Wow, where has the time gone? I can’t believe we are starting 2013 already. I hope all had a great and safe Holiday Season.

I am sure by now that everyone is aware of the $0 Application fee that we have again this year. It started on December 17th, 2012 and will run until April 30, 2013.

I am sure this will help us attain our new member production goal and should ensure we have an increase in membership on April 30, 2013.

The FBMA also has a new Short Term Membership Campaign that runs from January 1, 2013 to April 30, 2013. See the detailed information in the flyer in this edition and also on the FBMA web site. In addition to the individual membership campaign we also have a retention incentive for the lodges. Each lodge that has an increase in active members will be in a random drawing for $1000.00. Five (5) lodges will be drawn after we have the final figures of the 2012-2013 year and each will receive a check from the FBMA in the amount of $1000.00. I don’t know of any lodge that would not want this award so make certain your lodge is in the running.

I am looking forward to Supreme Governor Jim Henderson’s visit to Florida in March. He will be at Venice 1308 on March 6, 2013, Sanford 1851 on March 7, Crescent City 1641 on March 8 and Jacksonville Beach 1558 on March 9. Mark your calendar and get out to one or all of these visits. It is truly an honor for these lodges to host a Supreme Governor Visit. I am sure we will be stopping at other lodges in between these official visits so don’t be surprised if we just pop in on your lodge. After the visit to Jacksonville Beach he will be at Moosehaven on March 10 for the dedication of the Katherine Smith Center for Special Needs. Monday March 11 he will be playing golf in the Moosehaven Golf Tournament. If

you’re a golfer here is a great opportunity for you to have some fun and support Moosehaven. More information will be available at a later date on the tournament.

I hope all of you have made your reservation for the Mid Year Conference in Orlando. We have two great Official Visitors again this time around. Past Supreme Governor Ron Sweetman who serves as the Chairman of the Moosehaven Board Of Directors will be the LOOM visitor and Grand Chancellor Barb McPherson will be the WOTM visitor. I know they will both bring a great deal of knowledge and information to us.

Now is also the time to be making your plans for the International Convention to be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin May 24th to the 29th, 2013. I have not been to Milwaukee in many years but I do know this is a great city to visit. I sure hope we can get 100% participation in Milwaukee like we did in Tampa. I know it is a bit further away, but it is a trip that can be made by car, so if you have to car pool and get there.

As you know the Association took on the funding of a Computer Lab at Mooseheart as part of the renovation of the school. This project is $100,000.00. We are still working on the bus for Moosehaven and that too is a $100,000.00 project. We need your support for these projects as we do all other projects we take on.

Our Cradle Fund did not do too well. Pennsylvania beat us by over $30,000.00. We have an opportunity coming up in February to support the Endowment Fund once again with a special fundraiser. The Rocker Fund will generate donations in honor of Moosehaven. Lets make sure we support this and do a better job than we did in October. I know we can do it because “WE ARE A CUT ABOVE THE REST.”

Thanks for all you do, see you soon.

FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

I hope all of you had a wonderful “Holiday Season”. I want to personally thank all the Lodges who contributed to those affected by Hurricane “Sandy”. It shows that the Moose members in Florida care about those who were touched by this storm.

I want to thank Jim Nadeau and J.T. Tarpein and all those involved in the collection of donations and the delivery of those donations to the New Jersey and New York Associations. Also the “Tommy Moose” that were delivered to the children who were affected by the storm.

We are still behind in applications for the year. Moose International waived the application fee starting December 17, 2012. Let’s continue to make a concerted effort in finding new members who can add to and enjoy the fraternity that we are all proud to be a part of.

I challenge each and every good standing member in

our Association to solicit and sign eligible applicants as well as retaining those members we have on the roles.

Please continue to support the "Heard of Moose" Campaign and our Association’s “Miles ofSmiles” campaign.

I thank all of you for your continued support of our Lodges, our Association, and our wonderful Fraternity. I am here to serve you the Moose members and the Lodges within our Association. Help me make this the best year ever! Let’s make it happen! Together, we can do it!

Fraternally, Lynn A. Klein, FBMA President

FROM THE DESK OF THE ASSOCIATION SECRETARY

Brothers and Co-Workers, the first thing I wish to do is to is say I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and wish you a Happy New Year. The District Presidents who took office this past September are working hard and we want to thank all the members who attend the District Meetings, without

your support many of the programs of the FBMA could not be accomplished. Remember we have accepted too large projects, one is the Computer Science Classroom for $100,000 and to purchase a 28 passenger bus for Mooseheart for $100,000. We need a lot of participation by the Lodges, Chapters, Moose Legions and Council of Higher Degrees to

meet those commitments. Checks for those projects can be made out to Moose Charities and sent directly to Moose Charities or to the FBMA. I would like to request that any Lodge donating at the District Meetings to Safe Surfin' or Special Olympics make the checks out to Moose Charities and send them directly to Moose Charities. I have included in the Courier the Men's Registration form and Meal Registration form for the Mid-Year Conference that will be held April 4-7, 2013, a little bit early this year. The ads for program book again will be $100 for a full page and $50 for a half page and I need those sent to me by March 18, 2013. Again Happy Holidays and thanks so much for all you do for the FBMA and the Moose Fraternity.

Scott A. CushingFBMA Secretary

Great Florida Co-Workers,

We are now in the time of year where we are counting our Blessings, our children, our families, and our Moose Homes. Reach out and be a friend and co-worker to someone new. Give them the opportunity to feel and see what we do in the Moose.

This is a great time with the Awards of Achievements hanging on the Chapter walls and the plans for a Green Cap celebration honoring our new Green Cap recipients. Invite new friends in to see what the Women of the Moose is about and how much pride we have in our degrees.

Start making plans for our up and coming Mid-Year Conference in Orlando in the month of April. Find a co-worker to share your room and double your fun

and learning experience. Remember something good will happen and you might hear just what you have been waiting to hear.

Keep in mind that our elections will be coming up before you know it. Start planning for our next year’s officers and chairmen. Use some thought so we can elect a good leader and have others learning to be good leaders. Remember, Chapters are not one person but a combination of many talents, interests, ideas, and people. Our nomination committees are a very important part of our election process.

Co-Workers, keep up the good work. Our membership numbers are up but we have a ways to go. Remember if we take care of our members and membership we will be able to take care of our Seniors and our Kids. Do it for the kids! The answer to "Heard of Moose" is yes, yes and more yes.

OFFICIAL RELEASE FROM MOOSE INTERNATIONAL

MOOSE INTERNATIONAL, December 21, 2012 - The Supreme Council of Moose International today announced the retirement of William B. Airey as Director General and CEO, and the appointment of Scott D. Hart Executive Director of Mooseheart Child City and School, as the next leader of our 1.2 million member organization. Mr. Hart assumes his new duties immediately, while Mr. Airey, 71, will stay on with the Moose as a consultant through January 31, 2013 to help in the transition.

Mr. Hart, 43, started his career as an in-home caregiver on the Mooseheart campus in 1991, following his graduation from Illinois State University. During the next 12 years, he accepted roles with increasing responsibility before assuming his current position as Executive Director in charge of all functions for the community and school for children in need in March, 2003. His tenure at Mooseheart as Executive Director includes the establishment of national standards for residential childcare facilities; the expansion of benefits for children on campus through both local and national programs; and oversight of the current $10 million school renovation project scheduled to be completed in 2014.

Mr. Hart joined the Moose fraternity in September 1994 as a member of Batavia, IL Lodge 682. He also joined Mooseheart, IL Lodge 2655 as a Charter Member in December 2006 and served as Charter Governor from 2006-08. Mr. Hart has also been a member of Mecca Moose Legion 9 since 1999.

In accepting his new position, Mr. Hart said, "I know firsthand the outstanding dedication and care that is

provided by the men and women of the Moose around the world, especially in regards to children and seniors in need. This is an exciting opportunity to work cooperatively with our Board and introduce new ideas that will carry the fraternity forward, build our membership, and allow us to help even more individuals and communities."

Mr. Hart assumes overall responsibility for Moose International's five organizational units: the Loyal Order of Moose; the Women of the Moose; Mooseheart Child City and School; Moosehaven Retirement Community; and Moose Charities, the organization's fundraising arm. Gary Urwiler, Superintendent of Education for Mooseheart Schools, becomes Interim Executive Director of Mooseheart.

Mr. Airey joined the Moose International professional staff as Assistant Director of Membership in 1983 and was promoted to various positions within the Moose before achieving his current position of Director General and CEO. He will retire as the ninth Director General, having started his term in 2006 following the resignation of Donald Ross. Mr. Airey steps aside after leading the organization to a positive membership gain in 2011-2012 and the launch of a new public awareness program titled "Heard of Moose?"

KISSIMMEE, Florida - The Florida Pilgrims converged on Kissimmee for their annual weekend getaway on October 12th through the 14th. Four of the ten new Pilgrims were present. They took turns being our celebrity bartenders.

Those present had fun playing cards, visiting with their friends and making new friends. Of course a few beverages were consumed over the weekend.

On Friday evening the Moose Races were held. We call this the Pilgrim Downs. Those that bet on their favorite horses had fun. Maybe next year more will participate.

On Saturday a handful of our Pilgrims tried their hand at playing golf at the local golf course. At noon we had a pizza party. There was a meeting in the afternoon at which time we honored those Pilgrims that had passed since last year's weekend getaway. The new Pilgrims were introduced. The other

Pilgrims introduced themselves, gave the year they received their degree and introduced their wives or girlfriends. This was followed by the raffle drawings and the Chinese Auction which is always a great hit.

On Saturday night we took buses to the Pirate's Treasure Tavern. A great meal was served by some very lovely ladies. The dinner show was out of this world. It was by far the best we have ever been to.

It was late when the Pilgrims and their companions returned to the hotel. However a few decided they would have a few more of their favorite beverages before calling it a night.

All in all it was a great weekend. If you missed it be sure to make plans to join us next year.

Kissimmee Moose Alert Committee Chairperson Anita Nadeau, her daughter Cindi Hauge, granddaughters Rebecca, Shannon and Caitlyn Hauge, all members of Kissimmee Chapter 1849, except Caitlyn who is not quite old enough, wanted to help people “back home”. They, along with Anita’s husband Jim, moved from hard hit Ocean County, New Jersey to Florida 16 years ago. They started telling friends and family what they wanted to do.

Jim Nadeau, Kissimmee 2056 Administrator contacted Florida Bermuda Regional Manager Jerry Monk and told him what they wanted to do in the name of Moose Alert. Jerry sent e-mails to District Presidents and State Officers and the project was on it’s way. Anita’s contacts at work, Osceola County Transportation, Cindi’s contacts at her work, BB&T Bank, the granddaughter’s work contacts and face book postings resulted in a lot of donations in a very short time.

Winter Haven and New Smyrna Beach Lodges also had donations to pick up and Jim and step sons Brian and Gene Thatcher and Kissimmee cook Dallas Turner started filling an 18’ by 7’ trailer. It filled quickly. Five days after starting the collections it was time to send it North, only problem was massive overload of the trailer. Brian Thatcher who took over operation of Nadeau Trucking from Jim Nadeau came to the rescue by renting and donating a 26’ Penske Rental Truck. Brian, Gene, Jim and Supreme Counci lman Rodney Hammond (at right) proceeded to transfer the load and the journey began.

What should have been an 18 hour trip turned into 36 hours because the truck broke down by the time it reached Palm Coast, Florida. After Brian, Jim and Gene got it running again they only made it to Darien Georgia and it quit again. After a second visit by a mechanic, that could not diagnose the problem, they were towed to Savannah, Georgia, to a closed repair shop. The owner finally showed up at 2:30 in the morning and informed them that he could not fix it. After getting a couple of hours sleep in a local Days Inn they drove to a nearby Penske facility only to be told that they would have to wait for a replacement truck to come from Jacksonville, Florida and then they had to transfer the load themselves. After some hot tempers, heated exchanges and finally some intervention from Penske Leasing’s main office in Reading, Pennsylvania the new truck arrived along with

help to transfer the load and a re-imbursement of the rental fee and the trip resumed.

The loss of a day for delivery was a blessing in disguise because the place where they were supposed to deliver received a foot of snow from Winterstorm Athena.

The receiving area, the South Toms River, New Jersey Recreation Building had a lot of clothes already, but the people from Florida, who know hurricane situations, sent much needed yet often overlooked items like toilet paper, paper towels, diapers, toiletries, personal items, blankets, non-perishable food, handy wipes, pet food and toys. The contact person, Bill Gleason, from the local Emergency Management Office talked to Jim Nadeau at 9:00 am and said to give him about an hour to get some help to unload. Talk about volunteerism, one hour later there were 18 people, along with Alan Thatcher, Brian and Gene’s brother, who lives in that area and is also a member of Kissimmee 2056, there to help unload. One woman had been manning the center all week had a tree on top of her house but said that can wait because there were a lot of people that had it worse than she did.

The people in that area have now “Heard of Moose” and could not express their thanks enough. We got some free tolls, free meals and a whole lot of thank yous and handshakes. It made me really proud to be a part of this great Fraternity. Thank you Anita Nadeau, Cindi, Rebecca, Shannon and Caitlyn Hauge, Brian, Gene and Alan Thatcher, Rodney Hammond, Dallas Turner and the members of Winter Haven and New Smyrna Lodges for their help. Thank you Tropicana (Pepsico) for the pallets of water, Rick Patel for the food and all the individual donors that helped us reach nearly 12,000 pounds of donations.

Florida Bermuda Moose are “A Cut Above” and can certainly “Git ‘er Done”.

QUINCY, Florida - David Sloat, Junior Governor of Quincy Moose Lodge #2672, presented a check for $400 to the Karen Farmer, Director of The Alzheimer’s Project. Quincy Moose Lodge smoked approximately 30 pork butts and 50 turkeys for the Thanksgiving holiday to raise funds for the local Alzheimer’s Project. Because of a generous discount received on the turkeys, the Lodge was also able to donate 25 smoked turkeys to needy families in the community for Thanksgiving.

TAMARAC, Florida - Lauderdale Lakes Lodge 2267 - Tommy moose has been busy letting the communities know all about the Moose and how he cares about children’s comfort and safety. He’s visited the children At Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and he does monthly visits to the Chris Evert Children’s Hospital.

There is nothing sweeter than to hear a child stop crying when they see Tommy Moose, than see the smile on their face when Tommy hands him/her a coloring story book with some crayons. You never forget this, Tommy doesn’t.

Tommy also has not forgotten our seniors, he went to visit the seniors at Whitehall Nursing and Rehab Center and brought them cookies plus he did exercises with them, they loved it, plus it was fun for Tommy.

On September 11, he helped pay tribute to those we should Never Forget. He presented the Sheriff with several dozen Tommy Moose dolls.

In November Tommy helped the Children’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center fill over 1200 food bags, so that needy families could have Thanksgiving Dinner. He put a lot of smiles on the faces of all the helpers and they loved having their pictures taken with him.

As you can see our Tommy Moose program is much more than giving Tommy Moose Dolls to our first responders. It’s also about making a difference in our community and a child’s life. As the Tommy Moose storybook teaches the children, wishes can come true. It takes sometimes one person wanting to make it happen. There maybe someone in your lodge who has a wish or wants to make your program more. Give them support and encouragement. It could help your lodge be able to make a difference in your community.

TAMPA, Florida - It began Early-November with a toy drive at Riverview Lodge 2158. It continued into lateNovember with an Angel tree in the lobby of the Lodge. November ended with scissors, paper, tape and toys galore. Several Riders and Lodge members tore through dozens of rolls of wrapping paper as the toys were wrapped. It culminated in the annual holiday kickoff event for the Riverview Moose Riders.

On December 2nd, Moose Riders from Riverview 2158 and North Hillsboro 1741 joined forces with riders from American Legion. 41 riders left American Legion Post 148 in Riverview with one goal in mind...to bring a smile to the faces of many kids, special need individuals and Veterans as we could; to help them forget the hardships and struggles that they face every day, even if just for a single day. It will bring a smile to your face and, at the same time, a tear to your eye.

At 11:30 pm, we left the Post and headed north for the short ride to Hillsborough County Veteran's Memorial Park. As riders from all over converged on the park, organizers conducted an auction and several raffles to raise funds. At 1:00 pm, we began a 20 mile “ride through the country” to Evan's Park in Seffner, Florida. Upon arrival, the approximate 250 bikes were greeted by a news crew, 300 excited children and even a Gasparilla Pirate Krewe. Thanks to several of our rider and non-rider members. They loaded up the hundreds of toys, gifts and gift cards purchased and collected at the Lodge and drove directly to the park and had most everything set-up and ready to hand out. Shortly before 3:00 pm, the organizers started out with the Pledge of Allegiance, a Blessing and the release of a 40 Ceremonial White Doves. The dove symbolizes peace, hope and unity, as everyone comes together to support our cause.

Then the fun began.... passing out the presents. Riders, pirates, elves, children and Santa all started distributing gifts. Unlike a lot of toy drives, this one stands out because you get to hand your gifts to the children of your choice. With so many young faces watching and waiting in anticipation, it is not an easy choice to make. After a short while, with the gifts distributed, we enjoyed the excitement and smiles as we watched the children open the gifts.

Sadly, it wasn't ALL smiles though. One especially difficult time this year was meeting our homeless Veterans, attending for the first time. Homeless. Veteran. Two words that do not belong together...and yet, there they are; the reality of hardship staring you in the face. It was a pleasure to meet them all. It was touching as these displaced heroes were each handed a gift card and wished a Merry Christmas. It was an honor to shake their hands and personally thank them for their service.

For 19 years and counting Bill and Sheri Brown have been organizing, running and advertising the Cookson Hills Toy Run, always held on the first Sunday in December. The toy run, calls upon motorcyclists to ride bearing holiday gifts in a show of compassion and solidarity for the “forgotten children” of eastern Hillsborough County; for the special needs people of all ages and now, seniors and homeless veterans with no family.

We would love to have anyone that desires and wishes to join us next year and throughout this year at any events as we start preparation for the 2013 year. Just contact the Moose Rider Chairman at the Riverview Moose Lodge 2158. To view a video of the bikes arriving along with hundreds of pictures of the event, visit the Riverview Moose Riders Facebook page athttps://www.facebook.com/Riverview.Moose.Riders.

DEERFIELD BEACH, Florida - On December 1, 2012, West Boca Raton Lodge 204 and Chapter 2273 came out in force to lend a helping hand to our brothers and sisters in New York and New Jersey who had been the victims of Sandy’s wrath.

Headed by John Berile, Moose Rider Chairman and with strong support from Senior Regent Judy and Governor Crispy the West Boca members created a Boardwalk Experience inside the social quarters. With the carpentry skills of Lee Raissis, who made the booths, and the many other members who donated their organizational efforts and cooking skills, this small Lodge was able to raise $1636.00 to help on a project that was conceived even before the call for assistance was sent out by Moose International. Moose….. The Family Fraternity……. Reaching out to our brothers and sisters in their time of need.

FLORIDA SHERIFFS YOUTH RANCHES

I wanted to share a story that recently ran in the Winter edition of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches quarterly magazine “The Rancher”. It’s a story about a girl named Victoria, and I’m sure you’ll agree it’s a special one: When her father remarried, Victoria was sent off to live with other relatives. When that didn’t work out, she was brought to the Youth Ranch for an interview where her father essentially implied, “You better make them like you because your only other option is the street” She recalls that day with a great deal of pain. “Basically, he dumped me there. I was only 12 years old. I didn’t know anyone. I was so scared and felt abandoned and alone. I really believed I was ‘nobody’s kid.’” Moving into a home with nine other girls, Victoria immediately began to thrive. She bonded with her house parents, Mom and Pop Orkney, and got involved with school and church activities. Finally, she had found a home where she was accepted, loved and most of all WANTED! For three and half years, Victoria lived at the Youth Ranch. She became a typical teenager and her vivacious, positive personality infected everyone she met. She set high goals for herself and achieved excellence in all areas of her life. A local family took her under their wing and eventually she moved in with them as she finished her high school education. Victoria is now attending Flagler College in St. Augustine on a Youth Ranch Scholarship. She is a senior with a 3.5 GPA, majoring in Communications and Journalism with a special interest in photography. She studied a semester abroad in Italy and is considering pursing a Master’s Degree in Visual Arts.

This past summer, Victoria spoke to the Sheriffs of Florida and Saint Johns County Sheriff David Shoar was so impressed he invited her to apply for a part time job at the Sheriff’s Office. Today, along with a full load of classes, she is gaining solid, real life work experience in t h e S h e r i f f ’ s O f f i c e Communication division. Victoria brags about her job and is especially thankful for her mentor/supervisor, Deputy Catherine Payne.

“When I was 12, I felt abandoned and thought I was no one’s kid. I grew up fighting hard for a better life and given a chance, I believe good things can and will happen in my life. I promise I will never stop fighting for a brighter future! I have been given the opportunity to pursue my dreams because of the Sheriffs Ranch, our donors, the Sheriff’s Office and all those who helped raise me. Today, I am creating my own family with folks who love me and believe in me. I clearly see that the people who invest in you and stay in your life are your true family,” Victoria shared triumphantly. We are so proud of Victoria! She is collectively “OUR” daughter, a shining star who has only just begun her journey in life. Because of your generous support of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches through your gifts and prayers, children like Victoria will become productive, healthy adults who are able to face the future with a sense of direction, ability and hope. Without the financial help of donors that care about the future of Florida’s neglected children success stories like this simply wouldn’t happen. The mission of the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches is to prevent juvenile delinquency and to develop self-confident, law abiding and productive citizens, like Victoria, who will make a positive contribution to our communities for years to come. If you would like more information on how to help support the kids in our care, please contact Frank Kenny, Donor Relations Officer at 1-800-765-3797 or visit us at www.youthranches.org.
