FAMILIES have been summoning superhuman powers as they visited Reaseheath College’s giant maze challenge this summer. The theme of the college’s popular holiday attraction has been super heroes and led visitors deep into the giant forage maize crop in search of Maze Man’s heroic friends such as Batman and Robin. Two mazes have been on offer, a full size version taking around two hours to complete and a smaller maze suitable for younger visitors. There was also an outdoor play area, crafts and mini

tractors and a picnic area. Maze team leader Rosanagh Bailey said: “We aim to provide a really good day out of affordable fun for all the family. “The Superhero theme is really popular and we’ve had a lot of visitors commenting on how much they’ve enjoyed their day with us.” Families have also been able to combine their visit with a trip round Reaseheath’s zoo, which is connected to the maze by a nature trail. The zoo is based at the college’s animal management centre, which houses over 1,000 animals.

Don’t Despair - Repair

THE family of a 21-year-old who died in a car crash have paid tribute to their loving son. Declan Hassall’s car collided with a lorry on London Road in Stapely, in Nantwich, at 4.20am on Wednesday, August 5. Declan, pictured with is mum Karen, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. In a statement, his family said: “He was a loving son of whom we are and will always be immensely proud of. “Declan will also be dearly missed by his two close brothers, aunty, uncle, cousins, beautiful girlfriend, work colleagues and all his friends. “He will always be remembered as a talented young man, who crammed absolutely everything he

could into every day, with the people he loved the most. “Our grief as a family is total. We would appreciate being allowed to mourn privately. “A life all too short, which will always be remembered. Rest in peace son.” The driver of the lorry sustained serious injuries in the crash – and was taken to hospital for treatment. An investigation has been launched and anyone with information should call police on 101 quoting incident number 105 of August 5.

THIS year’s Big Day Out in Nantwich proved a hit once again last month. The Auguest event at the Nantwich Show ground featured a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party in aid of St Luke’s Hospice and Macmillan. Attractions this year included bubble football, paintballing, archery, quad bikes and giant inflatables. There were also arts and crafts for children, soft play, party games, treasure hunt, film quiz, pizzas, BBQ, real ale and cocktails hosted by organisations from across Crewe and Nantwich. An event spokesman said:

“We had over 70 different organisations represented on the day, all who were either supporting the event as a corporate sponsor or fund raising or hosting an activity on behalf of their own charity. “The weather was, unlike last year, on our side which was a huge bonus as we had around 1,500 people attend.” Musical entertainment came from local singers including Lucy Ollier, Jon Tarplee, Tim Lee and Josh Whittaker and the Funky Choir and Nantwich Young Voices Summer School. • Pic courtesy of Nantwich Events Photography

St MARY’S Church in Nantwich is to benefit from a council grant. Community, voluntary and faith groups across the area are to benefit from more than £44,000 of grant funding from Cheshire East Council. The second round of Community Grants for 2015/2016 has seen 28 more organisations receive awards. Grants are available to support community, environmental, sports, arts, heritage and play projects. The church successfully applied for a community grant of £5,000 towards its £126,000 project to install new toilets and disabled access to provide better facilities for a wide range of local community users and visitors. The grant is conditional on securing funding for the total project costs. Councillor Les Gilbert said: “Community grants provide a lifeline for many local groups who simply wouldn’t be able to survive, let alone thrive, without our support.”

NANTWCH Mayor Andrew Martin has urged residents to shop local. Cllr Martin this month visited Nantwich Market to speak to traders. Dating back to 1867 the market has always bustled with activity, but whilst Saturdays have a roaring trade, traders are looking to boost numbers on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The market offers an array of fresh produce locally sourced, from fruit, vegetables and plants to dairy produce and fish, and gifts and accessories through to

pictures and framing. A spokesman for the traders said: “Markets are different to high streets, there is a good atmosphere, people come along to chat, have a coffee and make friends, it’s a good community feel.” Cllr Martin said: “We have a beautiful town, with many independent retailers and our market is a jewel within this crown. “With the convenience of superstores and internet shopping, local shops and markets are often overlooked with a national downturn in economy.”

Cash boostFUN is the key note of the Nantwich at Play exhibition at Nantwich Museum, which runs until Saturday 19. Taking as its theme changing social influences, the exhibition illustrates how the people of Nantwich have spent their leisure time through the ages. Nick and Sarah, two cartoon characters drawn by resident artist Les Pickford, guide visitors through the exhibition. They can be found at early fairs, at the horse races, visiting the cinema, playing sport and going on excursions. Visitors can get involved through a variety of games. A superb painting by Les Pickford depicting a medieval fair near the parish church is also on display. A copy kindly framed by the Love Art Gallery is being raffled during the exhibition. The free exhibition is complemented by a series of talks covering topics such as Victorian entertainment, at the races and children at play.

THE Dabbers have enjoyed a free-scoring start to the season, playing their part in early goal fests. In their first midweek fixture of the season, away at Stourbridge FC, Nantwich scored through Matt Bell, Darren Thornton and Matty Kosylo. But despite scoring three excellent goals on the road, Nantwich were beaten 4-3 at the War Memorial stadium. Following the excellent 6-3 victory over Stamford, boss Phil Parkinson made just one change PJ Hudson starting ahead of Kosylo. Despite playing some excellent football the Dabbers were unable to take three points. The good form in front of goal comes after a pre-season that saw the Dabbers net 17 times in eight games.

And Parkinson said he has high hopes for his first full season in charge. He said: “I want to be in and around the play offs. I want the team fighting to get into those top 6 positions. “I don’t think we will be a permanent fixture in the play-off positions throughout the season because in truth that will would be a tough ask. “I’ve got to be realistic as we weren’t anywhere near the playoffs at any point last season. “Saying that, with the size of the club and the facilities we have got, I really believe we should be fighting to get into those play off places. “So if we are in and around there come Christmas, I will be a very happy man and that is when you want to push on. “If we are not, then I will need to reassess.”
