E vangelical Community Hospital

continues to build its foundation

of specialists, increasing the medical

options available to patients. In Fiscal

Year 2014, that foundation was

strengthened by acquiring two well-

known practices: SUN Orthopaedic

Group, Inc. and OB/GYN Associates

of Lewisburg.

By the end of 2013, SUN

Orthopaedics, which had had a

collegial relationship with Evangelical

for decades, officially became part

of Evangelical Community Hospital’s

Medical Services Organization. The

acquisition of this practice, renamed

SUN Orthopaedics of Evangelical,

combined Evangelical’s leading-

edge technology, modern facilities,

and specially trained staff with the

surgical expertise of SUN Ortho’s

eight board-certified surgeons.

The union represents a perfect fit

for both entities, ensuring patients

have seamless access to Evangelical’s

Center for Orthopaedics, where

procedures for the muscular and

skeletal systems are performed by a

unified team dedicated solely to the

care of orthopaedic patients of all

ages.

During the beginning of 2014,

a second merging of resources

occurred with the acquisition of

OB/GYN Associates of Lewisburg.

The purchase brings together

OB/GYN Associates’ successful history

of providing comprehensive women’s

healthcare and Evangelical’s realized

vision of convenient, accessible, and

affordable health services for women

of the local communities.

The practice officially became

OB/GYN of Evangelical on July 1,

2014. The addition of OB/GYN

Associates to Evangelical marries the

Hospital’s certified obstetric staff,

surgical and obstetric capabilities and

facilities, and technological advances

with a thriving practice of experts in

the field of gynecology and obstetrics.

OB/GYN of Evangelical comprises six

physicians, three certified midwives,

two certified registered nurse

practitioners, and a certified physician

assistant. These experienced

practitioners offer a wide range of

healthcare services for women of

all ages, including obstetrical and

prenatal care, high-risk pregnancy

care, infertility treatment, and all

aspects of gynecological care and

surgery.

These acquisitions open the door for

expansion and growth in a changing

healthcare landscape while at the

same time answer the ever-changing

needs of Evangelical’s patients and

communities. Â

E arly detection saves lives—that’s

the message that is heard loud

and clear throughout every breast

cancer awareness campaign or

pink-related event. At The Thyra M.

Humphreys Center for Breast Health

the staff is constantly looking for

tools that keep them a step ahead of

cancer.

In May 2014, the Center added a

new technology to its line of defense.

The somo•v™ ABUS Platinum system

from GE Healthcare was installed to

conduct whole breast ultrasounds

on women with dense breasts. The

somo•v adds three-dimensional

technology to the already state-of-

the-art imaging services provided at

the Center.

Dense breast tissue not only

increases the risk of breast cancer

but also makes cancer more difficult

to detect using mammography

alone, according to multiple large

studies. One study, published in

the New England Journal of Medicine,

showed mammography sensitivity is

significantly reduced in women with

dense breasts, as density masks the

appearance of tumors. As breast

density goes up, the accuracy of

mammograms goes down. Studies

have shown that automated breast

ultrasound increases cancer

detection by 35.7 percent over

mammography alone for women with

dense breasts.

This 3D, radiation-free whole

breast ultrasound technology is

designed to work in conjunction with

mammography, which is still the

only method of detecting cancers

associated with calcifications.

Compared to another commonly

used technology called Breast

Tomosynthesis (3D mammography),

the ABUS system is a readily

accepted diagnostic tool by most

insurances, offsetting fees for which

the patient might be responsible.

“The ABUS system creates images

through sound waves that are viewed

on our Advanced 3D Workstation,”

said Kenneth Jusko, DO, Medical

Director of Imaging Services at

Evangelical Community Hospital.

“Those images are more accurate

when identifying abnormalities

in dense breasts because as the

radiologist, I can see side-by-side

comparisons of the same images

from different angles, giving me

several views of the same area at

the same time on one screen. Those

views give me incredible insight as to

what exists inside the breast.”

“We are very excited to have added

the GE Healthcare ABUS system to

our comprehensive breast imaging

Bigger picture: Ultrasounds the whole breast, not just portions of the breast

Enhanced detection: Finding cancers at an earlier, more treatable stage in dense breast tissue

No radiation: Uses sound waves to create 3D pictures of dense breast tissue

Radiologists can look through hundreds of breast tissue image “slices,” looking at layers of dense tissue to find breast

cancers that might be missed on a traditional mammogram.

Clinicians can view suspicious areas in a 3D plane, giving them greater control over what is seen and supporting more

confident decisions.

The somo∙VIEWer™ Advanced 3D Workstation enables fast, accurate review and archiving of patient exams.

capabilities,” said John F. Turner,

MD, FACS, Clinical Co-Manager of

The Thyra M. Humphreys Center for

Breast Health. “Mammography is an

effective tool for the early detection

of breast cancer; however, it doesn’t

work equally well in all women,

particularly those with dense breast

tissue. The ability to offer ABUS in

addition to mammography ensures

our patients are getting the fullest

range of imaging available, in the

safest manner possible.”

By law, women must be notified

by their healthcare providers if

mammograms reveal they have

dense breast tissue. The Center

not only notifies patients they have

this type of tissue, but the staff

goes the extra step to provide

them educational materials

and consultation to help them

understand and make the best

decisions possible for their health.

“We realize there are other options

in our local healthcare arena for

breast care services including Breast

Tomosynthesis, but we specifically

chose this new 3D ultrasound

technology for its superior ability

to capture images of abnormalities

through lower compression, without

additional radiation exposure,” said

Jusko.

“At the end of the day, our goal is

to help every woman who has an

abnormality detect it, find it early, and

take whatever means necessary to

resolve it.” Â

Giving Her a Fighting Chance

Nancy DeHaven-Imgrund, 46, of

Lewisburg, visited The Thyra M.

Humphreys Center for Breast

Health for her annual mammogram.

Previously identified as having

dense breast tissue, Nancy asked

her technician if she could have

an ultrasound done that day with

the Center for Breast Health’s

new somo•V Automated Breast

Ultrasound (ABUS). While her

mammogram results came back

normal, the ABUS 3D imaging

technology showed otherwise. Nancy

returned to the Center for Breast

Health, this time meeting with John

F. Turner, MD, FACS, to undergo a

breast biopsy, which detected cancer.

After additional tests indicated the

cancer had spread to her lymph

nodes, Nancy is fighting back

with a treatment plan consisting

of chemotherapy, surgery, and

radiation.

“If it wasn’t for the ABUS, I wouldn’t

be here (fighting cancer),” she said,

From page 7

adding to the women in the

Susquehanna Valley, “the

technology is at Evangelical, so

take advantage of it.”Â

T wenty years ago, the leaders

and administrators of

Evangelical Community Hospital

made a decision based on the

passion of one nurse who changed

the way all of Pennsylvania would

handle sexual assault cases in the

future.

Through the perseverance and

determination of Darlene Rowe,

RN, CEN, Director of Emergency

Services at the Hospital, the Sexual

Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)

program was begun in 1994,

the first program of its type in

Pennsylvania.

The SANE program

focuses on specialized

care of victims while at

the same time making sure evidence

is collected properly to aid the

criminal justice system in conviction

of the offender.

At Evangelical, victims are treated

in a discrete area of the emergency

room, away from other patients,

in consideration of the special

circumstances.

Prepared to care for sexual assault

victims at all times of the day and

night, one of the SANE nurses is

called in to deliver the care these

cases require, with the sensitivity of a

trained individual. An interview with

the patient is done in a team format

with the police present so the patient

doesn’t have to relive or

retell the story over and

over again, lessening the

need to re-victimize the

patient.

SANE nurses are

trained through

extensive

course work

that includes

evidence handling,

gynecological/pelvic

examination, and the sensitive

handling of the victim’s mental

and emotional well-being in

addition to their physical care. As

a commitment to understanding,

the nurses participate in police

rides and meet with district

attorneys to get an up-close,

personal view of the criminal

justice system in the area.

“In 20 years, the program, and

more importantly the nurses

who have chosen to be part

Darlene Rowe, RN, CEN, Director of Emergency Services at Evangelical Community Hospital (left) , recipient of the Governor’s Pathfinder Award, was nominated by Susan Mathias, Chief Executive Officer of Transitions (right).

For spearheading the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program and

her continued support and management of the dedicated nurses who deliver

services to victims of sexual assault, Darlene Rowe, RN, CEN, now the Director

of Emergency Services at Evangelical Community Hospital, was awarded the

Governor’s Pathfinder Award in the Allied Professional Award Category in

2014. She was presented the award at the 13th Pennsylvania Pathways for

Victim Services Conference in State College, which is held to foster professional

development for victims’ service providers.

The Pathfinder Award, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Coalition on Crime and

Delinquency (PCCD), is given to an individual who has a history of outstanding

service in meeting the needs of individual victims in collaboration with a

Pennsylvania victim service program. Â

Pioneer in Sexual Assault Program at Evangelical Receives Governor’s Pathfinder Award

of it, has made great strides in

assuring patients are cared for

compassionately to help them

heal and receive justice,” said

Rowe.

Currently there are four certified

SANE nurses at Evangelical and

in Fiscal Year 2014, 32 cases of

sexual assault came through the

Emergency Department’s doors.

The program is so valuable that

since its inception, hospitals

from all over the state have used

Evangelical’s model to build their

own sexual assault programs. Many

of those have asked that Rowe come

to help them in the implementation.

Rowe continued, “Now, not only have

we convinced our rural community

that we need a program of this

nature, but the effort has grown, and

hospitals throughout Pennsylvania

have made the choice to include a

similar program at their locations and

give victims of sexual assault places

to go in their time of need.” Â

P atients entering Evangelical

Community Hospital receive

high-quality care on two levels,

human and beyond human.

Evangelical’s people deliver skilled,

compassionate medical attention,

which has built the Hospital’s

reputation as a place with a personal

touch, backed by a degree of leading-

edge technology that some might

find surprising.

One expects computerized patient

and pharmaceutical records at a

modern hospital—both of which you

find at Evangelical—but there are

even more surprising technology

additions at this community

hospital. Computerized medication

administration, electronic messages

between pharmacists and nurses,

optimized operating room utilization,

high-tech tools for sanitizing patient

rooms, and more exist within the

walls of Evangelical. All are incredible

advancements for a community

hospital that has been in existence

since 1926.

“Information Technology (IT) touches

everything now,” said Dale Moyer,

Vice President of Information

Systems/Chief Information Officer,

who led employees through more

than 14 IT upgrades or replacements

this fiscal year. “It doesn’t matter

what your job is here. You’re going

to be involved with some form of

technology.”

Patients benefit from IT upgrades in

the integration of electronic, privacy-

protected data, which follows them

not only within Hospital departments

but to and from outpatient offices

as well. This provides physicians a

patient’s health history so doctors

can quickly sift through information

needed at the moment—say,

medications or previous surgeries—

to find the data that used to

be available only through time-

consuming phone or email messages.

“Integration is really the name of the

game with information systems,”

Moyer said. “It became very clear,

talking to providers, that they wanted

some sort of integrated system.

They wanted to give the patient

exceptional care, which starts

with a foundation of having all the

information clinicians need in one

place.”

Seeing that integrated files would

improve the efficiency of handling

patient information, and because the

Hospital’s strategic plan has always

centered on providing patients the

best possible care, the Hospital

Other upgrades include the GE

Centricity Surgical Management

System, which helps surgical staff

members more efficiently manage

resources, including rooms,

anesthesia records, and supplies,

while a Tracker Board charts a

patient’s progress from pre-op

to recovery. The Workstation on

nurses from room to room and

eliminates sometimes hard-to-read

handwritten notes on patient care,

while the bedside Knowledge-Based

Medication Administration™ (KBMA)

reduces human error with bar code

scanning and enables nurses to

confidently verify the Five Rights of

Medication Administration: right

medication, right dose, right time,

right route, and right patient.

“It’s a safety check, and it’s a good

one,” Moyer said.

Electronic technology touches every

department, including those where

patients would least expect to find it,

like custodial work. Moyer described

a black light tool that gauges

cleanliness in random inspections of

patient rooms.

“We score very well,” he added. “We’re

very proud of that and of the job

Environmental Services does.”

The IT upgrades and replacements

could not have succeeded without

the camaraderie of staff members in

all Hospital departments.

“This project brought more people

together in collaboration than any

I’ve seen in a long time because there

are so many pieces to it,” Moyer said.

“I would like to commend our entire

Hospital staff. It was a monumental

task. The effort put forth to make it

successful was really appreciated by

our entire department.” Â

an important step in the integration

process. The timing for the upgrade

complemented the Hospital’s efforts

to meet Meaningful Use—specific

objectives that hospitals must achieve

to qualify for Centers for Medicare

& Medicaid Services (CMS) Incentive

Programs.

The vast reach of the new, integrated

system required two full-time

Allscripts employees onsite and an

Evangelical team of six IT members

dedicated to implementing the

program as well as a dozen or

so “super users”—nurses, lab

technicians, etc.—who learned

the system and then helped their

colleagues. Technology enhances

Keeping TabsAnyone who’s endured the tense experience

of sitting in a waiting room while a loved

one undergoes surgery can appreciate the

reassurance of the GE Centricity Surgical

Management System’s Tracker Board.

In the waiting room, friends and family

members can follow the patient using a

private identification number on a virtual

“white board” and track their loved one’s

surgical progress from arrival to the

recovery room. Within the surgical areas,

the same information is displayed in more

detail, allowing staff to better manage

resources to attend to patients.

“For example, the recovery room staff can

tell approximately when patients will be

arriving from the operating room based

on the case status of their display,” said

Dale Moyer, Vice President of Information

Systems/Chief Information Officer. “Similarly,

staff knows when a room is available to be

cleaned and prepped for the next case.”

Optimizing resource management allows

for a smoother, more efficient flow, leading

to the top-notch healthcare experience

that patients have come to appreciate at

Evangelical Community Hospital.

Fiscal StewardshipEvangelical Community Hospital continues to exceed financial

expectations, building on its solid fiscal foundation in the face of

unprecedented regulatory, industry, and market factors.

Along with the continued deployment of the Affordable Care Act,

there is a deepening correlation between quality outcomes and

reimbursement levels, a heightened expectation for transparency

in all facets of the operation—from treatment results to billing—as

well as an increased focus on mergers and acquisitions.

Standing above these factors, the Hospital ended Fiscal Year 2014

by improving its already healthy balance sheet. Cash and short-

term investments doubled, while investments set aside for future

capital improvements grew from more than $67 million to more

than $75 million.

Strategic acquisitions have Evangelical positioned to enhance its

market footprint and continue positive growth trends through Fiscal

Year 2015.

Purchased in January 2014, SUN Orthopaedic Group, Inc., with its

eight board-certified surgeons, is the region’s premier bone and

joint practice. The physicians and specially trained practitioners at

OB/GYN Associates of Lewisburg were brought under the Hospital’s

umbrella at the close of Fiscal Year 2014. Both are thriving practices

with high levels of brand equity in the market.

Newly acquired revenue sources, continued investment in

advanced technology, and a sustained focus on a positive patient

experience have Evangelical poised for yet another successful year.

contributes to the health and well-

being of our community by providing

educational programs, preventative

screenings, and affordable and

accessible healthcare.

The Hospital’s Community Health

and Wellness department offers vital

services to the Central Susquehanna

Valley, reaching thousands of people

each year through programs such

as the men’s and women’s health

screenings, vaccination clinics,

support groups, car seat inspections,

CPR training, and more.

In Fiscal Year 2014, Evangelical

invested more than $22 million in

community benefit initiatives. The

Hospital continued its prevention-

focused outreach by educating more
