March Madness Where can anyone get beat at any time? During March Madness, hearts are broken, and lives are changed.

March Madness is one of the most anticipated tournaments of the year for every basketball better in the world. It is that time of the year when 68 college teams meet for single elimination matches as the teams progress from 68 to 16, then to 4 and finally the one champion. Teams work all year long to get to this tournament. March Mayhem remnants its beginnings to the state of Illinois from 1908 when it had been a tiny event backed by the

state of Illinois High School Organization via invites. Numerous senior high school boys’ basket ball squads took part in this yearly event. From those humble origins, the event grew to a statewide institution engulfing 900 schools in the competition in the late 1930s. We’re Back!

From struggling to reach 12 wins last season the Indiana Hoosiers racked off 23 wins in the regular season, and winning one game in the Big Ten Tournament before losing to Wisconsin, and just recently a victory of New Mexico State in the round of 64 in the NCAA Tournament. This is the first time in four years that the Hoosiers are back to the NCAA Tournament.

During the Wisconsin game IU received their biggest loss of the season, and I don’t mean the game. IU senior guard, Verdell Jones the Third jump stopped on a fast break and tore his right ACL. IU head coach Tom Crean was fighting back tears as he was asked about Verdell’s condition after the game, “It sucks. It really sucks to see one of our seniors, a leader, go down like this in his last season of basketball. He’s been with me all four years I’ve been here, this is just really tough.” Verdell has been a ‘go to guy’ in some games when IU needs a big shot, but one of the most memorable things he did this season was when he drove the ball down court and then dished the ball out to Christian Watford who hit the trey to knock off number one Kentucky.

In the past three seasons IU had only beaten two top 25 teams. This season IU has knocked

off three top five teams in Kentucky, number two Ohio State, and number five Michigan State. IU also had another big win against number 13 Michigan. Although the Big Red had a phenomenal season at home, they struggled to win away from Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers only won five games that weren’t in front of the best student section in the nation.

Cody Zeller has been a humongous part of IU’s return to winning big games as well. The freshman earned Big Ten Freshman of the year honors. Another big contribution has come from sharp shooting juniors Jordan Hulls and Christian Watford who are first and third in three point percentage in the Big Ten. The number two slot is held by IU senior guard Matt Roth, who shoots three pointers like they’re layups. Sophomore’s Victor Oladipo and Will

Sheehey have also proved to be two of the best defenders in all of college basketball. Freshman Remy Abell has also come in off the bench to provide a big spark for IU. The Hoosiers also have the number nine recruiting class in the nation for 2012.

Kelly, already had his hands full to say the

least with his quarterback choice. He had

three stellar quarterbacks by the names of

Tommy Rees, Everett Golson, and Andrew

Hendrix. And now, to add even more

competition to the position, Notre Dame

recently signed five-star Gunner Kiel.

Kiel is from our home-state of Indiana and

attended Columbus High School. His stats

were off the charts in high school. Kiel first

made headlines when he committed to his

childhood school, Indiana University. This

was big news because IU’s football team

has never really stood out; in fact last year,

their record was 1-11. After reconsidering

schools, however, he then pulled out of IU,

and committed to LSU. He remained at LSU

for a while before reconsidering again and

decided to commit to Notre Dame.

He is considered to be “one of the most

pro-style quarterback of the nation” says

BleacherReport.com. Bleacher Report also

commented on his ability to read defenses,

and his throwing accuracy. They also

mention his underrated athleticism. I saw

his highlights on Bleacher Report from his

senior year, and I have to say… it was

amazing. He makes good decisions; he is

clearly comfortable in the pocket… just an

incredible quarterback. Check out the

As for next season, I still believe in starting

Everett Golson. My personal opinion is that

they should redshirt Kiel. While I believe

this, Bleacher Report’s poll between the

four quarterbacks disagree. 63% say Kiel,

15% say Rees, 12% say Hendrix, and 10%

say Golson. I strongly disagree with this

poll, and still firmly believe that Everett

Golson is the answer for Notre Dame

Football.

NEW PRAIRIE SPORTS

Cheer vs. Poms

High school is coming soon for eighth graders. That means there are tryouts for numerous sports for the new freshman. For a lot of girls that means they have to pick between two very fun sports; Cheerleading and the Poms Dance Team. Cheer tryouts are this March. There will only be one tryout for the whole 2012-2013 season. Cheerleading consists of dance, stunts,

tumbling, and, of course, cheers and chants. Poms tryouts are this April. You might have seen the pom- pom girls do a dance routine at a football or basketball game. They even did a routine at Senior Night at the high school. The New Prairie High School Dance Team does different dance routines that include jumps, kicklines, leaps, turns, and pom poms. Each sport travels to compete all over Indiana. Kylee Rhoades, New Prairie Middle School cheerleader, says, “I'm trying out for Poms because I enjoy it more.” Kayla Villeneuve, also New Prairie Middle School Cheerleader, says, “I want to try out for Poms because I love to dance.” Kenzie Williams, former

New Prairie Middle School Cheerleader’s reason is, “I'm trying out for Poms because I love dancing and I was inspired by my sister to dance.” Kelsey Williams, also from New Prairie Middle School says that she wants to do Cheerleading because she likes stunting. Caitlyn Young, New Prairie Middle School cheerleader is recorded saying, “I want to do Poms because I've always loved to dance.'' There are many more girls trying out for each of these sports. Which Team Will He Choose?

Peyton Manning was recently released by the Indianapolis Colts. Manning could be known as one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play. Some say Jim Irsay, Indianapolis Colts owner and CEO, made a terrible choice. The Colts recently had a terrible year and went 2-14. Manning did not play last season and wasn't sure about this season. He has been cleared to play and he plans on playing this year. He wanted loads of money without actually knowing if he was going to play or not, that led to the release. The Colts have the first round, first pick, in the 2012 NFL draft. With that they are most likely going to get Andrew Luck, a prolific quarterback out of Stanford. Some say Luck reminds them of Manning when he played college ball at Tennessee.

Anyways, Thursday March 15, 2012 was the official starting for free agency, and Peyton Manning talked to many teams. It would be hard to say no to the Tennessee Titians because that is where he played college football. Right now the top teams for Manning are the Titians, 49ers, and Broncos. Manning is such a good

quarterback that almost every team wants

him. Hopefully he will pick a team soon so the suspense will end.

MANNING CHOOSES DENVER BRONCOS

March 16, I wrote an article on where Peyton Manning was going to go to. I listed the Denver Broncos as an option, and that is where he went. He was offered a 5 year, 96 Million Dollar deal with Denver on Tuesday, March 21st. Broncos’ quarterback, Tim Tebow was put in a tough position. Denver decided to trade Tebow to the New York Jets, and that is where he is currently.

RG3 Impresses the Washington

Redskins

The defending Heisman trophy winner,

Robert Griffin III (RG3) impresses Redskins

Snyder at Pro-Day at Baylor on March 21.

They were immensely attracted to Griffin’s

speed. You see, the Redskins’ offense

requires a quarterback that cam throw out

of the pocket, and can throw on rollouts.

This kind of thing is what Griffin excels at,

and what he really is known for as a

quarterback.

Despite Griffin’s exceptional performance,

all of his passes thrown were without pass

rush, and were all in a controlled

environment. However, RG3’s accuracy was

said to be outstanding. It is clear that he has

been working incredibly hard during the

offseason so far. His major flaws that he

once had are now his strong suits.

His deep throws were a work of art. This

has always been a signature Robert Griffin

III. This sort of pass, Rex Grossman

(Redskins current QB), couldn’t complete to

save his life. Mike Mayock on NFL Network,

who witnessed RG3’s perfection March 21st,

“His performance confirmed for me the

accuracy and touch on his deep ball.”

Also, Griffin went through last season only

throwing six interceptions which is quite

impressive. RG3 has a sense of coolness

about him as well. He is always relaxed in

the pocket, and doesn’t rush anything. He is

clearly a perfect fit for the Redskins.
