WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

Nancy Huckeby Lawrence, KS

Lori Bradley Newnan, GA

Sending a big thank you to Ted Brooke who transcribes the Newnan Herald and generously allows it to be in each quarterly. In this issue there is a letter from a Lieutenant from Boston, Massachusetts on page 15 relating “Sherman’s Army of Robbers” and what they were instructed to do on said march. It really gives an insight into what happened from the Union side. Please note on page 9 of the Deaths in Coweta County, I discovered that Maggie McCOLLUM was buried in Mt. Gilead Cemetery in Raymond, GA. However, in the Coweta County Cemetery Book on page 424, her name is in a section entitled

“Oak Hill Cemetery” in a list stating “This is a partial list of burials found in cemetery books from Sexton’s office. It includes those burials in unmarked graves, etc.” I hope this will be helpful to any relatives of Maggie McCOLLUM.

MARK YOUR CAlENDAR

Our next meeting will be Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. at the Genealogy Library at 8 Carmichael Street, Newnan GA, 30263. Our speaker will be Roger SMITH, from Douglas County, Georgia, and he will be talking about headrights, land grants and land lotteries. This is an open meeting for everyone so invite someone to come with you!

F. Y. I. The Coweta County Genealogical Society will be sharing a booth with Brown’s Mill at the

State Fair in Perry, Georgia in October, 2017. Our exhibit will have different types of

research material used throughout years. We will also have artifacts used during the mid-

and late-1800's.

Editor’s Note: You may have noticed that I have used the symbols before and after this paragraph

a few times lately. Oddly enough, I heard about it on the TV show “Last Man Standing” several

months ago. “The hedera is a lovely piece of punctuation primarily found in early Latin and Greek

texts. Its purpose was to signify a break between paragraphs, as well as to look nice upon the page.”

Jonesboro, Nov. 9. A most disgraceful occurrence marred the peaceful serenity of Clayton’s election and it was due to the bulldozing methods of a few drunken men. A fuss arose outside of the courthouse, where the voting was being done, and Sheriff Hutchinson who was indoors, went out to quiet the riot. Instead of listening to the officer’s appeal for peace and quiet, the mob attached him and brought on a general fight. Captain J. O. HIGHTOWER, one of Jonesboro’s most esteemed and influential citizens, went to the aid of Sheriff HUTCHINSON, in trying to get the mob to quiet themselves and not to participate in a fight, which might result seriously for some one. They heeded nothing and brought on a most desperate fight, in which the sheriff was given a terrible blow over the head with a stick in the hands of some People’s partyite (sic),and Captain HIGHTOWER’s right jaw was frightfully gashed by a knife in the hands of another. Several of the attacking mob were also considerably shaken … (continued on inaccessible lower portion of page). W. H. PERSONS announcement for re-election to office of Ordinary of Coweta County. James STACY, Captain Winfield WOOLF of Marengo county, Ala., and Miss Mary Ida PINSON, eldest daughter of J.J. PINSON. Page 4) Sherman’s Army of Robbers. A Precious Document. From the Columbus (Ga) Sun and Times. The following letter was found in the streets of Columbia immediately after the army of Gen. SHERMAN had left. The original is still preserved and can be shown and substantiated, if anybody desires. We are indebted to a distinguished lady of this city for a copy sent with a request for publication. We can add nothing in the way of comment on such a document. It speaks for itself. Camp near Camden, S.C. Feb. 25, 1865 My Dear Wife – I have no time for particulars. We have had a glorious time in this State. Unrestricted license to burn and plunder was the order of the day. The chivalry (sic) have been stript (sic) of most of their valuables. Gold watches, silver pitchers, cups, spoons, forks, etc., etc., etc., as common in camp as blackberries. The terms of plunder are as follows: The valuables procured are estimated by companies. Each company is required to exhibit the results of its operations at any given place – one fifth and first choice falls to the share of the commander-in-chief and staff, one fifth to the corps commander and staff, one fifth to field officers of regiments, and two fifths to the company. Officers are not allowed to join these expedition (sic) unless disguising themselves as privates. One of our corps commanders borrowed a suit of rough clothes from one of my men, and was successful in this place. He got a large quantity of silver, (among other things an old time silver milk pitcher) and a very fine gold watch, from a Mr. De SAUSSURE (sic) at this place. De SAUSSURE is one of the F.F.V.’s (sic) of S.C., and was made to fork over liberally. Officers over the rank of captain are made to put their plunder in the estimate for general distribution. This is very unfair, and for that reason, in order to protect themselves, subordinate officers and privates keep back everything that they can carry about their persons, such as rings, ear-rings, breast-pins, etc., of which, if I ever live to get home, I have about a quart. I am not joking – I have at least a quart of jewelry for you and all the girls – and some No. 1 diamond rings and pins among them. Gen. SHERMAN has silver and gold enough to start a bank. His share in gold watches and chains alone, at Columbia, was two hundred and twenty five. But I said I could not go into particulars. All the general officers and many besides, have valuables of every description, down to embroidered ladies’ handkerchiefs. (I have my share of them too.) We took gold and silver enough from the d----d rebels to have redeemed their infernal currency twice over. This (the currency) whenever we come across it, we burned, as we considered it utterly worthless. I wish all the jewelry this army has could be carried to the “Old Bay State.” It would deck her out in glorious style; but alas! It will be scattered all over the North and Middle States. The d----d niggers, as a general rule, prefer to stay at home – particularly after they found out that we only wanted the able-bodied men, (and, to tell you the truth, the youngest and best looking women) – Sometimes we took off whole families and plantations of niggers, by way of repaying the secessionists. But the useless part of these we soon managed to lose – sometimes in crossing rivers – sometimes by other ways. I shall write to you again from Willmington, Goldsboro, or some place in North Carolina. The order to march has arrived, and I must close hurriedly. Love to grandmother and Aunt Charlotte – Take care of yourself and the children. Don’t show this letter out of the family. .Your affectionate husband, Thomas J. MYERS, Lieutenant, etc. P.S.I will send this by the first flag of truce to be mailed, unless I have an opportunity of sending it to Hilton Head. Tell Sallie I am saving a pearl bracelet and ear rings for her. But Lambert got the necklace and breast pin of the same set. I am trying to trade him out of them. These were taken from the Misses JAMISONS, daughters of the President of the South Carolina Secession Convention. We found (sic) these on our trip through Georgia. The Southern Exiles in Mexico. The Colony of Carlota Prosperous – Misrepresentation Corrected and the Truth Given – a card from Gov. HARRIS, Gen. PRICE and Others. Carlota, Mexico, Oct. 10, 1866. Editors Union and American: Gentlemen – We have noticed, with surprise a large number of gross misrepresentations and false reports, circulated in the United States by newspaper correspondents, with regard to the condition of affairs here, and cannot very well devise the motive moving parties to so persistently and industriously misrepresent our little colony. We have seen it recently stated in the papers of that country, on the authority of one of those veracious correspondents, that this village had been sacked and burned, and a large majority of its inhabitants carried off as prisoners by the Liberals. So far from this being true, there has never been a hostile foot within the limits of our quiet little village since the beginning of its settlement. The village and the colonists who have settled around it, have been free from acts of hostility from all quarters, and have been permitted to proceed in the improvement and cultivation of their respective places without interference or molestation. It is true that some twenty-odd American colonists were surprised, captured sand robbed at Omegha, and carried off as prisoners by a band of guerillas, in may last, and about a week afterward, six other Americans met the same fate at the hands of a squad of the same band, at La Puma, but each of these places are ten or twelve miles distant from our village, and within about three miles of each other. For years past Omealea has been held by the Liberals as a sort of outpost. Owing to their presence, the lands of Omealea, , though appropriated to colonization, , have not been surveyed or sectionalized preparatory to settlement. Early in the spring the Liberals withdrew, and twenty odd Americans immediately “squatted” upon the estate. Some of them are known to us to be men of character and worth, others known to have been somewhat dissipated and reckless. Some of the natives residing upon the estate having been harshly treated by some of the new settlers, complained to this guerilla band, then stationed not far below Omealea. The guerillas immediately moved upon the new settlement, and finding the men at their respective places, picked them up one by one, until, in a few hours, they had possession of the whole party. These Americans were detained by this band as prisoners for a few weeks, but upon their reaching the presence of Gen. GARRIS, of the Liberal army, they were immediately set at liberty, the party that captured them severely denounced for having interfered with them, and they (illegible) that so far from being opposed to American colonization in Mexico, the Liberal part would give it all the protection and encouragement in its power. They were most kindly treated by Gen. GARRIS, and every facility for returning to their new homes that the General could give was promptly furnished, but most of these gentlemen returned to Cordova disgusted with Mexico and Mexicans, and a majority of them have since returned to the United States, with feelings too much embittered, and minds too much prejudiced, to give a fair and impartial account of this country., or the condition of affairs here. Another class of immigrants have returned to the States dissatisfied; mere adventurers, some who never accomplished anything, who came to Mexico without means and with no fixed purpose except the resolve that they would not work, and upon that (illegible). Members and friends of the Coweta County Genealogical Society are encouraged to participate in our Magazine. Submissions of

your records and research will convey to our nationwide readers your interest in preserving the history of Coweta County and the

surrounding areas.

The following are some suggestions and guidelines for submissions:

CHURCH RECORDS: Minutes, member lists, baptisms, marriages, cemetery records.

OLD OR CURRENT NEWSPAPER EXTRACTS: Obituaries, marriage write-ups, reunions and attendees. Newspaper articles need to

include the date and name of the Newspaper.

TOWN RECORDS: Tax records, public sales, licenses, court order and minute books, essay and stock market books, deeds and

mortgages, market ledgers.

WILL AND ESTATE RECORDS.

FAMILY RECORDS AND RESEARCH (GENEALOGIES): These should be documented with sources cited. These may include typed and

legible pedigree charts. Please remember that we cannot publish a lengthy genealogy. We request that you limit your document to

two or three pages. If more room is needed your document could be continued in future issues. The Editor of the Magazine will

reserve the right to edit the material for presentation and timeliness of publishing.

PHOTOGRAPHS: Retain the original photography; send only copies or scan and email them directly to the Editor. Identify as

completely as possible all persons, places, and dates. A family group should include names, dates, and/or other pertinent

information.

ARTICLES which give readers information on source materials or libraries.

General guidelines for articles and submissions:

** All materials, including Pedigree charts must be typed on one side of the paper using the Arial font. It would be preferable to

email the original Word (or similar) document directly to the Editor ([email protected]) to avoid any transcription errors.

Please list the SOURCES of your article, specific statements, direct quotations or extracts.

You, the contributor, are responsible for the accuracy of the information, opinions, omissions or factual errors. Names and

addresses of contributors will be printed with the published material. We know that you are interested in Coweta County and your

records may be the link another member has been searching.

The right to edit material for presentation is reserved by Coweta Courier’s Editor.

Disclaimer: The articles contained within the pages of the Coweta Courier are reprinted, with permission, from volunteer sources

and are intended solely for the use and enjoyment of members of the Coweta County Genealogical Society and the Society is not
