The twenty-third production of the Doll
Shop comes to the North Central theatre this spring. It will be the ninth Doll Shop
directed by N.C. drama teacher Tom
Armitage, who revived Elsa Pinkham’s
school-wide variety show in 1984. The performance dates are April 28, 29, 30,
and May 5, 6, 7. Curtain time will be
7:30 p.m. (May 7 matinee at 2 pm)
“The story this year is very different,”
Tom explained. “In the past the plots
have been about the people who have owned the doll shop. This year there will
be no humans. All of the characters are
dolls, and it is a conflict between old
dolls, like Raggedy Ann and Andy, and modern action figure dolls.”
Tickets for all performances go on sale
April 25. Since all Doll Shop shows typically sell out, N.C. alumni are
encouraged to purchase tickets in
advance at the school Business Office. Tickets are tentatively priced at $7 for
general admission and $6 for senior
citizens. For more information, call the
N.C. Business Office at 509-354-6239.

her 14 Doll Shop productions was
performed as a benefit for the playfield fund. The second presentation of the
Doll Shop was in 1934. Thereafter, the
production was given every two years
through 1958. With Miss Pinkham’s retirement in 1959, it seemed the Doll
Shop’s doors had closed forever.
But following the 1984 revival of the
Doll Shop, Mr. Armitage has produced
the show every third year, ensuring all North Central students the opportunity to
appear in the show during their high
school years.
The Doll Shop casts have always
numbered in the hundreds, as both Miss
Pinkham and Mr. Armitage always found a part for any student who wanted
to participate. “There are no small parts,
only small people,” Elsa used to say. The
show serves as a link between generations of N.C. students who have
performed in the Doll Shop over the
decades.

• Indians win Groovy Shoes!
North Central students celebrated on the court at the Arena after winning the 21st annual “Groovy Shoes” competition with north side rival Shadle Park H.S. on Feb. 1. It
was a clean sweep for the Red and Black this year, as the Indians not only won the
spirit competition but also defeated the Highlanders in both the boys and girls basketball games.

• Senior Chosen for Science Camp
N.C. senior Forrest Ireland has been chosen to represent Washington State at the National Youth Science Camp in
West Virginia this summer. The annual camp gives two
students from each state a chance to exchange ideas with leading scientists. Forrest researches bison genetics with
other North Central students before and after school. He also
is a member of N.C.’s Knowledge Bowl and Science Bowl Teams, is in the Honor Society, and plays violin in the school’s advanced orchestra.
It has taken over 100 years, but the alumni of North
Central H.S. have finally established a scholarship fund. For many years, hundreds of high school alumni
associations across the country have been helping
graduates of their schools with college expenses. N.C.’s
alumni are late getting to the table, but now we have a way to help future N.C. graduates afford post high
school education in this era of ballooning college costs.
On November 29, 2010, the State of Washington
certified The N.C.H.S. Alumni Association Educational Foundation as a non-profit corporation. The Association
Council then appointed the following N.C. graduates to
the Foundation’s Board of Directors: Nathan Narrance, ’55; Gail Keeling, ’65; Steve McNutt, ’67; Alan Hanson,
’67, and Chris Krauel, ’78.
Through Washington Trust Bank and Edward Jones &
Company, the Directors have started an endowment fund
N.C. Alumni Newsletter Page 3
to receive donations from North Central alumni, former
staff members, and the general public. The Directors have made growing the endowment fund a priority.
Scholarships will thus be few and of moderate amounts
in the first few years, but as the fund grows, so will the
income and the number and dollar amounts of grants that
can be awarded in the future. Thus, N.C. alumni who make donations to the fund can be assured that their
contributions will help support the Foundation’s
scholarship program for decades to come.
The Directors will make every attempt to honor the wishes of donors who want to attach special conditions
to their contributions. No donation is too small. The
Directors hope that all North Central alumni will
contribute what they can to the Foundation fund so that together we can help future N.C. graduates achieve their
educational goals after high school.

N.C. Basketball Teams Place at State For the first time in school history, both of N.C.’s varsity basketball teams qualified
for the state tournament this year. And on
March 5 both the girls and boys squads won state trophies in the 3A division at the
Tacoma Dome.
For the girls team, the trip to state was a
historic one. It was the first time in the 37-year history of girls basketball in the state
that the N.C. girls earned a state berth. In
the tournament they won three of their four
games, losing only to eventual champion Holy Names in the semifinals. On the final
day, N.C. defeated Kamiakin 52-42 to
claim the third place trophy. N.C.’s Tara Van Weerdhuizen was named to the all-
tournament first team. Under coach Gabe Medrano, the team finished the season with
a school best ever record of 19-9. Riley Holsinger was named to the all-city first
team, and Medrano was selected as Greater
Spokane League Coach of the Year.
For the N.C. boys team, the state tournament has become a frequent
destination in recent years. Under Coach
Jay Webber, the Indians have gone to state in four of the last six years, taking home
three trophies in that time. Like the girls
team, the boys had to win multiple loser-
out games to make it to state this year. In the first round of the tournament, N.C.
defeated third-ranked Kamiakin 44-43 on a
last-second shot by Gunnar Swagar. The Indians also defeated Chief Sealth of
Seattle on their way to winning the sixth
place trophy.

A Brief History of North Central Basketball North Central had its first legitimate
basketball team in 1912-1913. That winter N.C. won the city championship by beating
Lewis & Clark three straight in a best of
five series.
Jack Friel, who later went on to glory
coaching at Washington State College, became N.C.’s coach in 1924. During his
four-year stay, he built N.C. basketball into
a state power. In 1928, his last at N.C., Friel led the team to its first state title. N.C.
won its second state championship two
N.C. boys basketball descended into a dark
age. No N.C. team had a winning record for over 30 years. Finally, after an absence of 55
years, the Indians returned to the state
tournament in 2006.
In the mid-1970s, Title IX made girls basket-
ball an official sport in the state. For over three decades, N.C.’s girls struggled in the highly
competitive Greater Spokane League. No N.C.
girls team won more than 12 games until the 2011 squad won 19 times on its way to taking third place in the state 3A tournament.
years later under
coach Red Reese, beating Walla Walla
29-25 in an exciting
final game.
Twenty years passed
before N.C. won its third, and last to
date, state title. In
1948, the Indians (right) defeated
Bremerton for the
title in Seattle.

Letters-to-the-Editor
• It was truly joyful seeing the picture of my classmates from the graduation Class of 1960! I've known Gail
since clear back to Havermale Junior High School, when we were in the Baker's Dozen singing group with Johnny Harris as our director. Strange too, that my mother graduated from NC in 1936 as a classmate with Mr.
Harris. History connects the circle sometimes. — Bobbee Carr
• I was thoroughly delighted to read Gail Goeller's well-written story of tribute, caring and faithfulness of
friends. I fondly remember each one in the picture and story so it warmed my heart to see these folks still have
such a bond and continue to make this a better world. John and Gail have dedicated their lives to assist others in
dealing with family issues of elder care and now how wonderful that God has brought them such comfort. I say bravo to each one; I give you a profound thank you and I pray our paths may cross again. With grateful
memories, — Linda (Poulin) Knudsen, Class of 1959
• About time we joined the N.C. Alumni Association. The article about “Doll Shop” reminded us of our
participation in Elsa Pinkham’s last “Doll Shop” in 1958. Janice has a niece and a nephew at N.C.: Samantha
(Sammy) and Jeffrey Eickstadt. Their mother, Jennifer (Sipe) Eickstadt is also an alum, as are their grandfather
and uncles, Gerald Sipe, Steve Sipe, and Roger Sipe. — Ivan and Janice (Sipe) Johnson, both Class of 1958
One of the primary goals of the N.C.H.S. Alumni
Association when it organized in 2009 was to provide financial assistance to current school teams, activity
groups, and individual students. The Association’s
Student Activity Fund is supported by donations,
fundraisers, and membership dues. At its March 7, 2011, meeting, the Association Council made the following
distributions from the Student Activity Fund.
• The North Central Band: $1,000 for the purchase of
band instruments.
• The Red Feathers dance team: $500 for the purchase of uniforms and payment of dance camp fees.
• The N.C. Knowledge Bowl Team: $300 for the
purchase of equipment.
• The North Central Choir: $300 toward expenses of
choir members attending the National Honor Choir
meeting in Washington, D.C.
• The N.C. Speech and Debate Team: $250 toward competition expenses.
