    The Danish PoetMovie Review

Everything about The Danish Poetwas perfectly put together. The quirkiness of the

narrators voice, the child-like animations, the charming beginning to the movie, the attention-

grabbing organization of the story, and the random but fitting bits occurring simultaneously in

the back groundit was all so extraordinarily tied in with everything else that all pieces worked

together and added to the overall endearing effect of the movie.

Drunken people flailing in and out, kicking and laughing stupidly, a cow failing

repeatedly in several scenes, a goofy-looking dog licking a shoethe random funny bits in this

movie are only one of the reasons it is so enjoyable. What was great about this film was that even

though it was a simple animation with a stick-figure feel to it there was depth to the story. For

example, there was a lot of activity happening in the background in almost all the scenes, like the

random bits and the story with the dog. These small stories contributed to the humor did an

excellent job of filling in for the equivalent of extras in filmed movies.

The plot was relatively fast paced and credible, even with parts like the girls super long

hair or the cow falling and killing her husband. However, perhaps the best part about the plot

was the inventive portrayal of the events in the story. Starting with the delightful theory about

the seeds floating in the wind and continuing through a series of events until the ending was

incredibly effective, and much more powerful than if it had started from the other end. Having a

romantic tragedy of sorts was also a great call because it worked more than if it had just been a

comedy since the audience became emotionally invested in the endearing poet who struggled

with his poems and with the poor girl who waited and waited for a response. The main character

was difficult not to like, as the overwhelming evidence of an aw every five minutes clearly

showed. The dialogue, cleverly simple was beautifully written so that the vocal irony made the

humor subtle and therefore more effective.

Music, almost always a huge contributing factor in movies, was not really dominant in

this short film. It was simple and effective in all the right moments, even adding to the humor.

When the poet was sad the DUN, DUN.DUNDUN.DUN! was hysterical, as was the

jubilant tune they played when the poet was reunited.

The movie as a whole was witty, but the best part of the movie by far and the things that

were the most responsible for the comicality were the absurdities and inappropriately funny

things: when Kasper and Ingrid hugged above the dead poet, when her casket was dumped into

the grave, when the farmer was trying to get the cow to learn how to climb into the barn, and

when the drunkards kept parading in and out, these instances made the audience have a moment

amongst the sweet but heart-rending story that made the movie enjoyable and not all

disappointing. The Danish Poetis pure genius and so well put together that it is one of those rare

movies that can be watched tirelessly over and over again.
