MOOSE INTERNATIONAL MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN

Wow, what a fantastic International Convention in Tampa. The FBMA was there in force. We had 623 men in attendance. We also had 100% of our lodges represented. As far as anyone can remember this is the first time any Association had 100% of
the lodges represented at an International Convention in modern times. I want to thank each and everyone who worked to make sure this happened. Every member of our Association should be proud. I do not have the WOTM figures but I do know that the WOTM of Florida were there in force as well.
We also had a great showing in the Shining Star Awards. Florida took every award we had an entry in. Congratulations to Lodge Of The Year Venice, Chapter Of The Year Venice, Administrator Of The Year Bill Birk from Venice, Co-Worker Of The Year Dawn Mackland from Tallahassee and Novice Co-Worker Of The Year Arlene Owens from Merritt Island, you ROCK.
A big congratulation to Brenda Brady, who was appointed to the Star Recorder Board. Congratulations to Cheryl Runyon our new Deputy Grand Regent. Congratulations to Larry Cundiff and Carl Hoover our new Deputy Supreme Governors. Congratulations Robert Green, Paul Hedrick and Monty Montpetit on their appointments as Moose Legion Ambassadors, and to Guy Trone for being appointed for another year.
I was disappointed that the Proposed General Laws did not pass. I do thank you for your support however. I noticed that the majority of our members in attendance voted to approve them. We will be having a round table discussion of those proposed
changes at the Convention on Thursday afternoon. Rodney Hammond will be the moderator for this session. We would like your input as to why you think the changes did not pass and any suggestions you have that might make them more favorable to the membership as a whole.
The new Membership Campaign, Heard Of Moose?, was introduced and I am excited about this campaign. If we promote this campaign properly it should help our Fraternity grow to the numbers we were accustomed to in the early 1990’s. It is more than a Membership Campaign it is an awareness campaign.
We had a great 2011-2012 year in membership. We exceeded our new member goal and had a substantial gain in membership. We can celebrate that fact, but we must look ahead and ensure we do the same thing for 2012-2013. All of our Lodges, Chapters and Moose Legions must continually work on their arrears lists. We need to put as much, if not more, emphasis on keeping the members we have as we do signing new members.
I was disappointed that the FBMA was not even in the top 10 for Top Association, but I am still proud of what we did accomplish. We really need to work hard at the requirements to be the Top Association.
We are getting ready for our Annual Convention, which is in September this year, so mark your calendars and be there. We had 100% of our lodges at the International Convention, so you have set the bar. Lets have 100% at our Annual Convention in Orlando.
I look forward to seeing you all in Orlando.
Fraternally, Jerry Monk Regional Manager

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT
Well, International Convention is behind us and what a great convention it was. The FBMA absolutely shone, winning Shining Stars in every category we entered as well as awards in journalism and men’s and women’s Ritual Competition. We also had all of our lodges represented, a feat that apparently, no other association has accomplished. Thank you all for your efforts in letting the rest of the fraternity know that we are a proud, hard working association.
We achieved a gain in membership, both men and women but we must continue to enroll new members. Retention and recovery are the real keys to our future success so we must all work hard to make our lodges the best place in town to ensure that our members stay involved. Our social quarter’s operations must be run as a business, not a hobby and Fraternal Education is the only way to learn the correct procedures. We are now providing year round training which should enable all who need or desire training to receive it.
One thing I have noticed in the last few years is that very few lodges are requesting guest speakers for their important functions. We have many great and knowledgeable speakers here in Florida and I would love to see more lodges utilize them. Just send a written (email) request to our Regional Manager, Jerry Monk and he will be happy to assign a speaker to your special function.
I hope that we can achieve the same level of attendance at our up-coming Annual Convention in Orlando as we did at our Mid-Year Conference and at International Convention. Let’s all put forth the same effort as before and make it happen! Also, in
October, Moosehaven will c e l e b r a t e i t s 9 0 t h Anniversary. How great would it be to have at least all of our Districts, if not all of our lodges represented there? Again, with the same effort, we can do it!
Speaking of Moosehaven, our new Historical Committee Chairman, Charlie Titheridge has undertaken to totally remodel the FBMA archive/museum room at Moosehaven and he needs our help. He is in need of volunteers to help paint, upgrade the lighting system and complete other remodeling work. He also needs some materials such as window blinds and display cabinets as well as any interesting LOOM, WOTM, lodge or Association memorabilia that may be available. Monetary donations would also be most welcome. Charlie would like to have this work substantially completed in time for the Anniversary so let’s give him the help he needs to provide an archive/museum that we can all be proud of.
Lastly, we have ten new Pilgrims here in Florida and they will all be having their Presentations during the next few months. The schedule is on our website, so please try and attend at least one in your area to show your appreciation for them and to acknowledge the hard work and dedication needed to be elevated to the Pilgrim Degree of Merit.
Fraternally,David J. Smith,FBMA President

I am so proud of Florida and the great showing we made in Tampa! The Florida Women of the Moose and the Florida Loyal Order of Moose know how to host an International Convention. Now, the entire country knows that FLORIDA ROCKS!
Congratulations to our incoming Deputy Grand Regent, Cherry Runyon. I am certain she will do an outstanding job! Cherry, please know that all of the Florida co-workers are awesome and we will help you in any way we can.
Big “Kudos” to all of the Florida chapters for working on our new members and for working on membership retention….WE ARE NUMBER ONE!!!!!!!
Florida also proved how awesome we are by winning several Shining Star Awards. Congratulations to the following: Lodge Administrator of the Year – Bill Birk – Venice Lodge 1308; Chapter of the Year – Venice Chapter 758 (Woo Hoo); Lodge of the Year – Venice Lodge 1308; Novice Co-Worker of the Year – Arlene Owens, Merritt Island Chapter 1544 and Co-Worker of the Year – Dawn Mackland, Tallahassee Chapter 1103.
Let’s keep up the good work and continue to SHINE in this great fraternity.
More congratulations are in order for our very own Brenda Brady, a member of Stuart Chapter 1651, who is now a member of the International Star Recorder Board! You go girl!
Congrats to Debra Smith for taking First Place for General Excellence State/Provincial Association Publication.
Do you see why we should all be so proud to be a Florida Moose? We ROCK!
Congrats to all that won awards and I apologize if I forgot to mention anyone.
I am looking forward to a great convention in September and hope to see you all in Orlando.

BRADENTON BEACH, Florida - Crowds have discovered a bright and airy island beach bar with a great view of the Gulf and fine dining. But you have to a member or guest to enjoy its amenities.
No longer the dingy, smoke-filled hangout for barstool-sitting retirees, the Anna Maria Island Moose Lodge has been attracting new members at record-breaking rates.
In the last year, the 6,000-member island Moose was No. 1 -- both in the state and nationally -- in number of membership applications, with an increase of 1,114, says Ernie Casali, the Lodge Administrator. And it's on track for another record year with 83 new members, almost double the state average.
"We are getting more people into the lodge because we've increased the number of events and activities, and improved our food," Casali said.
Since he hired Zack Machleit as the cook, Casali said more folks are having lunch and dinner, and those members are bringing in guests who, in turn, join.
They also have made a lot of renovations to one of the older buildings on the island, including new paint in the bar area and dining room, and taking the covers off the windows so diners can have a panoramic view of the Gulf of Mexico and beach.
"When I came, there were boards covering all the windows and it was all dark and smoky in here," Casali said.
And more major renovations are planned, including moving the bar to a different part of the building to increase the dining area.
This increased popularity has helped the island lodge fulfill its main goal of helping the community. The lodge has donated more than $100,000 in the past year in money and gifts
to many charities throughout Manatee County, as well as to the national Mooseheart and Moosehaven Charities, Casali said.
The lodge has even started using social media to help find younger members. "We send out e-mails with our lunch and dinner specials," Casali said, "and with reminders of our event activities." They also have an Internet presence with a web site: www.moose2188.org
A no-smoking policy also has helped in attracting more members, notes Ron Luckerman, Governor of the lodge. "This is a great place to socialize with your friends," Luckerman said. He joined the island Moose in 1983 at the insistence of a friend, but let his membership lapse. Then in 2006 he rejoined when he saw the changes starting to take place and became active in the fraternal organization.
For Sandra Zenzel, who retired and moved to Florida after teaching 33 years in Pennsylvania, friends also convinced her four years ago to join the Women of the Moose, a separate organization under Moose International. She became active in the leadership from the start, becoming Chaplain the first year and now Recorder of the Chapter. Her husband had died and the friends thought she needed to get out more. "It's like family here," Zenzel said, "and it's a safe place where I can be by myself." The local Women of the Moose Chapter saw membership jump by almost 800 last year.
Even though the island Moose has the Gulf, good food and fun activities, Darryl Mellema, spokesman for Moose International, said active officers and members such as Zenzel, Luckerman and Casali have made the lodge No. 1 in membership. "Anna Maria Island is blessed with a great view," Mellema said. "It's equally blessed with great people.

On May 26, 2012 The Treasure Coast Council Of Higher Degrees for Districts 5,6 and 7 presented Sheriff Ken Mascara of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office with Tommy Moose for the children of St. Lucie County who are comforted by Tommy Moose when they are in a traumatic situation. COUNCIL PRESENTS TOMMY MOOSE TO ST. LUCIE COUNTY SHERIFF
LEISURE CITY, Florida - Because everyone is always looking for something new to do, PK Stevenson, President of the Gold Coast Council of Higher Degrees (pictured below in his ‘turkey hat’), came up with a new idea.
After a couple of months of planning, fantastic support from both Lodges and Chapters in Districts 2, 3 and 4 and some not so bad weather, they were off.
After a short business meeting, where next year's Officers were nominated, the fun began. Decoy turkeys were used and participants tossed rings around their necks, kept score, and basically just had a good time. The object was to get one ring around each of the three turkeys necks in one round. The "instant winners" were given a choice of a turkey or ham.
There were trophies for the top three high scores. 1st place -
Claudia Carpenter f ro m Po mp ano Chapter, 2nd place - (and instant winner) Debbie Varie-Bright from West Boca Chapter (pictured at right with PK Stevenson) and 3rd place - ‘Perky’ Perkins from Pembroke Pines Lodge. There were also medals and little duckies dressed as turkeys for all participants.
Food for the event was hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage with peppers and onions, potato salad, pasta salad and baked beans.
The council's next event will be a Roaring 20'S Dance to be hosted by Lauderdale Lakes Lodge in the fall. Article and photographs submitted by Lorraine Stevenson

It was only about 9 months ago I got word that the Mooseheart Color Guard were scheduled to come to the International Convention in Tampa this year and needed sponsorship of $7500 to cover the costs of getting them here. We had to jump on this quickly and our Moose Rider state board scrambled to hold an online meeting to approve pledging our sponsorship. Within hours Director General Airey was sending out an email thanking everyone who had already pledged some funds, telling them that Florida Moose Riders had pledged the entire amount and would be the sole supporters for this effort. In light of the fact that this year's convention was in Florida and would kick off a year-long celebration for Mooseheart’s 100 year anniversary in 2013, it was indeed a major honor for us to be part of this.
We brought this to our riders at the general session of the general meeting which was held at our Fall Rally in Leisure City, FL, and agreed to combine our efforts for the laptop fund and the color guard sponsorship and were extremely successful in meeting and exceeding our goals for both. In fact, as word got out, we had people from other states wanting to be a part of it and even WOTM chapters willing to make donations for the cause.
Jay Long, FMBA Moose Riders Vice Chairman, worked with Mooseheart superintendent of schools, Gary Urwiler, to make arrangements to begin a motorcycle “escort” at Moosehaven, which was the first stop for the Mooseheart van and bus in Florida. Johnny Hester, Chairman of Mandarin 42 Moose Riders, took charge of the Moosehaven to Ocala escort. More than a dozen riders took the time to take part in the first leg of the escort,
which left Thursday afternoon from the Moosehaven Campus. The entourage wound its way through the Florida back roads over to Ocala for the next stop. The Ocala Lodge had scheduled an open house for the group and a dress rehearsal was planned for that evening. The Ocala Lodge was packed with dignitaries not only from FBMA, but also from the local communities and Lodges. The dress rehearsal was moving and the performance of the drum line incredibly uplifting and set a great tone for the rest of the weekend.
The following morning the boys went to Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing had a tour and met Don Garlits, himself. Following that it was “kick stands up” for the entourage, with several more Moose Riders showing up from Lake Wales to join in. The caravan made its way down I-75, then to I-275 and into downtown Tampa just in time for the boys to check in and have a rehearsal. At the opening session, the crowd was impressed with the performance of these young men, and Scott Hart, Executive Director of Moosheart, made a point to acknowledge the Florida Moose Riders for their sponsorship, the escort and the warm welcome extended to the Color Guard, their instructor Gunnery Sergeant Ruben “Gunny” Hinton, the Drum Line and Gary Urwiler, Superintendent of Education, and his family who also made the trip. In an email from Scott Hart, he wrote, “We can’t say enough how much we appreciate the Florida/Bermuda Moose Riders for making it possible for the boys to travel down to Convention. They were treated like superstars the entire trip and will remember this time for the rest of their lives – thank you for blessing them! They especially enjoyed the escort ride that they received from Moosehaven to Ocala and then on to Tampa.”

Our Youth Awareness program is showing some very positive gains in lodge participation, number of candidates and the number of 4 - 9 year olds that are being involved. We more than doubled our participation over last year.
Our candidates talked to 781 -four to nine year olds, hoping to give these kids a better idea on how to handle their future challenges. The students presenting the Kid's Talks all had a feeling of satisfaction in the way their presentations were received.
South Florida was fortunate to be able to choose two students from the 17 students completing their
required 3 Kid's Talks. Alison McMenamy sponsored by Ft. Myers Lodge 1899 and Alexandra Loccisano from Venice Lodge 1308 attended the Youth Awareness Congress in White Plains, NY. Both girls were excited to be able to have this experience and extends thanks to the FBMA and their respective lodges for supporting this wonderful program.
Alexandra Loccisano brought back the 5th place title to Florida, winning the $2000 scholarship from Moose International.
New plans are already forming for the 2012-13 Youth Awareness Program here in South Florida. Ken Onstott, South Florida Youth Awareness Coordinator
