Thanksgiving, Christmas and the end of the calendar year usu-
ally represent a time of reflection on our “progress through
life” during the past twelve months. We, here at The Coweta
Shopper, have enjoyed a modest success and we are thankful. This
present economy is getting a little better, but still “walking with a
cane”. I’m optimistic things will continue to improve for all of us
next year. I would like to call this last Publisher’s Page of the year
my “Progress Report”.
The Shopper is now, on average, fifty per cent larger than when
I purchased it in April of last year. This increase, I believe, has taken place for three
reasons: faithful readers, savvy advertisers and a great staff. Everyday, someone will
tell me they enjoy reading the Shopper because they like the Armchair Gardener or
Encouraging Words, or this or that. We are trying to connect the citizens of our com-
munity with the products and services available, and do so in a positive, informative
and entertaining way. And our list of advertisers continues to grow. Successful busi-
nesses know the value of getting their message out, and The Coweta Shopper provides
that vehicle – that medium to almost fifty thousand separate homes and businesses.
They are, in effect, saying, “We are here to serve you and provide good value”. It is
our desire that these businesses prosper through the effective publicity provided by
our publication.
But it’s our staff I really want to thank. Roger Ray and Barbara Kirkman, who joined
us earlier this year, do an outstanding job of working with businesses to get their
message to you. Rusty Kuehl, our senior sales person, has been with the Shopper for
over two decades and really knows his stuff and has a faithful following of advertisers.
Ruth Harris Doyal blends the advertising, editorial and classifieds into something we
can then call a paper. She really knows how to get the job done well and with flair
and interest. It can get really stressful around here Mondays, our cut-off deadline
before we print, and I can tell you, “When Ruth ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy”!
But she sure can get out a good paper. Robin McLaughin recently joined the staff
and is in charge of looking after the
money. Robin wanted a part-time job
so she could spend quality time with
her husband and two children. She
is highly qualified and has a pleas-
ant personality. We just love her. I
feel blessed to have all these compe-
tent folks to work with. So, that just
leaves me. They let me write a few ar-
ticles and sign the checks, and that’s
just fine with me.

Holiday Weight-Gain Myth Is Bunk, Scientists Say
The common assumption that people put on 5 pounds over the holidays has been studied and actually found to be a myth, according to scientists at Vanderbilt Uni-versity. In fact, weight gain from Thanksgiving through New Year’s is, on average, closer to three-quarters of a pound to 1 pound.
And while this doesn’t sound as drastic, what typically happens with obesity is that people gain weight slowly and keep it on, said Vanderbilt obesity expert Roger Cone, Ph.D., professor and chairman of Molecular Physiology & Biophysics.
“It’s not just overeating at holidays. We are chronically overeating and under-exercising in this country,” Cone said. “And what happens then is your weight gradually creeps up.”
“If we do become obese, it’s because there is a minor difference between what we are consuming and what we are burning,” he said. “So the trick is to try to match your energy expenditure with your energy intake, to try to control your diet over-all and keep it healthy, and to try to up your activity until the two are in balance.”
Obesity leads to health-care costs that are 36 percent higher, on average, and a 77 percent increase in medication costs.
Liz Aleman, Healthy Children’s program manager for Monroe Carell Jr. Chil-dren’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, said obesity is the result of poor choices and behaviors more than genetics and metabolism, which means there is a lot a person can do to fight obesity.
Focus beyond the holiday table and overeating. The struggle with obesity is year-round.

New Year, New You!Many people invest time and energy in losing weight
after the holidays. If you’re one of them, the most im-portant thing to remember is to adopt healthy habits that last.
Glenda Kinder, nutrition and health education spe-cialist with University of Missouri Extension, suggests working on habits that result in both health benefits and weight loss. Weight-loss-only diets don’t work be-cause they focus on avoiding forbidden foods, not on enjoying delicious, nutritious foods.
When making diet changes, keep it simple. Focus on making different choices and examine the types of food you typically eat. Instead of highly processed foods made from white flour, look for ways to eat more whole-grain foods. It’s never been easier to find a tasty, whole-grain product in breads, cereals, crackers and other grain foods.
One of the best ways to satisfy your appetite is to eat a lean, healthy protein at each meal. Healthy proteins like chicken or turkey breast, fish, lean red meat, whey protein and nonfat dairy can help you stay on your diet plan. For some meals, choose a vegetable protein like nuts, beans, tofu or edamame. In general, a protein serving should not be more than the size and thickness of the palm of your hand. Proteins take longer for your body to digest, so you feel full longer. A meal high in protein and plant foods can prevent cravings for up to four hours.
Another practice for a healthy diet is to eat two colors at every meal. This means eating two or more servings of plants -- the fresher and more colorful the better -- morning, noon and night. Although juice is a healthy choice, it’s best to limit the amount consumed to no more than 3/4 cup a day. You’re better off eating the whole fruit -- it’s more satisfying and provides more fiber. There’s nothing like fresh produce for improving health and achieving weight loss. Vegetables are more important than fruits, so try to have at least one veg-etable at each meal.
If you follow these simple guidelines and incorporate great recipes like my Chicken and Apples with Lemon Balsamic Sauce, you can control hunger, and you’ll give your body the disease-fighting nutrients it needs.
Chicken & Apples with Lemon Balsamic SauceChicken breast meat is a healthy but rather bland source of protein. Pairing lean chicken with apples and spinach in this flavorful lemon balsamic sauce show-cases each ingredient and provides you with a lean pro-tein, fruit and a vegetable in one dish.
4 chicken breast halves with the skin but no bone (about 1 1/4 pounds)
1 1/2 tablespoons poultry seasoning1/2 teaspoon salt1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepperCooking-oil spray1/4 cup balsamic vinegar2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice1 teaspoon lemon zest2 cloves garlic, minced1 cup canned reduced-sodium chicken brothor chicken stock1/2 teaspoon agave syrup1 large Jonagold or Mutsu apple (8 ounces), cut in half, cored and sliced thinly 1 (16 ounce) bag triple-washed baby spinach
1 tablespoon whipped butter
Season chicken on both sides with 1 tablespoon 1. poultry seasoning, salt and pepper.
Spray a large skillet with the cooking-oil spray and 2. heat on high until hot; reduce heat to medium-high and add the chicken breasts, skin side down. Saute for 6 minutes or until the skin is nicely browned. Transfer with tongs or a slotted spoon to a plate and cover loosely with aluminum foil.
Turn the heat to high. Mix the remaining 1/2 table-3. spoon of poultry seasoning, vinegar, lemon juice and zest, garlic, broth and syrup in skillet until well-blended. Bring sauce to a boil.
Turn heat to low and add butter, stirring until 4. it melts. Add apples and half the bag of spinach and stir. Simmer for 6 minutes and add remain-ing spinach. Simmer another 3 minutes, until the apples soften and the sauce reduces slightly.
Add chicken, skin side up, to the pan, along with 5. any juices from the chicken plate. Cook 12 to 14 minutes over medium heat, or until chicken is just cooked through. Transfer chicken to each of 4 plates and top each serving with some of the sauce. Serve with whole-wheat pasta, couscous or brown rice. Serves 4.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Coweta Coun-
ty is a life-changing event that celebrates the lives of people
who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight
back against the disease. The Relay For Life of Coweta Coun-

While Selling
A Home”The holidays are fast approaching. Often home sellers are unsure of how to decorate the house for the holidays while having their house on the market. Below are a few tips on how to have the spirit of the season without undoing all the staging that has gone into preparing the house to sell.
“Less is more”• is the motto that one needs to follow while preparing a house to sell and the same applies to holiday decor. It may feel like you’re being a scrooge by not displaying every item that you have or that the kids have made over the past 18 years, but are you willing to risk losing a potential buyer because they couldn’t see past the holiday decorations?
First impressions begin at •the curb. Don’t cover the ar-chitectural details. Wrapping the house in lights and using plastic and inflated yard orna-ments can distract from the architectural details that a buyer needs to see. A simple wreath on the door, in keep-ing with the personality of the house (not the owners), is all
that is needed.
Tone down the size of the tree• . In place of a large tree that can take up valuable real estate in a room, try a 4 foot table top version. You may decide that you like it better. Instead of using colored bulbs, opt for clear or white bulbs for your tree.
Keep gifts under the tree • to a minimum and use coordinating wrap-ping paper to give a cohesive look. Or hide the gifts under the beds or in a closet.
The fireplace is a huge selling feature• and does not need to be hid-den with holiday decor. A simple wreath and poinsettias flanking the fireplace are all that is needed. If the kids want Santa to find their stockings, place one at the foot of each of their beds or wait until Christmas eve to place them on the mantle.
Greeting cards can easily become clutter• . Instead of displaying the greeting cards on the mantle or sideboard, etc. place them in a bowl or basket in your family room to enjoy while relaxing in the evening.
If you absolutely have to display all your decorative items, remove •an equal amount of “off season” accessories to keep the clutter to a minimum.
If it’s your turn to host the holiday party this year, s• ee if it is pos-sible to host holiday celebrations at a restaurant, banquet hall,
or trade years with another family member this year to minimize the amount of punch bowls, serving platters, and other kitchen items that cannot be stored away. If your family gives you any trouble about this, then tell them you will need to move in with them while your house is on the market and I’ll guarantee that they will be open to any alternative idea that you come up with.

Don’t Let Water Damage Dampen Your Day

Water damage can dampen your day. 250,000 families have their homes ruined and their lives disrupted each winter by water pipes that freeze and burst. When the outside temperature drops below freezing, water pipes with little or no insulation are likely to freeze and break.
Recovering from frozen pipes is not as simple as call-ing a plumber. An eighth-inch (3 millimeter) crack in a pipe can discharge more than 250 gallons (946 liters) of water a day. And, the result can include damaged floors, furniture, appliances and treasured family heir-looms.
There is an advantage to spending time preventing frozen pipes when you consider the soggy conse-quences of doing nothing. Minimize the chance your pipes will freeze with these simple reminders.
Before the cold hits:Insulate• pipes in unheated areas and those that run along outside walls, floors and ceilings. Seal• leaks that allow cold air inside near where pipes are located Disconnect• garden hoses.
When the mercury drops:Run a small trickle• of water from hot and cold faucets during extreme cold.Open • cabinet doors to allow heat to get to piping under sinks and vanities near exterior walls.
Before you go away:Set • the thermostat in your house no lower than 55°F (12°C).Ask• a friend or neighbor to check your house daily to make sure it’s warm enough orShut off• and drain the water system. Be aware that if you have a fire protection sprinkler system in your house, it will be deactivated when you shut off the water.
If your pipes freeze:Don’t take chances• . If you turn on your faucets and nothing comes out, seek the advice of a pro-fessional plumber. If you detect that your water pipes have frozen and burst, turn off the water at the main shut-off value in the house; leave the wa-ter faucets turned on.Never • try to thaw a pipe with a torch or other open flame. See the advice and assistance of a profes-sional plumber. Do not use electrical appliances in areas of standing water because you could be electrocuted.
Don’t let water damage dampen your day. Spend a few minutes protecting your water pipes to save time and expense down the road. Talk with an insurance professional for more tips and information for protect-ing your home or apartment.

Silvia Garcìa-Carreras Feenaghty is the named Newnan City Hall Artist of the Month for the month of December, 2011
Silvia, a native of the island of Cuba, has lived in Georgia since 1961 and in Peachtree City since 1969. She started painting as a teenager, with training in Ottawa, Canada and later on in her native Cuba, while acquiring her Home Economics degree with a Minor in Arts. She has attended classes in the past with many local and national art-ists but had set aside her brushes for a period of at least 20 years while her children were growing and later on while working in her husband’s accounting firm.
Silvia took up her art again after retirement, and has tuned her craft under the guid-ance of Tom Powers in Newnan, Georgia; Pam Hardin in Tyrone, Georgia; Helen Hayes in Newnan, Georgia and Marlin Adams in Barnesville, Georgia. After having concentrated her efforts as an Oil painter, Silvia is now experimenting with Oil Pas-tels. Many of Silvia’s paintings grace the homes of art patrons throughout the USA, Europe, Mexico and South America.
Silvia is a member of the Newnan-Coweta Art Association,. NCAA meets the third Thursday each month (from September through May) at the Harriet Alexander Art Center on Hospital Road at 7:00 p.m. Visitors and new members are welcome. Nothing says “Happy Holidays!” like a beautiful blooming plant, the smell of freshly cut greens, and the scents of the season. It’s so much fun to bring Nature inside our homes to decorate. We want our plants and greenery to look good throughout the season. Here are a few tips to help.
Paperwhite bulbs can be potted now through Feb-ruary. Prior to potting, keep them in a cool, dark, dry place. As soon as the tip begins to show, paperwhites can be placed in pebbles and water or potted in a good soilless mix. Keep them in indirect light until several inches of green shows. Now put them in sunlight, keep-ing them watered. If they are not in full sunlight, they will be weak and tall and floppy.
Amaryllis bulbs should be planted in a soilless mix with one to two inches between the bulb and the pot all around. One fourth to one half of the bulb should be above the top of the soil. Water the pot, but do not allow it to sit in water. Don’t water it again until green shoots appear. Put the pot in full sunlight in a normal temperature room. This keeps the stem shorter as well as helping produce flowers. Do not mist. While grow-ing, water regularly and have the plant well-drained at all times. After blooms fade cut off the flower stalks but leave the foliage. When using in arrangements, plug the hollow stem with cotton, etc. after filling it with water.
The Christmas cactus, botanical name “schlumbergera bridgesii’, has long, cascading branches that are smooth with scalloped edges. The plant branches are covered with lots of small flowers somewhat tubular in shape in a purple / red shade. Christmas cactus needs cool night temperatures and long hours of darkness to bloom in December. Use a good well-drained potting soil. Fertilize and keep in bright light.
The poinsettia, ‘Euphorbia pulcherrima’, is native to Mexico. The colorful bracts are not the true flower. It is the small yellow center. Although the milky sap is not poisonous, it may be irritating to pets, children, and those with sensitive skin. The plants need bright light. Keep them away from heat sources and drafts. Do not use outside in Winter. The plants must not dry out or be in standing water. Have good drainage. Look for plants with tight, firm yellow centers with a greenish tint. When using in arrangements they can be taken out of the pots and placed in sandwich bags with soil and roots intact (or larger plastic bags). If cutting bracts from plant trunk, sear the ends of stems with a flame. Each time you cut - sear end again.
Jerusalem-cherry, ‘Solanum pseudo-capsicum’, needs bright light and barely moist soil.
Norfolk Island Pine, ‘Araucaria excelsa’, give bright light and evenly moist soil. It is best kept pot-bound.

Mysterious Mistletoe• Scandanavians associated Mistletoe with Frigga, their goddess of love, and it may be from this that we derive the custom of kissing under the mistletoe. Those who kissed under the mistletoe had the promise of happiness and good luck in the fol-lowing year.
• The practice of kissing under the mistletoe was described in 1820 by American au-thor Washington Irving in his “The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon”: The mistletoe is still hung up in farm-houses and kitchens at Christmas, and the young men have the privilege of kissing the girls under it, plucking each time a berry from the bush. When the berries are all plucked the privilege ceases.
• Mistletoe was used by Druid priests 200 years before the birth of Christ in their winter celebrations. They revered the plant since it had no roots yet remained green during the cold months of winter.
• Mistletoe is intriguing botanically be-cause it is a partial parasite (a “hemi-parasite”). As a parasitic plant, it grows on the branches or trunk of a tree and sends out roots that penetrate into the tree and take up nutrients. But it also can grow on its own and produce food by photosynthesis.
• The mistletoe that is commonly used as a Christmas decoration (Phoraden-dron flavescens) is native to North America and grows as a parasite on trees in the West and also along a line down the East Coast from New Jersey to Florida.
• European mistletoe (Viscum album) figured prominently in Greek mythology, and is believed to be The Golden Bough of Aeneas, ancestor of the Romans.
• It is said that among Romans, enemies who met under mistletoe would lay down their weapons and embrace.
• Mistletoe is rarely found growing on oak trees, and as such was especially sacred to the ancient Celtic Druids. On the sixth night of the moon, white-robed Druid priests would cut the oak mistletoe with a golden sickle. Two white bulls would be sacrificed amid prayers that the recipients of the mistletoe would prosper.
• The sticky juice of mistletoe berries was used as adhesive to trap small animals or birds. In South Africa, it is called “Bird lime” in English.
• According to custom in the English-speaking world, the mistletoe must not touch the ground between its cutting and its removal as the last of Christmas greens at Candlemas; it may remain hanging through the year, often to preserve the house from lightning or fire, until it was replaced the following Christmas Eve.
• In the Middle Ages and later, branches of mistletoe were hung from ceilings to ward off evil spirits. In Europe they were placed over house and stable doors to pre-vent the entrance of witches.
• In some parts of England, the Christmas mistletoe is burned on the 12th night lest all the boys and girls who have kissed under it never marry.
