Iwas recently invited to a groundbreaking ceremony. We would not be there to celebrate the opening of a multi-million dollar factory, a new government building or a program to re-distribute

the taxpayer’s money. We were, in fact, there to give a “hand up” to a local family who needed a place to live – a place to call “our home”. The Newnan-Coweta Habitat for Humanity, with the help and sup-port of Newnan Presbyterian, Central Baptist and St Paul’s Episcopal churches, will make the dream of home ownership come true for this woman and her children. And it will happen as a result of a lot of volunteer labor, donated materials and the hearts and minds of a caring community.

Newnan-Coweta Habitat, founded in 1994, has constructed more than 70 homes in our community through tax-deductible donations of money and materials. Providing a partner-ship with the future homeowner, Habitat pro-vides a hand up, not a hand out, requiring the family to engage in the building process and repaying the costs with no interest. Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Hu-manity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.

I actually volunteered for a couple of days to help build such a home about 12 years ago. Even though I owned a home-building company, I couldn’t drive a nail straight. I could, however, council them on advertising, workers compensation requirements, operating costs, financing and customer relations – none of which raised even the smallest amount of interest for this group. So I carried lum-ber and concrete blocks, I swept sawdust and brought water to thirsty workers. But I left the real work and most of the thinking to workers who were much more skilled than I. A few of them had worked for me, but for those two days, I was taking orders from them!

Much of the funding for Habitat comes from the sale of donated items, which are sold by the Habitat’s Re-Store on Pine Road in Newnan. You’ll find great bargains on everything “including” the kitchen sink, as well as furniture, appliances, tools, cabinets, doors and windows, light fixtures and computer monitors and TV’s. They even had some church pews for sale last time I was there last week. Store hours are Wednesday through Saturday – 9 to 5. They accept and appreciate tax-deduct-ible donated items and will make an appointment to pick up larger pieces. You may even decide to become one of the store’s volunteers. They are a great group of folks.

As a Christian ministry, Habitat shares God’s love through their actions, working in partnership with God and His people to help develop Coweta County into a community where simple, decent houses are available to all. And now, as of this latest groundbreaking, one more family, a mother and her children, can finally say, “This is our Home”.

By LaTina EmersonCoweta’s Deal Finder Spring is here, and it’s the perfect time to buy plants and flowers to spruce up the yard and fresh produce for the kitchen table. Coweta County offers a variety of places to shop, from its annual plant sale, plant nurseries, farms and more.

u Annual Plant Sale Stock up on annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, herbs and vegetables at the Cowe-ta County Master Gardener Extension Volunteers’ Spring Plant Sale from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 11 at the Coweta County Fairgrounds. The sale will be held in the Agriculture Building at 275 Pine Road in Newnan. Customers can purchase plants that are suited for Georgia’s planting zones, including flowering plants, as well as to-matoes, peppers and herbs for the kitch-en table. All plants for sale were bred or grown by the Master Gardener Extension Volunteers. This is a popular sale, so customers should arrive early to get the best selec-tion. They should also bring their own boxes to carry their purchases. Mas-

ter Gardeners will be available to answer questions about planting. For more information about the sale, contact the UGA Extension Office in Coweta County at (770) 254-2620 or visit: http://ugaextension.com/coweta.

For the Vegetable CSA, Country Gar-dens Farm grows vegetables using organ-ic methods and environmentally sound farming practices to produce crops that are fresh, healthy and full of nutrients. Occasionally, the farm buys fruits and vegetables from other farms that use the same organic methods in order to provide

a good selection, according to the website. The farm offers three, 12-week sessions each year. The first section is closed, but two are remaining. Customers will come once a week to the farm to pick up their food items. Eight to 10 different fruits and vegetables will be on display, and custom-ers can select seven each week, plus an herb. Pick up is on Tuesdays or Thursdays. The cost is $25 per week, plus a one-time $35 membership fee for bags and packing supplies. Visit the farm’s website for more information about prices. Second Session (July to September): squash (yellow & zucchini), green beans, tomatoes, peppers (sweet and hot), egg-plant, potatoes, onions, cucumbers, okra, butterbeans, field peas, lettuce, tomatil-loes, Malabar spinach, apples, figs, musca-dines, blueberries, blackberries and herbs. Baby Dimensions is Newnan’s ultimate place to see your baby while you are pregnant. We have an upscale, spa-like boutique that can accommodate very large parties. It is also cozy enough that if you and your husband want your ultrasound to be just the two of you, you can do that too. Baby Dimensions is able to show your baby to you in 2D, 3D, 4D and the new HD Live! We purchased a new machine recently, and we are only one of a handful of places in the state of Georgia that has this new technology. It is absolutely mind blowing at how detailed you can see the baby’s features. Stacey, our registered sonographer, will make you feel like the baby is actually interacting with you during the session. There will also be a web cam video of the entire session. It will record every-thing that goes on during the session as well as what the baby is doing on the ultrasound screen. It makes a great keepsake to put in your Baby book. If you are expecting or have friends or family that are, a Gift Certificate makes the perfect gift. You can purchase one in any amount. We also host Baby Showers if you need the perfect spot to have one. There is nothing like having all of your friends and family be there to watch the show. Over the next few months, our Owner/Operator Stacey Livingston RDMS, will be answering some frequently asked questions that we have heard over the years. Not only is she registered, but she has been doing ultrasounds for 25 years. She has answered will continue to answwer many questions regarding baby ultrasounds. Feel free to text, call or e-mail us at [email protected] if you have questions about your ultrasounds during your pregnancy. Stay tuned for our first question next month: “Why do I have to drink so much water for my ultrasound?”** PLEASE NOTE – The answers that Stacey gives are strictly her opinion as a sonographer. They should not be taken in place of your physicians instructions. She is not a physician and has never claimed to be one.

Its that time of year again. The bees are buzzing, the pollen is falling at the 15th of April is looming near! Let me start of by declaring that I am in no way a tax consultant and my advice is to check with your tax professional to verify the following information.

Very often I advise my clients to hang onto their staging invoice in the event that the consultation and other cost could be tax deductible. However, that is not true for all situations.

This is the way that I understand it …

The fees for staging services can be considered advertising cost accord-ing to the IRS guidelines, as long as the home stager has been hired for the sole purpose of preparing your house to sell. The IRS position is that staging costs are legitimate selling expense for both primary and secondary homes and are tax deductible.

If the stager advises you to paint, replace carpet, make repairs … basic maintenance and upkeep, those ex-penses are not deductible. The cost of the stagers’ services in preparing the home to sell are deductible.

www.southern-staging.com • [email protected]

If an owner purchases accessories and items for staging that they are go-ing to take with them once the house sells, those items are not deductible, but if the items are rented or part of the stagers services and included on the stagers invoices, that will be tax deductible as staging expense.

Clear as mud, right? Basically, the best way to know is to check with your tax professional. Be sure to ask, because you definitely won’t be able to deduct staging expenses if you don’t ask, right?

BETH: Not only as we age – but at any age – there are certain legal documents which you should have in place should you become unable to speak for yourself.

There are 4 documents I recommend.

• A Power of Attorney which gives a designated agent the authority to make legal decisions on your behalf when you are no longer able to do so.

• A Power of Attorney for Healthcare (or Healthcare Proxy) – the same as the above but for healthcare.

• A Living Will or Advanced Directives – states your wishes for medical treatment.

• And a new document – P.O.L.S.T. – Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment.

If you do not have these documents I recommend you contact a lawyer, specifically an Elder Law Attorney, to help you get these in documents in order.

Just AskBethBeth Dowwith

QUESTION: “As I age, what legal documents do I need to have in place?”

GOOD EGGSOver 50 seniors hopped over to the Coweta County

Fairgrounds to enjoy an information expo, fun activi-ties and an Easter Egg “Hunt”.

Ten senior oriented vendors from across the county participated in the expo and activities. Local business volunteers also helped assist seniors with picking up eggs.

Martha Gill-Clark was the oldest attendee. At 90 she was giving the Easter Bunny some stiff competition. For being the oldest participant, Martha received a gi-ant chocolate bunny.

Brenda Creel was honored for picking up the most eggs. Unfortunately Brenda was so quick, we did not get a photo of her.

The senior hutch enjoyed a great day of activities.
