FROM THE DIRECTOR’S CHAIR

Mark Maron

Director

Illinois Region MARC

Illinois Chapter MAFCA

July 2011,

I am writing my column early this month and June is usually very quiet

for us. The summer is here... I think, and we are driving more than ever.

The MARC National is done and a great meet it was on the West Coast.

We hope to have a report on it soon from those that attended.

This month is busy, on the 16th we have our tech seminar at Ken‟s Barn

on rebuilding Distributors; this is a great hands on day and all of us

should be participating and having an extra part in our cars. If you have

not been to the barn, but have been to a tech seminar you are in for a real

treat and with some great advisors to help you.

One of our favorite events of the year is here; it is time for the MARC

PICNIC. If you have not RSVP‟d yet, please do so tonight, big Val, My-

self and our committee need to shop and get ready, so please, take the

time to fill out your form and let us know. This year we have the Don

Mormon Family Band as our entertainment and this is a real treat. Also

the club will be subsidizing the entire picnic for club members this year.

We do need to know the guest count and child count so please get to us

on that.

Don‟t forget to drive that Model A or any antique car to the picnic, that‟s

what we are here about anyway.

Thanks for your support as always and making this club and hobby the

best there is!

PS I will be out of town for our August meeting and see you later in the

month!

RUN TO BRIGHTON

Bob and Donna Hanselman set up a farewell tour significantly similar to the original “Run to

Brighton Tour” known as a red-letter day in the history of British motoring.

The Emancipation Run from London to Brighton celebrated the passing into law of the

“Locomotives on the Highway Act” which raised the speed limit for „Light Locomotives‟

from 4 miles per hour to 14 mph and abolished the requirement to be preceded by a man on

foot carrying a RED FLAG.

The original run of 33 cars was from the Metropole Hotel in London to the Metropole Hotel

in Brighton. Fourteen cars survived the first run of approximately 56 miles.

The „Run‟ currently attracts nearly 500 automobiles with an eligibility criteria that requires

the cars to be of four or three wheel design and that they were built prior to January 1, 1905.

The organizers now invite a small number of vehicles just out of period to join the celebra-

tion.

The Illinois Region MARC members, 30 in all, participated in a fun „Run‟, complete with the

weather similar to that of the English rain and mist of most Novembers. No one expected

such conditions in Mid-May.

We finished the „Run‟ in typical British style----at the “Pub” for a few pints.

Rear Frame Stampings

Carl Biederman from Anoka, Minnesota has found several Model "A" vehicles with some letter/s followed by a

number stamped into the rear area areas. The locations of the stampings have been noted on the rear end axle hous-

ing, top of the rear frame cross member and the right rear corner of the rear frame cross member (see picture below

from Eldon Frisk).

It is believed these stampings were used to correlate the number of leaves in the rear spring with the body to be

pulled and attached to that particular chassis.

NOTE: This is preliminary information, the list of stampings is incomplete and may not have been used by all as-

sembly plants for all years.

Following are the stampings noted to date with their interpretations:

.

Additional front and rear spring information for both Model A Passenger cars and Trucks may be found in the Restoration Guid-

lines and Judging Standards Area 4 – Undercarriage. The Restoration Guidelines and Judging Standards are available from the

MARC office for $25.
