The Elizabeth Daily Journal Goes Digital!

In late August, the Elizabeth Public Library received a project grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of the Department of State, for the first phase of our Elizabeth Daily Journal Digitization Project. This Local History and Special Collections project has been in the works for three years!

In its first phase, the digital archive will encompass the January 1871 through August 1915 issues of the Elizabeth Daily Journal, making The Elizabeth Daily Journal readily accessible not only to patrons from our area and state, but also to researchers around the world. Researchers and the general public will be able to search for specific names or terms within the online database or browse through different publication dates. Archives will be availa-ble on our website beginning October 13.Workshops on the use of the database will be offered from October through December. For more information on the Elizabeth Daily Journal Digitization Project or the Local History and Special Collections Department, contact Aimee Fernandez-Puente at (908) 354-6060 x. 7220 or e-mail [email protected].

Elizabeth Daily Journal Digital Database Workshops:

Get a step-by-step introduction to the use of our new Elizabeth Daily Journal Digital Database. Participants will learn how to search for, crop, print and / or save specific articles. Space is limited, and registration is required. Contact the Local History and Special Collections Department at (908) 354-6060 x. 7220 to register.

Tuesdays, October 18 & November 15 6:30-7:30pm

Thursdays, November 3 & December 8 10:30-11:30am

All workshops are held in the 3rd Fl. Computer Lab of our Main Branch

Klezmer Lives! In Elizabeth!

Please join bandleader/clarinetist David Aaron who will play a mix of

instruments and vocals in an overview of Klezmer music, the instrumen-

tal party music of the Jewish People from Eastern Europe (Ashkenazim).

Klezmer’s origins are in the 16th century, and it has evolved and

assimilated local influences (Russian, Romanian, Ottoman, Hungarian,

etc), wherever Ashkenazim have lived since.

Klezmer came to America with the immigration of Jews from Eastern

Europe beginning in the late 19th

century, and has had a wonderful history

in America. Join us for this lunch-time

MORE GOOD-BYES

This month we bid a

fond farewell to

Louisa Bann, who

has worked with us

for the past two

years. Louisa made

a big impact in her

short time here,

initiating our Friday

afternoon Brain

Games, and Tech Time with a Librarian,

while bringing renewed energy and focus to

our Adult Services Department. She was

also a driving force behind our two very

successful Makers Days. Louisa, we will miss

you!!

Nancy Smith

Reference Librarian

for 16 Years

Nancy Smith made

an impression on

everyone! With her

humor, her generos-

ity and yes—her

kooky spirit— she

made us smile, roll

our eyes, and laugh

out loud. She is acknowledged in Judy

Blume’s In the Unlikely Event, for her help in

researching the City of Elizabeth in the early

1950’s. Nancy, enjoy your much-deserved

retirement!
