Steria is a trusted partner to the European Commission in its pursuit of safer, more secure borders, travel and trade.

Schengen Information System ll (SIS II) In 2004 the European Commission awarded an international consortium led by Steria the contract to deploy an upgraded version of the Schengen Information System (SIS). This is the system harmonising external border controls to allow free movement inside the Schengen Area of Europe. The new system SIS II is connected with 28 Schengen states and incorporates new technologies, such as biometrics. It allows the secure sharing of large amounts of information, such as alerts on wanted people or stolen aircraft, via a distributed system (SOA, web services). For a more complete set of information, SIS II and VIS (see right) run on a common technical platform.

Taxud Steria is helping in the modernisation of the mission-critical communications network used by European Union member states to share customs and tax information and protect against tax and customs fraud. The new network (CCN2) will provide mission-critical interoperability and communications links between the 28 EU member states’ customs and tax operations and the multiple systems in operation across the region. In 2011 the CCN handled more than 1.2 billion data exchanges for EU countries.

Visa Information System (VIS) Steria created and deployed a large-scale information system known as VIS to handle visa requests from travelers entering European countries in the Schengen Area. VIS has allowed information to be shared between Member States concerning requests, acceptances and refusals of visas – 45 million requests per year – since the end of 2006.
