICF).
In the past 12 months, the IDBF has again tried to
come to a partnership agreement with the ICF but
unfortunately the ICF still maintains that all paddle sports
must be subservient to the ICF and continues with its
dragon boat programme.
So can there ever be Mutual Unification. Given the
ICF’s past track record in negotiations, its view of its own
standing and importance in the paddle sports world and
the fact that it has never actually been involved in the
development of the modern sport, it seems extremely
unlikely that any ‘unification’ can take place unless,
possibly, the ICF accepts again and stands by the 2003
Joint Agreement and fully accepts the IDBF as the only
recognised world governing body for Dragon Boat Sport.
Run by two organisations ? There are a few sports
where there are two or even more ‘world governing
bodies’, such as professional boxing but as far as I am
aware, there is no Sport where the governing body of one
Sport has tried to involve itself in and take over, a different
Sport. (Dragon Boat and Canoeing are different Sports)
Within the ‘Olympic movement’ there is only one
world governing body for each Sport, including boxing.
So the answer to the question is that ‘legally’ any
organisation can run any and as many sports as it likes
However, in the world of sport and especially the
‘Olympic Family’ the rule is, one Sport, one governing
body and where Dragon Boating is concerned that
recognised and acknowledged body, is the IDBF, certainly
NOT the ICF. I rest my case ! Mike MacKeddie-Haslam

THE POWER OF THE DRAGON – ONE MAN’S QUEST FOR GOLD !
Bob Mina . 21 August at 18:01 ·
I have been racing Dragon Boats for 15 years and have been fortunate to race at the International level for the last decade. I learned early on just how hard it was to make the podium, and how elusive the top step can be.
I was fortunate to win my first Gold in 2013 (Senior A Mixed), and add a second one in 2017 (Premier Open). Through that time I've watched as friends have scored their first, or second, or added to an already incredible stash of medals.
Tommy Leonardi has been a teammate of mine for the last 9 years, but he's been in the sport way longer than that. His DNA runs deep in Philadelphia Dragon Boat, he's been to many, many World Championships. He had a suitcase full of silver for his work BUT NO GOLD.
So after Kunming when Senior B Mixed won Gold and ended team mate Christopher Marquart's 24-year long pursuit, Tommy was the last one of our crew missing a Star Spangled Banner.
He did the work. He bought a HR monitor. He weighed his food. We talked obsessively about HR zones, recovery, and focus. He raced OC1 sprints. He showed up and put in his seat time at practice. He raced all the time trials he needed to, and as the entire Senior B program elevated, he rose with it. His final TT was 14 SECONDS faster than he'd been in 2017.
My biggest regret of not racing Worlds this cycle, was that I wouldn't be there in-person, I would have to watch and wait. I watched the streaming but had to go to bed at midnight...I would have to wait to see the results in the morning. I powered on my phone at 6:50AM. No messages.
I found the IDBF Results page. I scrolled like a squirrel on his 4th espresso until I found SENIOR B OPEN STANDARD... 1. USA 2.Thailand 3. Canada
I blinked. I blinked again. I made DAMN SURE I had the right race. "Senior B Open, Standard Boat, 2km..Senior B Open, Standard Boat, 2km !"
My hands stared shaking. I thought about all my mates in that crew -Jim Morris, Kevin McFadden, Dave Wald, Chris Marquart,
"Did they do it?!" I texted Tommy-
"Please tell me you were in that boat."In 12 seconds he replied with a photo...of a Gold Medal around his neck.
I know I had a lot of friends racing over there; I know this was just one of SEVEN Gold medals won by Team USA on Day 1, but this one,.this one was the one I wanted as much as I've ever wanted one of my own.
Making Team USA is hard. Making the podium is hard.
Losing is the hardest. But winning, winning after a nearly 20-year pursuit, hearing your anthem for the first time, there Mike MacKeddie-Haslam, IDBF Founder & Honorary President
are few moments in sport that will ever be so pure in their joy congratulates and presents Tommy with his first Gold Medal.

The necessary amount of carb depends on the total
type of sport.
For most athletes, 5 to 7 grams of carbohydrate per
kilogram of body weight daily is right for general training. pounds.) Endurance athletes
may need up to 12 grams per kilogram. [See table below)

Dragon Boating. " More than a Sport – a Tradition " 26.
Carbohydrate Loading Risks and Disadvantages
Despite the benefit from carbohydrate loading
increasing endurance performance, this strategy isn't
right for every endurance athlete. It's a good idea to
consult your doctor or a registered dietician, before
starting carbohydrate loading, especially if you have
diabetes. A carbohydrate-loading diet can cause
some discomfort or side effects, such as:
Digestive discomfort. If you find you are having
digestive discomfort, then the advise is to avoid or limit
some high-fibre foods for one or two days before a
competition.
Beans, bran and broccoli can cause gassy cramps,
bloating and loose stools.
Blood sugar changes. Carbohydrate loading can affect
the body’s blood sugar levels. It is necessary those with
diabetes to monitor their blood sugar during training to
see what works best for them.
Talk to a dietitian or doctor before changing any diet
plan.
Potential Weight Gain. To store every ounce of
carbohydrate, 3 ounces of water is also required.
Carbohydrate loading usually results in a weight gain of
1 to 3 pounds.
While this isn't an issue for many athletes, it could be as
issue for some sports that have specific weight classes.
The Energy Crash. As a result of carb loading, blood
sugar levels increase and as a consequent the level of
insulin into the blood also rises to help body cells store
the sugar, which then decreases blood sugar levels
again. This can lead to feeling lethargic and tired.
So to avoid this, it is important to not miss any meals
and have access to carb-based foods and drinks during
a competition..
The Most Common Mistakes
Unnecessary carb loading. A major mistake is to use
carb loading when there is no need to. Research has
found carb loading can be beneficial for exercise lasting
more than 60-90 minutes. If you are a recreationally
paddler but don’t compete regularly or perform long
training sessions, then carb loading is probably not
necessary for you.
Eating Too Much Fat. Some people make the
mistake of choosing foods that are high in both
carbohydrates and fat, rather than just carbs (e.g.
many desserts such as chocolate, ice cream and
cookies as well as creamy pasta sauces and buttery
breads). Increasing the carb intake should be done in
tandem with reducing fat intake, to avoid eating too
many calories. Eating too much could cause weight
gain or cause a sluggish feeling.
Eating Too Much Fibre. Eating high-fibre foods could
also be detrimental. Although fibre is part of a healthy
diet, too much fibre during carb loading can cause
stomach discomfort in some individuals
Eating New or Unusual Foods. It can be a mistake to
introduce new or unusual foods during carb loading,
as this can lead to an upset stomach due to unfamiliar
foods.
Eating the Wrong Amount of Carbs. Another possible
mistake is not knowing the right amount of
carbohydrate intake. To avoid eating too much or too
little, it is recommended that you should record your
food intake and calculate how many carbs are eaten.
Exercising Too Much. Last but not least, failing to
decrease or “taper” the amount of exercise during
carb loading could limit the extent to which a body’s
r.glycogen store increase during a high-carb diet.
Play It Safe ! Before you start carb loading,
consider whether you will benefit from it. You
should also figure out how many carbs you normally
eat so you know by how much you should change
your regular diet. Deciding the right duration for carb
loading is also important.
The best way to approach carb loading is to
experiment a few weeks before a big competition. Set
up a mock event in which you practice a loading
protocol.
This will enable you to find the right amount and types
of carbohydrate that works best for you. Never try a
new approach, or new foods, before a key
competition. With regard to carb loading, always try to
work with a sports nutritionist or dietician, to discuss
the precise needs of your sport and competition with
regard to carb loading.

Returning to the big ‘Talking Point’ of the day, in fact the most important talking point in the history of the IDBF,
that is, the continuing attempts by the ICF to take over and control Dragon Boating but surely the big question,
in all of this is, where does China stand on this issue ?
As we all know, China is where Dragon Boating started,
going back well over 3000 years of recorded history,
even before China’s traditional Dragon Boat Festival, to
commemorate the death of Qu Yuan, began over 2000
years ago and which is still celebrated today, with the
Dragon Boat Festival now a public holiday in China.
Sport in China is run and controlled by government
officials and the President and Vice-Presidents of the
Chinese Olympic Committee and the Minister and Vice-
Ministers of Sport, are one and the same people,
appointed by the Chinese government, as was in the
early years, the IDBF President – now the IDBF
President of Honour..
When it comes to international sport and Chinese
Teams, nothing happens without government approval,
especially when it comes to policy matters..
Where Dragon Boating is concerned China was a
Founding Member of the IDBF (1991) and the ADBF
(1992) and the first World Championships were held in
China in 1995 (Yue yang).
China was also instrumental, through its influence
within sport, in assisting the IDBF to gain membership
of GAISF and recognition for Dragon Boating as a
distinctly separate Sport from Canoeing, with its own
independent governing bodies.
China has always backed the IDBFs quest for IOC
recognition and eventual inclusion in the Olympic Games
and also supported the IDBF in complaining to the IOC
and GAISF over the actions of the ICF, as the extracts
below, from a letter from the Chinese sports authorities,
in November 2002, shows : -
To: Executive Board Members of the International Olympic Committee 30 November 2002 Members of the Council of the GAISF
President of the International World Games Association
We write to you concerning the unilateral claim by the International Canoe Federation (ICF), that the Dragon Boat
Racing is a discipline of canoeing. This claim was made without reference to the International Dragon Boat Federation
(IDBF), which is the original and established world governing body for dragon boating. The ICF made its claim without
having ever organized an international dragon boat competition anywhere in the world and in the knowledge that the
IDBF was seeking recognition from the IOC, for the sport, and for membership of GAISF.
We would like to clarify our viewpoint and position on these matters, which in consideration of the positions we hold in
sport, both nationally and internationally, represents not only the voice of the international dragon boat communities but also
that of Asia and most importantly China, the country where dragon boating originated from over 2000 years ago.
It is quite inappropriate for the ICF to claim dragon boating as a discipline of canoeing and we find the notion
unacceptable for the reasons of carrying forward the Olympic spirit, and the culture, history and technology of dragon boating.
In summarising our views, we would reiterate that having some similar techniques does not mean that dragon boating and
canoeing are the same thing. The dragon boat and the canoe are technically, historically and geographically, quite different
paddled water craft and therefore it is quite illogical, inappropriate and irresponsible to simply categorize them as being the
same; for to do so ignores the historical and geographical facts and insults the cultural origins of the dragon boat from China,
and the canoe which derives from North America or the kayak which comes from the Inuit peoples of the Arctic.
Mr ZHANG Faqiang, Mr WANG Xiaolin,
Vice Minister of State Sport General Administration of China, Director-General of the Sport For All, General Administrative
Vice President of the Chinese Olympic Committee, Centre of the State Sport of China
President of the International Dragon Boat Federation President of the Chinese Dragon Boat Association
This unreserved support for the IDBF meant that the
Chinese Canoe Association (CCA) was not involved in
Dragon Boating and even wrote to the ICF, that Dragon
Boating was not Canoeing. Internationally, Chinese
Teams only attended IDBF and ADBF events and never
an ICF or ACC (Asian Canoe Confederation) event.
Only Dragon Boat events organised by the IDBF,
ADBF or CDBA, such as Asian Championships and the
IDBF World Cup were held in China and even the
Guangzhou Asian Games Dragon Boat Races were
organised by the Chinese Dragon Boat Association,
under the ADBF and following IDBF Rules and
Regulations.
TALKING POINT 2 – a Look At The Issues Of The Day 1
China’s Dragon Boat Policy – One Sport, Two Systems ?
Dragon Sport News - Emagazine “An Independent Voice for
Dragon Boating. " More than a Sport – a Tradition "
But in the last 2 or 3 years, things have changed
dramatically, with the CCA and ACC jointly organising an
Asian Dragon Boat Champs in China and this year the 1
ICF World Cup, also held in China.
The ACC were the lead federation in the recent Asian

Meanwhile the CCA, at the direct request of the ICF
President, has developed, with financial help from the
COC, a new 8 paddler ICF Dragon Boat, which was
exhibited over the weekend 14/15 September 2019, at the
ICF Flat Water World Champs, held in Tokyo.

So what has brought about this change in
Dragon Boat policy. From the Chinese perspective the
answer is simple - “Olympic Dragon Boat Racing’.
Having Dragon Boating as an Olympic Sport
always been the prime aim of the Chinese Government
(Olympic Committee) and since the foundation of the
IDBF, China has seen the IDBF as the best way to
achieve this, as their GAISF and IOC support
However, with the ascendancy of the ICF and ACC
our Sport, over the past few years; the continuing
opposition by the ICF to the IDBF becoming an IOC
recognised federation and the reluctance of the IOC to
give such recognition until – as the IOC Sports Dept
it, “you have resolved your problem with the ICF”,
led, it would seem, to a shift in thinking within
sports authorities.
This appears to be along the lines of supporting both
the IDBF and the ICF but in different spheres of influence.
This has clearly been exploited to a high degree by
both the ICF and ACC. On the one hand China
continue to support the IDBF World Championships
ADBF and IDBF Members events and the general
development of the Sport, through the CDBA, ADBF and
the IDBF.

This is, potentially, an easy solution to the problem
for the IOC and COC but one that would leave the IDBF

As I became more paddle fit and learned the names of my teammates, I felt a connection that I had not experienced
when I had previously participated in the sport. My team has a saying “We are not big on sympathy, but we are
huge on empathy”. At my first national regatta, our goal was to win at least one gold medal. My team managed
a clean sweep of every division they entered and won all five of their final races ! I have personally yet to meet BC
dragon boat teams that are not competitive…do they even exist?
At this first Nationals I also experienced my first rose ceremony…oh my! I was totally unprepared for how
emotional this would be. I had been warned not to look at a certain member of my team as they always cried. Have no
fear, I didn’t look at her, but I suspect I was just as emotional.
Three years down the track, I have been diagnosed Stage 4 and the beast
has invaded my liver. This diagnosis hit me hard. As a solo mum, whose
parents have already passed, I wondered what would happen to my babies? I
have an amazing extended family by blood, but I now also have a fantastic
extended family by paddling. My kids have gained so many aunties through
my sister dragon boaters that I have no fear that they will be well taken care of
when I am not here. The competitiveness that we have in our dragon boat
team has helped me fight this disease aggressively.
Dragon boating has allowed me to become an international
sportsperson after a diagnosis of breast cancer, who has won a host
of medals, including a silver at the Club Crew World Championships in
Szeged, Hungary, and I have very proudly carried the New Zealand
flag across the Ponte Vecchio, Florence into an amazing opening
ceremony at the IBCPC festival. BC dragon boating has given me a
second family that I love and who I know, very much love me back in
bucket loads. Now, I cannot for one minute imagine life without
dragon boating, and my teammates.

stressful training on the Kinneret ? Orit Ziv, is a mother of three and grandmother of two. Her younger sister Tali passed
away three years ago from BC. Shortly after, Orit felt a lump and understood she was now also a part of the statistics.
When she was undergoing painful chemo and radiation therapy, Orit decided to dedicate herself to women who were
struck by breast cancer, ovarian cancer and womb cancer. She started a team in memory of her sister.
The existence of this team quickly spread all over in various languages: Hebrew, Arabic, Amharic, Russian and above
all, the language of the heart, which knows no boundaries or ethnic background. Today Orit, Rubik and Noa have
recruited a startling number of 110 paddlers, between ages 28 to 70. (Enough to form 5 Dragon Boat teams). They
come to the Kinneret twice or three times a week all year round from all over the country. They attend after radiation
treatments, travel by train, bus and car, to meet on the Kinneret shores, where the magic begins…

CANADA ON ICE: Dragon Boats are a familiar sight in the summer in Canada
but in February of this year the Wonder- Broads of Windsor-Essex, Ontario spent
a chilly weekend in Ottawa, Canada’s capital city, for a different kind of boat
race…on ice!
The WonderBroads decided to start their season by giving ice dragon boat racing a try at Ottawa’s annual Winterlude festival. It draws athletes from as far as California and Florida. This was the third year of North American ice dragon boat racing.
The boat only seats 12, so some WonderBroads joined a different team so that
all could get the experience. Paddles are equipped with spikes to drag the boats along the ice and the most difficult part is to
try and get the boat off the line. After only a 20 minute practice on the ice the WonderBroads gave this ice version their best
shot and made the women’s semi finals in the C division!
We were also proud to be part of the first ever Inaugural Breast Cancer Survivor Ceremonial Race on Ice. We joined seven
survivor teams in this race as we celebrated the determination and spirit that Breast Cancer Survivor teams bring to every
race. We were happy to welcome and reunite with members of teams from Ireland and other parts of Canada and the USA.
European up-date From Svenja Franke-Bruhn.
AUSTRIA: Vienna Pink Dragons formed in 2015, the first and only pink paddling team
in Austria, are members of the IBCPC. Patience and perseverance has seen the group
slowly growing and particularly this year with an influx of newbies and potential members
as we are now quite well known and accepted in the country.
As a young team we have already had our fair share of challenges, the biggest being the
loss of our co-founding member Nina Kerres in May 2018. She left us a great present in
order to thank the young team for all the help during her illness: a beautiful small dragon
boat – in pink of course. She would have been so happy to see our participation in the
IBCPC festival in Florence last year.
It was a great experience on various levels and for us as a composite team even more
so as we were the only team to come first in each heat. Of course it is a participatory
festival yet it is such a nice feeling when you cross that line first.
SWITZERLAND: Officially there is no pink paddling team yet, at least not enrolled with the IBCPC. There are several plans
to start a team and smaller groups are already practising with established dragon- boat teams, but not always under a pink
banner. One lady who is a very successful paddler told me she will think about this in more detail once she is not capable
anymore to paddle with the national team ! There is a lot of potential there. I am confident Switzerland will see its first pink
paddling team in the near future.
GERMANY: The development of pink paddling teams has been very good in recent years. Currently there are 16
established teams and two who are trying to set up a team. This can be challenging in some cities/areas whereas in others it
seems relatively easy to acquire new paddlers.
Only three teams of the German teams are currently enrolled with the IBCPC: Pink Paddler Wiesbaden, Ladybugs and Pink
Patrol. I am in contact with almost every established team now. They are all well informed about IBCPC and its work.
There is also very good news are coming from Pink Dragonistas Hannover, a relatively young, all inclusive team, who have
drawn a lot of younger women to their team thanks to other pink activities. They took part together with the Pink ladies from
Dresden at the Nationals in Schwerin, Germany last year, where a BCS category was introduced for the first time.
Both teams took part in the small boat BCS competition in Sevilla, Spain in July. More teams are now taking part in BCS
events abroad, like the Ladybugs who went to Barcelona this year and Pink Patrol to Vienna. One reason behind it is
certainly the participation in Florence, so it was really beneficial to have the IBCPC festival in Europe for the first time.

CHILE - Fortale Senos Team
The team Fortale Senos Chile was created in Santiago on the shores of the Carén
Lagoon in April 2017. We started our project looking for all kinds of support by visiting
clinics, foundations and interviewing with outstanding doctors. in September 2018 we
officially became members of the International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission
(IBCPC).
Our first Paddle for Life meeting, was such a great success, with an attendance
of more than 70 people in all modalities of boating.
After a year of hard work spreading the activity continuously the Fortale Senos Chile
Team, strengthened and women arrived from all the neighbourhoods of Santiago and
the surrounding areas, organized themselves, supported each other, hurriedly
searched for their medical certificate authorizing them to paddle and ones that had no authorization arrived to observe..
The project took flight and teams were also formed in other cities, such as Chiloé, Temuco (Temuco already has their
Dragon Boat waiting for the survivors), Talca and Viña del Mar.
Finally, we just want to tell that these Chilean women are having a really good time, we have big dreams, one of
them is to get our dragon boat, to be able to train together, organize the second event of Paddle for Life in October and we
want to achieve greater involvement of Chilean women in the International Meeting Latinoamérica en Rosa to be held in
Neuquén Argentina in next November.
CHINA: Beijing and Shanghai - new BCS teams form.
Beijing BCS Dragon Sister Team launched their dragon boat and practiced
on the water for the first time at Beijing Yu Yuan Tan Dragon Boat Club, on
the 19th May 2019. All of the teams in China will be named “Dragon Sisters”
followed by the city or place that they come from so the first team is Dragon
Sisters, Beijing. The second , Dragon Sisters, Shanghai, follows in the
footsteps of their Beijing Dragon Sisters. This article tells of the Shanghai
teams formation.
Huddled amidst the bustling Saturday crowd in Shanghai’s Jing An park, 20
women clap as each in turn stands to share their story. One has lived with
breast cancer for 23 years, more than one person is now in treatment. Some hug as old friends while others put faces to
names they recognize from their shared BCS Wechat group.
Together, they represent the first breast cancer survivor (BCS) dragon boat team to emerge in this city of 26 million since
2006. They’ve come to kick the tires on the dragon boat lifestyle they’ve heard so much about. If they like what they see,
they could very well make BCS dragon boat history.
Twenty-three-year-survivor, Shi Ge tells the group about her experience
coaching an earlier BCS dragon boat team in 2004 at the request of a local
cancer foundation. In 2006 the team welcomed survivors of other cancers.
Ge says she can now see the value of organizing a BCS- only team, and
doing so from the bottom up. She is ready to bring her 15+ years of dragon
boat coaching to this new Shanghai team.
Sport medicine specialist and former Beijing track coach Guang Li shares
his views on the benefits of sport and exercise to improve the health of
people living with breast cancer, diabetes and other conditions.
“Dragon boat lifestyle benefits our emotional as well as our physical health and wellbeing,” says Guoning Liu, whose
company has a project helping people with high blood pressure and diabetes to improve their health through sport and
exercise. He and Li joined the sport-medicine committee to help organize and support BCS dragon boat teams in Mainland
China as part of the Society’s new Awaken the Dragon Sister project.

DENMARK ; Danish Dragon Boat team, from team member Helen.
Presenting a project. It is 2017 in early spring in Copenhagen, Denmark. A group of women are gathered at a
meeting arranged by physiotherapist, PhD Kira Bloomquist. All have had a diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer.
Kira started with I would like to present you with a new project to establish the first Danish dragon boat team for breast
cancer survivors. The goal is to represent Denmark at IBCPC’s Dragon Boat Event to be held in Florence next summer!”
“Would you like to join?” I attended the meeting and there was no doubt, nor hesitation in my mind. YES, I am in ! A
few of the women were experienced canoe or kayak paddlers, but we were all new to dragon boating. So, with just
a little over a year to prepare the team for Florence, we had to act fast. A breast cancer dragon boat society, Danish
Dragon Abreast was founded, and we named our team, Copenhagen Dragon Boat Team.
Under the supervision of our team trainers, Kira,Marianne Sonnichsen (a highly skilled physiotherapist) and Flemming
Simonsen (our coach on the water) we trained and developed dragon boat skills.
Despite the fact that Danes are known for their Viking ships, dragon boating is not common in Denmark and there
was no obvious place to go and find a dragon boat ! However, Copenhagen is situated on the water and luckily for us the
Copenhagen Rowing Club had some old dragon boats that they generously agreed to let us use.
May 2017. Finally, the day had arrived for our very first meeting with
the dragon boat. I recall my emotions. I was so excited to be part of this
project. I took a first glance at the old Dragon Boat. My zodiac sign is
Aquarius! Water is my element, but I am not keen on depths or darkness.
Honestly, I was terrified and hesitated when told to take a seat.
My dear friend looked straight into my eyes, grabbed my hands and ensured
me that everything would be fine. I got into the boat. Paddles Up! Ready!
The Dragon boat began gliding through the calm water. It was awesome!
With my very first stroke, all of my fear disappeared in a split second.
In that moment, I knew dragon boating was for me. I was now a Paddler. It would change my life forever
Throughout 2017 we became confident not only with the dragon boat, terms and commands but also with each other. .At the season’s end our training moved back indoors. As a side note, our neighbours from Malmo, Sweden also formed a team shortly after we did. We share a close relationship and enjoy working together in workshops and training sessions.
Spring/summer 2018. With only a little over two months before the regatta in Florence, our training intensified . The final
bits and pieces of organizing our trip fell into place. Sunshine, blue sky and unusually high temperatures up to 30 plus
degrees hit Denmark. It was hard to resist a swim after each session in the Dragon boat.
Besides the “The Little Mermaid” we became quite a tourist attraction when paddling through the harbour and the canals
of the city. We were also invited to present the team and talk about our participation in Florence on national television.
Florence. Words are insufficient to describe the amazing
experience of partaking in the IBCPC’s regatta in Florence. The
emotions and feelings, well everything, in connection to our
participation was unforgettable and will always remain in our hearts.
To be part of this unique international community of thousands of
women and men is difficult to describe in a few words. We were
overwhelmed by the size of this event and so proud to be a part of it.
The pinkness is a reminder of the shared experience of breast cancer,
but the sensation of being part of it makes you forget the reason that
you are there in the first place.
The future. When we started, our main goal was to participate at the event in Florence. However, on the flight back to Copenhagen we knew that we needed to continue with the project. Today there are now 40 members in the team, and the Copenhagen Rowing Club continues to be our base, with the promise of new boats for the coming season.
We are looking into the many regattas and events to participate in. We are also trying to build a financial foundation for the team and organization.

Our older boat Khalessi is starting to show her age so we’ve had to learn a
bit about repairs over the past couple of years. The gel coat can become
chipped and cracked and this can allow water to seep into the core of the boat,
especially if she’s kept on the water over the summer months as ours are.
The outer layer of the boat is the gel coat and this sits on top of a layer of
fibreglass matting and then an inner core of foam. If water seeps in over a
prolonged period this can lead to osmosis and the gel coat starts to form blisters
and peel away from the fibreglass beneath. Small chips and cracks can be fixed
using gel coat filler, here’s how !
1. First sand down the area and open up any blisters. If it’s a big area you may need some expert advice.
Check the area underneath is dry. If you have long hair, make sure you tie your hair back – gel coat
doesn’t brush out as we discovered last year!!- and wear gloves.
2. You’ll need a screwdriver to get the lid off the tin then take a golf ball sized amount of filler and mix
with a 2cm squeeze of hardener - the plastic lid is handy as a mixing surface.
3. Mix well for 2 minutes then use the plastic tool to fill the hole. The mixture hardens within a few
minutes so don’t mix too much at a time - its also handy to have a second person with you to spot the
areas that need filling ahead of you and check you’ve not missed any bits. (Attaching small sticky labels
next to these areas helps too).
4. Once set the repaired area can be sanded back until smooth using 180 grade and then 400 grade
wet and dry sandpaper. The area can be buffed to a shine if needed.

DRAGONS AT THE DOCKS RAISES OVER €250,000 FOR DUBLIN SIMON COMMUNITY
Over 800 participants took part in this year’s Dragons At the Docks property industry fundraising event held at Grand Canal Dock, Dublin. The dragon boat racing saw 70 teams compete and in the process, raise €250,000 for charity.
The overall winner was the team from Cairn Homes, with Collen coming second and Investec coming third.
Nine of Ireland’s biggest property companies were the cornerstone sponsors of the second year of the event, with Dalata Hotel Group, Glenveagh Property and Hines joining the original six companies who launched the event last year: Cairn Homes, Green Reit, Hammerson, Hibernia REIT, Ires Reit and Kennedy Wilson Europe Real Estate
75% of the funds raised go to the Dublin Simon Community, with the balance distributed to local charities in the Grand Canal Dock area. Sam McGuinness CEO of the Dublin Simon Community said: “We are honoured to be the charity partner at the Dragons at the Docks. Funds raised at the 2017 event allowed us to acquire a 2-bedroom town-house in Dublin and two apartments”. “This year with the funds raised at Dragons at the Docks, we plan to acquire five more apartments, providing more people who have been through the trauma and abuse of homelessness with a home to call their own.”
Pat Gunne, CEO of Green Reit, speaking on behalf of the nine cornerstone sponsors of the event, said: “It’s great to be part of the second year of the Dragons at the Docks for what is an even bigger and better event than last year. It is fantastic that there has been so much support to help us raise money for important causes like the Dublin Simon Community. Articles courtesy of the Irish Dragon Boat Association Newsletter

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE ICF PRESIDENT JOSE PERURENA-LOPEZ
from Mike MacKeddie-Haslam, IDBF Founder & Honorary President.
Dear Jose,
We have known each other since the early 1970s, when we were the managers of our respective National Canoeing
Teams (Great Britain and Spain). We became good friends and remain so today. In those days we discussed ways of
making the ICF more attractive, dynamic and more relevant for the paddlers and how to develop ‘canoeing’ in the future.
In the early 1980s, when I started to develop Dragon Boat
Sport alongside the traditional Dragon Boat Festivals, you
accepted the view of the then ICF President, Sergio ORSI,
that Dragon Boating, although part of the broad family of
traditional paddled water craft, it could not be classed as a
discipline of ICF Canoeing and would not be. Sergio felt it
should be allowed to develop as a separate paddle sport,
with the help and support of the ICF.
This was the situation from the formation of the IDBF
in 1991 until 2000 when Ulrich Feldhoff became the ICF
President and unilaterally declared that “dragon boat was
now a canoeing discipline of the ICF”, which started the
ICF incursion into Dragon Boat Sport and its opposition to
the IDBF.
In 2007/2008 before you became the ICF President, you
wrote and asked me to meet with you in Spain to discuss
how you might help the development of Dragon Boating,
as an independent sport from Spanish Canoeing.
We met in Madrid and as a result the Spanish Dragon Boat
Federation was established and today is a dynamic and
effective member of the EDBF and IDBF, with a good
working relationship with the Spanish Canoe Federation.
You also assured me that you personally, had no interest
in subsuming Dragon Boating at ICF level and would seek
to ensure that any problems that existed between the ICF
and IDBF would be resolved during your Presidency.
In January 2009, when you were the ICF President, we
again met in Madrid, along with other paddle sport
representatives from Rafting (IRF) and Va’a (outriggers) to
discuss informally, general matters of common interest
between the paddle sports concerned; their future
development, potential bi-lateral agreements between
the federations and ways of resolving any actual or
potential governance issues.
At this constructive meeting, you advised that the
ICF’s priority was the development of its Olympic
disciplines and to sustain those disciplines within the
Summer Olympic Games. The ICF was not looking to
involve itself in new paddle sports and that the ICF was
keen to resolve the present situation over Dragon
Boating with the IDBF and to work on partnerships with
all paddle sport federations. You also stated that the ICF
had no objections to other paddle sport federations, such
as the IRF and IVF, becoming GAISF Members.
The Meeting agreed that it was important to continue
with joint meetings and that a further meeting should
take place. You agreed to make the necessary
arrangements for such a meeting in November 2009 and
said that you would arrange for the federations’ to meet
with the IOC Sports directorate people and the GAISF.
Unfortunately, no such meetings were ever held.
You also advised us that the ICF Board had
nominated each of the newly elected ICF Vice Presidents
a portfolio for the paddle sports of Dragon Boat, Rafting
and Va’a, with a brief to open discussions with the
federations concerned.
It is now 10 years since that worthwhile and friendly
Madrid meeting took place but instead of resolving the
issues between the ICF and the IDBF, they have become
more intransigent and now include other sports.
For example the Rafting Federation’s (IRF), application
to GAISF has not been supported by the ICF, rather the
opposite and the ICF is also embroiled in a dispute with
the International Surf Federation, over the governance of
Stand Up Paddling (SUP) which is now before the Court
of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) for a resolution.
What went wrong with your policy of resolving any

Dragon Boat Festival: How an ancient
Chinese tradition became a global sport
Lau Ka-kuen and Alberto Lucas López SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST. First Published: 29 Apr, 2019
The festival has its roots in ancient China, when a poet
committed suicide. Now a team sport, dragon boat racing benefits from athletes with different skills
The crew of a dragon boat is assigned different places in a boat based on their individual strengths and aptitudes.
Every year, on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, crews of paddlers re-enact the legend of Qu Yuan.
They power boats mounted with ferocious dragon heads through the water to the frenzied beating of drums.
THE LEGEND
In 278BC, in the ancient Chu kingdom during the Warring States Period, poet and government minister Qu Yuan committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River in protest of prevalent corruption among officials.
THE “DRAGONS”
Like any team sport, dragon boat racing benefits from athletes with different skills. Crew members are assigned places in the boat according to their individual strengths and aptitudes.

THE BOAT
In Hong Kong races, the hull is usually made from teak, with a dragon’s head and tail made of camphor wood. The development of dragon boat-making is marked by the type of wood used for the main body of the boat:
Phase 1 (before 1911): Ge wood imported from Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam
Phase 2 (from 1911-the end of 1990s): pine wood imported from the United States
Phase 3 (since 2000): cedar wood from China’s Guizhou province
THE POSITIONS
Paddlers in the front are good at keeping time.
Out-of-sync blades hit the water a fraction of a second behind each other, creating lag.
The back paddlers focus more on power strokes to maintain speed in the faster water.
1. ‘A’ position
Turn your back to the water. Reach forward, stretching your arm and back. Place the paddle at the thigh of the paddler in front of you. Lean your body outside the boat, top arm straight, top shoulder over the water.
2. ‘Catch’ and drive
Enter the blade fully into the water at an approximate 60-degree angle. Pull and counter rotate with your lower arm, shoulder and back. Drive down aggressively with your top arm.
3. Pull and exit
The paddler uses their back muscles to pull the blade parallel with the boat. The exit occurs when the paddle arrives at their hip by lifting their top arm.
4. Recovery
The paddle exits the water at the hip, returning to the ‘A’ position by rotating and stretching the bottom arm, shoulder and back. Additionally, paddlers should attempt to transfer their weight onto the blade.
