120th Annual International Moose Convention

Keynote Address of the Director General 

  At eight o’clock p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, fifty years ago today, I graduated from high school.  All of a sudden I am beginning to feel old.  Time sure goes by fast.   

I can’t believe that it has been an entire year since we gathered in Orlando, Florida to introduce our theme for the year – I Believe!  Since departing Orlando, I have seen jewelry, tee shirts, jackets, ashtrays, posters, coffee mugs, and anything else you can imagine imprinted with the words, ‘I Believe’.  I think it’s great!  I think it is wonderful that our 

members believe.  What concerns me a bit though is – just what is it that they believe? 

  Do they believe in global warming?  Do they believe the Cubs will win the World Series?  Do they believe that we will ever see a $2.00 gallon of gas again?  I don’t know.  I hope they believe that they belong to the finest family fraternity known to mankind.  I hope they believe they make possible the finest children’s educational and residential facility in existence today; that they provide a beautiful campus in Florida offering the highest level of care possible for our elderly brothers and sisters; that they help make their communities better places to live all across North America and Great Britain; that many lives are changed because of their concern, their passion, and their love for humankind. 

  I want to personally thank each of you for taking the time to join us here in Las Vegas.  During this convention and conference you will hear of the many accomplishments that are made possible simply because you believe.  You will hear from our Executive Director of Mooseheart Scott Hart, our Executive Director of Moosehaven John Capes, our Director of Moose Charities and COO Len Solfa, our Grand Chancellor Jan Fregulia and staff at Moose International,

and you will hear from our Grand Regent Marge Walsh and our Supreme Governor Gene Huggins and members of the Supreme Council.  They will update you on our accomplishments, and on revisions to longtime fraternal programs, and they’ll introduce you to new programs designed to make stronger this fraternal program known as Moose ­ now 120 years old.  Let me, if you will, share with you highlights of what I believe will make this a convention to remember. 

  While I am sure that Scott Hart will tell you of the accomplishments of Mooseheart’s athletic teams during this past year, and the special attention that has been given to our Child City by the news media, because of our staff and our students, and further, that – thanks to the men and women of the Moose Mooseheart has again experienced a banner year, the most important fact is that on May 24 at 9:00 AM, twenty­one members of the Mooseheart’s Class of 2008 received their diplomas and vocational certificates during the 90th Commencement Ceremonies. 

  What is that worth?  How much should we, as a fraternity, pay for even one child to be able to live in a safe community, receive a valued education, taught how to be a supportive member of a family, understand their role in society and be sent off with the resources necessary to pursue it?  Members of the Moose have produced not one, but twenty­one energetic members of society ready and willing to do their thing.  So, tell me.  What is it worth?  How do you measure the value of a healthy human soul?  You don’t!  It’s like the Master Card commercial – a healthy, educated, productive young man or woman . . . priceless!  What is really important is that it happened because you believed, and because you gave your support!  Thank you.  In addition, I want to personally thank the Mooseheart staff, Executive Director Scott Hart, and members of the Mooseheart Board of Directors, including its Chairman, Past Supreme Governor Don Cotnam, for making it all possible. 

  I’m sure that John Capes is chomping at the bit, waiting to get to the microphone to tell you of what is happening at Moosehaven.  Many of you were there last year.  Remember?  The huge bang, the bolt of lightning, flames coming out of Peeler?  How could anyone forget?  Unfortunately, that distraction, and the weather kept many of you from seeing all that which was taking place in our haven of contentment.  However, taking a trip to Moosehaven now is like coming to Las Vegas after not being here for five years.  You almost don’t recognize the place.  At least you can’t believe the change that has taken place.  Well, I guarantee you won’t recognize Moosehaven the next time you return.  Several buildings have been leveled to make way for the Brandon Place neighborhood.  Residents are excited about the future of their community.  Members of the fraternity are coming to

realize that Moosehaven is potentially for ALL senior members, not just those senior members in need.  Truly Moosehaven is now a major benefit of Moose membership.  What do I mean?  Make sure you hear the report that John Capes brings to you during the joint session on Sunday morning – here in this room.  Changes in service!  Changes in admission policy!  Changes in daily activities!  Changes in the level of care provided our senior members!  We’ve created a new attitude, a new outlook, a new beginning.  How much should it cost to put a smile on the faces of our Moosehaven residents?  Once again – priceless!  The smile should be on your face as it all is taking place because you believed, and because you gave your support.  Thank you.  I express my thanks to Executive Director John Capes, his staff at Moosehaven and to each members of the Moosehaven Board of Directors, including Chairman of the Board Past Supreme Governor Ron Sweetman.  The sun shines a little brighter for our senior members because of you. 

  For more than two years, Leonard Solfa Jr. has provided leadership and direction, as Chief Operating Officer, in fulfilling our pledge to care for children in need and senior members.  The operation of Moose Charities has also fallen under Len’s direction and, together with the Directors of Mooseheart and Moosehaven Operations, his report will provide you with the details of what has happened this past year during the presentations on Sunday morning. 

  However, I wish to comment on how important the “Gimme Five” program is to the future of our beloved Mooseheart and Moosehaven.  I hope that everyone here has either donated the $182.50 for five years and now wears the appropriate lapel pin, or has pledged to give the $36.50 each year for five years.  These funds are building a tomorrow for hundreds of children and seniors who will benefit from our philanthropy in the years to come.  It is essential that we spread the word to members who don’t come to conventions, or conferences, or meetings and who don’t understand the importance of this monumental effort.  Len’s report will bring you up to date on the progress that has been made along with additional information regarding this most important fund­raising effort of the fraternity during his report.  To Len Solfa, the staff of Moose Charities and members of the Moose Charities Board, including its Chairman, Past Supreme Governor Ray Kesling, I say ‘thanks’.  To each of you who are currently ‘giving of your substance’ at an even higher level, I can find no better way of expressing my appreciation than by saying ‘thank you very very much’. 

  I hope that everyone present this evening came to Las Vegas to have a good time.  That’s what conventions are for.  However, conventions are also for obtaining information to take home and share with those members who

didn’t have the opportunity to attend this 120th Meeting of the Supreme Lodge and 96th Annual Convention of the Women of the Moose. 

  During this convention and conference, the men have only three general business sessions; the women have three; and there are three joint sessions.  That equates to just twelve hours of meetings over the entire four and one half days.  I hope that you will attend every session.  It is so important! 

  Each of you should have received a small pack of M&Ms as you entered the room this evening.  I requested that they be distributed for two reasons.  First, that you might enjoy a small snack during this report, and second that each individual ‘m’ in the packet gives you something to think about.  ‘M’s are crucial to the future of our organization.  Much of what has resulted in our success stories, or presented us with a challenge, can be found among the ‘m’s.  While our presenters during this convention and conference have much to share with you in the next few days, I want to spend my time introducing you to the ‘m’s. 

MEMBERS 

  In 1936, Supreme Secretary Malcolm R. Giles ended his report to the 48th Annual Convention of the Loyal Order of Moose, in Chicago, with these comments: 

  “. . . the building of the numerical strength of our Order is not only our greatest task, but our imperative task.  This must be done if the Fraternity is to live, if its great humanitarian activities are to continue and maintain the standards which have brought to our beloved Fraternity the praise of the world.  EVERYTHNG ELSE MUST WAIT  ­ EVERYTHING!  Nothing is important when placed alongside the importance of adding new members to our Lodges.” 

  This statement was made just two years following the founding of the Membership Department in Atlantic City, New Jersey in 1934.  Yes, it’s hard to believe that when we return to Chicago next year the Membership Department will be 75 years old.  Old, maybe; but just as important today as when it was organized for emergency purposes 74 years ago. 

  Why do you think our founding fathers placed in the Lodge ritual the membership obligation that clarifies and enforces our commitment to strengthen the Defending Circle?

  Why do we continually ask our Lodges to conduct short­term campaigns and promote the international and Association promotional programs?   

  Why do we assign a membership quota to every Lodge, Moose Legion and Chapter each year? 

  Why do we shower recognition and thanks on the 5% of our members who fulfill their obligation to sponsor new members? 

  Because building membership is essential!  It is the lifeblood of our Order.  It provides the revenue stream that allows the fraternity to maintain Mooseheart and Moosehaven, and to keep our Lodges, Chapters and Moose Legions in operation.  Giles had it right.  There is NOTHING more important to the Moose than building membership! 

  Most of you are aware that we planned on coming to this convention to proudly announce that we had a consecutive gain in active members for the first time in 26 years ­ what a great announcement that would have been!  But it isn’t to be.  The Moose Legion had an increase.  The Women of the Moose had an increase.  But the Loyal Order of Moose failed to produce an increase. 

  We failed to communicate to our members compellingly enough that we needed them to do what they said they would; sign at least one member!  We failed to persuade them that we needed their help to make our quota!  Now, you will hear from our Director of Membership Darrell O’Brien that 43.4% of our Lodges made their quota – 5% more than last year.  But, the women beat them.  They had 46.5% of the Chapters make their quota.  However, neither our Lodges nor our Chapters believed enough to place their focus in the membership program.  Even though we knew that more members would have meant more revenue for the fraternal unit and the fraternity as a whole, we didn’t place enough emphasis on building membership.  Even thought we knew that more members would have meant more participation in our activities, we didn’t take the time to run a campaign.  And even though we knew that more members would mean that we could better serve our communities, we didn’t take a few minutes during our board meetings to discuss steps that needed to be taken to ensure a successful fiscal year in membership growth.  More than half of our Lodges and half of our Chapters did not achieve their assigned quota.  Do we really believe?  Some of us do! 

  What really hurts, is that we failed not because of a few, but because of many.  Even though every one of us made the pledge to sponsor our friends and associates into membership, 94.36% of our members sponsored not one for the entire year!  Yet we have members who ask why we foolishly spend

money on sponsor awards.  I’ll tell you why.  We do it as a way of saying ‘thanks’ and to recognize the 5.64% of our members who last year did remember to fulfill their obligation.  We do it to say – you, are sponsors, are the preferred!  You made possible the achievements in membership that did take place last year.   

  Why aren’t more Lodges paying a year’s dues for the member who brings in two new members?  Instead, they say we can’t afford a ballpoint pen as a sponsor award.  How could we possibly give a year’s dues?  Simple!  Suppose your dues are $50.00 a year.  Is there anyone out there who wouldn’t spend $50.00 to get $100.00, knowing that at the end of the year, if we treated the two new members properly, we would have three members paying $50.00 a year instead of one?  We call it investing in the future. 

You know what is really sad?  We didn’t need the 94.36% to sign a member to reach our goal last year – we only needed 1.55% more Lodge members to simply sponsor one member – less than 2%, and we couldn’t get the job done!  Shame on us!  We’re better than that. 

A month ago I was reading a book by Bryan and Jeffrey Eisenberg entitled, “Waiting for Your Cat to Bark?”   While they talk about customers, I mentally substitute the word members.  Listen as I quote a section from the book and see if you arrive at the same conclusion as I did. 

“You want more sales?  Just bring in more people.  It’s a no­brainer, isn’t it?  So when a business wants to ramp up sales, they turn to marketers to create messages that will bring in more customers.  Those marketers, in turn, inevitably focus on devising more effective messaging, or creating incentives, rather than focusing on the quality of a customer’s experience . . .bringing more people into a system that does a poor job of converting them into buyers is purely a waste of money.” 

They go on to explain that you can build your customer base by increasing the number of people that come to you each month.  Perhaps you sell to 2% of those who come to you.  They make the premise that if you double the number of people, at the same conversion rate, you will double the number of sales.  So you can increase your membership by increasing the number of ‘asks’.  

 next part is important.  They suggest that instead of increasing your prospects, you increase your conversion rate; the same number of people coming in, but sell 4% instead of 2%.  Without spending any additional marketing funds you could increase membership without acquiring any

additional prospects.  They go on to point out that in addition, an improved experience is far more likely to delight your customers – and delighted customers become repeat customers.  They end the point by saying, 

“Any conversion process is like a leaky bucket – you pour water in, and water spurts out all the holes.  You can keep adding more and more water to the bucket, or you can patch up the holes.  Clearly, patching the holes first makes much better sense . . . . Create the delightful experience first, then drive the traffic.” 

Isn’t this what we have been telling our Lodge officers for years?  Deliver the product we sell!  As a member of your Lodge you must INSIST that your officers provide: 

a clean and attractive facility 

a monthly calendar filled with activities for all ages 

service to the community 

the friendliest place in town 

It all centers on customer service. 

For this reason, we have, for the first time, developed a special seminar, to be held this coming November at the magnificent Golden Nugget in downtown Las Vegas, that will focus on service – customer service!  Its theme is, ‘Bringing Home the Bacon’, meaning that if you provide what is required to operate a successful Lodge, the clean facility, the full calendar, the service and the friendliness, you will have plenty of members, filled with plenty of pride, enjoying plenty of activities, resulting in plenty of revenue, enabling the bills to be paid and money put aside for future growth – hence, ‘bringing home the bacon’. 

  Because of the subject matter of the seminar, we are encouraging our fraternal units to send officers, office personnel, bartenders, doormen, waitstaff – anyone who comes in contact with the member on a regular basis.  The seminar will focus on how to treat our members so they remain members.  For those who spend an extra day at the seminar we will provide training on how to treat our volunteers so they want to continue to serve as volunteers.  This is a program well worth the investment cost to the fraternal unit.  It will provide for better operations, the retention of members and an increase in revenue for the unit.

  I know you understand the importance of member retention.  The more members we retain, the less money we have to spend on membership production in order to show an increase in active members and the more money we will show in sales throughout any given month. 

  Members – bringing them in and treating them well ­ perhaps our most important ‘m’. 

Money 

  The second ‘m’ I wish to discuss with you this evening is money.  No matter where I go in this fraternity anymore, someone will come to me, and say, “all Moose International cares about is members and money”.  I agree!  Isn’t that the two pledges we made when we joined the Order? – to give of our substance – money, and to strengthen the defending circle – members?  It’s funny that those two responsibilities of the individual member are the two facets of our organization that are failing.  Membership is down, resulting in less per capita and fewer donations.  Therein we find our nemesis! 

  It’s a vicious cycle.  We fail to sponsor new members, and thereby reduce the revenue flow; we lose members whom we don’t replace and we reduce the revenue flow further.  We reduce the revenue flow and we have to cut service.  We cut service and we lose members.  We lose members and we again diminish the cash input to the organization. 

  Let me re­emphasize, from our obligation:  It is the responsibility of each and every member to build membership and to give monetarily to provide for our kids and our senior members.  Moose International has the responsibility to continually remind members of their obligation, and to develop programs to help our fraternal units build avenues in which they might help the member fulfill these responsibilities, these pledges. 

  When I recognized our boards earlier in this report, I purposely left out the Supreme Council and the Grand Council.  This past February, they didn’t run with their tails between their legs when they were called upon to make a tough decision.  Instead, they delivered! 

  Chief Operating Officer Len Solfa made it perfectly clear last year – as Director General Don Ross had done so in the past ­ that either we increased our membership or increased the revenue from each member to fund the care for our kids at Mooseheart and our senior members at Moosehaven.  Len made it clear we need 32 million dollars each year just to operate Mooseheart and Moosehaven.  Roughly, that divides out to $32 per member, per year.

In addition, we have to generate revenue to cover the operation costs of Moose Charities and Moose International – both the Supreme Lodge and Women of the Moose.  As of this February, annual per capita for the men was $16.00 and for the women was $12.00.  Go ahead and do the math.  With active membership for the men at 733,738 and for the women at 420,855 our revenue intake from ABCD and per capita would be $15,322,592.  In addition, we receive the income from our investments, and those of you who have a 401k or other portfolio know what has happened in the markets this past year, and it’s not great.  With your permission, we have been splitting the money received for the Endowment Fund, during the year, three­ways, 1/3 for Mooseheart operations – not Moose International, 1/3 for Moosehaven operations and 1/3 for the fund.  The balance of the money comes from Moose Foundation.  That being said, with little money being generated from investments, and a loss of revenue from ABCD and per capita per the loss in membership, where is the revenue coming from to pay the expense of operation?    

For the second time since 2000, in order to pay bills this past year, we had to utilize a portion of restricted funds from Moose Foundation; money that we must pay back. 

Realizing the situation we were facing, the Supreme Council and Grand Council took action to increase ABCD and per capita.  It wasn’t an easy decision.  There were hours of deliberation.  Everyone realized the membership would not be happy with the decision.  Membership numbers may drop.  Some Lodges may close.  All of these issues were taken into consideration before finally, having the intestinal fortitude to make the decision, our two councils did what had to be done.  They approved the respective increases in ABCD and per capita.  Effective with the September 30 dues payments, ABCD will increase to $28.00, and then a minimum of another $2.00 increase each year for five years.  Women of the Moose per capita will increase from $12.00 to $20.00.  I am so proud of our governing boards for the courageous stand they took, and you should be also! 

We now would have an increase in revenue, but not enough.  The Supreme Council voted to stop the split in current Endowment Fund contributions and put the entire donation into the fund instead of just one­third.  They rejected the budgets submitted by Moose International in May, and gave the staff two weeks, to resubmit with roughly 5% decreases, making sure that all was in order prior to the Las Vegas convention. 

Members wrote in and suggested that perhaps we needed to make cuts at Supreme Lodge headquarters, since we were asking the Lodges to make

sacrifices.  We’ve certainly done that!  We eliminated 24­1/2 positions from the budget, doing our best not to affect service being rendered to members or fraternal units.  It wasn’t easy.  We have cut back in items we believed would improve certain programs, and have suffered a setback in the forward move of the MMMs conversion.  Everything will still happen, but it will just take longer. 

We cut additional expenses – small ones taken singularly, but adding up.  Once a month we had provided donuts and fruit during the employee assembly – held to communicate updates in service programs or policy changes; that has been eliminated.  At the end of the year we held a dinner at a local restaurant to recognize and thank employees for their years of service.  Any employee with 1, 5, 10, 15, etc. years of service during the year were invited, along with a guest.  We have eliminated this program.  We gave turkeys to our employees at Christmas.  This program has been eliminated.  While we would like to make sure that our employees receive pay that is equal to similar positions in our Fox Valley area in Illinois, we are limiting any pay increases this coming year.  We will be cutting the length of council and board meetings, handling as much as possible via teleconferencing or videoconferencing.  You will quickly realize during this convention and conference that, for the first time ever, the Director General and Supreme Governor, the Chief Operating Officer, the Grand Chancellor and Grand Regent will host no hospitality room at the convention.  There simply was no way to justify the expense when funds are needed for our kids at Mooseheart.  And there are many, many more cuts in expenses. 

The bottom line is that our Chief Financial Officer Joe Mech was able to resubmit a budget to the Supreme Council this month that is more than $2 million dollars less than the one submitted last month.  It was painful to do so in many areas, but it was done.  Done, because of a staff that worked together as a team, and a council that did their due diligence and duty as members of the corporate board.  I want both the Supreme Council and Grand Council to stand and face you so that you can show them your appreciation for being the true leaders that they are. 

I thank these Lodges, who rather than say Moose International forced us to raise our dues, kept the dues the same and instead, spent hours in officer meetings planning more events and activities that would bring more members into the Social Quarters, increasing revenue; who raised the price of merchandise, rather than dues; who worked with their volunteer fundraisers to acquire additional funds rather than chase members away who perhaps didn’t understand the urgency of this matter.  You are also to be congratulated for being leaders in the know!

Most importantly, I want to thank the members who continue to have faith in the leadership of Moose International.  While we received numerous emails, phone calls and letters of complaint regarding our decision to increase ABCD and per capita, it was refreshing to go to the YAHOO, non­corporate Moose website, and read unsolicited comments from members of the Order.  I visited the site numerous times over the past three months.  Allow me to share some of these comments: 

For the most part, I don’t know the names of the members, and feel that I shouldn’t share their email address for reasons of privacy, but will quote them word for word. 

“My personal opinion after 25+ years of membership in this great fraternal organization is that some of us, perhaps all of us, should read the oath we took when we first joined!” 

A second writer said,  

“All of this complaining about this increase is getting old.  It seems that many of our members have got Moose tunnel vision and are unable to look beyond the confines of their particular lodge.  I am not a Moose employee or crony and have plenty of issues with the intl. As a member of a ‘lodge activity group” but that’s for another rant. 

“The bottom line is this; operating expenses for ALL lodges are going up.  Diesel fuel is at or over $4 per gallon and shows no sign of coming down any time soon.  This is the fuel that powers the . . . food trucks and service trucks that service Mooseheart, Moosehaven and our lodges.  Don’t hold your breath waiting for these industries to absorb the cost to ensure the Moose operating expenses stay in check.” 

“As of this writing gas in Kane Co. Illinois for 89 octane is $3.79 per gallon.  This is what goes into the Mooseheart vans that transport the kids.” 

“In Illinois, Commonwealth Edison and Northern Illinois gas, two of our local utility companies are also raising their rates.” 

“Employees of the organization, as we all do, need occasional cost of living adjustments in their salaries.” 

“These are only the cost increases that immediately come to mind, you can sure the intl. is having to deal with a litany of others as well!”

“Mooseheart is what it is in large part due to its land holdings and campus; these are things that need to be maintained for the integrity of the organization.  I assume that the organization has financial assets that could be tapped to buy some time as well as selling off its land, but what would be the motivation?  Keeping the denizens of the social quarters content a little while longer with a dues freeze does not contribute to long­term fiscal health for the organization as a whole.” 

“Your lodge is always going to offer one of the best deals in the area.” 

A third member wrote,  

“This post is in response to all of the emails and post regarding the members of the L.O.O.M and W.O.T.M. that are grumbling about monetary increase in the next few years.” 

“As a member of the L.O.O.M. for six years and being a PG and Past Moose Legion President all I can say is please stop all of the dissension.  I am proud to be a member of the greatest fraternal organization in the world and am tired of hearing everyone grumble about the increases facing each of us.” 

“I am on disability and also with a limited income yet I will pay any increases that may be coming.  If everyone would just accept that changes come and go all the time.  Some for the better, some not so good, we would be able to concentrate our efforts on our children and seniors and not the dues going up or any other monetary dilemma.” 

Here’s another comment,  

“What is the big deal about a per capita increase?  A Lodge does not have to raise dues to pay the increase.  How about a special fundraiser, or an extra 50­50 drawing a week?  There are many ways to raise funds for the per capita increase without raising dues.” 

“An additional observation:  Those that protest a modest dues increase never seem to be short of money to spend for alcoholic beverages.  And it is usually the beverages that play a part in the expression of disgruntlement.  As the man said, did you join a bar, or a fraternal organization?”

And another,  

“Hey!!! Ya’all want to hear someone whine?  I do every time my husband pays his Shriners dues $75.00, plus Knights, etc., and they have no mercy.  If they want to raise’m they raise’m.  So with all the preaching I do about supporting “our” school and “our seniors” I’m willing to support any increase.” 

I can’t disagree with this one,  

“I’m not against it.  I sure don’t want to see Mooseheart/Moosehaven go down on my watch.  If local lodges have issues with it that leads to thinking that this may kill membership ………those lodges have way bigger worries.” 

Here’s another,  

“You took an oath at enrollment to support them and now you want to complain because you are being asked to uphold the oath you took.  Did you join the Moose or the bar?  Go ahead, drop your membership and go elsewhere for your food, drinks and fellowship, and while you are there, enjoy spending the extra hundreds and maybe thousands of dollars for the same food and drink somewhere else.  Think about it and please stand beside those of us who truly believe in what we do.  The children and aged depend on us.  I for one will not turn my back on them.  I believe; do you?  And before you get on your bandwagon, no I am not wealthy.  I live paycheck to paycheck just like most Moose members do.” 

I could go on for the rest of the evening, but we don’t have the time, and the message is the same.  Let me share just one more: 

“Look, to me it’s very simple.  Did you join the Moose to have a cheap beer?  Or did you join because you really believe in taking care of children or our elderly or infirmed members?  If you answer yes to the first, you will in all probability not pay your dues after September.  If you answered yes to the second, you already know the answer.  Moose International is there to ensure that Mooseheart and Moosehaven are there for as long as there is a need – not to ensure that your ‘club’ survives.  There are Moose lodges out there I would pay $100.00 a year to belong to and there are those out there that don’t deserve the $30 that they are charging.  Which category does your lodge fit into?” 

That’s what some of our members have been saying.  To those of you who support the action that has been taken, knowing that we have some difficult

roads to travel in the future, I sincerely thank you.  To those who are struggling with a decision – I believe I can’t give you a response directly, as I don’t believe you are in this room.  I do hope that the latter category of member has an opportunity to talk with a believer before they make the decision they will someday regret ­ the decision to quit paying dues in the Moose Family Fraternity. 

MOOSEHEART 

  You know the next ‘m’.  It’s Mooseheart, the Child City ­ probably the ‘m’ that most of us talk about more than any of the others.  Since I have already mentioned how grateful the fraternity is to have such quality members serving on the Board of Directors, and since Executive Director Scott Hart will bring you up to date on what has been taking place on the campus during this last year, I will not spend a great deal of time talking about Mooseheart. 

  However, Mooseheart’s pride is in its graduates, and this year twenty­one young men and women received their high school diplomas and vocational certificates because of you – the men and women of the Moose.  Without your support of their home, their school, and their life – none of this would have been possible.  In addition, I am proud to inform you that twenty of these students have received scholarships to attend colleges and universities.  Two of them will be attending Purdue University, all because of the generosity of a professor at Purdue who read about Mooseheart in the three­part series on the Child City that appeared last November in the Chicago Tribune.  For those who attended Mooseheart’s 90th Commencement, the pride overflowed the fieldhouse.  It was truly a memorable day, not only for those who studied and were rewarded, but also for those who made it all possible.  I ask Scott Hart to take back to the men and women who lead the way for our students as teachers in their school, and family teachers in their homes, our deepest thanks for their dedication and loyalty to giving our kids the education and skills needed for success, and a future that is filled with hope and promise. 

MOOSEHAVEN 

  Home, security, contentment, love, purpose, friendship – and the list goes on – all are part of Moosehaven, also with a capital ‘M’.  Something new and exciting takes place in the Haven of Contentment each and every day.  Executive Director John Capes and the Moosehaven Board will fill you in on the latest and most exciting news regarding our ‘city of seniors’ on Sunday morning.  So, as with Mooseheart, I will not take time this evening.

  I do want to encourage each person present to make sure he or she has taken the time to review the material being distributed this week on Brandon Place at Moosehaven, our newest fraternal service, soon to be available to members of the fraternity.  No longer will you have to surrender all income and assets to take advantage of our service to senior members offered on this campus; nor will you have to give up your automobile.  You will be able to be an active part of the Orange Park community as well as Moosehaven.  You will be able to choose the level of service you wish to receive.  Yet, you will be able to enjoy a carefree lifestyle, on the banks of the St. Johns River in sunny Florida, knowing the fraternity is looking after your needs.  Moosehaven has now truly become one of our greatest benefits of membership and each of us should be telling our friends and associates about the retirement program available to members of the Moose.  I guarantee you they will have a problem equaling the level of care received for the dollar paid anywhere else. 

  Make sure you are in this room for John’s report on Moose senior living in the 21st Century, this Sunday morning! 

Moose Charities 

  It is said that ‘charity begins at home’, and that is certainly true for our next ‘m’ with Moose Charities.  While Moose Charities is one of our important ‘m’s, I will again leave their report to Chief Operating Officer Len Solfa on Sunday morning.  I simply want to praise them for their efforts and the outstanding job they do in making sure that the needs of our children and senior members are met ­each and every year. 

  This they do, in addition to so much more – such as processing contributions for the Yellowstone Youth Conservation Corps and the Flight 93 Memorial.  And regarding Moose Charities, we need to clear up a misunderstanding this evening.  Now that we have the Gimme Five Program, there are members that believe that the Mooseheart/Moosehaven Endowment Fund is dead.   

The program is not dead.  We continue to recognize the generosity of our loyal contributors to the Endowment Fund Club and the League of Guardians.  Tuesday evening we will host a dinner for this year’s League of Guardians – men and women who have truly ‘given of their substance’.  Qualifiers for the League of Guardians have donated a minimum of $1,000 during the past fiscal year, but many have contributed $2,000, $5,000, $10,000 or more.  Not only are they gifts of love, but many of these gifts are personal sacrifices given for the betterment of our children and senior members.

  We thank Chief Operating Officer Len Solfa and the staff of Moose Charities for the development of the Gimme Five Program.  While it was introduced just 12 months ago, many thousands of our members have already stepped forward to give the equivalent of a nickel in the morning, and a nickel at night, every day for five years working out to a total of $182.50.  They understand that this is not a replacement of the Mooseheart/Moosehaven Endowment Fund, but a special ‘Endowment Fund for the 21st Century’ to protect our children and seniors in the future.  We have accomplished a great deal during these early months of the program, but we have such a long way to go.  I personally thank the men and women who have volunteered to serve under Grand Chancellor Emeritus Tonie Ewoldt and Past Supreme Governor Tom Hatcher as members of the team to promote this effort of love. 

  While the program is designed to allow individual members the opportunity to make a difference, tremendous support has been shown by the men and women who attend conventions and conferences and willingly participate in fundraisers at each and every meeting; tugging just a little harder on the purse strings.  God bless you! 

  In addition, we have great support from many of our fraternal units.  I will share just one story with you.  Bob Elston, the Gimme Five Chairman for the Indiana Moose Association was kind enough to share with me a letter he wrote to Richmond, Indiana Lodge No. 167.  I share with you just a portion of the letter: 

  “At a time when our fraternity is stumbling financially, it is very rewarding to be associated with men like you.  Thank you for your contribution. 

  As long as we have members like the men of Richmond Lodge #167, our fraternity will live on forever. 

  It is true that we have undertake a huge task with the Gimme Five Program, but once again, you have proven a burden heavy to one is borne lightly by many. 

  In talking with Chris Perry, Director of Fraternal Fundraising. . ., your Lodge is the first in the nation to do this.” 

  What did they do?  The Lodge donated $19,345.00 – equivalent to $36.50 for each member of Richmond, IN Lodge No. 167 to cover their first year’s donation to Gimme Five.  In the cover letter from the Administrator was the closing sentence,

  “I cannot ensure that we will be able to do this for the four remaining years of the program, but we are able to this first year.  Hope this helps!” 

  Yes, Administrator Bob Frost, it does help.  It helps a great deal!  On behalf of the entire fraternity I thank you, the officers and the members of Richmond, IN Lodge No. 167 for your tremendous show of support.  You definitely made a difference! 

 

Other ‘M’s 

There are so many more ‘m’s.  I have spoken to you about members, money, Mooseheart, Moosehaven and Moose Charities.  There simply isn’t time to discuss them all tonight.  Director of Fraternal Programs Shawn Baile will update the men on Moose Activities and Moose Programs on Monday afternoon; two very important ‘m’s.  Director of Membership Darrell O’Brien will communicate to the men the importance of Moose Member Benefits on Sunday morning; not only for you personally, but as a real sales tool for member sponsors.  He will also be speaking to the Women of the Moose during their conference.  Director of Information Systems Eric Vonhoff will update us on MMMs, Sunday morning.  This program is so important to the progress of our fraternal units and our main means of communication and updates to our operating system.  Director of Communications and Public Affairs Kurt Wehrmeister will tell us of your best efforts in communicating our message Tuesday morning, and Director of Education and Training Sue Hawkins will provide us with the latest on Moose University, also during that Tuesday session.  During that important Tuesday session another big ‘m’ will take place – our annual March of Checks.  We are asking that Lodges, Associations and individual members follow with the procedures outlined by Moose Charities in making their donations in order that the line move as quickly as possible. 

  I wish I had time to discuss the importance of another important ‘m’ ­ mentoring.  I don’t know where I would be today had it not been for Past Supreme Governors Don Eisel and Loyd Hawley from Ohio.  They kept me under their wing and lent support and encouragement during my years in the Ohio State Moose Association.  My sponsor kept me involved in my early years in Pennsylvania.  Past Supreme Governors Jay Stoehr, Phil Morse, Carl Weiss, Gordon Jeffery and so many more led me through this pathway of fraternalism.  I don’t know where I would have been without them.  Finally, Past Directors General Paul P. Schmitz, Herb Heilman, Paul O’Hollaren, Frank Sarnecki and Donald Ross never let me give up.  I was always reminded of what I was doing for our children at Mooseheart and our senior members at

Moosehaven.  They filled me with knowledge and showed me how I made a difference in the lives of others.  They were my fraternal heroes and I will never forget them for what they did for me.  If you are not mentoring someone today; taking them to Lodge and Chapter meetings, sharing with them the experience of attending District and Association meetings, getting involved with the Moose Legion and working to become a Star Recorder, explaining to them the pride in becoming a Fellow, Pilgrim, Academy of Friendship or College of Regent degree holder, you need to start now!  Mentors build leaders of tomorrow.  They are so important to our future. 

MEETINGS 

  I briefly mentioned the importance of meetings, another one of our ‘m’s.  Be it Lodge or Chapter, Moose Legion or Council of Higher Degrees, convention or conference, these meetings are so important.  It is there where we build fraternal friends and enjoy what we refer to as fraternalism; where we communicate on all aspects of our Order; where we have fun; where we learn of the needs of our members, the death of a loved one, the success story of a Brother or Coworker.  Meetings are so important! 

  I shared one letter with you.  Allow me to share one meeting.  One important meeting!  It took place in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on Saturday May 17, a Summit Meeting on Canadian Operations.  There were 34 men and women in attendance; representatives from British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec, Regional Managers representing the Provinces of Canada, the Supreme Governor, Grand Regent, Grand Chancellor, Director of Membership, Director of Operations for the Women of the Moose, our Supreme Meeting Planner, Director of Purchasing Charlie Palochko and yours truly, the Director General. 

  We broke bread together the night before and got to know each other.  Saturday, from 8 AM to 5 PM we met.  We had one goal – to outline ways to build the membership and the program of the Moose in the country of Canada.  Period!  Nothing else! 

  I was so impressed with the dedication of those members from Canadian Lodges and Chapters who attended.  Many came at their own expense – transportation, room and meals.  They came because they cared.  They came because they wanted to make a difference.  The end result was amazing!  In 8 hours, we were able to identify changes that, if implemented, could build a Moose program in Canada that would support Moose International, Mooseheart, Moosehaven and the Brothers and Coworkers in Canada.  Actually what took place was more than amazing, it was beyond belief!

  Less than 7 days later, the Supreme Council, in session, heard the recommendations of that group of men and women and approved the formation of a Council on Canadian Operations; a council that would oversee the program in Canada and make sure that we meet the needs up North.  After all, Mooseheart and Moosehaven are in the United States.  Why can’t we serve kids in need and senior members in Canada?  We can!  YCC is an American program.  Can’t we raise funds for environmental programs in Canada?  We can!  Most of our member benefits are not valid in Canada.  Could we develop benefits for Canadian members?  We can!  Canadians cannot pay dues utilizing a credit card.  Could we look into this?  We are!  Canadians want the age of membership to be 18, and we have come to believe that they make a valid point.  Our youth program, still in a development, ran into problems because we found that ages 13 – 17 could possibly work together, but that when we added ages 18 – 20, we ran into roadblocks.  So let the 18­year­old join the fraternity; learn how to serve on a committee, plan a budget, be an officer, and raise funds.  Sometime later in life, when the kids are raised and mom and dad want to give back to the community, they will have already have the experience we need to lead our Lodges and our Chapters.  What a great idea!  Look for it as a change to the General Laws next year in Chicago. 

  Here is the council that was formed.  Members will be installed on Wednesday morning following approval during the meeting of the Supreme Lodge.  In addition to the Director General and the Supreme Governor, the council will be comprised of the newly announced Director of Canadian Operations Robert Longchamps, and the two additional Regional Managers overseeing Canadian provinces – James Reid and Pierre Chalifoux. 

  Serving as Chairman of the Council on Canadian Operations is Dennis K. Johnson, Medicine Hat, Alberta Lodge 1073.  Also from Alberta will be George MacRae from Wetaskiwin Lodge 1559 and Lillian McFaul of Forest Lawn Chapter 1512.  Serving from British Columbia is David Kruger from Revelstoke Lodge 1241 and Laura Sandberg of Prince George, Chapter 936.  Serving from the Province of Ontario is Wendy Matthew a member of Chatham Chapter 304 and Andrew Atkinson from Hamilton Lodge 1142; and from Quebec, Maryse Dexter of Home Chapter 3000 and Marc St. Pierre from Port Alfred Lodge 1879. 

  These men and women will meet on a regular basis and make recommendations for policies and programs for the Moose fraternal operation in Canada.  I know you join me in wishing them well as we move forward with this historic fraternal movement.

MARVEL 

  Here’s an ‘m’ that wasn’t originally on my list, but that was simply an oversight – marvel – something that causes wonder or astonishment.  The Moose continually do things that cause wonder or astonishment. 

  In Orlando last year, Director of Fraternal Programs Shawn Baile shared, in his report, the story of the unbelievable job the men and women of the Moose and the Moose Legion did with raising money for the Flight 93 Memorial Project.  He introduced to you, family members of the heroes of Flight 93 for their comments, and further introduced to you the Superintendent of the Flight 93 Memorial Joanne Hanley.  At the close of her remarks he presented to her a check from the Moose fraternity in the amount of $421,121.10, although the actual check sent to the fund was in the amount of $428,434.60.  More money had been remitted to Moose International by the time we returned from Orlando. 

  This brought considerable recognition to the fraternity from others involved in this historic endeavor.  Following the convention, I received a call from the Chairman of the Flight 93 National Memorial Steering Committee Chris Sullivan, asking if I would serve on the committee.  In his letter of invitation, prior to the call, Chris wrote, “Because of your dedicated philanthropy, I would like to extend an invitation for you to join the National Campaign Steering Committee for the Flight 93 National Memorial.  We need national leaders, such as yourself, to step forward in extraordinary ways to see the Flight 93 National Memorial come to fruition and to act as standard­bearers by providing examples of commitment for others across the nation to follow.” 

I was honored; honored to be asked ­ honored to serve. 

  From the inaugural meeting of the Steering Committee last October, to the recognition given the Order by First Lady Laura Bush in Austin, Texas during the National Park Foundation’s Summit on Partnership and Philanthropy, to each monthly meeting of the committee, I am in awe by the expression of gratitude continuously being given to the Moose by members of the committee, family members of the heroes who died for a great cause, and others who have heard of the generosity of a group of men and women called Moose. 

  Chairman Chris Sullivan, Honorary Co­Chairmen General Tommy Franks and Former Governor of Pennsylvania Tom Ridge have given greatly of their time and energy for this project.  Chris has continuously requested from me a

time where he could express his appreciation personally to the men and women who made this contribution possible.  I invited him to come to Las Vegas. 

  For those of you who may not know, Chris is a graduate of the University of Kentucky ­ and a founder of the Outback Steakhouse restaurant company.  Along with his partners, Bob Basham, Tim Gannon and Trudy Cooper, the first Outback Steakhouse was opened in March 1988.  From 1991 to 2005, he was Chief Executive Officer of the company after serving as President since 1988. 

  Headquartered in Tampa, Florida, there are now over 900 Outback Steakhouses worldwide.  Outback also operates over 300 Carrabba’s Italian Grills, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar, Roy’s Cheeseburger in Paradise, Bonefish Grill, Paul Lee’s Chinese Kitchen and several other hospitality­related businesses.  His restaurant management career began in 1972 as restaurant manager trainees in the Steak and Ale restaurant group. 

  Chris serves numerous organizations in various positions including Florida Council of 100 Executive Committee, the Florida Chamber of Commerce; Board of Directors for the Florida Council on Economic Education, Lowry Park Zoological Endowment Foundation; Chairman’s Board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America; Co­Chair, Board of Directors Kentucky Speedway; the Advisory Board for the Salvation Army; and Vice Chairman for Scripps Florida Funding Board; and the employment Policies Institute. 

  Chris lives in Tampa, Florida and has two children, Alex and Ashley. 

  Brothers and Co­Workers, it is indeed my honor and pleasure to present to you the Chairman of Outback Steakhouse, Inc. and Campaign Chairman for the Flight 93 National Memorial, Chris Sullivan.

  Chris, Ken and Dale, thank you so very much for stopping by.  I want you to know that contributions for the Flight 93 Memorial continue to arrive in our office.  I know we had members outside stores during Memorial Day Weekend and will have volunteers accepting donations for Flight 93 during the weekend closest to September 11 this year.

  While I know you were happy with the contribution we made last June, I would like to up the total so that we cross the one­half million dollar mark with this check in the amount of $100,000, bringing the total contributed to date to $528,434.60, more than a half million dollars! 

MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN 

   While I have been asked by staff to introduce the theme of next year’s membership campaign – another ‘m’ ­ the credit for the theme goes to you.  You created it; you made it possible; you enable its existence day after day. 

  Earlier I quoted the definition of the word ‘marvel’; something that causes wonder or astonishment.  That’s you.  You cause wonder and astonishment.  You do it at home, at the office or at work, in the community and in your Lodge and Chapter.  You do it with your time, your talent, and your giving.  You do it with loyalty, with dedication and with love.  You are truly unbelievable! 

  Because of you, and the millions of men and women who served before you, just look what has been accomplished: 

a City of Children unequaled anyplace in the world, where more than 11,000 boys and girls have been given the opportunity for a decent start in life because of the generosity of the men and women of the Moose; 

a Haven of Contentment for senior members that is the epitome of senior living and senior care made possible only because of membership in the Order created and maintained by the men and women of the Moose; 

a spirit of giving that goes far beyond the philanthropic endeavors of Mooseheart and Moosehaven, including the project for the Flight 93 National Memorial we just reported, a 20 year program with Yellowstone National Park and the YCC Program – constituting a total of over $3,000.000, a Youth Awareness Program that has made contact with millions of boys and girls in grade school, making them aware of the perils of drugs and alcohol, stranger danger, and more, the tens of millions of dollars in service each year to local community projects such as the Salvation Army, Red Cross, Scouting, Veterans Programs, Muscular Dystrophy, Meals on Wheels, Cancer, youth sports, and the list goes on and on; Our new partnerships with Safe Surfin’ USA and Special Olympics.  There is just no end to what you have made possible through our program of community service;

The fun and fellowship of being a Moose that is felt by each and every member who participates in our program of sports and family activities each and every month at Moose Family Centers throughout North America; the excitement of participation in the Moose Travel Program, the gift of friendship that accompanies membership, the fraternal care that is given to all members during sickness and difficult times and so much more; 

The many benefits that are now a part of membership in the fraternity; benefits that save our members hundreds, even thousands of dollars a year if they are utilized.  Discounts on medical prescriptions, hotel rooms, car rentals, flowers, entertainment, food, insurances, paint, and the list goes on. 

Do you understand what I mean when I say you have made this fraternity something that causes wonder and astonishment? Something that when non­members are told they respond with the statement, “that’s unbelievable”?  

  My answer is simply this – it’s more than unbelievable, it’s beyond belief. 

Moose – Beyond Belief, the theme for our membership drive for 2008 – 2009.  Remind those members back home who didn’t come to Las Vegas of the difference we have made in the lives of others – a difference that is Beyond Belief.  Tell them of the accomplishments we have achieved during this past year – accomplishments that are Beyond Belief.  Impress upon 

them the reasons we will overcome the stumbling blocks that have been placed before us – because of their abiding loyalty and commitment; a loyalty and commitment that is Beyond Belief. 

  I was asked to allow time in my report to list the problems we face in the future.  That was easy; there is only one.  That problem is attitude.   

We must accentuate the positive; eliminate the negative – and that we will do.  We will do it because individually, you are the marvel; you are truly someone who causes others to wonder; entire communities to stand back in

astonishment.  You will return home and extend the invitation to others to join, realizing that ‘a burden heavy to one is borne lightly by many’.  You will recruit others to help you spread the work on Gimme Five.  You will encourage the officers of your Family Center to organize more family activities, provide better service to members and work even harder to remain the friendliest place in town. 

  This, I know you will do – because truly – you are Beyond Belief!
