Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church,

Today we begin a series of nine Masses, called a Novena, to pray for our mothers - the women who have been so important in our lives. Forming us physically and spiritually, emotionally and intellectually, most mothers make enor-mous sacrifices for their children. Join us in praying to God for their happiness on earth and in heaven. We include all grandmothers and other women who have been like mothers to so many of us. And Mother's Day envelopes we received with the names of your loved ones will stay on the high altar next to the Tabernacle for the whole month of May.

Besides being Mother's Day, today is the Fifth Sunday of Easter. In just over a week, on Thursday May 25, we will recall the Ascension of Our Lord into Heaven. Our Mass schedule for this important feast in salvation history will be: Wednesday at 4pm, and Thursday at 7am, 8:30, 12 Noon, and 7:30pm. All of us who are able to participate at Mass on this holy day are obliged to come, so please plan your calendar accordingly.

Last Saturday's First Holy Communion Masses were exciting and inspiring. Congratulations to all our children! Their names were in our bulletin last week. They prepared so well with their very caring teachers: Ms. Jennifer Nygard, Mrs. Kathryn Trivelli, Ms. Nicole Hermanson, and Ms. Jennifer Glynn. Please visit our website www.saintteresasi.org to view beautiful pictures taken by some of us and by the Staten Island Advance. Just click the link!

We really applaud and appreciate the mothers and fathers who brought their children to Sunday Mass and worked with them for many months. They helped the children to know that First Communion is a great moment in their lives, and very important for their spiritual growth. As often happens when we do good things for others, we adults benefit too. We begin again to do what is right. And we have a joyful reason for a party for our children and those who love them!

I want to say thanks most of all to our Coordinator of Religious Education, Mrs. Lisa Rametta. For our parish sacramental celebrations, she is the teacher of teachers, the organizer of many details, and the coordinator of the talents of many dedicated people. I think especially of Mrs. Susan Shanahan, Mrs. Anna Simione, Mrs. Louisa Marrone, Mr. Edward Morand, and Ms. Nicole Hermanson - the enthusiastic leader of song as well as a second-grade teacher!

The celebration of First Holy Communion usually marks the proximate ending of the religious education year for our children attending public schools. The last class day for this year will be Tuesday, May 23. But classes begin again on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. Many students are re-registered already; new families should call the office now at 718 981 2632 so that we can prepare a place for your child.

Our religious education program serves more than 350 young parishioners, and we are very grateful to all the dedi-cated teachers who have been helping us this year. Here is the Honor Roll of our Tuesday afternoon faculty, followed by the names of the adult aides and high school assistants who helped in various ways and became educators by example:

Teachers: Gina Birnbach, Lori Anna Brauer, Camille Brusca, Stefani Deliteris, Tami DiCostanzo, Denise Enright, Nicholas Ferretti, David Flynn, Samantha Gavin, Jennifer Glynn, Nicole Hermanson, Joanne Malick, Danielle Naso, Thomas Parker, Eddie Redden, Regina Sistaro, Sheena Sowlakis, Julia Timpone, Kathryn Trivelli, Vincent Villani, Patricia Ward, and Roseann Zucal.

Teacher’s Aides: Syleste Alexander, Jenna Calvo, Andrew DiCostanzo, Daniella DiStefano, Joseph Ferretti, Michael Lagalla, Theresa Marie Lisanti, Jessica Livote, Sarah Mastoros, Teresa Naso, Vincent Naso, Stephanie Patella, Francesca Pascale, Elizabeth Sulley, Alura Surat, and Brian Villani.

Sunday 10am Liturgy of the Word: Diane Fiore, Jennifer Glynn, Jim Lyons, and Jennifer Costello Puca.

Naturally, every spring there are some people who won't becoming back to teach- which opens up an opportunity for new volunteers to contact Mrs. Rametta now and to be on our faculty in the fall! We are blessed in our parish to have a great mix on Tuesdays of professional teachers, active and retired, and dedicated women and men who are learning the interesting dynamics of classroom management. If you have faith and love, good will and good judgment, and a willing-ness to learn, let us help you to make your contribution. You too can have the satisfaction of sharing the Gospel with children, and becoming a much better Catholic in the process. Call Mrs. Rametta at 718 981 2632 - the sooner the better - and tell her that in September you would like to be part of our great community of religion teachers.

100th Anniversary of Fatima Appearances

One hundred years ago, our Blessed Mother appeared to three humble shepherd children at Fatima in Portugal. She asked everyone to pray

for peace, especially through the Rosary and with devotion to her Immaculate Heart. So let us pray:

O God, who chose the Mother of your Son to be our Mother also, grant that persevering in prayer and penance for the salvation of the world, we may more effectively advance the reign of God

and be among those who will see You in heaven.

The winner of our April 50/50 Drawing was: Mrs. Marie Marrone. Her prize was $293. If you would like to participate in this monthly activity that benefits our parish and makes people happy,

look for the 50/50 envelopes in the vestibule. The next drawing will be at the end of May.

GOOD NEWS FROM SAINT TERESA SCHOOL

* Last Friday, our Eighth Graders had a

graduation trip to the ships and displays at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. Our Mass and Graduation Ceremony for 34 students will be

on Friday June 16. * Each class of 2nd grade and above attends Mass once a week, and as a school community at least once a month. On Ascension Thursday, May 25, everyone will be at the 8:30 Mass. We are planning to honor the Blessed Mother with a May Crowning ceremony of her statue, which is located on the side altar near the bap-tismal font. Everyone is welcome to this spe-cial event. * With leadership by Principal Mrs. Anna Simione, now completing her second year, our school has been attracting more and more new students. Their parents visit the school and, liking what they see, decide to enroll them for the advantage of a Catholic school community and education. As of today, apart from the 40 students coming to our Pre-School, parents have registered more than 75 new students for grades K to 8 for September. For the first time in many years, we expect that our school popu-lation will be above 300.

Our wonderful 10AM

Children's Liturgy will

take a summer break

after the 10AM Mass

on May 21, and will

return in September.

COLLECTING FOR BABIES IN NEED

On the third Sunday of each month, which will be next week, we invite your gifts

of baby items or money to help young mothers in need through our BABY BIN.
