Note from the Editor: What a crazy 2 months. The hurricanes in Texas and Florida didn’t cause enough damage to lodges and personal property in Texas and Florida, now the fires in California are wreaking havoc with lodges, busi-nesses and homes out there. We in Florida still man-aged to have a good Annual Convention in Orlando and we had a great turnout for the Statewide Pilgrim Presentation on Friday night. Only 6 out of a class of 12 were able to attend. Don Ross, Pilgrim Governor and O.V., was also the keynote speaker for the event.

The same convention also brought in new leadership for the men and the women with the conferrals of W. Scott Duncan as FBMA President and Tudy Cundiff as Deputy Grand Regent for the WOTM. I know we will all continue to work as hard for them as we have for their predecessors to make our Fraternity strong.

As you probably know by now, Moosehaven suffered the loss of their wonderful pier from the wrath of Hur-ricane Irma. The WOTM have been charged with rais-ing funds to make the needed repairs, but anyone can donate. There wasn’t a lot of other damage and all of the residents were safe and sound throughout the storm. Unfortunately, many of our members were not so lucky after Irma and Harvey. Information about how you can help in Florida and Texas is avail-able on the Moose International website.

November is the Chili Cookoff at Moosehaven and you are all encouraged to attend. It’s a great event, with all the chili you can taste for a small donation and then you get to pick your favorite. As always, there will be vendors of all kinds and entertainment, too. While you are there, stop by the FBMA Archives (it’s next to the Centennial Project building), and take a look at our amazing Moose history.

The holidays will be here soon, so let me take this opportunity to thank you all for your wonderful news articles and kind words. I wish you all happy holidays and peace and prosperity for the coming new year. —Joan Fedora, Editor

can to get them back on the rolls as dues-paying members. Remember, we all took an oath to strengthen our order; this not only means sponsor-ing new members but helping keep the ones we have. We all have that re-sponsibility. As you know many of our lodges had significant damage from Irma. The Associa-tion has a fund to help lodges affected. We can’t cover all costs of repair but we will do what we can. Lodges that had damage must send written estimates for repairs, in-surance coverage with deductible amount to Association Secretary Scott Cushing. The requests will then be re-viewed by the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee will then determine how much we can do for each lodge based on the amount in the relief account. If anyone Lodge, Chapter, Moose Legion or member wish-es to donate to this fund, please make your check paya-ble to the FBMA earmarked for disaster relief and mail to Association Secretary Scott Cushing. I pray that we are not hit with anymore disasters for years to come. Thanks for all you do and God Bless Moose-heart and Moosehaven. Jerry Monk FBMA Liaison

MOOSE- HONORING COMMUNITY HEROES It is hard to believe that we are already headed into the winter months. Let me wish all a Happy Thanks-giving, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy New Year. Please be safe during this time and, if you have a bit too much libation, call a cab, uber or a friend.

I also want to let those who were affected by Hurricane Irma know that our thoughts and prayers are with each of you. I want to give a special thanks to Larry Cundiff for cov-ering for me while I was recuperating after my surgery. Larry did a great job filling in as the Liaison for me. Okay, now that that is all out of the way, I want to thank all who made it to the convention in September despite the storm. We had a smaller turnout, but we did accom-plish what is required by our laws and did have a good time while doing it. Our Official Visitors were great and brought us some very good information. As we move forward through the year, we must do all we can to ensure that each of our units has a gain in active members on April 30, 2018. We must be proactive in contacting members who are about to expire and encour-age them to pay their dues. We must also be contacting those members who have already expired and do all we

Hello everyone. First, I want to congratulate all who have received call cards for Stars, College, and Academy of Friendship. Also, I would like to mention that all of our Stand-Alone Chapters this year earned the Award of Achievement. Awesome. A big thank you to all that made it to convention in Sep-tember. I know for some it was a hardship with all going on in the State. We did have several Junior Graduate Re-gents that had a call card for Green Cap and could not make it. There will be consideration for a make up con-ferral, so contact Babs Moffitt for details. Remember that November is membership retention month. This is not the job of one person, it is a group job. Have a get-together, use the tools that Moose Inter-national provides, and make phone calls. But remember when we get them back, use them, give them a job. Make everyone part of the Chapter, even if they do not come to

meetings. One of the big-gest complaints I hear is, “I ask if I can help and they say ‘they have it covered.’” Give them your job some-times, and you look around and do something else. We all want to be a part of this wonderful organization. Remember to be nice and play well in the sandbox, have a wonderful holiday and I plan on seeing you in April.

Tudy Cundiff Deputy Grand Regent

First, I must recognize the Florida Sheriff’s Youth Ranches who just Celebrat-ed 60 Years of Service to our Florida kids. I attended a banquet at the Boys Ranch in Live Oak. What a great organization we have part-nered with. I remarked at dinner how much this place resembles Mooseheart. If you have never seen one of their facilities, making a day trip is well worth the effort, Thanks Frank Kenny for inviting Christine and me. Second, I want to shout out to the Panama City Moose Lodge and Chapter. As Hurricane Nate was heading to-wards the Panhandle, they were hosting a District Meeting and Moose Legion Celebration, which we were able to attend. They have shown a growth in Active Membership over 25% since May 1. I learned they are promoting being a Moose Lodge, fraternal fundraiser for Mooseheart and Moosehaven and they are getting very active with events and community service. They have revived the kids room and have a special bounce in the activities they are provid-ing for their members. They are living it… Harmonize, Diversify, and Multiply. Keep up the good work, your suc-cess will continue, and you will shine as an example to others.

Fraternally Yours, W. Scott Duncan, 2017-18 FBMA President

Fall 2017: I am so proud to be a part of the greatest As-sociation in all of the Loyal Order of Moose. Our broth-ers and sisters came together to help each other and our communities survive Hurricane Irma. Some are still in recovery mode as we speak. Amazing stories coming to me as lodges opened their doors for members and some for even the public, to shelter from the storm. A few years ago, the Florida Bermuda Moose Association start-ed an Emergency Relief Fund. Each year we asked for donations to the fund. Well this year we are dispersing money to assist lodges with insurance deductibles and rebuilding projects; this will allow lodges to recover fast-er than they would be able to without help. Donations have been coming in from all over our great fraternity, including lodges, Chapters, and Moose Legions here in Florida. I am ever so grateful for their generosity. As we look forward to our Holiday months, I must thank one of my mentors, and a great leader of our As-sociation, Fred Van Nostrand. Serving as an appointed officer for six years, then on the FBMA Executive Board for an additional five years. Thank you for your leadership and counsel these many years. November ushers in the Retention Week Activities, I look forward to hearing the success stories in the com-ing months as each lodge celebrates its Valued Veterans. Retention truly does start on day one. When we accept an application we offer a promise to our new member. Every day we should be working to fulfill that promise. Harmonize with our Women of the Moose partners, Diversify our activities to include everyone, and Multi-ply… grow our membership. I will leave you with some shout outs…

From the Desk of the Regional Manager

St. Augustine in our RV on 9/8, traffic was bad on that Friday, and it took us 6 hours to get to Talla-hassee. We started calling RV parks, there was nothing available. We called other places, nothing; they wouldn't even offer the parking lot. I looked to see if I had my Moose card with me and thought what the heck we'll give it a shot. We were told all the sites were taken but come in and we'll find you a spot if you don't mind not having a hookup. We were so relieved! We could park wherever we wanted, didn't even have to unhook if we didn't want to. That night there was a steak dinner (delicious) and a wonderful band, we partied the night away. The next morning they provided free breakfast to all the evacuees! How sweet is that? That's not the end; they did it again the next morn-ing! They offered us shelter, food, ice - all the ne-cessities we could ask for. We decided to head back to St. Augustine Sunday as the storm was constantly changing direction so we missed the home made pizzas. This lodge truly lives up to the Moose expectations, one to be commended. We can't thank them enough.” Sincerely, Mary Beth Kelly (WOTM Worthington, OH Chap-ter) Jack Blankenship & Roger & Anne White

Sincerely, Sam Harris, Regional Manager

I wanted to share an email I received with you all so I decided to make it my article for the newslet-ter. I hope you don’t mind as it is not often we get good comments, but it shows the dedication and support one lodge and chapter showed to fellow Moose Brothers and Sis-ters during the recent hur-ricane in Florida. I know

there were several in the State that sheltered their mem-bers, fed them and stood by them when they needed it. I also know many lodges from across our great nation sent supplies to both Texas and Florida.

This is what it’s all about folks! Taking care of our own Mooseheart and Moosehaven; Taking care of the com-munities we live in; and, Taking care of each other!

It just does not get any better than what this lodge and chapter did for these members who had nowhere to turn. They are to be commended for the support they gave out without any thoughts for themselves, for spot-lighting what the Moose does and does better than any other Fraternal Organization, and for making at least 4 members more dedicated to the charitable projects we work to raise money for.

A simple thank you does not seem enough, but I can as-sure you that each member that hears about this (and we all know how fast things travel in the Moose), will look up to you, and perhaps mimic your actions the next time someone needs to step up. Just like the old campfire song states, “It only takes a spark to get a fire going, and soon all those around are warmed up by its glowing”. We need more sparks, but until we get them, you can do it. I know you can. One person CAN make a lodge or chap-ter successful.

This lodge and chapter are truly Shining Stars in Florida and our Fraternity. Our hats are off to Tallahassee Moose Lodge #1075 and Tallahassee Chapter #1103. My sincere heartfelt thanks go out to you, and your membership for “doing something good for some-one each day”.

Below is the email I received:

Moosehaven

Shortly after Hurricane Irma ripped through Florida, Grand Chancellor Barbara McPherson issued the follow-ing to all WOTM Chapters: “WOTM HURRICANE REPAIR FUND Earlier this week Hurricane Irma ripped through the State of Florida leaving flooding and devastation across the en-tire state and decided to take on our beloved Moosehaven. As referenced in a letter from Executive Director John Capes distributed by Official Communication yesterday, Irma left a mess on campus and the most disheartening damage is to the pier, which is completely destroyed. The storm surge was devastating and at one point even crest-ed our seawall. Despite everything, our residents were safe, comfortable and well-cared for thanks to the amazing staff at Moosehaven. In keeping with our Women of the Moose values and love of our pier, the Women of the Moose will be providing necessary relief via the Hurricane Repair Fund by way of the Green Cap/Ways and Means Committee. . . . . .The Hurricane Repair Fund will help restore the fishing pier to its glory, will assist in repairing damage to the deck at the Michigan Building, will help replace shingles on wind-damaged roofs and will reduce the financial burden of the clean-up effort of downed trees, limbs and moss. While insurance helps with some of the restoration, contribution from the Women of the Moose will help offset high deducti-bles and restore our campus for the enjoyment of our resi-dents for years to come. We have a long tradition in pre-serving, repairing and rebuilding the Moosehaven Fishing Pier and I am confident your efforts will not disappoint. Our love for our beloved campuses is stronger than any hurri-cane and I know we can count on you, co-workers, to get the job done. While this fund is intended to be a Commit-tee project, any additional Chapter or individual dona-tions may be remitted to Moose Charities earmarked “WOTM Hurricane Repair Fund.” Thank you in advance for your contributions in ensuring that Moosehaven is once again “Another Day in Paradise”. “

Please consider making a donation to this fund. Your thoughtfulness and generosity will be greatly appreciated. As you can see from the photos, the damage to the be-loved pier was massive and it will take a considerable sum of money to replace it. Meanwhile, thank you to the WOTM for taking on this project. Mooseheart

T here was just too much “Mooseheart” on Saturday for visiting River Valley to handle. The host Ram-blers were too fast, too defensively aggressive, had

too many good runners and have built too much momen-tum over in the middle third of the season for the visiting Falcons. Playing on its 2017 homecoming contest, Mooseheart opened a 37-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and cruised to a 58-0 victory. The win runs the Ramblers’ win streak to four games, leaves the team 4-2 and keeps them on-course for a return to the postseason for the first time since 2013. “Our guys showed up ready to go to get our fourth win,” Mooseheart coach Jacob Pekofske said. “When you get guys who buy into what you’re trying to do, it can build up within the team, and winning always helps that.” While River Valley (1-5) struggled to get its offense roll-ing in the fourth quarter, every time the Ramblers touched the ball, they scored. In the first quarter alone: Nelson Doe scored on a 63-yard run; Nick Rempert caught a 55-yard pass from Joel

Williams; Doe ran in from 14 yards; Doe ran in again from 14 yards; the Ramblers tackled a Falcons runner in the end zone for a safety and Oliver Wah scored from 41 yards. “We just try to find open space and get down field as quickly as we can,” Wah said. Homecoming at Mooseheart is a special occasion, with Moose from many states coming to the campus that their Fraternity memberships and financial donations make possible. Those Moose members join with returning alumni to create an atmosphere unique in Illinois high school football. “It feels great to have all the Moose members from all the different places they traveled from who came to watch us. They came to see what Mooseheart Red Ramblers foot-ball is all about. We’re about hitting hard and scoring touchdowns, so I’m glad we did that in front of the them today,” Wah said. # 58 Moose Legion Celebration on 9/21/17. Presenting Jim with his pin was Past Deputy Supreme Governor and Past FBMA President Ed Fishier (far right) and Territory #23 Man-ager Bill Birk (left). The Moose Legion Celebration was held at Pine Island Lodge #1954. Past Deputy Supreme Governor Honored at Celebration Despite Hurricane Irma

I have just returned from our Pilgrim Weekend Getaway as I write this article. We had 80 people attend the week-end affair. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. On Saturday night we went to the Sleuth's Theater show. The food was great and the show as fantastic. Everyone seemed to enjoy it.

People were starting to arrive on Friday, and with them many brought items for our Chinese auction. Many brought books for our book exchange. There were lots left when the weekend was over. A lot of people took some back to their lodges and Al Caime took the last of them for Moosehaven.

Speaking of Al Caime. He is our new Pilgrim chairman. He replaces Carl Hoover, who resigned. Carl did a great job and he will be missed.

At our meeting Saturday afternoon Al asked the mem-bers of the Pilgrim class of 2017 to introduce themselves as well as their wives or significant others. He also asked the class of 2016 to do the same because our 2016 week-end getaway was cancelled due to hurricane Matthew. I

am glad we didn't have to cancel because of a hurricane this year. We had a little bit of rain, but otherwise the weather was great.

I read the list of Pilgrims that had passed away since our weekend two years ago in 2015 up to the present. After the meeting, we held our fifty/fifty raffle, the cooler of full of cheer and our Chinese auction.

If you want to have a great time, join us the second weekend of October next year. Please get your reservations in early.

FBMA Website Features Cool Lodge Locator/Directions Tool

N ext time you take a road trip in Florida and wonder if there will be any Lodges on the way or nearby, check out the Lodge Loca-tor drop down menu on the FBMA web-site at https://www.floridamoose.com.

Our webmaster, Dan Pratt, has built in 2 func-tions; one a lodge locator map showing lodge loca-tions. If you click on the “balloon”, the lodge name will come up along with a link to a webpage if available. It’s cellphone user-friendly, too!

The second function provides directions between lodges. Just pick the lodge you are at and select the one you want to go to and, voila, up pops the directions, miles, and a map. Pretty cool, eh?

Lodge and Chapter News Mooseheart Scholarship Fund Grows Thanks to Chapter

On August 26th, 2017, the Palm Harbor Moose Lodge 433 opened its doors for an open house to support the WOTM, Chapter 30 conducting a fund raiser for Mooseheart scholarships. Over 40 baskets/packages were raffled off. The event, chaired by Tammy Erisman, was a HUGE success including applications for seven new members.

This charitable cause was supported by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Tampa Bay Rays, the zoo, aquarium, and countless local businesses.

It was a heartfelt evening to see so many people opening up their hearts and wallets!

FLORIDA SHERIFFS YOUTH RANCHES

W hen Cayleigh came to the Boys Ranch six months ago with her younger brothers she knew two things; she would get to stay with her siblings and their lives were about to

change for the better. Change is an important concept for this well-spoken and polite high school junior. Cayleigh and her brothers came from a tough home life. The three had spent time in an-other group home that split Cayleigh away from her youngest brother. Though their situation was traumatic, Cayleigh said that when she found out they were coming to the Youth Ranches she felt a sense of comfort about it. “I knew that my brothers and I were going to get to stay together, our family wasn’t going to be torn apart.” Cayleigh might be a little outnumbered by the boys at the Ranch, but she says she is used to it growing up with her brothers. “They don’t really treat me any differently.” Cayleigh said, in fact she was recently elected to be a member of the Rancher Council. “It is a huge honor.” Cayleigh explained. “You are chosen by your peers to serve on the council. It meant a lot to me know that my fellow Ranchers trusted me with that responsibility.” Cayleigh is humbled by the honor and simply wants to do a good job to help make a difference at the Boys Ranch. She, holds a special distinction as the very first girl to ev-er be elected onto the council. “We are the voice of our fellow Ranchers.” Cayleigh add-

ed. “If they see something that needs to change or if they have a problem they come to us. It is a big change just having a girl on the council and I take that responsibility seriously.” Cayleigh said she understands that she is rep-resenting not just her peers but all the girls at the Ranch and all the girls who will come after her. She is happy to be helping balance out the council. Her fearless and determined spirit has also landed her two jobs on campus. Cayleigh earned her lifeguard certifi-cation this past spring and works at the pool and on field trips to the local springs monitoring the safety of the swimmers. When she isn’t out by water she is working at the Boys Ranch Administration Building. Cayleigh’s per-sonality and drive was an immediate hit with the staff at the Boys Ranch. She has fit right in is an immense help with clerical duties in the office. Though her tasks may seem like small busywork to some, for Cayleigh each day is an opportunity she intends to take. Cayleigh attends school in town and hopes be able to take dual enrollment classes at the local college. The bright young woman has her heart set on getting a great educa-tion and perhaps tackling social work or a career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the future. One thing is for sure, Cayleigh is grateful for the positive changes in her life that the Youth Ranches and the gener-osity of our donors have provided. For her at the end of the day, “It’s so much better to be here!” Submitted by Josh Blackmon, FSYR

residential programs of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches to help provide a warm and welcoming home environment for the children or the items can be sold at one of the thrift store locations to provide much needed operational revenue to the Youth Ranches. Items such as clothing, appliances, jewelry, antiques, furniture, cars, trucks, and even boats are accepted donations!

What is the best part? Sheriffs Ranches Enterprises will pick up items anywhere in the state of Florida! You have two options for donating to the SRE: drop them off at one the their thrift store locations in Live Oak, Homo-sassa, Dunedin, Leesburg, New Port Richey, and Ocala. Or call to schedule a pick up at your home and members of their dependable and dedicated staff will pick up your donation at absolutely no cost to you.

Sheriffs Ranches Enterprises, Inc. is an affiliate of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches. The mission of SRE is to provide financial support, goodwill and community involvement for the boys and girls served by the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches. Donated goods are sold to the public at our six Thrift Store locations and unique and collectible items are sold on eBay. Donated vehicles, trucks, vans and vessels are sold through the Vehicle Sales Lot located at the Thrift Store in Live Oak. For addition-al information or to schedule your donation, please visit www.sre4kids.org or call 800-338-0377.
