This first phase involves 189 homes, part of a 1,100-home scheme by Muller Property Group on land between Peter de Stapleigh Way, Audlem Road and London Road in Stapeley. In March, Eric Pickles overruled a planning inspector and dismissed the appeal by Muller against Cheshire East Council’s decision to refuse permission for the scheme. But now the new Local Government Communities Secretary Greg Clark has decided to stop fighting the case, which had been due to be heard in the High Court later this month. Inspector David Nicholson had originally recommended approving the development because the council had not identified a five-year land housing supply. But Mr Pickles found that an emerging local plan from Cheshire East meant that the true picture on housing land supply had not yet been established. He said: “It should not be assumed at this stage that the development of this good- quality agricultural land in open countryside for uses which are not in accordance with the local plan should proceed on a piecemeal basis.” But Muller claimed that this reasoning represented a ‘clear inconsistency from the secretary of state’s previous approach’. A court order said the Secretary of State now accepts he did not appropriately refer to the terms of National Planning Practice Guidance policy. “In those circumstances, the parties are agreed the decision falls to be quashed for failure to consider the NPPG policy,” says the order. Cheshire East councillors Andrew Martin and Peter Groves, who represent the Nantwich South and Stapeley Ward, said they were very disappointed at the Government’s announcement. THE 36th World Worm Charming Championship took place at Willaston Primary School last month. The annual championship started shortly after 2pm and participants in each of the 144 plots had 30 minutes to collect as many worms as possible from their 3×3 metre plot. There were ‘traditional’ plots for teams of two and ‘tag-team’ plots for teams who wished to change their pairings throughout the

charming period. Techniques included vibrating a garden fork, whacking a tennis racquet and jumping up and down. The Chief Wormer’s trophy is usually given to the youngest wormer. But this year it was given to Pam, Pat and Anne-Marie, who have a combined age of 216, for the effort they put into their charming in collecting some 11 worms. The championships included entrants from as far afield as Holland, Switzerland, Hong Kong and India.

A charming day out

NANTWICH enjoyed another fantastic day of family entertainment as SkoolzFest returned to the town eariler this month. Over the past three years Nantwich pupils have gathered at the event to exhibit their talents. The organising committee alongside Nantwich Education Partnership (NEP) were delighted to show off the artistic side of pupils from the town’s primary and secondary schools. The event kicked off with the town’s Big Sing with some 15 schools coming together.

Children walked from St Mary’s Church through to the town centre, which provided a staged showcase for their talents. This featured various performances from the town’s school children, including Young Voices and a Battle of the Bands. Along with all this entertainment the town also staged fairground rides, stalls, games, coconut shy, tombola, refreshments and Punch and Judy shows throughout the day.• Pic courtesy of PDphotography, Nantwich Events Photography

NANTWICH’S Family Films @ 4 and Wyche Primary School have teamed up to tackle the issue of bullying. Bethan Crisfield, a volunteer from the local cinema project, has been working with Year 5 pupils at the school to produce some short anti-bullying films. Bullying is an ever-present problem not only in schools, but in colleges, universities, adult workplaces, and online. Research conducted by The Anti-Bullying Alliance has shown that over half of all children do not know how to get help if they themselves, or somebody they know is getting bullied. Addressing the issue in a creative way is exactly what Wyche Primary and the film project have been doing. The children have been making short films that deal with recognising, confronting,

solving, preventing and beating bullying in schools. Nantwich Family Films @ 4 is a community cinema project run by Nantwich Methodist Church offering a low-cost, local alternative for people to see family-friendly films, screened on the third Sunday of every month at 4pm. Geoff Etherton, the project’s co-ordinator, said: “Bethan is working with the children in a really creative way, helping them to put forward their own ideas about how to address bullying, to learn more about the issue, and to see their own film on the big screen!” Class teacher Natalie Reardon said: “Wyche Primary and Nursery School enjoyed getting involved with a wider community project. “The children thrived in the opportunity to share their strong views on anti-bullying through film making.”

PUPILS from Nantwich’s Brine Leas School tackled the dangers of legal highs in a presentation at a special one-day conference this month. Legal highs, self-harm and bullying all came under the spotlight as young students from across Cheshire East revealed they want to see greater protection and support for their vulnerable peers. Pupils from seven schools shared their thoughts and ideas with professionals from Cheshire East Council, the police, health trusts and other partner agencies at a one-day conference at Wychwood Park to discuss safeguarding and

protection of young people. Council Leader Michael Jones that there needs to be far more early intervention work to tackle the growing problem of self-harm, bullying and drug abuse. The borough has a higher than average number of hospital admissions due to self-harming. Cllr Jones said: “There will be many reasons for this and young people say that it is important that the focus should be on ‘why’ rather than the act itself. “I want to see my authority and our partners tackling the causes – not just the symptoms.”

Pupils take on hot topic

Summer talks Road closureMOTORISTS are being warned that Marsh Lane will be closed next month. The temporary closure of the road is expected to last from Monday August 10 to Friday August 11, 20 metres either side of Ravensmoor Bridge. The closure is necessary to enable Cheshire East Highways to carry out repairs to the damaged bridge parapet wall. Pedestrian access to any premises situated within the temporary closure will be maintained at all times. Access will be maintained for emergency vehicles and residents vehicles where possible.

Good causeNANTWICH’S Sainsbury’s store has named the Alzheimer’s Society as its Charity of the Year following a unanimous vote from customers in store and online. The store’s Olwyn Payton said: “From July 31 to August 2 we will be organising events in the foyer and an advice desk for customers.”

THIS year’s Rotary Young Designer Competition had a winning entry from Malbank School. Ella Jade-Harris took the Judge’s Award of Excellence for Graphic Design for her Hamster Home design. Contestants were judged on originality and innovation as well as presentation and construction.

PUPILS from Nantwich’s Malbank School spent a day at South Cheshire College last month checking out a variety of courses. Year 10 students turned their hands to hairdressing, hospitality and catering, health and social care and IT in the practical sessions. The visit was co-ordinated by the college’s school liaison team and students were able to choose different options during the day, chat to tutors look around the campus. High school pupils from across the region attend taster sessions and take part in college visits throughout

the year so they can make informed decisions about their next step when they leave school. The college’s director of admissions, advice and marketing Mike Finney said: “We were delighted to welcome the group from Malbank and hopefully, all the pupils that attended gained an extremely positive experience of South Cheshire College. “For many of the group, this was the first time they had visited our campus so it gave them a better idea of what to expect if they choose South Cheshire College as their next step.”

NANTWICH town centre will be resounding with the voices of traditional town criers on Saturday August 29. The competition, now in its fourth year, will see the town criers arrive at around 10.30am by vintage bus, performing a short parade around the town centre led by the Police Corp of Drums. The criers will the assemble before a team of five judges who will ensure they are carrying out their proclamations correctly. TV auctioneer Robert Stones from Dickinson`s Real Deal and Bargain Hunt will be one of the judges.

Crying out

AN early 20th century cheese vat is the latest acquisition of The Cheese and Dairy Room at Nantwich Museum. The vat, manufacturered by W H Smith of Whitchurch, Salop around 1910, is a superb example of its type. Such vats were widely used on local cheese-making farms for about 100 years from the mid nineteenth century and some are still in use today. The walls and bottom of the vat form a jacket which would have been filled with hot water to maintain the temperature required for the curd to form. The vat would have have held about 120 gallons of milk. Pictured is museum volunteer Brian Moore restoring the vat.

GREAT STARTDabbers boss delighted with pre-season victoriesNANTWICH Town boss Phil Parkinson has said he is delighted with the start to pre-season. A win away at Audley FC and an impressive 3-0 victory at home against Maccslefield Town have given the Dabbers boss plenty of reasons for optimism. Lewis Short grabbed a brace against the Silkmen in the first half before Lewis Shotton made it 3-0 midway through the second half. Matty Kosylo threatened early on for the hosts when he cut in from the right hand side and curled an effort just over Ritchie Branagans left corner. Macclesfield weren’t able to deal with Kosylo minutes later when he ran through down the wing with Diagne out of position having been drew into attack and a cut

back to Lewis Short put the home side in the lead in the 13th minute. The lead was doubled just before half time when Lewis Short found himself through on goal down the left hand side and calmly slotted it past Branagan to make it 2-0 in the 44th minute. In the 55th minute the Dabbers made it 3-0 when again Kosylo who troubled all evening played the ball across the box to Liam Shotton who finished it calmly. Earlier in the month the Dabbers put six goals past Audley on their first run out of pre-season. After the game Parkinson said: “Looking at the positives, everything we have been working on in training was showing through. “Our ball retention and formation going forward at

times was top draw at times. “I’ve always said that we are not all about individuals though, it’s a team effort, so even though some of the attacking players shone I thought our defenders showed good mettle also.”
