We Go With Jesus!
When we think about doing mission work, most people think about spending a lot of money and going over seas in order to do this mission work. What is a little bit ironic is the fact that the United States is becoming more of a mission field than other countries. Our small group Bible study on Sunday evenings is going through a study on the book “Joining Jesus on His Mission”. This book addresses the fact that we need to be everyday mis-sionaries where God has placed us in life. With this said, we need a change in our mindset in order to under-stand what an everyday missionary looks like.
Over the next three months we are going to look at three mission mindset changes. The first mission mind-set change is, “We don’t go for Jesus, we go with Je-sus”. I have been guilty of this and you probably have been as well. We talk a lot about the Christian life in terms of us going out and doing the work for Jesus that He has called us to do. To be honest, this can be over-whelming. We are not asked to go out for Jesus. We are simply called to go with Him. He is already at work in people’s lives. He is at work in your neighbors’ lives. He is at work in the lives of coworkers, family members, the parents you sit in the stands with at your children’s sporting events, the people you are in civic organizations with. Whoever you are around on a daily basis, Jesus is already at work.
Jesus simply invites us to open our eyes. Be ob-servant of the people that are placed in our path each day. Jesus is doing the hard work of softening the heart through the power of the Holy Spirit. We have the easy task: being a neighbor. People notice when we take the time to be a good neighbor or friend. People notice when we stop for a few minutes to talk with them about something that they are dealing with in their life. People notice acts of kindness and concern. When you are observant and being a good neighbor, you never know when you might have the person who will be receptive to hearing the Gospel saving message of Jesus Christ.
May we continue to go with Jesus and to share the message of our risen Savior with A Heart for Hamilton County and the World!

Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken
By John Newton
1779
Glorious things of Thee are spo-ken, Zion , city of our God;
He whose word cannot be broken Formed thee for His own abode.
On the Rock of Ages founded, What can shake thy sure repose?
With salvation’s walls surround-ed, Thou may’st smile
at all thy foes.
See, the streams of living waters, Springing from eternal Love,
Well supply thy sons and daugh-ters, And all fear of want remove.
Who can faint while such a river Ever flows their thirst assuage?
Grace which, like the Lord, the Giver, Never fails from age to age!
Round each habitation hovering, See the cloud and fire appear
For a glory and a covering, Showing that the Lord is near!
Thus deriving from our banner Light by night and shade by day;
Safe they feed upon the manna Which He gives them
when they pray.
Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God! Psalm 87:3 (NKJV)
If you visit England in the future, Plan to stop in quaint little Olney, home of John Newton And William Cowper. An excellent mu-seum is dedicated to them, housed in Orchard Side, Cowper’s home on Olney’s triangular marketplace. Cowper had moved to Olney to be un-der the ministry of John Newton, who preached in the village church. The two became friends and would often meet in the garden between their houses for long talks. Out of their friendship came one of history’s most famous books-the Olney Hymns, first published in 1779.
Prior to his conversion, Newton had been a slave trader on the high seas, and a very wicked man. After his conversion, he became a power-ful preacher a leader in the fight against slavery, and a renowned hym-nist. His most famous hymn, “Amazing Grace,” is an expression of his testimony.
This song, “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken,” Number 60 in the Olney hymnal is a powerful hymn about the church, which is meta-phorically described here as “Zion.” It originally had five verses, built around seven biblical passages, which Newton footnoted in the original hymnal.
If you hear this hymn being played in Germany, you’d better stand to your feet for you’ll be hearing the German national anthem. Franz Joseph Haydn’s majestic composition, AUSTRIA, was played for the first time on February 12, 1797, to honor the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef on his birthday. It was an immediate Hit, and was almost instantly adopted as the Austrian national anthem. Thus it remained until Adolf Hitler rose to power. In 1938 when Austria was annexed into the Ger-man Third Reich during the Anschluss, Hitler not only seized Austria, but he seized AUSTRIA, adapting Haydn’s musical score as the Nazi national anthem.
After the War, the Austrian people, feeling they could no longer use Haydn’s tune as their national song because of its association with the Nazis, chose another melody. The Germans, however, kept Haydn’s tune, AUSTRIA as their own anthem.
As far back as 1802, however, Christians in America and Britain were using Haydn’s AUSTRIA as a hymn accompaniment, and this ma-jestic composition is best known today as the melody for John Newton’s famous hymn about the church of Jesus Christ, “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken.”

Gutenberg
Printing Press
The printing press was invented in the Holy Roman Empire by the German Johannes Gutenberg around 1440, based on exist-ing screw presses.
Gutenberg, gold-smith by profession, developed a printing system, by adapting existing technologies to printing purposes, as well as making inven-tions of his own.
His newly devised hand mould made pos-sible the precise and rapid creation of met-al movable type in large quantities.

As members of St John we send
monthly support to Vicar Dagan
Siepert. He is a son of the con-
gregation from St. Paul’s Luther-
an Church, Aleman.
“Vicarage is going extremely
well, but the work is difficult. I
serve two congregations, one
that has about 30 in attendance
on a weekend and the other
with about 40. I truly am
blessed because I get to see the
joys and struggles of ministry
in a variety of settings. And I
preach almost every Sunday!”
“Thank you all for your con-tinued prayers and generous financial support. Vicarage has been going very well. I cannot believe that I only have four months left! I look forward to coming home to Texas sometime in Novem-ber or December……”
In His Love, Dagan W. Siepert Vicar

From the Board of Finance: Greetings to you in Jesus name,
As we begin the budget process of St. John for the year 2018, we are aware of the considerable discrepancy between contributions and the budget that was adopted for 2017. The committees of the congregation will soon be planning for the upcoming financial year and submitting their proposed budgets for 2018.
All members should prayerfully be reminded of the importance of giving to meet the church’s financial goals. God has opened many opportunities for ministry and outreach in our congregation and He will continue to bless our members with resources to share.
We are told that when we give to others, we give to God: “He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will regard him for what he has done.” Proverbs 19:17
We should give not because God expects us to, but out of the generosity of our hearts by returning to God a portion of His bounty. We are told: “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly, or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” II Corinthians 9:7
The apostle Paul tells us that we receive according to the way we give: “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.”
Giving on a regular basis serves as a constant reminder that God is our pro-vider. You alone must decide how to account for your stewardship of the blessings God gives you and how to honor Him with your offerings.
“This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people but is also over- flowing in many expressions of thanks to God.” II Corinthians 9:12
May you be richly blessed as your hearts overflow with thankfulness as good stewards of all that God has given you.
God’s Blessings,
The Board of Finance and Stewardship
Board of Finance:
The Board of finance will be holding a meeting with the chairperson
from each board to discus the 2018 budget. The meeting will be Tues-day, August 8th at 6:00pm in the FLC. If you cannot attend, please send
a member from you board.
In Christ,
The Board of Finance

A FESTIVAL OF HYMNS CELEBRATING REFORMATION 500 YEARS OF CHURCH
As part of Reformation 500 we at Faith Lutheran in Stephenville are planning a hymn sing. And we would like for you and your congregation to join us for that event!
Probable date for the hymn sing would be in late January or early February 2018. The event would most likely be on a Sunday afternoon; but we would like to know your thoughts on that since you'd be traveling to get here.
Thank you very much. I look forward to working with you and other mem-bers of your congregation on this joint event.
