WELCOME BACK FORMER MEMBER

This issue seems to have turned into a book of lists! There were so many names that had to be indexed, so I hope you will be successful in finding your ancestors listed. The library has been rather busy since we have moved to Newnan. Some members are considering being volunteers. You may notice that the hours of operation have changed. We are now open on the all four Saturdays in the month. If there is a fifth Saturday in a month, we will be closed.

Page 3) “Eulogy on the Dead of Coweta”. We are requested by our friend, Jack SMITH, to say that “The Eulogy on the Dead of Coweta” which, by request, he had intended to deliver on the 4th of July, is unavoidably postponed to some later day. He has failed to get the information he desired. He earnestly requests each Captain in the county to send him as early as convenient, a full account in writing of the dead of his company, the battles in which they were engaged, and all facts of interest in regard to their respective commands. He requests all such officers to favor him in like manner. He would thankfully receive facts of service from any source whatsoever. The public will be duly notified of the day when the Eulogy will be delivered, and we trust that they will manifest the interest which the occasion demands. Will not the ladies aid in this service? Mexican Colonization. On Thursday last we had the pleasure of conversing with Mr. UPSHAW, of Macon County, Alabama, who visited Mexico in April and remained four or five weeks. He is of the opinion that the Mexican colonization scheme is a humbug. He visited Carlotta, and was surprised at its diminutive size. Four or five shanties are the sum total of its houses. Gov. HARRIS’ family will live in a tent. The house which the Gov. and Gen. PRICE planned to construct jointly is not yet complete. There are not more than four or five families in the Cordova colony. After arriving in Mexico, emigrants find it impossible to remain together, for their interests and necessities force them to seek houses in different localities. Mr. UPSHAW saw but few persons who left this country, who were not dissatisfied and wanted to return. Our informant gives it is his opinion that the Liberals have a larger force in the field than it is generally believed in this country, and that if Santa Anna returns to Mexico and lends his influence to the Liberal cause, Maxi million will be driven from Mexico. The instability of government – character of population – scarcity of laborers - temperature of the water (pure but warm), constitute insurmountable objections against settling in Mexico. All are advised emigrating before visiting the country. Apricots. Mr. J.E. ROBINSON of this city will please accept our thanks for the very palatable present of some of this fruit, which was grown on his premises this year. (End of Will Book B 1849-1892)

Did you know…. that there was once a town in Georgia called Coweta? The name was later changed to McCollum. From the

October 26, 1894 issue of The Herald & Advertiser newspaper, it states:

“Coweta is another newly settled town two miles north of Powelville, on the railroad which is to become a place

of no small importance itself. It is surrounded by a fertile section of farming lands and is adjacent to the

Coweta Fruit Farm. In the near future the fruit industry alone will make Coweta an important shipping point.

Mr. J.D. BREWSTER of Newnan is building a store-house and in a few days will open a store in the town.”

Members and friends of the Coweta County Genealogical Society are encouraged to participate in our Magazine. Submissions of

your records and research will convey to our nationwide readers your interest in preserving the history of Coweta County and the

surrounding areas.

The following are some suggestions and guidelines for submissions:

CHURCH RECORDS: Minutes, member lists, baptisms, marriages, cemetery records.

OLD OR CURRENT NEWSPAPER EXTRACTS: Obituaries, marriage write-ups, reunions and attendees. Newspaper articles need to

include the date and name of the Newspaper.

TOWN RECORDS: Tax records, public sales, licenses, court order and minute books, essay and stock market books, deeds and

mortgages, market ledgers.

WILL AND ESTATE RECORDS.

FAMILY RECORDS AND RESEARCH (GENEALOGIES): These should be documented with sources cited. These may include typed and

legible pedigree charts. Please remember that we cannot print and publish a lengthy genealogy and request that you limit your

pages to ten or less. The Editors of the Magazine will reserved the right to edit the material for presentation and timeliness of

publishing.

PHOTOGRAPHS: Retain the original photography; send only copies since return cannot be guaranteed. Identify as completely as

possible all persons, places, and dates. A family group should include names, dates, and/or other pertinent information.

ARTICLES which give readers information on source materials or libraries.

General guidelines for articles and submissions:

** All materials, including Pedigree charts must be typed, double-spaced, on one side of the paper, using the Arial font. It would be

preferable to email the original Word (or similar) document directly to the Editor ([email protected]) to avoid any transcription

errors.

You should give your SOURCES of your article, specific statements, direct quotations or extracts.

You, the contributor, are responsible for the accuracy of the information, opinions, omissions or factual errors. Names and

addresses of contributors will be printed with the published material.

The right to edit material for presentation is reserved by Coweta Courier’s editor. We know that you are interested in Coweta

County and your records may be the link another member has been searching.

Disclaimer: The articles contained within the pages of the Coweta Courier are reprinted, with permission, from volunteer sources

and are intended solely for the use and enjoyment of members of the Coweta County Genealogical Society and the Society is not

responsible for any inaccuracies or copyright infringements.
