“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it

bends towards justice.” - Martin Luther King

We are beings who are blessed with many gifts. We arebeings who have been created in the image of the divine.We are beings who have been given the opportunity tolive and breathe in this creation that we call our world.Hence, the responsibility that falls on our shoulders is agreat one. And, may I remind you that, to whom muchis given, much will be required.

It is in that spirit that we are required, as children ofGod, to assure that all our brothers and sisters, and theirchildren, live in a world where justice is not a mere ideaor something to hope for, but a reality which was paidfor by Christ’s journey to the cross.

All lives matter, and it's our responsibility to assure thatevery being is treated with fairness, and is given theopportunity to live out his or her life to its fullestpotential, and not live in fear of being judged, or beingtreated differently for their ethnicity, the color of theirskin, or whom they choose to love.

One of the most beautiful compliment I've heard overand over again about our Echo Park UMC family is thatwe are a church-loving congregation. We are by nomeans a perfect body, but we strive constantly to bewelcoming and loving, and to live out our faith. Wehave welcomed the stranger, we have fed the hungry andthirsty among our neighbors and transients both literallyand spiritually.

Let this season of Resurrection be one of awakening inour lives and in the lives of our loved ones. Let's live outour lives assuring that the arc of moral justice, althoughsometimes long in coming, always bends towardsjustice.

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hillcannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lampand put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on itsstand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.In the same way, let your light shine before men,that they see your good deeds and praise yourFather in heaven.” - Matthew 5:15-16

Jesus came as the light of the world and expects hisfollowers to walk in his light. Having Jesus in our heartmakes us the light of the world. We are to shine the lightof Jesus wherever we are. Our church should be the lightthat shines throughout the whole city. We do missionand service in our community to shine the light of JesusChrist so that people in our community will know ourFather in heaven. It is the very reason why God has putus here. A church will die if it is not doing the kind ofmission and service work that Jesus talked about anddemonstrated. A church without mission may not dieovernight, but it will die slowly and surely. It willgradually waste away as all its energies and resourcesturn more and more inward on itself and the churchbecomes merely a monument of the work.

Our church has started some outreach projects. From lastyear October we have been cleaning the sidewalks andstreets of our neighborhood on the first and thirdSundays of the month. Many people in ourneighborhood have stopped and thanked us for the goodwork. Once a man gave $5 to the church to express hisappreciation to us. A few weeks ago there was a manwho was not a member of our church, yet he helped uswith a clean-up. When I asked him who he was, he saidthat he worked at the Taix restaurant near our church,and that his boss had told him to go and help us. Hebrought trash bags, and then took the filled trash bagsand dumped them in the trash bin. Several corners of ourneighborhood have become clean because people ofEcho Park UMC are shining the light by good deeds.

In February, we started the Jericho Prayer Walk. Idivided up our neighborhood into nine sections and hadtwo to three people sign up to walk around a section andpray over the households in that section. Then they puta door hanger on the front doorknob that says, “AnAngel from Echo Park United Methodist Church passedby your house and prayed for you and your family. Ifyou need prayer, please call us. Our head pastor willpray for you. May God bless you.” Twenty-six peoplesigned up and walked around their particular section

Tener a Jesús en nuestrocorazón nos hace la luz del mundo. tenemos que hacerbrillar la luz de Jesús donde quiera que estemos. Nuestraiglesia debe ser la luz que brilla por toda la ciudad.Hacemos misión y servicio en nuestra comunidad parabrillar la luz de Jesucristo, para que la gente en nuestracomunidad conoscan nuestro Padre en el cielo. Es lamisma razón por la que Dios nos ha puesto aquí. Unaiglesia va a morir si no lo está haciendo el tipo de misióny el trabajo de servicio que Jesús habló y demostró. Unaiglesia sin misión no morirá durante la noche, peromorirá lenta y segura. Se gastará gradualmente a medidaque todas sus energías y recursos se vuelven más y máshacia el interior sobre sí mismo y la iglesia se conviertesimplemente en un monumento de una obra. Nuestra iglesia ha iniciado algunos proyectos deextensión. Desde el año pasado en Octubre estamoslimpiando las aceras y calles de nuestro barrio en elprimer y tercer domingo del mes. Mucha gente ennuestro barrio se han detenido y nos dieron las graciaspor el buen trabajo. Una vez un hombre le dio $ 5 a laiglesia para expresar su agradecimiento. Hace unassemanas hubo un hombre que no era miembro denuestra iglesia, sin embargo, él nos ayudó con lalimpieza. Cuando le pregunté quién era, dijo quetrabajaba en el restaurante Taix cerca de nuestra iglesia,y que su jefe le había dicho que fuera y nos ayudara.Llevó bolsas de basura, y luego tomó las bolsas debasura llenas y los arrojó al recipiente de la basura.Varias esquinas de nuestro barrio se han limpiadoporque la gente de Echo Park UMC están brillando a laluz de las buenas acciones.

with prayer on February 14. We will do this prayer walkevery second Sunday of the month. As we plant theseeds of prayer, God will do His good work in ourcommunity.

In April, we will participate in the Laundry Love.Partnering with St. Athanasius Episcopal Church, wewill help people who are in need in our community bydoing their laundry for free at Aroma Laundromat,located at 1448 North Alvarado Street. The first LaundryLove will be on April 19, from 6 to 8:30 pm. We needvolunteers who will be at the Aroma Laundromat to helppeople do their laundry and talk to them to build arelationship with them. We also need refreshments,funds for the laundry, and prayer.

These are all good opportunities to share the love ofJesus Christ with small things. These are also practicalways to shine the light of Jesus Christ that will brightenthe community. I hope and pray that the faithfulmembers of our church will be willing to participate inmore than one project.

I dream that each and every one in our church will shinethe light so brightly that our city will be transformed tobe “The City of God.” God will reign in our city andover everyone who lives here. Echo Park will become agood model city of the Kingdom of God on earth.

Faithful members of Echo Park UMC, do not keep yourlight under a bowl. Let it shine so that the city and wholeworld will see His light through you.

We continue to pray for ED SALAMAT who underwent anopen heart quadruple by-pass surgery on February 17, andwas discharged from the hospital to his home on February 22,to recuperate.....

SALLY CASE has resigned from her position as ChurchTreasurer in order to care for Ed Salamat and other membersof her family. We thank her for the excellent work she hasdone during her term. As of this writing, we are stillsearching for someone to replace her. Former TreasurerSHERMAN McCLELLAN will discharge the duties of theposition as Interim Treasurer.....

The Stewardship and Finance Committee urges us to step upour pledges and increase our giving in order to clear up our$15,000.00 debt to the California-Pacific Annual Conference.We welcome suggestions or ideas to raise funds to meet ourfinancial needs. FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

After decades of weathering, thehorizontal bar that forms thecross on top of the dome on ourchurch fell off. It was crackedand dry-rotted badly and neededto be replaced with a new pieceof lumber. We made a new crossto be attached to be attached tothe existing 6" x 6" uprightupright on top of the dome. Thehard part was climbing to thetop of the dome and making theattachment. Mark Phillips,assisted by Daniel Crouse, madethe scary ascent with LaDellStapp’s cordless screw driver, abucket of roofing cement, and acan of paint. Everything had tobe pulled up by ropes, withWalter Elmer securing the toolsand materials to the ropes fromthe sidewalk on the ReservoirStreet side of the church. Markand Daniel spent two hours ontop of the dome installing thenew cross, patching the crackson the upright post, and doingsome painting, the first timethey went up to the roof.

Finally, on February 18, they completed the dome project.The final coat of white paint has been put on the cross, andwater-proofing has been done on the dome. It was anothertwo hours spent up on the roof, with lots of ladder climbing

and pulling tools and supplies up with ropes, so we givemany, many thanks to Mark and Daniel for a job very welldone!

Even with the little rain we’ve had this winter, the grass inboth the front and back yards of our parsonage has grownvery well. It needed cutting and we thank LaDell Stapp andWalter Elmer for doing the job. The lawn of the parsonagenow really looks great and is in excellent condition.

Nobody likes to go down in the window wells along the rampto clean out the dirt and trash. Getting the iron grates off thewindow wells is a big job in itself. To prevent water fromaccumulating in the window wells and leaking into the churchbasement, Mark Phillips and Brian, a young man who iscompleting his community hours requirement, cleaned all thewindow wells on the ramp side of the church. Many thanks tothem for doing a dirty, hard job that need to be done.

The Board of Trustees again thank Sherman McClellan forgiving an afternoon to complete several jobs at the church.Sherman changed a burned-out light bulb in the mainSanctuary, installed a new faucet in the women’s restroom,and adjusted the hardware of the parking lot gates so that theyopen and close freely. Sherman also installed new flushvalves on both toilets in our parsonage as they were shuttingoff properly. Thanks, Sherman, for accomplishing all thesejobs that keep our church always in good condition.

Muchas gracias a ellos para hacer un trabajo sucio ydificil que se necesitaba hacer.

We are now in the Lenten season, and the United MethodistWomen are very active. My personal feeling about Lent is notwhat I am giving up. Rather, it is what I am I doing to helpothers during this season? On February 20, JenniferCeniceros, Jesse Gilbert, Marcy Souffle and myself attendeda panel discussion on “Human Trafficking,” where welearned how prevalent it is right here in Los Angeles, as wellas what we can do to help young women and children whoare victims of this evil activity.

This coming March 6 will be United Methodist Sunday atEcho Park United Methodist Church. Our Guest Speaker willbe Rev. David Farley, our former Pastor, who is the Directorof Justice and Compassion Ministries of the California-Pacific Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church.Our theme for that UMW Sunday Worship is: “The Vision:justice and compassion for all men and women, for children,

Ahora estamos en el tiempo de Cuaresma, y las MujeresMetodistas Unidas son muy activas. Mi sentimiento personalsobre la Cuaresma no es lo estoy renunciando. Más bien,quees lo que estoy haciendo para ayudar a otros durante estatemporada? El 20 de febrero, Jennifer Ceniceros, JesseGilbert, Marcy Souffle y yo asistimos a una mesa redondasobre el "Tráfico de Personas", donde aprendimos Cuanfrecuente esta pasando aquí en Los Ángeles, así como lo quepodemos hacer para ayudar a las mujeres jóvenes y niños queson víctimas de esta mala actividad.

El próximo 6 de marzo será el domingo de Metodistas Unidosen Echo Park IMU. Nuestro orador invitado será el Rev.David Farley, nuestro antiguo pastor, quien es el Director deMinisterios de Justicia y la compasión de la ConferenciaAnual California-Pacífico de la IMU. youth, adults and seniors, all over the world.” March 6 isalso Rev. David Farley’s birthday, and we will celebrate thisat our Church Potluck and Party after the Service. In theUnited Methodist Worship Calendar, March 6 is also “OneGreat Hour of Sharing” Sunday. Pastor David has graciouslyasked that instead of giving him personal gifts, donations toEcho Park UMC be made in his honor. Special envelopes willbe available at the back of the Sanctuary for this. Please makechecks payable to Echo Park UMC.

On Saturday, March 12, we will have our semi-annualRummage Sale. Food for thought: What we may think of asrummage, others may think of as treasures. We will need helpon Friday, March 11, to set up, and on Saturday, to help sellthe goods and to clean up. The proceeds will be split betweenmission projects and the general fund of the church.

The West District United Methodist Women have beenawarded the Reading Banner for 2016 (thanks in part to thosewho were merged to the West District from the old Santa AnaDistrict). The North District UMW took the Children’sBanner. Ladies, we need to continue reading booksauthorized by the UMW in order to keep the banner. Thisyear, we will need to work harder in order to obtain theChildren’s Banner for 2016.

Upcoming events: Friday, March 4 - World Day of PrayerCelebration at the First AME Church in Los Angeles;Sunday, March 13, 3:00 p.m. - Cal-Pac Korean WomenConcert at Wilshire United Methodist Church; Saturday,April 9, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon - West District UMWSpiritual Retreat at Compton United Methodist Church.

From Friday, April 22, to Sunday, April 24, the WesternJurisdiction of the United Methodist Women will have theirConference in Salt Lake City, Utah. Jesse Gilbert and myselfare planning on participating. We also plan on visiting theUMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) Officethere. We are being asked to bring health kits to theconference, so we have scheduled to work on health kits atour April monthly meeting.

Ladies, our UMW Unit at Echo Park UMC meet on thesecond Sunday of every month after Fellowship Time. Allwomen are invited; senior and adult women, young girls,including teenagers, are especially welcome.

Vamos a necesitar ayuda para elviernes, 11 de marzo para instalar, y el sábado, para ayudar avender las mercancías y despues para limpiar. Las gananciasse dividen entre los proyectos de misión y el fondo general dela iglesia.

El districto Oeste de las Mujeres Metodistas Unidas han sidogalardonados con el estandarte de lectura de 2016 (gracias enparte a las que se unieron para el Distrito Oeste desde elantiguo barrio de Santa Ana). El Distrito UMW Norte tomóel estandarte de los Niños. Damas tenemos que seguirleyendo libros autorizados por el UMW con el fin demantener el estandarte. Este año, tendremos que trabajar másduro con el fin de obtener el estandarte de la Infancia para el2016.

Desde el Viernes, 22 de abril hasta el Domingo, 24 abril laJurisdicción Oeste de la Mujeres Metodistas Unidas tendránsu conferencia en Salt Lake City, Utah. Jesse Gilbert y yoestamos planeando en participar. También Estamos pensandoen visitar la oficina del (Comité Metodista Unido de Auxilio)UMCOR. Se nos está pidiendo llevar equipos de salud a laconferencia, por lo que hemos programado para trabajar enequipos de salud en nuestra reunión mensual de abril.

Damas nuestra Unidad de UMW en Echo Park UMC seencuentran en el segundo domingo de cada mes después deltiempo de compañerismo. Todas las mujeres son invitadas;las personas mayores y las mujeres adultas, las jóvenes,incluyendo adolescentes, son especialmente bienvenidos.
